RDS may be one of the smallest signals your FM station transmits, but getting it right matters more than ever. The Game Changers podcast celebrates true pioneers who inspire us to take the big step forward and up in education and beyond. Ross Featherston, BA, Dip Ed, M Ed, was appointed eighth Headmaster of Brighton Grammar in January 2014. Victorian born, Ross was educated in regional Victoria and is a graduate of the University of Melbourne. He joined Brighton Grammar in 2012 as Head of Senior School. From 2006 - 2011 Ross held a wide range of leadership roles in teaching and learning and pastoral care at Geelong Grammar School, including Director of the International Baccalaureate Program, Head of Humanities and Head of History, as well as senior rowing coach and assistant coach of the First XVIII. Prior to this, he held teaching roles at Carey Baptist School and Melbourne Grammar School. Since taking up the position of Headmaster at BGS in 2014, Ross has overseen a new strategic vision for the School. He has been instrumental in prioritising student wellbeing and building the Positive Masculinity framework - making it a central focus of the School's agenda. As part of this work, he co-authored research on positive masculinity which was published in the Health Promotion International Journal in 2021. His dedication to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment has greatly contributed to the success of BGS and also the wider community. Ross was invited to join the International Boys' School Coalition (IBSC) as a Board Trustee in 2020, one of only five Australian Trustees of IBSC which has almost 300 member schools from more than 20 countries and five continents. Ross is currently the Vice Chair, Australasia, IBSC. He was also recognised as one of Australia's most influential educators by The Educator in 2021. Dr Ray Swann, Deputy Headmaster at Brighton Grammar School / Head of the Crowther Centre. Ray completed his PhD in medical education at the Austin Hospital, Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne and his Masters by research at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. He is presently an honorary fellow at the University of Melbourne. Ray has worked across government, independent and single gender contexts, and now leads change in the wellbeing programs and evidence informed practice. He was recognised as a national Top 50 educator in 2019 and received an Australian Council of Educational Leadership New Voice scholarship in 2020. Previously, Ray was a Head of School, and school improvement consultant working for a large organisation. Chris 'Doc' Tarr joins Kirk Harnack for a fun and practical conversation about “Doc-isms.” These are the short, memorable sayings that Chris has developed over years of troubleshooting transmitters, studio gear, and broadcast workflows under pressure. Each phrase—like “Work the problem,” “Just think in reverse,” and “We’re not going to get any more off the air than we already are!”—comes from real-world engineering situations where clear thinking and good habits make the difference. Whether you’re responding to an off-air emergency or designing systems for long-term reliability, these Doc-isms capture the mindset of experienced broadcast engineers. That's code for slow it down and take your time. "Work the problem!". That means take a break, sit down, and think things through a bit. "Just think in reverse!". My phrase for troubleshooting. The most effective way to troubleshoot is to start at the place the thing isn't working and go backwards. “You know they make those - they’ll even ship them to your door!” Sometimes it’s a better idea to just buy something than to cobble something together to save money. "Failure is not an option!". This isn't as dramatic as it sounds. It's just a reminder that we sometimes don't have the luxury of just walking away when things get tough. It may mean some sort of temporary or hacked together solution until the bigger issue is resolved. "Let's take the victory lap!". Usually said when I leave the site after the problem is fixed and I stop for my iced coffee refill. **Building A Life We Don't Want To Escape From**In this episode of The Broke Girl Society Podcast, guest host Terra from the Ambitious Addicts Podcast talks with Annelise, a woman in recovery from gambling harm. Annelise shares how gambling escalated quickly during a period of intense financial stress and major life changes, and how an early win on a gambling app reinforced the belief that she could win again and fix everything. When fear and consequences grew, she took steps to interrupt the cycle, including using bet blocking tools, seeking support, and attending Gamblers Anonymous.The conversation focuses on Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapy model Annelise uses both professionally and in her own recovery. She explains IFS as a way of understanding that we all have different internal parts, including protective parts and parts that hold pain. Annelise describes how addiction can function as a protective response when the system feels overwhelmed, and how healing begins when we approach these parts with curiosity and compassion rather than shame.
