Todd Burnham and Phil McCarthy explore the difference between work-life balance and work-life flow, and why the distinction matters for performance, culture, and avoiding burnout. They break down practical frameworks like “Zelda Hearts,” the “Two Hands” model, and the idea of finding touchpoints between your work and the parts of life that matter most: relationships, health, learning, and purpose. The conversation dives into how lawyers and firm owners can build sustainable careers by aligning work with their best life instead of treating it as a compromise.

In this episode of the Ash Said It Show, we dive deep with Julie Colombino-Billingham, the visionary founder of Deux Mains. What started as a disaster relief mission in Haiti turned into a high-end, solar-powered fashion revolution. Julie isn't just making bags; she's rewriting the rules of luxury and prove that "Made in Haiti" is a global gold standard. The name Deux Mains means "Two Hands" in French. But as Julie explains to Ash, it's about way more than just the physical act of sewing. The Heartbeat: It represents a handshake between the person who made the bag and the person who carries it. The Deeper Meaning: It's a bridge that closes the gap between the consumer and the artisan. When you hold a Deux Mains piece, you aren't just holding leather—you're holding the dignity and the future of a professional maker in Port-au-Prince. Deux Mains doesn't just hire people; it's an artisan-owned business. This isn't your typical factory setup. The Soul of the Product: Julie emphasizes that because the artisans have a stake in the company, the quality is unmatched. The Quality Shift: When you own what you make, you don't cut corners. Every stitch carries the pride of someone building their own legacy, not just working for a paycheck. For those of us used to the "cheap and fast" cycle of fast fashion, Julie wants the first touch of a Deux Mains piece to be a sensory reset. "I want them to feel the weight of intention. Fast fashion feels temporary; this feels permanent. It's the difference between a product and a story." Haitian culture is vibrant, loud, and incredibly resilient. Julie weaves that island spirit into every seasonal collection. The Aesthetic: Think bold colors and textures that reflect the local art and the "never-back-down" attitude of the Haitian people. The Vibe: It's a mix of rugged durability and tropical elegance—designed to handle the real world while looking like a work of art. Julie drops a truth bomb on the podcast about what "sustainability" actually means. The Secret: You can't have an "eco-friendly" product if the people making it are in poverty. The Message: True ethical fashion requires a living wage. If a brand saves the planet but exploits the person, it's not sustainable. Julie urges consumers to look for the "how"—like Deux Mains' 100% solar-powered factory and fair trade certifications. Web: https://deuxmains.com/ Looking for that extra spark to level up your life? Say hello to Ash Brown—your go-to American powerhouse, motivational speaker, and the ultimate hype-woman for your personal and professional growth. Ash isn't just a voice in personal development; she's a trusted friend who brings real-talk wisdom and contagious energy to every conversation. Whether you're stuck in a rut or ready to scale your dreams, Ash is here to fuel your journey with a mix of heart and hustle.
We've been on an extended break, but we're back...and we're watching "Can't Hardly Wait." It's a teen comedy from 1998 that features seemingly almost every young actor of the era: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Seth Green, Clea DuVall, Selma Blair, Melissa Joan Hart, etc., etc., etc. If you know any of these people you have to watch it. Watching it is a little like a visual 90's time capsule. It's awesome. We have two wine pairings on this one. The first is a 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon called I Find Myself Here By Chance because it's goes well with the long title and the moments of fate in the movie. Then we have a 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon from Two Hands called Sexy Beast. There's a lot of hookups in the movie so it only made sense to have it.Metacritic Score: 53/100Movie Sync Notes: We purchase "Can't Hardly Wait" on Amazon Prime. We start "Can't Hardly Wait" 8:39 into the pod, and push play on part two at 57:40 into the pod.

What an inspiring episode today! Zion Clark is an All-American wrestler, MMA fighter, Guinness World Record holder, author, and globally recognized motivational speaker. He is also the subject of an Emmy Award-winning Netflix documentary. Born with Caudal Regression Syndrome, a rare condition that left him without legs, Zion Clark stands just over three feet tall and weighs 110 pounds, yet he competes against able-bodied athletes in both wrestling and MMA. Zion's story has been featured in major media outlets, including Forbes, Men's Health, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, NBC, ABC, Fox, and ESPN. He was also a contestant on America's Got Talent! Born in Columbus, OH, and placed for adoption at birth, Zion faced significant adversity, growing up in the foster care system and enduring constant relocations and hardship. Despite being labeled a "problem child," Zion found solace in wrestling and music, using both as outlets for self-expression and personal growth. Recruited by several colleges, he attended Kent State University, where he wrestled at the varsity level for two years. Zion's journey is a testament to perseverance and resilience. His story is a powerful reminder that while life's challenges are inevitable, success comes from adapting to your circumstances and taking control of your destiny. Zion will be in Cleveland! You can watch him live at Rumble On The Lake on October 5th! Proceeds will help more kids stay off the streets and hit the mats. “I see the fear of failure as being so detrimental to so many people early in their career. In people's minds, failing is often outsized, but most of the time, the things you're dealing with when you're up and coming are expected to involve some failure. That's how you learn,” reflects Eric Emans, the CFO of Nintex. Emans tell us his career was built using the power of learning from mistakes and driving an expectation-based culture in finance. In fact, Emans views failure as a critical learning tool. Starting his career in juvenile rehabilitation, Emans tell us he gained unique insights into human behavior and communication, which later influenced his approach to leadership. When Emans transitioned to finance, he was determined to understand the business holistically, not just through numbers. At Bluecore, where he first stepped into a CFO role, Emans emphasized the importance of building strong relationships within the organization. He relied on mentorship and collaboration to navigate new challenges, openly seeking feedback from colleagues and industry veterans. This approach helped him avoid common pitfalls and develop a nuanced understanding of financial operations. As CFO of Nintex, Emans has continued to foster a culture where team members are encouraged to go beyond their job descriptions. He uses the metaphor of the left hand and right hand to describe the importance of both controllership and FP&A in his leadership. “My head of FP&A and my controller need to be my right and left hand. Not only do they need to be talented, but I need to be able to speak to them about almost everything going on in the company,” he says. Emans believes in empowering his team to think critically, challenge assumptions, and bring new insights to the table. “If a finance person just hands me back the analysis I asked for, that's great. But if they go further and provide additional insights, that's what makes the difference between a good and a great organization,” he says. It perhaps little surprise Emans's leadership style is driven by continuous learning. He advocates for finance professionals to engage with different disciplines, understand the broader business context, and not be afraid to make mistakes.
