Everything sucks, but at least we still have beerThe Brewers Association released their 2024 brewing industry stats recently. As expected, it wasn't great, but it could be worse. There are still passionate people opening breweries and us consumers still have more options for great beer than we ever have before. Praise be.ChatGPT and Beer (and other things)Do you use AI in your job? For Brian and I it's become a daily tool. It's advancing amazingly fast. There are fun beery things you can do with it, too. Get beer recommendations, have it create labels and action figures from your description, or research info on beer and breweries. One caveat - it gets things wrong, a lot, and it states them rather confidently. Question everything it tells you and verify the info. If something doesn't look right then call it out and the AI will take another look to verify its info... but it may tell you something else wrong again. It's hard not to be political these daysY'all, we have been doing this show for going on 10 years and we've always avoided politics. That's becoming difficult to do but we will (in most cases) try to present things as facts and information. But, it's getting crazy out there. The tariffs are hitting the industry already with one smaller local brewery saying the tariffs have already cost them an extra $60,000. Constellation Brands reports that the immigration policies are impacting their sales. I hope our countries can get their acts together, cause it's not looking good.In other news...More brewery closures announced of brands owned my Tilray and Monster, and Miller releases a beer-infused record of dive bar sounds. Few founders exemplify resilience like Mike Fata, co-founder of Manitoba Harvest. Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household, Fata dropped out of school in grade 10, struggled with health issues, and found himself weighing 300 pounds by age 18. A life-changing commitment to health led him to discover hemp as a nutritional powerhouse, sparking his path to founding Manitoba Harvest and building it into one of North America's leading hemp food companies. In his interview on Built to Sell Radio, Mike dives into the journey that saw him go from construction worker to the sale of Manitoba Harvest to Tilray for $419 million.
Tilray Brands (TLRY) CEO Irwin D. Simon says the "market didn't recognize" everything highlighted in its earnings report. One headwind facing Tilray is a lack of national legalization of cannabis in the U.S. Irwin discusses how the company weighs profitability between its cannabis and alcohol businesses. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Bad news keeps coming for craft beerA commenter online noted, "I thought they were the good guys," when discussing a recent round of massive layoffs at Tilray-owned breweries. We did too. Good guys or not, when breweries are owned by a huge corporation most (all?) of the emotional attachment is removed from ownership. Where a family-owned brewery may push through tough times and try to keep people working, for better or worse, a large corporation has no interest in such tomfoolery. Plus, when you merge several breweries you're definitely going to have some duplication of duties in the workforce. And with that said Tilray cleaned house at 10 Barrel, Sweetwater, and Terrapin. No one was safe with Terrapin laying off brewery co-founder Spike Buckowski and President Dustin Watts. The entire Innovation Brewing team at 10 Barrel was let go, and several salespeople across all three breweries. This news always sucks, but this one hit us close to home with many of our friends impacted. In other news... Anderson Valley Brewing is for sale. President and CEO Kevin McGee joined us in March (Beer Guys Radio Ep. 408) and everything seemed great then. His plan was for the brewery to be a multi-generational venture. Looks like those plans have changed. The insane costs of attending an NFL gameAccording to data from bookies.com taking your family of 4 to an NFL game could cost you nearly $2,000 (including beers) if you're going to see the Lions. Their numbers include the cheapest tickets, parking, food, sodas, and beer. If you want a more affordable experience you better be a Jaguars fan. Tilray cemented its place as a top five U.S. craft brewery by volume last week with the acquisition of four brands from Molson Coors' Tenth & Blake division: Atwater, Hop Valley, Revolver and Terrapin. Zoe, Jess and Brewbound weekend newsletter author (and GIF-wielding genius) Sean McNulty break down the deal. The crew also discusses Jess' and Zoe's recent trips to New Trail and Sierra Nevada, respectively, as ABP season gets underway, plus Cambridge Brewing's impending closure and the National Black Brewers Association's most recent equipment donations.

