On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel speaks with Northwest railroad historian and author Martin Hansen about the fire on Monday, August 25, 2025 that appears to have completely destroyed a large and historic wooden structure belonging to the Columbia & Cowlitz Railway in Longview, Washington. There were no injuries reported. The nearly century-old structure housed a machine shop and other maintenance facilities for the railway, which was founded by Weyerhaeuser in 1925. Columbia & Cowlitz Railway is currently owned by Patriot Rail. CASCADE OF HISTORY reached out to Patriot Rail for comment, and received this written statement: "On Monday, August 25, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a fire broke out at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company building in Longview, WA. The building housed Patriot Rail's Columbia & Cowlitz Railway warehouse and locomotive shop. The Longview Fire Department and Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue responded promptly to the scene. No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation at this time." CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via www.space101fm.org. The radio station broadcasts from studios at historic Magnuson Park – located in the former Master-at-Arms' quarters in the old Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. Welcome back to the program. Let's go to the WORD talk line. We'll talk to Gerald in Cowpens. How are you doing, Gerald? Alright, my brother. Hope glad that you're back, my man. I'm glad to be back. What's up? Hey. Are the oysters in season in Rhode Island? You know, because down here They are. Down here because down here, it's always the month with an r in it. Yeah. Yeah. I'd say it's a little different up there, but they are in season, and they are fantastic. Sheila and I went out, Saturday night and had three dozen oysters between the two of us. Unbelievable. But we, you know, have gotten back and forgotten how to do everything around here. Let's go with this. I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States Of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Oh, beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the America is back. Yes, sir. Alright. Let's go back to the WRID chalk line. We'll talk to Paul in Hodges. Paul, what's going on with you, man? Hey, man. I'm just trying to, tell tell everybody that on. I think president Trump's doing a great job. Yeah. He is doing absolutely fantastic job. I mean, look at that. Look at that. Look at everything that he's done in just a little over seven months now. It's been amazing. Yes. I mean, that that thing we did have in there didn't do nothing. You are exactly and I'm talking literally nothing but try to destroy this country. You're right about that, Paul. President Trump doing a great job. And now we've got even more good news. A New York state appeals court and this isn't the end of this, by the way. I just wanna let you know. A New York state appeals court on Thursday tossed out a massive monetary fine for civil business fraud imposed on president Donald Trump, his company, and other defendants related to the lawsuit by state attorney general Leticia James. Now let's go and remember what Leticia James said. And that is why I will be honored when I walk into that courtroom on October 2. Well, my role is civil, but I will come back before you soon with a check for $250,000,000. Yeah. The best we can do is zero. Sorry. Sorry, Leticia. No four what? I it got over 500 half a billion dollars in fines between her and and George George, George Ingeron. They overstated everything. Now remember, this was a, quote, unquote, crime that nobody said happened. There was no lending institution, no organization that accused Donald Trump of committing fraud. In fact, on every single transaction, there was always a disclaimer that these estimates are done and I'm paraphrasing here. These estimates are done using customary, accounting standards, basically saying, listen. This is the way we do things. If you don't agree with it, you do your own due diligence. But nobody did. Nobody wanted to because they were doing business with Donald Trump, and they wanted to do business with Donald Trump. So they did, and they were happy to do it and would do it again. But Leticia James, who, by the way, is under investigation her own self, she decided that Donald Trump, with no complaints whatsoever, committed some sort of fraud. Now she actually did what she accused Donald Trump of doing. She said she bought a four bedroom rental unit when actually was a five bedroom rental unit. Why would she do that? Well, got a better loan on that one. Got better insurance rates on that one. That is mortgage and insurance fraud. Said she lived at a residence that she didn't live at. Then on one document, it appears that she put her father down as her husband in order to get a VA loan. You see, VA loans are only available to military members and their spouses. Leticia James is not a member of the military. Her husband, not a member of the military. Her father, however, member of the military. So from what I'm hearing, she said that her father was well, that's fraud as well. They're alwa ...

