California Energy Markets Associate Editor Abigail Sawyer and Dan O'Brien, senior modeling analyst for Energy Innovation, discuss the implications of the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act and other federal policy shifts on the Western energy landscape. He offers insight about how the legislation will affect energy costs in different states and how some states might push back against new policies as the nation's energy future transforms.
In a special edition of The POWER Podcast, released in collaboration with the McCrary Institute's Cyber Focus podcast, POWER's executive editor, Aaron Larson, and Frank Cilluffo, director of the McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security and Professor of Practice at Auburn University, discuss the evolving power grid and cybersecurity challenges. Specifically, they highlight the shift taking place from centralized power stations to more distributed energy resources, including solar farms and wind turbines. The conversation touches on the importance of a reliable power grid and the need to protect critical infrastructure. “From a national security standpoint, from an economic standpoint, from a public safety standpoint, if you don't have power, all these other systems are somewhat irrelevant,” Cilluffo said. “There's no infrastructure more critical than power.” Cilluffo noted that artificial intelligence (AI) is requiring increasingly more power, which can't be ignored. “If we want to be AI dominant, we can't do that if we're not energy dominant,” said Cilluffo. “The two are in inextricably interwoven—hand in glove. And if you start looking at where the country wants to be technologically, if we want to lead, we really need to continue to double down, triple down, and look at all sorts of sources of energy as well.” While renewables are clearly leading when it comes to new generation being added to the grid today, emerging technologies including small modular reactors, fusion power, deep dry-rock geothermal, and space-based solar power, are on the horizon, promising potentially game-changing energy options. “And not to put a fine point on it, but you mentioned so many different forms of energy, and I'm reminded of the old test, the A, B, C, or D, all of the above. This sounds like it is clearly an all of the above,” Cilluffo proposed. Meanwhile, the enormous energy buildout in China was discussed. China is not just leading, but truly dominating the world in the construction of wind, solar, nuclear, coal, and energy storage projects in 2025, both in terms of capacity and projects under development. This leadership is evident across all five sectors, frequently accounting for the majority, or at least a plurality, of new global construction and installation. “China is a primary focus of a lot of our [Cyber Focus] podcast discussion, but it's a race we cannot afford to lose, whether it's around AI, quantum. And, I think you're spot on; to get there, they recognize the need to really quadruple down on energy,” said Cilluffo. “I still think that we [the U.S.] want to be at the vanguard driving all of this.” And while it's widely known that cybersecurity is critically important to energy systems, it's often not prioritized the way it should be. “Everyone needs to be cyber aware, cyber informed,” Cilluffo said. “These are issues that we have to invest in. It can't be an afterthought. It has to be something that everyone thinks through. And the reality is, don't think it's someone else's problem: a) it's all of our problems, and b) don't think that it can be looked at after the balloon goes up—you need to be thinking all of this well in advance.”

In this episode of The New Stack Agents, Andrew Lee, co-founder of Shortwave and Firebase, discusses the evolution of his Gmail-centric email client into an AI-first platform. Initially launched in 2020 with traditional improvements like better threading and search, Shortwave pivoted to agentic AI after the rise of large language models (LLMs). Early features like summarization and translation garnered hype but lacked deep utility. However, as models improved in 2023—especially Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 3.5—Shortwave leaned heavily into tool-calling agents that could execute complex, multi-step tasks autonomously. Lee notes Anthropic's lead in this area, especially in chaining tools intelligently, unlike earlier models from OpenAI. Still, challenges remain with managing large numbers of tools without breaking model reasoning. Looking ahead, Lee envisions AI that can take proactive actions—like responding to emails—and dynamically generate interfaces tailored to tasks in real-time. Do you play the jerk role and counter draft to deny an opponent a vital resource by taking it yourself, even if it's not your absolute top priority? Markets can take many forms: Static Markets: Where a set of items is always available, and players choose from it. Dynamic Markets: Prices might change based on supply and demand. Rotating Markets: Items might enter and exit the market over time, creating a flow of new opportunities. "I-Cut-You-Choose" Style Markets: While sometimes a separate mechanic, some games blend this, where one player sets up a market or splits resources, and another player chooses first. We discussed how open drafting games are very closely related to market games, but ultimately, the Market mechanic adds layers of tactical decision-making, player interaction, and often, an exciting push-your-luck element. It's about optimizing your purchases, anticipating others' moves, and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of available options. Adam Helman has spent his entire career in emergency management. But after working for the New York State Department of Health during the COVID pandemic, he wanted something new. So in 2023, Adam moved from responding to a public health emergency to responding to the climate emergency, in addition to other hazards utilities have dealt with for decades. Just two years into his role as director of emergency services for the energy services company Avangrid, he's already seen a number of back-to-back emergencies caused by everything from winter storms to gas leaks.This week on With Great Power, Adam shares with Brad some of the ways that Avangrid's emergency response operations are evolving as intense weather and other hazards put more physical and mental stress on first responders. We can't quite make the same claim, but at Wood Mackenzie's 2025 Solar and Energy Storage Summit, we did record a crossover episode. One of the most powerful tools in the fight against climate change is the money sitting in investment portfolios - especially the trillions of dollars invested on behalf of public retirees. That's money that could continue to fund fossil fuel development, or help pay for climate solutions instead.New York City has implemented an ambitious Net Zero plan for its public pensions. That plan includes divesting from some fossil fuel companies and investing billions of dollars in climate solutions. One company benefiting from that investment is NineDot Energy. Wedged between an elementary school and a big box shopping center in the Northeast Bronx, NineDot Energy is operating a battery farm that the city's utility company, Con Ed, can call on to help relieve the grid when it gets overstressed. “The batteries hold a combined three megawatts of battery storage. That's enough to power about 3,000 New York City households for four hours on a hot summer day. Last summer, the battery farm was called half a dozen times, which was enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a combined 24 metric tons. That's the equivalent of nine thousand car trips on the Cross Bronx Expressway.Currently, the city has the dirtiest energy grid in the state. More than 90% of its power comes from fossil fuels. NineDot Energy is still in growth mode, but battery farms like this could eventually help the grid transition to renewable sources, like wind and solar.“The sun only shines when nature tells it to; the wind only blows when nature tells it to, but people use electricity when they decide to,” explained Adam Cohen, co-founder of NineDot Energy. “A battery helps mediate that process. It pulls in the extra power when it's available, and then puts it back out when people call for it.” On a recent visit to the Bronx facility, 12-year-old Virtue Onoja showed off a mural she helped paint along with other students from the elementary school across the street, envisioning a future powered by cleaner energy.“One thing about me, I'm definitely an artist,” she said. “I drew a clear blue sky, no pollution, no nothing [and] beautiful yellow flowers and the sun.”There are also drawings of windmills and electric school buses. “There's still a lot of pollution, not just in the Bronx, but just in New York in general,” Onoja said. “All of this is the goal that we want to achieve.”This is an excerpt from the latest season of How We Survive.
