RDS may be one of the smallest signals your FM station transmits, but getting it right matters more than ever. On Episode 804 of This Week in Radio Tech, broadcast network engineer and podcast host, Tyler Woodward, explains the technical details behind RDS and its U.S. counterpart, RBDS. We discuss the data fields every FM engineer should understand, including PI codes, program type, alternate frequencies, and the way field repetition rates affect what listeners see on their radios. Tyler also explains why accurate PI codes are increasingly important for connected-car services such as RadioDNS and dts AutoStage—and points broadcasters to a useful online tool for verifying the correct PI code for their call letters. If you are responsible for an FM station, this is a must-listen—or must-watch—conversation. Dr. James Beckett: Sports Card Insights

Dr. Beckett discusses how grading backlogs, especially at PSA, hurt the hobby's liquidity and confidence more than pricing, noting long waits, submission shutdowns, and the impact on modern product timing. He reviews the current landscape (BGS improving, SGC positioned for vintage, CGC strong in TCG) and proposes “segmentation” with separate queues, pricing, and training lanes for TCG, modern, and vintage, arguing authenticity/alteration detection is the top priority. Beckett suggests operational fixes such as vouchers for customers willing to accept slower service, incentives for bulk/multiplicity submissions to speed grading, and loyalty points that can provide queue advantages while penalizing bad-faith submissions. He also highlights registries and pop reports as key infrastructure and suggests pre-screeners could offer labeled, non-binding raw grade estimates to avoid long grading limbo.   02:06 Backlogs and Hobby Impact 03:14 Separate Queues by Category 05:04 Training Lanes and Authenticity 08:04 Pricing and Voucher Ideas 09:53 BCCG Story and Bulk Efficiency 13:01 Queue Perks and Loyalty Points 14:31 Eye Appeal and Submitter Notes 15:50 Pre-Graders and Raw Reviews

Use code "SCI" at arenaclub.comDid Panini use Artificial Intelligence to write the backs of their new sports cards? The new Panini Signature Series basketball set features player descriptions that are so poetic and absurd that many collectors are convinced they were generated by AI. However, Panini has officially denied the claims to The Athletic, stating that a team of former sportswriters penned the copy. In this episode of Cards on the Table, we read some of the most ridiculous examples—including wild descriptions for V.J. Edgecombe, Carter Bryant, and Joan Beringer—and debate whether this "AI slop" is a disaster or exactly what the hobby needs to make card backs fun to read again.Plus, we break down Beckett Grading's massive 49% output increase in May and debate if BGS should adjust their grading scale to hand out more Pristine 10s following PSA's recent value tier shutdown. On This Week in Radio Tech episode 802, John Pooley, CSTE, joins us to share his SBE presentation, “Human Centered Generative AI for Broadcasting,” and to take questions about the practical, ethical, and operational implications of using AI in our work. John’s message is clear: use AI well or risk being left behind—but use it carelessly and you can lose money, judgment, data security, and trust. We’ll talk about keeping humans in control, verifying AI-generated work, protecting sensitive station and customer data, and using AI as a coworker for research, troubleshooting, planning, and professional learning. They debate the hobby's increasing “lottery ticket”/gambling feel, the shift of products and pricing toward breakers, and how high wax costs push collectors toward singles while still relying on breaks to supply the market. The group discusses brand and conduct concerns around breakers, and argues unlicensed manufacturers like Panini, Upper Deck, and Leaf can remain viable by right-sizing and leaning on strong inserts. They also cover grading-company event strategy, highlighting PSA's tech and process improvements (app scanning, QR intake, reduced lines) and the importance of human guidance at shows and hobby-shop drop-offs, noting PSA, BGS, and SGC can coexist with distinct strengths.   02:12 Fanatics and PSA Giants 03:36 Eisner vs Rubin Mindset 04:19 Gambling and Break Culture 07:45 Wax Prices and Buying Singles 11:17 Breakers vs Hobby Shops 13:31 Non Licensed Brands Survive 15:02 Grading Shows and Tech 19:48 Coexisting Grading Ecosystem

