After a long absence, I finally edited the most recent recording of an Emo Diaries episode -- my apologies, especially to Thomas! I'm joined by fellow therapist Thomas Cho for another Emo Diaries, a segment-based show that gets in its feelings about one great emo song per episode. This week, it's one of the all-time album openers in heavy music: "Young and Aspiring" by Florida Exvangelical poster boys Underoath. ___________________________ Dan is accepting WA state therapy clients and coaching/consulting clients from everywhere: religiononthemind.com Email Dan: prettygoodvibrationspodcast@gmail.com IG: www.instagram.com/prettygoodvibespod/ Artwork: https://www.nickryanluevano.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of All Consuming Podcast, we dig into one of Gary's favorite albums, why New Medicines stood out in the Tooth & Nail and Solid State era, and whether Dead Poetic fits the “Christian band” label or something more like Christians making music. We also get into the bigger conversation around what we consume, how music shapes us, parenting kids through music choices, Warped Tour-era sing/scream bands, comparisons to Underoath, Emery, Saosin, Chiodos, and why Taste the Red Hands is such a killer album opener. Tyler may not be a full Dead Poetic convert yet, but he walks away with a new respect for the album.Songs discussed: “New Medicines,” “Taste the Red Hands,” and “Vanus Empty.”

"We've always had the same kind of values in why we're doing this. That alignment, I think, helps the steadiness and longevity... The music comes first. Music is about itself. It's not, at least primarily a means to make a living."    Dustin Kensrue of Thrice on the shared values that have kept the band's lineup intact for 25 years. He discusses their unique writing process using Asana and 400+ voice memos, and how re-recording a classic album influenced their new sound.    For over two decades, Thrice has been a constant—a pillar of the post-hardcore scene that has not only evolved with each album but has kept its original four members intact. We're joined by frontman Dustin Kensrue to discuss how they've managed one of the most incredible feats in rock music: staying together. Dustin details the band's practical creative process, revealing how they use project management tools like Asana to organize hundreds of voice memos into the powerful songs fans know and love. He also explains how revisiting their classic album *The Artist in the Ambulance* allowed them to reconnect with old instincts in a fresh way, directly influencing their new material. This is a conversation about legacy, integrity, and what it takes to put the music first, always."We've always had the same kind of values in why we're doing this. And that alignment, I think, helps the steadiness and longevity... The music comes first.""I have no idea how we would write a song to work on TikTok... it's just not on our minds. There's enough juice flowing... the hardest thing is narrowing down what ideas we wanna chase because there's so many.""Doing both of those [re-recordings] was a process of kind of reintegrating a lot of old instincts and ways of thinking... those instincts can be reappropriated by us in a fresh way, that feels authentic and organic and not forced." This week on the pod, Chris Dudley of Underoath joins us in going full horror-goblin mode while we descend into full-blown extraterrestrial delirium, tackling The Fourth Kind, Signs, and Fire in the Sky — three films that prove aliens really might exist, but also might have the collective IQ of a Roomba in a bathtub. We kick off with The Fourth Kind (2009) — directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, starring Milla Jovovich, a bunch of owls with boundary issues, and “archival footage” that is approximately as convincing as a Bigfoot found on Etsy. The gang debates whether the aliens were scary or if the real villain was hypnotherapy, and how the film somehow made “ancient Sumerian alien yelling” a plot device. We also discuss the Nome, Alaska lawsuits, the fake websites, and why the studio absolutely deserved to be sued by the state of Alaska for gaslighting an entire population. Then we plunge headfirst into Signs (2002), where M. Night Shyamalan brings us aliens so technologically advanced they can cross galaxies but can't figure out a damn doorknob. We're talking crop circles, Pennsylvania dad vibes, Joaquin Phoenix swinging for the fences (literally), and Mel Gibson crying like it earned him a punch card at the “Prestige Actor Sadness Rewards Program.” Finally, we arrive at the king of UFO trauma: Fire in the Sky (1993), directed by Robert Lieberman, featuring the most infamous alien encounter ever committed to film and Travis Walton, the patron saint of “I swear the aliens did it.” The hosts scream about the abduction sequence like a group therapy session for people who've all watched this movie too young and were never the same. The words “shitty aliens and fucking Travis” are spoken enough times to summon some kind of cosmic lawsuit.Along the way we detour into:• Alien allergies• Crop circles as early-2000s clout chasing• Water-allergic humans (apparently real???)• Whether aliens would choose to invade Pennsylvaniaof all places• How Signs accidentally invented a new method of irrigating corn•How Scary Movie 3 permanently corrupted the DNA of Signs for all of us.• The eternal philosophical question: are owls just shitty aliens in disguise? If you like horror podcasts that sound like three guys locked in a basement joking about being abducted mid-episode, this one is for you.Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaChris: @chrisunderoathJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio:@stranjlove

