Scott Kenyon brought decades of tech company and board experience when he joined the board of Würk, a Denver-based payroll and human resources software company serving the cannabis industry. But when Kenyon was suddenly thrust into the CEO role a year-and-a-half ago, he had to switch gears from being an interested advisor to the company pilot. Being a tech industry veteran, Kenyon was somewhat in familiar territory, but this was cannabis, unlike any other industry he'd been in. What did Scott do? Recognized that Würk could longer act like a growing company that could outgrow its problems and had to become a company that confronted its problems. Changed processes so the company could go from fighting fires to preventing fires before they happen in the first place. Improved documentation and record keeping. Don't hesitate to let go of employees who don't fit. Who is Scott Kenyon? Since February 2021, Scott Kenyon has been the CEO of Würk, a Denver-based payroll and human resources company focused on the cannabis industry. Kenyon broke into the cannabis industry by joining Würk's board in 2018 and serving as its executive chairman. Before cannabis, Kenyon was a tech industry veteran who spent nearly 14 years in senior managerial positions at Dell, and as COO of Phunware Inc., a mobile device screen company. Kenyon also launched and ran his own sports apparel and footwear business.

The American economy is still shaking off the effects of coronavirus and the recession. If you struggled to keep your accounting clients or were furloughed during the last few months, you never want to worry about losing work again. Never again do you want to be left wondering if you can pay your mortgage or feed your family. You've heard from the experts that the best way to boost your revenue is by finding a niche. And after the ‘Rona' madness, you're looking for a strong niche to carry you through the best and worst of times... even during a recession. Even in the face of a nationwide pandemic, Cannabis has proven to thrive. You could maintain enough work with good clients to keep yourself busy almost all year round (and not just during the rush of tax season), bringing you enough revenue to ride the inevitable waves of the economy. But how do you even begin to learn the ins and outs of Cannabis accounting, or get clients that will justify the transition from general accounting to learning highly-specialized processes for this booming niche? Ken Mierzwinski, CPA, had heard about the Cannabis industry's exponential growth in the last few years. Once DOPE CFO founder Andrew Hunzicker reached out to him about getting started in Cannabis, just around the time COVID-19 first hit, Ken knew jumping into Cannabis was a matter of survival. His well-timed leap into the industry would allow him to keep paying his bills while his other non-Canna clients were on hold. Ken recently sat down with Andrew for an interview for the DOPE CFO podcast to talk about his transition from one business to the other. He tells the story of how he kept his first non-Cannabis business afloat (even while his clients were on hold) because his ONE Cannabis client (that he landed in just two months) helped him pay the bills. He wasn't confident at first that he could quickly get his Cannabis client in time to save his income during the pandemic. However, as soon as he dove into the DOPE CFO materials, he was talking to clients within one week. In this podcast, you'll hear Ken talk about: Why he chose Cannabis as the niche to keep him solvent even during a recession How he got started with the DOPE CFO program and what it was like to be able to quickly reach out to and onboard his first monthly retainer client His plans for the future now that he is getting more comfortable with accounting practices for different Cannabis verticals Want to get on the fast track to learning Cannabis accounting? Cannabis. Pot. Marijuana. Whatever you call it, Canada called it legal on October 17, 2018. More and more, the topic is going to come up; at your place of work, your place of worship, your hangouts and most importantly, your home. Toronto Star has assembled dedicated journalists and outside experts to help walk you and yours through this major cultural shift in our day to day lives. In conjunction with the Toronto Star/TPL series, Star Talks, join Star Editor Irene Gentle and a panel of experts as they start the cannabis conversation and how it will impact your family, your health and your community. This event was recorded on October Monday, September 17 in the Toronto Public Library’s Appel Salon, a part of our ongoing series, On Civil Society. Panelists: Irene Gentle: Editor, Toronto Star Trina Fraser: co-managing partner at Ottawa business law firm Brazeau Seller Law, and head of the firm’s CannaLaw group. Her area of expertise is cannabis law. In addition to acting for licensed producers and (soon-to-be) licensed retailers of cannabis in Canada, Trina advises cannabis industry participants such as clinics, software/application providers, service providers and investors. Dr. Melissa Snider-Adler: chief medical review officer for DriverCheck and a Board-certified addiction medicine physician. She teaches residents at Queen’s University’s Family Medicine department about addiction medicine and also provides expert opinions and assessments of health-care workers who may be struggling with substance use. With the upcoming legalization of cannabis, Melissa has been speaking at conferences and to companies across Canada about the impact of legalization on the workplace. Mitchell Osak: managing director of Business Consulting at Grant Thornton, one of Canada’s largest advisory and accounting firms. He has extensive experience consulting to the cannabis industry including licensed producers, investors and governments. Mitchell is also a cannabis thought leader, speaking and writing extensively on global cannabis industry trends, regulatory issues and consumer behaviour. Click here for a transcript of this episode.
Christian Hageseth, CEO and Chairman of ONE Cannabis Group, has over 8 years of experience in the Colorado legal cannabis industry and more than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur. In 2009, he founded Green Man Cannabis and by 2016 had four retail dispensary locations and two grow operations in Colorado. While operating Green Man, Christian recognized the next step in the evolution of the retail dispensary experience: a cannabis brand that was for every consumer along with a chance for other entrepreneurs to use this brand and his expertise. In 2017, he formed ONE Cannabis as the brand in retail cannabis. Furthermore, he is the Founder & President of American Cannabis Partners, author of Big Weed: An Entrepreneur’s High Stakes Adventures in the Budding Legal Marijuana Industry, and six-time winner of Denver’s High Times Cannabis Cup. [1:01] Josh introduces today’s guest, Christian Hageseth, the founder and CEO of ONE Cannabis. [3:11] Welcome to Franchise Euphoria, Christian Hageseth! [3:36] Christian gives a brief overview of what led him to the franchise cannabis industry. [6:58] ONE Cannabis has sold units in Ohio, Colorado, and Michigan. [7:52] The cannabis industry has actually been around for a while now California having legalized it in 1996 and Colorado in 1999. [9:07] One of the biggest challenges with a cannabis business is getting financial backing through banks and credit unions. [13:36] ONE Cannabis is a fully-vertical marijuana business meaning that they are involved in the process from cultivating the product to retailing it. [16:40] ONE Cannabis didn’t even begin considering the franchise model until they had eight years of experience in the industry and fully ensuring they had mastered their craft. [22:13] Currently, ONE Cannabis is focused on expanding into California. Once they overcome some franchise registration hurtles, they will benefit from having ample amount of cultivation areas for their product. [24:36] For their franchised locations, the ideal structure is having their franchisees be the head of the business operations but with a management team in place beneath them who have relevant industry experience. [27:00] Christian looks forward to adding the real estate component to the business since one of the biggest challenges in the cannabis business is getting the right location.