And welcome back to the program. Let's go to Jeff in Townsville to talk about Leticia James. Jeff, what's on your mind? Well, it's a fantastic win on these court cases that Trump's getting. Yeah. But I wanna know who's paying for these court cases because you know that ain't free. No. No. That's that's the people of the district. And they they thought Trump was gonna cover some of that with the 500, million dollar settlement, but that's not the case either. So the people of the state of New York, thank you so much for your donation. Right? Exactly. So I I I don't get it. I really don't, Jeff. I appreciate it. Well, here's the thing, though. The Democrats don't get it. Now listen. Don't tell them don't tell them that they don't get it. I mean, how many times what has been the great Democrat talking point for 2025? What's it been? How have they resonated with the American people? Look at all of the people that they're they're defending. They're defending Gilmore Abrego Garcia. They're defending the truck driver who killed three people. They're defending criminals. They don't want the streets of Washington DC cleaned up. And there's a reason for that. Because if those people in Washington DC, like they're seeing now, get a little bit of a taste of what safety and security is all about, they're gonna want more. They're gonna want more. Not only they're gonna want it in Washington DC, they're gonna want it in Baltimore. They're gonna want it in Chicago. They're gonna be they're gonna want it everywhere. They're gonna want it in Atlanta. And that means the Democrats are gonna lose control, and that's the last thing they want. All they want is the power. But they don't know they cannot come out and say that. They cannot say what they really believe. They're only using Gilmore, Abrego, Garcia as a photo op. That's it. They don't care where he goes. They could give a rat's rump. They don't care. They don't care about the so called migrants. They don't care about the African American community. They don't care. The only thing they care about and listen. I was in the land of old white liberals this past weekend. I mean, I might have been in the epicenter. I am literally hold on. I am literally trying to to just rack my brain and think if I saw any, you no. I don't think I saw a single black person. Not one African American. And we're talking about this a this a pretty big tourist town, but, I didn't see anybody there in the land of Black Lives Matter. Where were they? Where were they? Oh, oh, oh, oh, I saw some Hispanics there. They were trimming the manicured hedges in Westerly and Stoningtonborough, but that's it. That's it. So the Democrats, they don't have a brand right now. They don't. And the American people are starting to figure that out. Even I I love this. This is Harry Enton, from, over on on CNN. Once you listen to what he said Look. The Democratic brand right now has about the appeal with the American voter as the Cracker Barrel rebrand has with the American consumers. Bad. Bad. Bad. What are you doing? Oh my goodness gracious. What are we talking about here in terms of big party registration changes in the key swing states? Let's look at the key four swing states that in fact do keep track of registration by party. Look, the Republican party is in their best position at this point in the cycle since at least 2005 and all four of these key battleground states. We go out to the Southwest, Arizona. How about Nevada? Republicans haven't done this well since 02/2005. Oh my goodness gracious at this at this point in the cycle. North Carolina, I couldn't find a point at which Republicans were doing better at this point in the cycle. It's at least this century. It probably goes way back in the last century. And Pennsylvania, very similar. Republicans doing better at this point than at any point at any point this century, at least as far as I I could find. Look. The And, yeah, and and the only thing is the only ...

