(BEGIN EPISODE TRANSCRIPT) skateboarding cats and speeding wheelbarrows. What a weird week! Hi friends, I'm Scott and this is What a Weird Week, a show about the weird stuff from this week's news. If you want a transcript or stuff to subscribe to our podcast, all the links that we talk about, you can get everything at shownotes.page. Shownotes.page. This is season five, episode 24, first published Friday, June 14th, 2024. ❿ I'm calling this one Fast Times in Barrowville. When they make the movie. Dylan Phillips, a British mechanic, broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest wheelbarrow. Record speed was over 52 miles per hour. He built the wheelbarrow just for fun at first and then found out there was actually a world record. If he could make his wheelbarrow go really fast, he set the record in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Apparently, one of the worst forms of transportation is a fast wheelbarrow because according to Dylan, no suspension. It's a rough ride. and also a little bit terrifying. But imagine how fast you could get all your yard work done if your wheelbarrow went 50 miles per hour. So far not available commercially. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce9961lg6l1o ❾ elephant names are in the news. Researchers think that elephants in the wild have names and call each other by their names. Not a lot of animals do that. How do they know elephants are actually doing it? Short answer is they're experts. That would be me paraphrasing the short answer on that one. Longer answer is they studied hundreds of sounds made by mom elephants and their elephant children over the decades. And it seems as though mom was using a certain sound to talk to each elephant kid. That's me paraphrasing a scientific article. It also seems like those elephant children recognize their unique sound or name because they could record some of these sounds and the kid would be like, what? Who said my name when they played the sound back? Again, that's me paraphrasing. That wasn't an actual... In case you thought I was playing the actual audio from the field. No, that was it was me saying who's calling my name. It was me portraying the elephant, you guys. All right, we're off to a hot start. https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/06/12/call-me-by-my-name-elephants-low-rumbles-could-be-unique-to-one-another-research-reveals Up next is a dinosaur discovery. A big old hailstone, maybe a record breaking hailstone. It's a biggie. This is What a Weird Week, a show about the weird stuff from the news. ❽ A driver... No, he wasn't driving. He was diving. Sorry. We'll keep that in. Let's just- We're on a deadline here, you guys. A diver discovered a rare mastodon tusk off the coast of Florida. The diver's name is Alex. First, he thought it was wood, just a big old chunk of wood. But upon closer inspection, a much rarer find than a chunk of wood. A mastodon tusk measuring four feet long, 70 pounds. Now Alex is a fossil hunter. He goes diving and looking for fossils. He's found some before, but this is rare and big and becomes now this tusk becomes the property of the state of Florida. I believe we'll go to the Florida Museum of Natural History is where this tusk will end up. Well done, Alex, rare find and so much better than a chunk of wood. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/mastodon-tusk-fossil-hunting-diver-florida-b2561733.html ❼ A giant hailstone is in the news. This is in Texas. A couple of storm chasers, Val and Amy, were chasing a storm and they found a hailstone nearly 18 cm in diameter. That's about 7 inches. That's well, they describe it as the size of a pineapple. Hailstone the size of a pineapple. Imagine if you're caught in a storm and it is hailing pineapples down on you. A couple of things. The article doesn't mention if it tasted like pineapple, which... Electric spoons and mysterious goldfish. What a weird week Hi friends, I'm Scott and this is what a weird week It's a weekly catch up on all the weird stuff that happened in the news. I think that's it that summed it up. Let's go This is season five episode, can't remember, first released on June 7th, 2024. ❿ Our number 10 story this week was on a lot of newscasts about the fisher, the magnet fisher, the person who you go to a bridge, right? Magnet fishing, you have this powerful magnet on a rope or some sort of leash, maybe, and you throw that magnet in the water. And what comes up a lot of times is junk. In this case, it was a safe with waterlogged $100 bills, totaling an estimated $100,000. So this fellow, this James fellow, reports it to the authorities. There is some sort of finders keepers situation. So James gets to keep the approximately $100,000. The plan now is take it to Washington, see how much is salvageable and leave Washington with a whole bunch of money that you found with a magnet. This all happened in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, New York. Do you think there'd be more money in that body of water, that particular body of water? Is it teeming with mysterious money? Is it gonna be a tourist destination now for magnet fishers? These are questions that remain to be answered. ❾ Nine. Electric spoon enhances saltiness on sale in Japan. So it's a battery operated spoon that somehow makes food taste saltier. The theory behind it, like why we should all have one is we will consume less salt. It is only simulated saltiness. So we'll eat less salt, but we'll still have that salty flavor that many of us crave. And for some of us, it's too much salt and it's not good for us. So electric salt spoons is the way to go. It's gonna save us all, you guys. I'll put a link if you wanna learn how it works, how it interacts with sodium ions on our tongue. So you can kind of do a deep dive on that if you want to. Or maybe, like me, you're just like, don't care about the science, take my money, please. Up next, we have a story of an alleged Pringles thief who may end up with a lifetime supply of Pringles and a mysterious goldfish discovered. Those stories are next. This is What a Weird Week where we catch you up on the weird news of the week. ❽ Friends, I am Scott and this show is What a Weird Week. We catch you up on the weird news of the week. Thank you for listening. 8. Pringles in the news this past week. A fellow stole a lot of containers of Pringles. This is Nottinghamshire in the United Kingdom. Stole some Pringles, admitted guilt, got sentenced, and then Sky News, we got the headline, the thief told police, once you pop you can't stop. That wasn't an official defense, I don't think. Perhaps it was presented in court, your honor. Once you pop, you can't stop. But that did not convince the authorities. And so this fellow, Adam, now sentenced. I don't want to make light of any of this. I hope Adam gets on the straight and narrow, pays his debt to society. But then also I hope after upon release, I hope Pringles comes a-knockin' with some, you know, an idea for an ad campaign. If you go to our podcast page and you get the podcast through Spotify, there's the survey. If you were going to go to jail for a snack food, what would your snack food be? You can find all our podcast stuff if you go show notes that page show notes dot page. ❼ Seven mysterious goldfish. This one is a bit of a doozy, you guys. A doctor has gone viral on social media after discovering a goldfish on their lawn. I would say lawn. This is Newcastle, United Kingdom. So I think you would say garden, perhaps in the United Kingdom. Let me know if I got that wrong. So Dr. Ben Beska has no idea where this goldfish came from, found on the grass, (CHARACTER LIMIT) For Full Episode Shownotes see https://www.scottyandtony.com/2024/06/what-weird-week-catching-you-up-on-this.html or see www.Shownotes.page --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/weirdweek/message
Hurricane season is upon us, and most people are looking to the county and its emergency chief for guidance. But did you know there's grassroots disaster-response organizing going on? Ramon Lopez took part in a drill in his own neighborhood. Then: Developer Pat Neal's 3H Ranch is one the biggest proposed developments in Sarasota County's rural east. He wants to squeeze 6,500 homes into a what's called a "village" concept, and that forces him to ask the county for a rezone and multiple variances. This, in turn, prompted a rant by one elected official. Next: Some call them the condo nazis. We're talking about homeowners associations that not only tell people what they can and cannot do in their homes, but they also play a key role in maintaining, streets, walls, roofs, and other shared assets. Now, the governor signed a law that tries to rein in some common abuses. Ramon Lopez reports. Finally: Primary elections are coming up on Aug. 20 and a general election Nov. 5. But who is doing the heavy lifting on election day? The county's Supervisor of Elections office depends on temporary paid poll workers to make it happen. We talked to Sarasota elections chief Ron Turner, and he says that's an opportunity for high school and college students.
