Beth Rodden is one of the best female rock climbers of all-time, and a globally recognized ambassador for the outdoor community. She has achieved a number of notable free climbs on El Capitan, the 3,000-foot monolith in Yosemite National Park, and has also established the hardest first ascent on a crack climb ever done by a woman. In 2000, Beth made international news when she and three male companions were taken hostage while climbing in Kyrgyzstan. In this episode, Beth discusses: Her pathway into the sport and how she became a sponsored climber; How she manages and navigates fear; The lack of female representation in the sport, along with the pay inequity women face; Advice for how to negotiate for pay equity; Her harrowing experience being kidnapped; Her healing process after being released and how she held onto hope in the face of uncertainty; The fears she faced ahead of motherhood, how she navigated them, and the beauty that followed once she became a mother. “Vince is always pulling splinters from his fingers, driven in when he claws at the wooden baseboard, behind the keys,” wrote Bay Area music critic Ralph Gleason, as quoted in Davis author Derrick Bang's newly revised book Vince Guaraldi at the Piano. Splinters? They came from Guaraldi's intense playing, Bang says, nearly nonstop performing, and the worn quality of the pianos he played in clubs. Guaraldi, the Bay Area jazz musician known most for his Peanuts soundtracks and the song “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” died in 1976 but is arguably more popular than ever, Bang says. Two recent signs: This month's latest archival release of music from a Peanuts special, It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown, and Bang's updated book, which he will talk about 6:30 p.m. July 11 at the Avid Reader in Davis. On today's Davisville we learn more about the music, new stories Bang heard while updating his book, and the baffling review Guaraldi received from the California Aggie the last time he played in Davis.

In this episode, Lisa and Marni discuss:How to approach your teen's final college enrollment decision from campus visits to financial considerations.Key questions your student should ask themself when they're stuck deciding between their final school choices. Approaching how to navigate and leverage unexpected financial aid opportunities.Alternative options to the standard college or university path that may be a better fit for your teen.Navigating the complexities of choosing the right college along with your student's best-fit major. Key Takeaways: In a typical year, students need to make a college decision by May 1. In 2024, some schools are pushing that date back to June 1 due to the FAFSA delays. It is fine to apply to a school that your student has not visited, but they do not want to enroll in and attend a school that they haven't seen for themselves. The best way to do so is the admitted student days in the spring. Only 8 of the 50 state flagship universities don't admit students directly to their major. There are benefits to attending a “foundation school” that offers generous merit aid. Opportunities come at the top of the class: students, your professors will know you, and they're more likely to recommend you for research, internships, and jobs. Schools cannot take away their “yes” admission decision, so ask for what your student needs. Worst case, the school says no. “Always ask and always do the research because the ultimate goal is to get a job. While college is fun, and it's a growth experience and a learning experience, it is about being able to come out an adult and you need to know that you've got about a degree that has value to you.” – Marni LevineAbout Marni Levine: As an independent educational consultant, I have helped hundreds of families over the last 15 years by guiding them along the college admissions journey. Most importantly, using the skills I learned as an Advertising/Public Relations major at Boston University and my love of storytelling, I've created a comprehensive program to help high school students develop a unique picture of who they are so that they can find and be admitted to the perfect fit college where they will shine! Jake Berman, who lived in Davis when he was younger, has developed a writer's interest in something Davis has never had — subways. So he wrote The Lost Subways of North America — a Cartographic Guide to the Past, Present, and What Might Have Been, a new book about transit and how it reflects a city's personality, interests, and other attributes. He writes this about the Bay Area, for example -- that after the Freeway Revolt a half century ago, in which San Francisco turned away seven of 10 freeways planned for the city, “the Bay Area adopted a posture that any changes to the urban fabric were presumptively bad, and that exhaustive study of any such changes would be necessary.” We're living with the aftermath of the attitude, which he believes is also present in Davis and other California communities. Jake, now an attorney in New York City, will speak about his book Nov. 29 at the Avid Reader bookstore in downtown Davis, and joins us today on Davisville. (He also created the transit illustrations in the book -- this image is an excerpt from his map of San Francisco's cable cars in 1892.)
‘When I was a lawyer, I knew what was good enough, because if you did the job properly, you were paid, and if you didn't do the job properly, you were sued. It was very clear-cut. With writing, you never know. There's a lot of subjectivity.' James speaks with Penguin Literary Prize winning author Annette Higgs about her debut novel, On a Bright Hillside in Paradise. They discuss the process of researching family ancestry to craft historical fiction, as well as the challenge of taking up writing later in life. Plus, Annette shares the story of how she learned she won the Penguin Literary Prize during a trip to Norfolk Island. Annette Higgs is a writer living in Sydney, Australia. She has lived, worked and studied in Sydney, London and Italy, and holds a Doctor of Arts from the University of Sydney. A Pushcart nominee, her short work has appeared in literary journals and anthologies in Australia, the USA, the UK and India. On an Upper Byrdcliffe Road walk in Woodstock this past summer, I noted to my friends, Perry Beekman and David Gordon, the recent death of Robert Gottlieb, the most acclaimed book editor of the last 50+ years. I've previously mentioned on the podcast, Gottlieb's really great memoir, Avid Reader. David noted that writer Cormac McCarthy had also then recently died. David expressed enthusiasm for McCarthy's great works over the years. I had read McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece, The Road, many years prior and I still get a chill in my bones when I think about it. I asked David whether he would like to come on the podcast to commemorate Cormac McCarthy and to talk about The Road, and the rest of McCarthys great works. And here we are. Published in 2006, The Road is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic and frightening warning, but it's also a story of the love between a father and a son and of the lengths to which a father might travel for his son, literally and figuratively. It's emotional, chilling and also beautifully written.

