COSATU has welcomed the seven-year prison sentence handed to former MP Vincent Smith for his role in the Bosasa corruption scandal. Smith pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering and corruption charges. He failed to disclose BOSASA payments and didn't declare R28-million in income between 2009 and 2018. COSATU is calling for decisive action against senior military officials allegedly involved in the looting of the South African Army Foundation. The union says reports of corruption and mismanagement are "extremely concerning" and demands that those responsible be charged and prosecuted. SANDF personnel are reportedly facing poor working conditions, including unpaid suppliers and inadequate equipment. The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU has criticized the 2026/27 Budget saying it fails to address unemployment, poverty and inequality. While welcoming some allocations for health, education and social security, COSATU says the focus on balancing books has missed the opportunity for a bold stimulus package. The union is concerned about no funds for 10,000 labour inspectors and inadequate support for struggling municipalities. Trade union federation COSATU in KwaZulu-Natal has strongly condemned the collapse of the business rescue process at sugar producer Tongaat Hulett. The company's administrators last week applied to the High Court to end rescue proceedings and move to provisional liquidation, after key sale agreements lapsed earlier this month and no viable rescue remained possible. The Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU says the latest Stats SA figures show a positive shift in the labour market.This follows the release of the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, which showed that the unemployment rate decreased by point five of a percentage point to 31point four-percent in the fourth quarter of 2025. COSATU is calling on the ANC‑led government to strengthen frontline public and municipal services, boost infrastructure investment and expand public employment programmes and relief for the poor and unemployed. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in KwaZulu-Natal is outraged over the non-payment of municipal workers' salaries in Impendle. Workers are still waiting for their January salaries, which were due on the 23rd, and are facing financial hardship. COSATU is calling for immediate intervention and demands the full payment of outstanding salaries, saying the situation reflects poor governance and financial mismanagement. COSATU has described the delayed salaries at Impendle Local Municipality in KZN as a serious crisis, calling on the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to intervene urgently and ensure workers are paid. The municipality is facing severe financial distress following its failure to pay employee salaries for January 2026. According to the Cogta, this is a repeated inability to meet financial obligations, as this follows a similar default in May 2025 and a narrowly averted crisis in December 2025. COSATU is calling on government to scrap the R372 million budget for the Defence Force Day parade in Thohoyandou. The union says the spending is a "grotesque waste of funds" that could address pressing needs in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