And welcome to the program on your Monday afternoon. And, boy, I tell you what, it is good to be back in a red state. I was I was up in in the blue state capital of the world. Two of them. We were up there in, Rhode Island and Connecticut over the weekend. And, man but did you know what? The only and I mean this. The only political banners, signs, or flags that we saw while we were in Rhode Island and Connecticut, were Trump. I didn't see I didn't see I didn't see any Gavin Newsom 2028 signs. I didn't see any old faded Biden Harris signs. I didn't see any old faded Harris Walt signs. I didn't see any of those things. The only signs that I saw. And one of them was a guy in in a pickup truck. I thought it was great. He was flying a, thin blue line American flag, and he was flying a Trump flag, and we gave him a good honk there. Way to go. Thumbs up, buddy. Thumbs up. Good job. Now Rhode Island voted for I think I think they got I think it was 51. No. No. No. It's like fifty six forty four, something like that, for Kamala Harris. But Trump was able to win some counties that hadn't been won since Reagan in that election. So that that was pretty cool. But, anyway, had a great time. Now I'll be honest with you. I was a little worried when I left to take a couple days off. Because the last time I took a couple days off, I came back, and it seemed like all you know what broke loose. You folks had not minded the store. But this time, I have to commend you. You did a great job. You did a great job while I was away. So while I was away, I'm sitting there, and I'm, you know, still working while I'm away, you know, scrolling on my phone, looking for for breaking news stories. And I see several stories that I just went, wow. Number one, what? Nine days with no murders in Washington DC? Nine days? People in Washington DC are like, man, we're loving this. We're we're able to get out there and and walk around and and do things. That's absolutely awesome. Right? Yeah. You know it is. You know if you are a a resident of New York City, I mean, Washington DC, that you gotta be loving life right about now. Right? Yeah. Then I saw that that big giant what was it? $400,000,000 fine against Donald Trump or something ridiculous like that from Leticia James. That got thrown out. Yay. Big win for Donald Trump. Then I saw that the stock market hit another record high. Another big win for Trump. Then I saw that Canada moved all the retaliatory tariffs on The United States. Another win for Trump. But this one, I had to kinda double check. Had to double check this one because I was I was scrolling down there, and it says, FBI rage John Bolton's home. And I was like, no. No. They did not. Shut up. And then move along, move along, move along. And then it popped up again. And I was like, oh, no. Hold on. There's something else. And then we find out that, yes, indeed. The FBI did raid John Bolton's home, and I think it's absolutely glorious. I mean, this remember, this was the same guy that had no problems whatsoever with the FBI raiding Mar A Lago. No. No. Let's see how how many well, that that seemed to be the catchphrase all over Washington DC when the FBI raided Mar A Lago. Well, let's see how this plays out. Well, let's see all of the well, it didn't play out very well, did it? No. It did not. In fact, president Trump talked about it. This is, this is Trump talking about the raid on Mar A Lago and John Bolton. Are more raids like that coming, sir? Are more raids like the ones on John Bolton's house coming? More raids? I don't know. So you have to ask the Department of Justice. They raided my house. I can tell you that. They did a big raid on my house. They took away everything that wasn't pinned down, and they took away some of that too. No. They raided Mar A Lago. They started that. And these were bad people that we had in our government before. They raided Mar A Lago. They went into my wife's area. They went into my son's area, my ...

And welcome back to the program. Somebody on the text line said, Charlie, you forgot about Cracker Barrel. Oh, yes. Now here's the thing. We're in Westerly, Rhode Island, right up there near Taylor Swift's $15,000,000 mansion over in the neighborhood of Watch Hill. They've only got one cracker barrel in the entire state of Rhode Island. That's in Coventry, Rhode Island. We are down Southwest Of Coventry, miles and miles and miles away. Gotta take I 95 from Westerly, up to Covington. They're talking about it there. They're talking about this unbelievable debacle of Cracker Barrel, and I don't owe and I'll tell you this little more about the story coming up. But they're trying to say now they're trying to say now that they've still got the barrel. The barrel is still there. They haven't gotten rid of the the barrel, the Cracker Barrel. It's just been turned on its side. Yeah. The barrel is just over on its side. That's all. That's all. It's still there. Still got a barrel. Everything's gonna be great. Everything's gonna be wonderful. That's all it is. Just turn the bell over on its side. That's all we do. That's all we do. Nothing more than that. It's great. Everything's gonna be wonderful. They they I alright. I'll tell you this story real quick. Got home last night, took the dogs for a walk, met up with our neighbors that we always see, walking their dogs, and we had it. We always have great conversation. And they went to Cracker Barrel this weekend because they wanted to see what was going on, And they talked to the waitress. They said, hey. Got some changes happening. And the way you know what the waitress did? She said, oh, let me go get the manager. They had this thing planned out. They had it planned out. So the waitress goes and gets the manager, and the manager comes out there, and he's got his talking points. He is like, oh, all we're doing is there's no no that Cracker Barrel that you saw, online, that was that was just it just looked like that because they were painting it. That's all. No. No. No. And this and, again, we're just keeping the the barrel. We just turned it over on its side, and there's listen. People aren't buying that crap. People aren't buying it. Literally, they're not buying it. John Rich post a picture, this weekend of a Cracker Barrel. I believe it was in Tennessee. Now if you don't think Cracker Barrel should be a very popular place in any of the states, Tennessee might be way up there at the top. The parking lot was practically empty on a Saturday afternoon. Practically empty. This is what happens when you go and you join the Woke Brigade. I don't know who this female CEO is, but when she gets up there and she's talking about, oh, well, it's all positive, and, oh, the reviews are all positive, and everybody's excited. She's lying through her big old giant nose. Absolutely. People are hating oh, wait a minute. Oh, hold on. Maybe the marketing team does love it. Maybe the marketing team thinks it's great. Maybe the people that are in charge of branding or advertising, maybe they like it because they got paid a lot of money to do it. But who they did not ask about it was the customers. They forgot about the people. And I was thinking about this this weekend. When you go to I mean, let's alright. Let's all be honest. The food is good, but it ain't great. Alright? It's good, but it's not great. You could go to Lizard's Thicket, oh, down there in Columbia, and get better country style food than Cracker Barrel. I mean, I I'll be honest with you. I don't know of a whole lot of places around here. Maybe there are a bunch of places around here that you could go get actually better food. People go to Cracker Barrel for the experience of going to Cracker Barrel. They love seeing all the things on the wall. They love to see the things hanging from the ceiling. They love the that homey country feel because it's like you're walking back into an old general store. That gave people something ...

This is, this is Trump talking about the raid on Mar A Lago and John Bolton. Are more raids like that coming, sir? Are more raids like the one on John Bolton's house coming? More raids? I don't know. So you have to ask the Department of Justice. They raided my house. I can tell you that. They did a big raid on my house. They took away everything that wasn't pinned down, and they took away some of that too. Now they raided Mar A Lago. They started that. These were bad people that we had in our government before. They raided Mar A Lago. They went into my wife's area. They went into my son's area, my young son. And, what ...

H2 - Segment 1 - Mon Aug 18 2025 - SC Solicitor David Pascoe about his run for SC Atty General Months ago, and everybody was speculating what his plans were, and we found out this morning. Joining us right now is solicitor David Pascoe. Mister Pascoe, thanks for joining us this this afternoon. How are you? Yes, sir. Doing great, Charlie. I appreciate you having me on. No more speculation today. No. No. As it you you gotta admit, this is like the worst kept secret in the history of South Carolina politics. Right? Absolutely. That's why I didn't play any games. That was when I came up to Greenville a few months ago, I laid it out. I knew then that I was gonna run for attorney general. So what what was it that made you decide to do that? We know that, Alan Wilson will be stepping down here shortly, to run for governor. What what made you throw your hat into the ring here? The corrupt the numb look. I've got four major goals. I laid them out today. I'm gonna lay them out again tomorrow night in Greenville. But the overwhelming reason why I ran or why I'm running is because I'm tired of the corruption in Columbia. And as I've said many times, you cannot ticket corruption, you have to crush corruption. The greatest days of my thirty two years of being a prosecutor was when I was the special prosecutor that took down the Speaker of the House, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, the two majority leaders, and we sent the judiciary chairman of the House to prison. And they were the most rewarding years I had, but they were without a doubt the most challenging years I ever had. And I wanted to go further because corruption in Colombia goes much, much deeper than those convictions. But when I tried to go further, the Supreme Court told me I had to stop because they said, Pascua, you're not the attorney general, so you can't go any further. Well, today, I decided to do something about it, and I'm running for attorney general to get back to Columbia and crush the culture of corruption that we have up there in the general assembly. You know, when, we were at dinner a couple of months ago, I asked you the question, was corruption worse then, or is it worse now? And your answer was? Now. Nobody's watching. At least during the corruption probe, there was some fear and people started doing the right thing, but nobody's watching. I got a phone call I get phone calls every day, certainly every week, but I got one just last Thursday from someone