Diane wanted to share a special conversation from the archives, an interview with legendary book editor Robert Gottlieb, who died in June at age 92. Gottlieb worked with many of the best-known writers of the 20th century. On the list of names whose work he made shine was Diane Rehm. Diane remembers him as a masterful editor who was so kind to her – someone with name recognition in the world of public radio, but no track record as a writer. Gottlieb became one of Diane's closest friends and confidantes. She says, “he was a genius,” and she was so lucky to have him by her side. Robert Gottlieb joined Diane several times as a guest on the Diane Rehm Show over the years. This is their conversation from September 2016 in which he discussed his memoir, “Avid Reader.”

A well-written story can change your life. Seriously. The clever and profound narratives and captivating plotlines can become etched in your mind permanently as if tattooed there. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. That sometimes unsettling scenes or commentary in books (or even TV shows or movies) can stick with you when you'd wish they'd exit your mind stage left. Today I'm doing a solo teaching episode to help you “flip the script” and regain your power when it comes to the thoughts swirling in your mind, possibly influenced by media, books, comments made by others, or perhaps even your Enneagram type. My GP took off on me last year. Landed some big gig in Geneva I think. He's a bright one. Not that I knew him very well. Only met him twice in six years. Anyhow, I went in for my tri-annual (once every three) check-up the other day. The nurse was pleasant. Told me he'd been working in the same clinic for 30 years. Adventurous, I thought. Then a student comes in. Also pleasant. Bit bland, but hey, I thought, it takes years to spice up character. Finally the resident/doctor arrives. Must've been in her mid-thirties. She was absolutely delightful. Smiling, smart, funny. What a difference she made. She lit up the room. Same can be said of Lizzie Gottlieb when she appeared on the screen. My screen that is, on Zoom. It was a delight to talk with her about Turn Every Page her new documentary (released December 30th, 2022 by Sony Classics). It features the 50-year relationship between writer Bob Caro, 87, and his editor Bob Gottlieb, 91. Turn Every Page has a delightful (yes, I know, I'm using it too much, but I figure if Caro can overuse a mot juste - "loom" in his case, according to Bob G. - so can I) soundtrack. It deftly conducts the viewer, and the two Bobs, through the film towards the pressing goal of completing Caro's biography of Lyndon B. Johnson. We see the two at work on the fifth and final volume of the book and in the process, learn about what they're both after: uncompromised (uncompromising?) excellence. The two are by nature industrious, and both have egos. Combine all of the above and you have the makings of both a classic book, and a very watchable documentary, one that gives you a feel for the magic in this unique relationship and a sense of the great joy that can be experienced between writer and editor as they make a book together. What you get with this film is a whimsical, entertaining glimpse at a very special kind of quiet alchemy. I had such fun with this project: watching the film, twice, re-reading parts of Bob Gottlieb's memoir Avid Reader, conducting the interview, editing it, and then right afterwards, going out for a walk and listening to it. I hope your experience with the listening part is as "delightful" as mine was.
My book I, Millennial: One Snowflake's Screed Against Boomers, Billionaires & Everything Else is out in the world! Gosh. We launched it in Melbourne with a lovely event at the Easey Street Concert Hall in Collingwood, featuring me in conversation with my mate Osman Faruqi. Oz and I discussed the guts of the book and why I wrote it, and I read some bits out and took questions and we all had a great time. I hope you enjoy listening back to our conversation. If you're in Sydney, you can come along to the launch at Better Read Than Dead tonight where I'll be chatting to Jan Fran; or if you're in Brisbane, come along to Avid Reader on Tuesday night to hear me chatting with my Serious Danger comrade, Emerald Moon. Welcome to The Academic Life! In this episode you'll hear about: Why we need to write about difficult topics. Four American towns trying to save themselves. The structural processes behind poverty. A discussion of the book The Fight to Save the Town. Today's book is: The Fight to Save the Town: Reimagining Discarded America (Avid Reader, 2022), by Michele Wilde Anderson, which examines how decades of cuts to local government amidst rising concentrations of poverty have wreaked havoc on communities left behind by the modern economy. These discarded places include big cities, small cities, rural areas, and historic suburbs. Some are diverse communities, while others are nearly all white, all Latino, or all Black. All are routinely trashed by the media for their poverty and their politics, ignoring how our smallest governments shape people's safety, comfort, and life chances. For decades, these governments haven't just reflected inequality—they have helped drive it. But Anderson argues that a new generation of local leaders are figuring out how to turn poverty traps back into gateway cities. Our guest is: Michelle Wilde Anderson, a professor of property, local government, and environmental justice at Stanford Law School. Her writing has appeared in the Stanford Law Journal, Yale Law Journal, California Law Review, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, among other publications. Prior to joining Stanford, she worked as a visiting professor, assistant professor, a research fellow, and an environmental law fellow. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Housing Law Project and a board member at the East Bay Community Law Center in Oakland. She holds a joint appointment with Stanford's new Doerr School of Sustainability, and lives with her family in San Francisco.
