This is The Knock On, KCLR, and Scoreline.ie's weekly rugby podcast. In this episode, Stephen Byrne is joined by Tom Crotty from Carlow Rugby Club, James Blanchfield from Kilkenny RFC and Paddy Browne from Tullow RFC. The Kilkenny men's fixtures on Sunday last were called off late due to the stormy weather. The J1 and J2 games against Gorey have been refixed for this Saturday. The Kilkenny women are at home to Ashbourne, it's their first game of the league this season. Bective beat Carlow's J1's at the weekend, Tom Crotty felt they could have won it and that their scores came off Carlow's mistakes. They were disappointed not to get a losing bonus point and the seconds had a better game beating the Dublin side. Tom says the fitness levels required for Division 1A are huge, the ball is faster and they feel like they haven't caught up quick enough. Carlow's ladies' team have their first game in over a decade this weekend against De La Salle Palmerston. Tullow's Dannah O Brien was part of the Irish women's senior team who made history at the weekend beating the Black Ferns. Dannah kicked the score that won the game at the end. Meanwhile, Wicklow beat Tullow's men's teams in the league. Paddy Browne says Wicklow were relentless and Tullow had a hard day against them. Tullow could have some luck on their side for the next game though as Adam Johnson and Stevie Smith could be back for the clash in a week. The women were also beaten in their opening AIL game at home to Wicklow, they picked up three player injuries. The ladies play Cooke near Belfast in the next round.

That's right Summerupperers, ‘tis the season for the Highly Anticipated and Much Sought After awarding of the second annual Wonkies! This year there were several contenders for top honours but your intrepid hosts have sent up the smoke signal and unanimously declared our favourite climate paper of 2023 was…DRUMROLL…Getting off gas: why, how and who should pay? By Tony Wood, Alison Reeve and Esther Suckling of the Grattan Institute!  This paper was covered in Episode 28 of the pod and your hosts noted the timeliness and influence the report has had since its release in June 2023 on the thorny issue of getting 5 million Australian households off fossil gas. Honourable mentions for our runners up go to “Rethinking markets, regulation and governance for the energy transition” by Dr Ron Ben-David (Episode 32), the Climate Change Authority's  “Reduce, remove and store: The role of carbon sequestration in accelerating Australia's decarbonisation” (Episode 33) and Discounting the Distant Future: A Critique of the EPA's Analysis of the Social Cost of Carbon', by Geoffrey M. Welcome to episode 75 of the Eat for Endurance podcast, featuring fellow Sports Dietitian Stevie Smith (MS RD CSSD). Today we're discussing performance nutrition for triathlon, specifically for the 70.3 and 140.6 distances. Stevie is not only an experienced dietitian, but she has also finished ten full ironman distance triathlons and numerous 70.3 races, so I knew she would be a great RD to cover this topic with me. Many of the sports nutrition principles that we discuss for long distance running, cycling, or other endurance sports like triathlon are the same. We aim for a certain number of grams of carbs per hour, we have to replace sweat losses with water and electrolytes, train the gut, eat adequately day to day, and so much more. But we DO need to change our specific nutrition strategies from sport to sport, and this episode addresses the nutrition challenges that are unique to long-course triathlon.   I realize this episode is coming out right as the tri season is wrapping up and with Kona in a couple days, but hopefully you find it useful and have some things to think about for your training next year.  Links & Resources:Stevie's Website: https://stevielynrd.com/Follow on Instagram (@stevielynlyn)Announcements:Have nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Kiernan's lyric recording of multiple losses—of father, fertility, beloved natural places, sheer breathing spaces destroyed by human encroachment—provides the elegant architecture guiding each poem. Seductions and menacing of drink, of violence, shadow the speaker's journey. Guiding all is the gorgeous dreaminess in Kiernan's voice, pouring into us its alchemies: art itself is the elixir that distracts from, or miraculously surpasses, illusion or myth. A witchy and sardonic wit's at work, too, in these poems, singing with Stevie Smith, and with Plath. What a great gift of solace and heart this book is.”—Judith Vollmer, author of The Sound Boat: New and Selected Poems “Elegiac and alive with all five senses, plus whatever sixth sense allows us to perceive the metaphysical mysteries of life and death, Lissa Kiernan's The Whispering Wall limns the mists of grief and memory and delineates the lucidity of having a body.”—Kathleen Rooney, author of Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk and Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey   “...Kiernan deftly weaves her own personal narrative into the lives of other artists (including Remedios Varo, Leonor Fini, and Leonora Carrington), historical events, computer systems, mythological figures, and even aerodynamics concepts, so that the collection subtly expands the dimensions of what the self means... “—Christien Gholson, author of All the Beautiful Dead and winner of The Bitter Oleander Press Library Of Poetry Book Award Yours in Radio, Sharon

In this episode, I sit with Stevie Smith, a registered Dietitian from InsideTracker, to talk about all things bloodwork. I partnered with InsideTracker because I realized not all bloodwork is created equal, and InsideTracker met my high standards as they test optimal ranges for our biomarkers. I like the idea of optimal for myself and my clients. Hey, I've got my long-term health goals of no flares for life, and I want to ensure my biomarkers are on point.I tried out InsideTracker on myself and was so taken by the experience that I signed on immediately to offer it to my wonderful clients! Also, tracking bloodwork for my clients was a great way to show how diet alone can make such a significant impact. I also love that InsideTracker has a great app and gives you food options for bringing up your biomarkers. As you know, I am food forward or food first. I have been off supplements for 10 years, and yep, food has been enough despite the rhetoric that our food is depleted of nutrients. Kinda wild, right? Her father left the family to join the North Sea Patrol when she was very young. At age three she moved with her sister and mother to the northern London suburb Palmers Green. This was her home until her death in 1971. Her mother died when she was a teenager and she and her sister lived with their spinster aunt, an important figure throughout her life, known as "The Lion." After high school she attended North London Collegiate School for Girls. She began as a secretary with the magazine publisher George Newnes and went on to be the private secretary to Sir Nevill Pearson and Sir Frank Newnes. She began writing poetry in her twenties while working at George Newnes. Her first book, Novel on Yellow Paper, was published in 1936 and drew heavily on her own life experience, examining the unrest in England during World War I. Her first collection of verse, A Good Time Was Had By All (1937), also contained rough sketches or doodles, which became characteristic of her work. These drawings have both a feeling of caprice and doom, and the poetry in the collection is stylistically typical of Smith as it conveys serious themes in a nursery rhyme structure. While Smith's volatile attachment to the Church of England is evident in her poetry, death, her "gentle friend," is perhaps her most popular subject. Much of her inspiration came from theology and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. She enjoyed reading Tennyson and Browning and read few contemporary poets in an attempt to keep her voice original and pure. Her style is unique in its combination of seemingly prosaic statements, variety of voices, playful meter, and deep sense of irony. Smith was officially recognized with the Chomondeley Award for Poetry in 1966 and the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1969. Smith died of a brain tumor on March 7, 1971.From https://poets.org/poet/stevie-smith. For more information about Stevie Smith:“Stevie Smith”: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/stevie-smith“The Uneasy Verse of Stevie Smith”: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-uneasy-verse-of-stevie-smithAll the Poems: https://www.ndbooks.com/book/all-the-poems/

The Penelope Fitzgerald who wrote The Bookshop, Offshore and The Blue Flower is far too celebrated – as the greatest novelist of her time, according to Julian Barnes, and many others – to be in need of a revival. But as Hermione Lee, her biographer, writes in the introduction to the LRB's new selection of Fitzgerald's writing for the paper, ‘though she started publishing biography and fiction late in life … she was an old hand as a literary journalist.' It is this Fitzgerald, ‘a reviewer, a writer of introductions, a literary judge, and a speaker on panels and at literary festivals', who is the subject of this special event to mark the publication of the LRB's latest Selections volume.Lee is in conversation with Susannah Clapp, who worked on many of her LRB pieces, and has described her as an ideal contributor who needed no ‘handling': ‘She wrote to length, she wrote to time, she wrote without fuss, she wrote a lot' – on subjects ranging from Alain-Fournier to Adrian Mole, Stevie Smith to Wild Swans – ‘always with a steady brilliance.'Introduced by Sam Kinchin-Smith, the LRB's Head of Special Projects. The Galloping Cat is an entertaining, funny poem about a quirky, martyr cat that gallops about doing good. He encounters an invisible angel on a garden path and a fight ensues. Phebe Phillips discusses and reads the poem, The Galloping Cat by the late British poet, Stevie Smith (1902-1971). This poem is an excerpt from the book, All the Poems by Stevie Smith, edited by Will May. Phebe feels an obligation to keep books with well-developed cat characters, alive and in-focus.