saying, Pasco, the illegal lobbying that is going on up here is incredible. What can we do about it? And I said, I feel your pain. Give me about a year, year and a half, and I'm gonna get up there and we're gonna stop it. So when when and you're gonna make this announcement in Greenville, tomorrow night. What time is that is that, talk gonna be? It's tomorrow night, 06:30, Wade Hampton High School. And this is and I know people are going to say Pasco is overstating it or I'm blowing this up. I promise you all this, please come because it is going to be the most important presentation of any candidate for any office this year because not only am I going to lay out what some of the culture of corruption is in Columbia, but I'm going to tell you exactly what I'm going to do on day one. And I promise you, it's things that will be done on day one and it's things that no other candidate for office has ever thought about even doing. And I'm gonna do those things. Are people going to be shocked? I think they're gonna be shocked at what I say tomorrow that I'm gonna do, but the people are not shocked about the selfish government and the corruption that takes place at the state house. Are we gonna be shocked about the the players? I don't think they will. Really? I don't think they will. And I'm not gonna point out any players right now. I'm not gonna play the game of the Leticia Jameses of the world, up in New York. Prosecutors shouldn't do that, and they should only lay out what the what the fact ...

And welcome to the program on this Monday afternoon as we are broadcasting live from the Anderson. I call it the Civic Center, but I think the actual name is the Anderson, Sports And Entertainment Complex. That's we wanna be very precise about that as we were getting ready for representative Sherry Bigg's Salute to Liberty, that is gonna be going on this afternoon. I'll tell you what. I just walked into the main auditorium. We're in the VIP area right now. Just walked over into the main auditorium. It looks fantastic. It really, really does. It looks absolutely amazing. So it's gonna be a great event tonight. And, if you haven't got your your tickets yet, you can always go online. I think you can go to salutetoliberty.org, or you can go over to Eventbrite and, check out those there now. For an event like this, first term congresswoman, you know, expecting maybe four or 500 people, except tonight, they are saying they've already had reservations for over 1,200, and that is, that is gonna be a huge event. Of course, we got, governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders gonna be here later on this afternoon. And, that is, that's a oh, a huge draw. She is what a a a wonderful, wonderful conservative Sarah Huckabee Sanders is. Let's see. Charlie, I just read an interesting article about Laura Loomer and Lindsey Graham. We'll talk about that article coming up because I have seen that all weekend long. But I guess the big news right now is that Volodymyr Zelensky, was at the White House today. And let me tell you something. You wanna talk about a change between what happened today at the White House and what happened a few months ago at the White House. Everything was different. A couple of months ago, Zelensky walked into the White House with an attitude. So once the Zelensky walked into the White House with with a sweatsuit on and and combat boots, he walked in with with just such arrogance and it you know what? It did not play well with Donald Trump. It did not play well with JD Vance. Today, much more subdued, much more relaxed. In fact, they were joking and kidding around there in the White House about Zelensky's suit. I said the one that attacked you last time. I wanna go back and get this this whole comment here. President Zelensky, you look fabulous in that suit. I said the same thing. Yeah. Look. You look good. I said the same thing. Yeah. It was good. I said the one that attacked you last time. See? That was an I remember that. I apologize to you. Look you look wonderful. No. My first question for you, president Zelensky. In the same suit. You see, I changed your eyes. Maybe yours is better. Much more levity, much more lighthearted, much more, shall I say, respectful of the office of the presidency of the United States. So that happened today. Also, there was there there was some talks about, Zelensky, giving up some land. He said there's there's not gonna be any redrawing of maps. Of course, this is all a negotiation. We will see about that. But remember, it was during the, during the Biden administration that everybody said in order for there to be peace in Ukraine, Ukraine was gonna have to give up something. And old Joe Scarborough even reminded us of that over on Morning Joe today. Let's take a listen to what he said there. Here we go. Hold on just a second. Here's old Morning Joe. Oh, I'm turning the wrong knob here. Hold on. I got a 100 knobs here. Here we go. Wait a minute. Doggone it. Here we are. Thanks, sir. Just again, to set expectations, to be realistic. Even during the Biden administration, every Biden official, including the chairman of the joint chief says they're gonna have to give a plan. They're not gonna like giving up land, but they're gonna have to give a plan, number one. Number two, they're not going to become members of NATO. There may have been people writing articles in the Wall Street Journal or elsewhere saying they have to be members of NATO, but you go around to every European leader, th ...

H2 - Segment 3 - Mon Aug 18 - SC House District 17 Mike Burns Well, everybody talks about, closing the primaries, but how many people are actually doing something about it? Joining us right now is, a state representative from the from the Seventeenth District, Mike Burns. Representative Burns, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well. I am doing well, and I appreciate getting the chance to, talk on your show a little bit about a couple of bills. I hope that, we'll be getting some hearings on them when we go back in January. I filed for many years, I filed the, closed the primary bill, I think, thirteen years now. 13 bill Murphy, thirty three ten. And then I've also filed multiple times. This year's version is, house bill thirty three eleven, which would, bring in watermark paper ballots. So That is and well, let's get to that in just a second. But the the thirteen years you've been filing the these bills, has it surprised you how much pushback you've gotten against closing the primaries here in South Carolina? I'm shocked. There's a, Republican platform issue written in the documents for the state Republican platform. Right. And we have a, we have a huge majority in the, state legislature, a super majority in both houses. Mhmm. And we can't get a hearing on it. And I can tell you why, but you'll have to ask me before I tell you why. Tell us why. Well, many years ago, we had a different, judiciary committee chair. And one of the first years when I filed it, I found out it was never going anywhere. And the the proverbial question is, why not? You know, it's a republican platform issue. Many people across the state are interested in doing this. And the answer I got was some of us can't get reelected if we pass this through. And so it's staying in the trash can. So instead of doing trash can for thirteen years. Instead of doing what the people of South Carolina want, they're just they're too busy covering their necks? Apparently so. That was the answer that, came back. And I can tell you that senator Corbyn who preceded me in the house before he went to the senate, I happen to remember that he filed it before I got down there and filed it. So it's been multiple people who've worked on this, and I'm sure we're not the only two that have worked on it. Let's talk about closing the primary bill first. What now we know that there has been a bill prefiled, but this really doesn't go as far as everybody wants it to because it's still it's pretty ambiguous. Right? The one that was was filed earlier well, late in last session? Well, I filed this one on the first day of pre filing. Mhmm. It's not got any press, obviously. There's another bill that's a closed primary bill, but it doesn't go far as this bill goes. Right. Two differences. The differences between the two are the other bill will let independence crossover without penalty and vote as Republicans. My bill will only let Republicans elect Republicans in the primary and then, of course, in the general, anybody can vote how they want to. Sure. Sure. But if you vote okay. So, have you gotten a lot of support? Because Sarita Edgerton, posted something today over on Twitter or Facebook or something. She said basically the same thing you did that when she talked about this bill, somebody standing next to her said if this gets passed, I'm never gonna get reelected. I mean, that Yeah. That's I mean, that's Serita is the cosponsor on the bill. Steven Frank is. Josiah Magnuson and I are on the bill. Bill Cholmonde supports it. We got we got a lot of local people that support this. I could go on and on and on. Well, how could the local people here don't match up with the rest of the state. Well, that's what I I wanna get to now. How can the people of the Upstate help you out in getting this bill passed? Well, here's what's happened that, is probably not known, but I was, encouraged to file a letter on the last day of session when we left in May, asking for demanding ...
