COSATU says it expects President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address, SONA to address South Africa's 42.4 % unemployment, 1 % growth, poverty, inequality, crime and corruption. The labour union is calling for faster fixes at Transnet and Metro Rail, debt relief for Transnet, stronger commuter security, an end to austerity, more frontline funding, a push on National Health Insurance, and a "Marshall Plan" against violent crime among other demands. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks... And Unite For Change warns that many municipalities are on the brink of collapse and must not be treated as a footnote in President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address tonight.

COSATU has described the delayed salaries at Impendle Local Municipality in KZN as a serious crisis, calling on the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to intervene urgently and ensure workers are paid. The municipality is facing severe financial distress following its failure to pay employee salaries for January 2026. According to the Cogta, this is a repeated inability to meet financial obligations, as this follows a similar default in May 2025 and a narrowly averted crisis in December 2025. The department's assessment confirms a critical liquidity crisis. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) national spokesperson Zanele Sabela reacts.
COSATU is calling on government to scrap the R372 million budget for the Defence Force Day parade in Thohoyandou. The union says the spending is a "grotesque waste of funds" that could address pressing needs in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). COSATU is citing struggles in the SANDF, including budget cuts, mismanagement and poor conditions for soldiers, such as deteriorating barracks and reduced meals. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is standing in solidarity with Venezuela, condemning US aggression and calling for global action against imperialism and racism. The union is organizing protests and pickets, including an international action day this morning and a march in Sandton on Saturday. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU's 1st Deputy President, Mike Shingange
The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU has welcomed a new gazette empowering labour inspectors to enforce pension fund payment compliance. The move targets employers who deduct contributions from workers' salaries but fail to pay them, with over 15,000 employers defaulting last year, affecting 600,000 workers. The security sector, municipalities and automotive industry are key offenders, with R7.26 billion in outstanding contributions. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU Spokesperson Zanele Sabela
The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU is warning that 230 jobs are at risk at British American Tobacco's Heidelberg factory due to the growing illicit tobacco trade. British American Tobacco is closing its South African manufacturing plant, citing the rise of cheap, illegal cigarettes as a major factor. COSATU says the illicit trade now accounts for 75% of total sales, with illegal products selling at a quarter of the price of legitimate cigarettes. Elvis Presslin spoke to COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks
The South African Communist Party, SACP will hold its annual commemoration for struggle icon Joe Slovo today in Soweto. SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila is set to deliver the keynote address at the Heroes' Acre in Avalon Cemetery. Alliance partners, including representatives from the ANC and Cosatu, are expected to attend the event. This comes against a backdrop of ongoing strains in the tripartite alliance, particularly over the SACP's plans to contest the upcoming local government elections independently. Elvis Presslin spoke to SACP spokesperson, Mbulelo Mandlana

Jay Naidoo reflects on COSATU's 40-year legacy, South Africa's democratic journey, and the sacrifices that shaped the nation. He speaks candidly about corruption, failed leadership, collapsing services, inequality, and the urgent need for values-driven renewal. Naidoo calls on citizens, business, and unions to reclaim integrity, rebuild trust, and drive meaningful change.
