Independent legal and political analyst Dr. Mkhuseli Vimba says despite COSATU’s objections, there appears to be little legal basis to successfully challenge Parliament’s impeachment committee composition. Parliament has confirmed a 31-member impeachment committee to investigate President Cyril Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala farm matter. This follows a constitutional court ruling that Parliament acted unlawfully in blocking the Section 89 report in 2022. The committee includes nine ANC members, five DA representatives, three MK Party members, two EFF members, and one representative from each of the other 12 parties. Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions has rejected the committee's composition as unconstitutional. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to an independent legal and political analyst, Dr. Mkhuseli Vimba.

COSATU has rejected Parliament's Impeachment Committee composition, saying it is unconstitutional. The union says limiting the Committee to 31 members cut the ANC's representation to 30%, below its 40% share in Parliament. The Committee was formed after a Constitutional Court ruling to probe allegations around foreign currency found at President Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm. COSATU warns the setup undermines the 2024 election result and may face legal challenge. We spoke to Matthew Parks, COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU says it fully supports its affiliate, the South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union, SACCAWU in opposing planned job cuts at Pick n Pay. SACCAWU says the retailer intends to retrench 22,000 workers and has accused the company of trying to bypass collective bargaining by serving notices directly to staff. The union also alleges Pick n Pay wants to cut benefits including transport allowances, subsidised meals and Sunday premiums. SaccaWu will hold a press conference in Johannesburg today to set out its response. Pick n Pay has not commented on the allegations. Swe spoke to SACCAWU National Spokesperson, Sithembele Tshwete.

Fuel prices will rise sharply across South Africa from Wednesday, adding pressure on struggling households. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced petrol will go up by R3.27 per litre and diesel by R6.19, with paraffin and LPG also increasing. The Government cites global oil price volatility and supply constraints for the hike. Cosatu warns the increases will drive up transport, food and essential goods costs. The Federation is questioning if enough is being done to protect workers and the poor. COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks joins us to elaborate on their concerns.

As workers across South Africa prepare to mark May Day, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union is calling on its members to turn out in full force in support of the Congress of South African Trade Unions May Day rallies. Amid rising living costs, austerity pressures, and deep challenges within the criminal justice system, including understaffing, unsafe working conditions, and deteriorating infrastructure, POPCRU says the fight for worker dignity is far from over. We spoke to Richard Mamabolo, Media and Communication Officer and national spokesperson for the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU).

The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU has welcomed the 2026 increase in the Basic Conditions of Employment Annual Income Threshold from 1 May. The Federation has also raised serious concerns about past failures to adjust the threshold which governs access to overtime pay, CCMA protections, unemployment insurance and paid leave. COSATU is calling for a comprehensive review to expand coverage and strengthen labour rights. We spoke to COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator Matthew Parks

Die vakbondfederasie Cosatu sê hy gaan dringend met die regering in verbinding tree om werkbare oplossings te vind vir die voortdurende krisisse wat dreig om die Suid-Afrikaanse Poskantoor in duie te laat stort. Volgens die Poskantoor se sakereddingspraktisyns sal hulle waarskynlik moet bereken of enige redelike vooruitsigte bestaan om dié staatsinstelling te red. Die woordvoerder van Cosatu, Matthew Parks, sê dit is ook kommerwekkend dat SAPO nog nie die beloofde 3,8 miljard rand van die nasionale tesourie ontvang het nie:

Die vakbondfederasie Cosatu verwelkom die regering se besluit om die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Weermag se soldate te onttrek aan die Verenigde Nasies se vredesending in die Demokratiese Republiek van die Kongo. Suid-Afrika dra sedert 1999 sy soldate by tot die sending, MONUSCO. Matthew Parks van Cosatu sê vredesendings kan slegs suksesvol wees met die nodige onderhandelinge en politieke wil van die strydende partye:
