The city of Rome is a legacy locale in countless areas of history and culture. For teenage refugee André Aciman, Rome was also a source of life-changing challenges, charms, and connections that would have a place in his heart for years to come. In his upcoming book Roman Year: A Memoir, Aciman recounts the ways his family adapted to the harsh realities of their transition and how he himself fell in love with the poetry and potential of a new home. Roman Year transports readers back to a tumultuous chapter of Aciman's youth as his Jewish family fled an era of growing political tension and waves of expulsions occurring in 1950's Egypt. Leaving their notions of stability, economic status, and community behind in Alexandria, Aciman ushered his younger brother and their deaf mother into the unfamiliar expanses of Rome. Navigating newfound poverty, acting as interpreter through language barriers, and functioning as liaison amidst family conflicts led young Aciman towards escapism as he buried himself in books. It is here, bolstered by so many words and stories, that he regained his footing and began to truly explore his new city and himself. Roman Year takes the form of a vivid multi-sensory snapshot, going beyond simple time and place in immersing readers in the author's vantage point. Aciman revisits memories ranging from richly depicted sights, smells, and tastes to poignant personal reflections to uncompromising critical observations. This passionate retelling captures the formative elements of Roman life that shaped the perspective Aciman would carry with him into future chapters and well past those city limits. Roman Year unwaveringly explores a complicated coming of age story and the concept of home in a lush, layered landscape. André Aciman is a professor, essayist, and author. He is currently a distinguished professor of comparative literature at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His previous publications include the novels Call Me By Your Name, Harvard Square, and Eight White Nights, the memoir Out Of Egypt, and the essay collection False Papers: Essays on Exile and Memory. Herod wants him dead, so Joseph and Mary must flee with Jesus to Egypt. After his birth and subsequent dedication at the temple in Jerusalem, the first story we hear of Jesus' early life is one of an outsider. God is working a wonderful plan that will lead Jesus back into Israel and into the town of Nazareth. God is still preserving people who are outside the "system," preparing them in places like "Egypt" and "Nazareth." Can anything good come out of a place like Nazareth? That's what one of Jesus' own disciples said later when he found out where Jesus was from. God is using places like Nazareth to welcome His plan and purpose.

Moses Part 1 Out Of Egypt - 10th Plague And Passover - Brian Ingraham by Re:Hope Glasgow
God is once again calling His Church to remember. Remember who we were created to worship. Remember where we were when He came for us. When we again find ourselves pinned down by impossible circumstances and hear the echoes of accusation pursuing us, we must remember that it is He who is fighting for us, leading us and bringing us into a land flowing with milk and honey. In this hour, it's time for us follow the fire by night and cloud of His presence by day.On Palm Sunday, Pastor Lee kicks off our Out Of Egypt series with a powerful word on how God is always there to deliver us out of darkness. Focus Scripture // Exodus 3:1-10 (ESV)“Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.7 Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt”Sermon HighlightsYou never waste an opportunity.God is in the midst of retooling, renewing, and reviving the church. He is the God who performs miracles. He stepped IN to our Egypt so He could lead us OUT of our Egypt. We're all slaves to sin without Jesus, our deliverer. When the voice of Pharaoh says “it's never getting better,” Jesus steps in and tears down the lie and sets us free.God is bringing us out of darkness into light. In this hour, God is dismantling the idols of our culture.God doesn't want happy slaves - He wants joyful sons.God is awakening His people in this hour.Delay is not denial.

Israel has taken the lavish blessings of their God and given those gifts to the calf idols of Baal, turning away from the covenant love of the God who redeemed them and turning to love other gods. Therefore, the Lord will discipline his people for their rebellion. Through Hosea, God remarks that he raised Israel like a father raises children, lamenting the calamity that will come upon them, promising that He will not release His full wrath upon them. The book of Hosea ends with a call to repentance. If God’s people will turn back to Him, they will flourish once again. ::: Christian Standard Bible translation. Have you ever been the scapegoat for someone else's failure? Have you ever wanted someone else to carry the responsibility for your failure? Your sin? As we look at the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16, we see how Jesus has not only made atonement for our sinfulness, but how He even completely separates us from that sin and qualifies us to come before God!
Do you desire God's presence in your life? Could it be that God also desires to be with you? With us? When God instructed Moses to build a dwelling place for Him among His people, the directions were specific, pointing over and over again to Jesus, our access to the very presence of God.
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Dr. Kara Cooper. Dr. Cooper is a professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture at UCLA. She’s worked with National Geographic and the Discovery channel. And produced and appeared in a series you may have seen entitled Out Of Egypt which I believe is still available on Amazon and Netflix. Although she has published prolifically, we may know her best from her first general public book The Woman Who Would Be King: Hat Shep Sut’s Rise To Power. That was released in 2014. Her latest work is When Women Ruled The World, which is an strikingly accessible journey along the timeline of ancient Egypt, where we find, surprisingly, periods of time in which women ruled the old world. For a number of different reasons. Along the journey, Dr. Cooney highlights the comparison between the way women were treated in Egyptian history versus the manner in which they find the same treatment in modern society.