Tilray to buy 4 breweries from MolsonCoors.Big beer news this week (or is it Big Beer news?) with weed warrior Tilray buying 4 breweries from MolsonCoors. Included in that sale is our beloved Terrapin Beer Co. If my math is right this will bring 15 breweries under the Tilray brand, plus some distilleries and cideries. Per Brewbound, the move will make them the #4 largest craft brewery on the Brewers Association's ranking. On the flip side of that coin, Monster Beverage is doing terrible. They posted a nearly 32% sales decline YoY. As we've seen with their huge layoffs and changes at Cigar City, they haven't shown much skill in being brewery owners.Tough news for hop farmers in the Pacific Northwest as they announce a loss of acreage this year due to the declining craft beer market. They took a 12% loss last year as well. The domino effect of craft beer impacts so many more people and businesses than just brewers and breweries. Some fun news for our friends at Athletic Brewing as they announced a partnership with English football club Arsenal to be their official non-alcoholic beer partner, the first for Arsenal. Good for them.In the realm of Bro Science we discuss how ABV impacts hydration and what you can do to mitigate the negative effects. We won't stand by what we say though, Bro.Hope you have a great week and drink some great beers! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! No, Summer is not "almost over!"It always happens around this time of year. Kids start going back to school and all the folks with children think that means Summer is over. They start yapping about it, stores have sales for it. Well, Summer isn't over, and I need you all to shut your mouth with trying to make it over. We got nearly 2 months left and I'm going to enjoy it.As I enjoy my Summer sun, Summer heat, and (of course) Summer beers I'm gonna be smelling good, too. Our buddy Seth come through town from Houston last week and, after showing him some of the Atlanta beer scene, he gave us a mess of Texas beer. I cracked into a Lone Pint Yellow Rose this week, and Brian was sipping some Spindletap 5% Tint and Martin House The Silk Road. Good seeing ya, Seth. Thanks for the beers. In the news this week Brooklyn and Carlsberg collab to do a larger release of a beer brewed with fonio. We've talked about this tough grain on past episodes and it's cool to see what they do with it. Diageo is down overall, but Guinness is killing it. Tilray's craft beer bet is paying off. What started with the acquisition of Sweetwater Brewing has grown to a substantial portfolio of breweries. Most recently purchasing a handful from AB InBev a year ago.Have a great week, enjoy some great beers, and don't forget IT'S STILL SUMMER!Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! During the most recent earnings call of Tilray Brands, the company disclosed not only their financial standings but also posited a vision for future growth. Particularly noteworthy was CEO Irwin Simon's articulation about the company's performance in Germany, the prospects of tapping into the expected growth in the medical market, and Tilray's potential entry into the U.S. territory. "In Germany, Tilray has the leading cannabis market share by revenue for the trailing 12 months, and we believe we are best positioned to capture a large portion of the expected growth in the medical market with both our in-country cultivation facility in Germany and our state-of-the-art facility in Portugal," affirmed Simon. He further accentuated that Tilray has the capability to ship products from Canada to Germany. Eyeing the U.S., Irwin delineated the opportunities that lie ahead for Tilray, particularly in the scenario of federal rescheduling of cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3.High on the earnings call's agenda was the matter concerning excise tax, which has long been a contentious issue within the cannabis industry. A potential tax reduction, as considered during the call, could energize the industry. Such a move, however, could have an impact on Tilray Brands, given that the current high tax rate may be affecting its profitability and competitiveness.Importantly, the earnings call brought to attention the uncertainty prevailing over the distribution of tax savings among licensed producers, provinces, and the retail segment- a concern that Tilray Brands acknowledged to its investors. While predictions on such distributions appear to be reliant on the turn of government policies, the call underscored the need for clarity and strategic advocacy by industry stakeholders to ensure a fair distribution of savings.Within this context, Simon discussed the potential impact of reduced excise taxes. According to him, a cut in excise taxes could potentially offer relief to smaller businesses, helping them stay afloat in the market. Further, he acknowledged that pricing isn't easily predictable, but it wouldn't be surprising if some companies opt to leverage the savings from lower taxes to reduce their prices and sustain competition. However, he was quick to add that this would ultimately rest upon each company's strategy and the dynamics of the market.A key takeaway from the Tilray Brands' earnings call is the realization of how tax policy can significantly impact the financial trajectory of the cannabis industry. The discussions around benefits of tax reduction underscored the crucial role public policies play in bolstering the sustainable growth and endurance of firms within the sector. Moving forward, it's evident that industry players would need to engage more intensely with policymakers to advocate for tax reforms that create a conducive business environment for cannabis entities. However, it is equally important for companies like Tilray Brands to adeptly navigate uncertainties surrounding tax allocation and champion policies that will enhance their financial performance and uncover untapped growth opportunities.TLRY Company info: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/TLRY/profileFor more PSFK research : www.psfk.com This email has been published and shared for the purpose of business research and is not intended as investment advice. It's a consumer's world—we're just living in it. Maybe that's just how it seems nowadays, based on the number of new products on shelves and who's putting them there. In this episode of The Gist, lead Sightlines reporter Kate Bernot and Beth Demmon (that's me) take a look at what products Tilray has released since going on a brewery-buying bonanza last August. We also talk about what sort of vibes Kate saw at the recent Illinois Craft Brewers Convention, and finally, what's the latest buzz on BuzzBallz after Sazerac announced their plans to acquire the one-in-a-million brand success story. All this and more is coming right up, right here on The Gist.
