Minu seekordseks vestluskaaslaseks on president Kersti Kaljulaidi kliimanõunik Timo Palo. Tema nime taga võib kohata selliseid tiitleid nagu polaaruurija, seikleja, rändur või ka geograaf, meteoroloog, teadusfotograaf. Kuigi Timo on elus teinud mitmeid hullusi, siis ehk kõige tuntum ja ekstreemsem oli tema 2012. aastal koos Audun Tholfseniga ettevõetud 1620 km pikkune seiklus põhjapooluselt Teravmägedele. Selle retke eest kanti Timo ka Guinnessi rekordite raamatusse. Mind on alati intrigeerinud inimesed, kes ühel või teisel moel on kombanud inimvõimete ja eelkõige iseenda vaimse vastupidavuse piire. Räägime Timoga, kuidas ta on muuhulgas pidanud silmitsi seisma teda küttivate jääkarudega, kukkunud läbi polaarjää ja sealt napilt eluga pääsenud. Need vast ongi need seigad elus, kus sa päriselt kohtud nii elu kui ka iseendaga. “Kui nüüd päris algusesse tagasi minna, siis see eesmärk oli mul kuskil kuklas sündimas juba poisikesepõlves. Talv, lumi, suusad – see on minu kirg olnud algusest peale. Olen talispordiga tegelenud kogu aeg. Sealt kasvas ka loomulik huvi polaaralade vastu. Need tundusid sellised kauged, kättesaamatud, põnevad kohad; hoopis teistmoodi maailm kui meie siinsed madalamad laiuskraadid. Lisaks aitas seda kirge minus kasvatada ka tolleaegne raamatusari 'Maailm ja mõnda', siis tulid ka esimesed tutvused polaarpäevikutega. See kõik kokku jättis minusse kustumatu mulje, mida võiks siis ühe sõnaga nimetada kireks. Ja kõik, mida ma teinud olen ja millest meil siin edaspidi juttu tuleb, taandubki ühele lihtsale sõnale – kirg. Kui sul seda ei ole, siis ei ole võimalik ka eesmärgi nimel tehtav kannatamine, mugavustsoonist välja minek või mis iganes on selle ettevõetud sihi nimel vaja ära teha. See on kõige alus. Teistpidi võiks lausa öelda, et kõik, mida sa teed ilma kireta, on elu raiskamine, tühja jooksmine. Otsi siis midagi, mis sind päriselt paelub. Vaid sel juhul oled sa võimeline minema väga väga kaugele. Norra filosoofil Arne Næssil on väga hea õnne valem: seal on murd, mille lugejas on kirg tõstetud ruutu ja nimetajasse on pandud füüsiliste ja vaimsete kannatuste summa. See tähendab seda, et kui kirg on ruudus, siis see on otsustav ja määrav tegur. Isegi väike kogus kirge on võimeline toime tulema suurte kannatustega. Aga kui sul isegi seda väikest kogust kirge ei ole, siis sõltumata sellest, kui vähesed need kannatused ka ei ole, sa tegelikult ei leia seda õnne, mida sa otsid.
