COSATU has welcomed the fall in consumer inflation to 4.3% in July from 5% in June, but warns workers remain under severe financial pressure from rising living costs and debt. The union is calling for an end to the conflict in the Middle East, saying lower oil and fuel prices could help bring inflation back towards the 3% target. It is also urging the Reserve Bank to avoid raising the repo rate and government to restore fuel levy relief for commuters. Matthew Parks is COSATU's Parliamentary Coordinator
South Africa's unemployment crisis is deepening, with the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey showing the official unemployment rate rising to 33.6%, while the expanded rate stands at 43.8%. A further 345,000 people have joined the ranks of the unemployed, while overall employment has declined. COSATU says these figures are more than just statistics, they are evidence of an economic crisis that demands urgent and decisive action. The federation is calling for a major stimulus package, investment in public and municipal services, support for SMMEs, infrastructure investment and an expansion of public employment programmes. We spoke to Matthew Parks, Cosatu Parliamentary Coordinator.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is warning of a crisis in KwaZulu-Natal, as commuter bus companies threaten to halt operations over unpaid government subsidies. Several major operators say they have not received payments from the provincial Department of Transport since April, despite contractual obligations. With reserves now depleted and rising fuel costs adding pressure, services that thousands rely on daily to get to work, school and healthcare facilities could come to a standstill as early as next week. We spoke to COSATU spokesperson, Zanele Sabela.

Trade union federation COSATU has welcomed the appointment of Deputy Minister Seiso Mohai as Chairperson of the Public Investment Corporation, PIC. The state-owned asset manager oversees more than three point six trillion rand in public servant pensions and social security funds. The Federation says Mohai brings stability and a strong anti-corruption record to the fund. COSATU is calling for urgent appointment of worker and depositor board members and full public disclosure of all PIC investments. We spoke to COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks.
COSATU says while Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo's resignation as Public Investment Corporation Chairperson comes amid troubling allegations, the PIC has made significant progress in tackling corruption since the state capture era. Parliamentary Coordinator Matthew Parks says the federation remains concerned by reports of alleged wrongdoing, stressing that the PIC manages more than R3.6 trillion in investments, with 87% belonging to the Government Employees Pension Fund. Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo announced his resignation as chairperson of the Public Investment Corporation, saying the decision is in the country's best interests and will help ensure the PIC's stability.Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Cosatu Parliamentary Coordinator Matthew Parks
COSATU has called on politicians to allow the Public Investment Corporation, PIC Board to complete its oversight work without interference. The federation says it is concerned about alleged attempts to disrupt investigations into suspended CEO, Patrick Dlamini and PIC deals including Acapulco and Lanseria Airport. COSATU has welcomed the Board's referral of the Acapulco matter to the SIU and is urging President Ramaphosa to issue a proclamation for a full probe with the Hawks and Auditor-General. We spoke to Matthew Parks, COSATU's Parliamentary Coordinator.
African Bank has started formal consultations with union Sasbo over a restructuring that could cut 1,200 jobs and close 90 branches. The bank says costs are outpacing risk-adjusted revenue, and it has already looked at savings in IT, procurement and property. Interim CEO Zweli Manyathi says no final decisions have been made and the bank will work with the union through the Section 189A process. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU National Spokesperson, Zanele Sabela...
Labour federation the Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU is holding its National Day of Action today alongside affiliates including SAMWU and SADTU. Members are marching to the National Treasury in Pretoria to hand over a memorandum. The memorandum is also directed to CoGTA, SALGA and the Department of Water and Sanitation. Labour Federation, COSATU has raised concerns over reported shortages and staffing pressures at the National Prosecuting Authority. COSATU says the NPA is facing a shortage of prosecutors, compounded by early retirements and high vacancy rates, at a time when the country is battling rising levels of crime, corruption, and increasingly sophisticated criminal syndicates. The federation warns that ongoing budget constraints and understaffing are weakening the state's ability to effectively prosecute crime and deliver justice. We spoke to Matthew Parks, COSATU's Parliamentary Coordinator.
COSATU will stage demonstrations in all provinces today over rising living costs. The federation says food, electricity, water and transport have become unaffordable while wages fall behind inflation. COSATU argues workers now earn less in real terms than a decade ago, forcing many into debt to cover basics. We spoke to COSATU's National Spokesperson, Zanele Sabela.
Stephen Grootes speaks to Zanele Sabela COSATU Spokesperson, about the regulator’s warning that GEMS’s proposed 7.5% contribution hike may be financially unsound and could undermine the scheme’s long-term stability, including risks to its solvency and funding gap concerns. COSATU argues that despite these warnings, civil servants cannot continue absorbing steep medical aid increases amid weak wage growth, insisting that affordability must be prioritised and that GEMS should first tackle inefficiencies and governance costs rather than shift the burden onto members.

Daar is kommer oor werksekerheid.

Africa Melane chats to COSATU’s Matthew Parks ahead of the State of the Nation Address to discuss the federation’s expectations and what organised labour hopes to hear from the President Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”.