It is hard to sum up the work of Chad Johnson in a snippet. Chad had an enormous impact on the post-hardcore and emo scene in the early 2000's and therefore the scene even to this day. Band like Underoath, Hopesfall, Further Seems Forever all got their start on either Chad Johnson's Takehold Records or put out songs on splits or compilations under Chad. Chad also did A&R for Tooth and Nail in the early 2000's, helping bands on the label excele. Chad is also the man behind the inception and continuance of Furnace Fest in Birmingham ,Alabama which has created both one of the scenes most iconic festivals and communities. Chad is known by most musicians and people as one of the most positive people you will ever meet, but this year was a year that almost broke Chad. Listen as we talk about Chad's story and his struggle with his own mental health in this episode.

"What makes Her Leather Jacket so emo?"We caught up with Her Leather Jacket at When We Were Young Festival 2025 to talk about their incredible journey, from honing their sound to collaborating with legends of the scene. The band discusses how mentorship from Aaron Gillespie of Underoath completely opened the door for them to be more vulnerable in their lyrics and songwriting. This collaboration was crucial in developing their sound and led to their latest single, "Death Train".The band shares the story behind the track, which features an iconic appearance from Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens. It was actually Aaron Gillespie's idea to bring Kellin onto the song, and they were ecstatic when he loved it and agreed to be a part of it. Hearing the final mix with Kellin's unmistakable voice was an "unbelievable" moment for the band. They also touch on the bands they were most excited to see at the fest, including The Maine and Don Broco, and answer the ultimate question: what's the most emo song they're listening to right now?Key Topics & Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction at When We Were Young Fest 2025[00:21] Bands they're excited to see at the festival[00:42] The most emo songs they're listening to right now[01:25] What makes Her Leather Jacket's music so emo?[01:43] The influence of mentor Aaron Gillespie on their songwriting[02:15] The story behind their single "Death Train" ft. He goes, why don't we get Kellin on it? I said, absolutely.""To have a mentor who really believes in us too and kind of is willing to help guide and shape and kind of reach out to his people... we're just super stoked." JOIN THE CLUB! Welcome to season 8 of the LSQ podcast! I'm thrilled to kick off this season with an interview with Julien Baker & Torres, two artists whose music on their own I've admired for years: Julien, as a solo performer and member of boygenius, and Torres, which is the musical moniker of the singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott. Last year, they revealed that they had been working together on a country project and they shared a beautiful debut single, “Sugar in the Tank” that I fell in love with instantly. Now there's an album coming and it's so good! Send A Prayer My Way, a collection of gorgeous tunes that Julien and Mackenzie collaborated on during the past couple of years, arrives on April 17th via Matador. In the interview, we talk about the inspiration for the project, as well as their respective childhoods, growing up in the South, surrounded by country music and country music culture, and how their relationship with the genre evolved over the years and how it ended up informing the album. We also delve into the other music they loved as kids: Mackenzie talks about her early obsessions with Britney Spears and Broadway musicals like The Phantom of the Opera and eventually writing songs that were country songs with “a little bit of John Mayer”  flavor, and Julien shares how she went from loving Shania Twain to “being radicalized by Green Day” after seeing them on VH1 to discovering the metal bands like Underoath and Norma Jean that inspired her to start playing music herself.