Chris 'Doc' Tarr joins Kirk Harnack for a fun and practical conversation about “Doc-isms.” These are the short, memorable sayings that Chris has developed over years of troubleshooting transmitters, studio gear, and broadcast workflows under pressure. Each phrase—like “Work the problem,” “Just think in reverse,” and “We’re not going to get any more off the air than we already are!”—comes from real-world engineering situations where clear thinking and good habits make the difference. Whether you’re responding to an off-air emergency or designing systems for long-term reliability, these Doc-isms capture the mindset of experienced broadcast engineers. Tune in for practical wisdom, a few laughs, and lessons learned the hard way. Show Notes:Chris Tarr’s list of “Doc-isms”"We're not going to get any more off the air than we already are!". That's code for slow it down and take your time. "Work the problem!". That means take a break, sit down, and think things through a bit. "Just think in reverse!". My phrase for troubleshooting. The most effective way to troubleshoot is to start at the place the thing isn't working and go backwards. “You know they make those - they’ll even ship them to your door!” Sometimes it’s a better idea to just buy something than to cobble something together to save money. "Failure is not an option!". This isn't as dramatic as it sounds. It's just a reminder that we sometimes don't have the luxury of just walking away when things get tough. It may mean some sort of temporary or hacked together solution until the bigger issue is resolved. "Let's take the victory lap!". Usually said when I leave the site after the problem is fixed and I stop for my iced coffee refill. Michael Dosch of Angry Audio also joins the conversation to unpack the hardware and real-world functionality that makes this new model possible. For over 40 years, radio broadcasters have relied on satellite distribution for network audio—news, sports, talk shows, and even full music formats. But today, C-Band spectrum is being squeezed by cellular services, while Internet delivery has become remarkably reliable—especially when used in aggregate. The result is a fundamental shift in how audio and metadata can be delivered from content creators to radio stations. Adrian and Michael walk through the technical and operational details of this emerging distribution model, explaining how reliability, redundancy, hardware integration, and workflow come together in a practical, broadcaster-ready ecosystem. Aaron shares thoughtful, experience-based insights on how broadcast engineers play a direct role in establishing—and sometimes unintentionally eroding—listener trust, and why that trust remains one of radio’s greatest strengths. The conversation also dives into Aaron’s practical “Tip of the Week,” focusing on securing Barix codecs and other IP audio devices, including why built-in security features and proper password discipline matter. Aaron strongly advocates for using site-to-site VPNs to protect studio-to-transmitter IP links, explaining how this approach improves both security and reliability. Throughout the episode, Aaron emphasizes the importance of remaining open-minded and committed to continuous learning as technology and workflows evolve. Mike and Jesse are back to recap a wild NFL Super Wild Card Weekend before diving headfirst into one of the biggest baseball releases of the year in Bowman Draft. The guys react to the market fallout from the playoffs, discussing Caleb Williams flipping the narrative to clutch leader, why Jordan Love might be a smart buy with Micah Parsons returning, and why Mike argues you couldn't pay him to touch Justin Herbert cards right now after a pathetic showing. They also touch on Sam Darnold's potential upside with a matchup against the 49ers coming up and Drake Maye's debut. Then, Aram Leighton from Just Baseball joins the show to preview 2025 Bowman Draft and explain why the pricing, over $750 for Hobby boxes and nearly $1,000 for the new Breaker's Delight SKU feels totally out of whack for a class considered weaker than last year's. Aram and the guys break down the top chases, including Nationals shortstop Eli Willits, high-upside Pirates pitcher Seth Hernandez, and other top prospects like Kade Anderson and Tyler Bremner. They also dive deep into the sleepers and value picks you need to know, such as Blue Jays infielder Jojo Parker, the Cubs' Ethan Conrad, and why the Tigers' trio of Kevin McGonigal, Jordan Yost, and Michael Olavetto might make Detroit the best break value in the product. Finally, the guys wrap up by discussing the unique Sadaharu Oh retrofractor chase, deciphering the confusing new "Super Jumbo" wax configuration. They then open the mailbag to address questions about grading companies, specifically why TAG and BGS still struggle to overtake PSA's market dominance. They also discuss the impact of LeBron James' new "23rd Season" jersey patch on future card values and whether coaching changes can actually move the hobby needle. Learn more about your ad choices.
