SUNDAY EXTRA: Why Opposition Might Be the Best Sign You're on the Right Track

Hope Church - Fort Worth, TX

In episode 21 of season four of the Sunday Extra podcast, Pastor Matt Sturdivant, Pastor Jeremy, Pastor Jake Myers, and Pastor Luke Myers gather around the table to recap and expand on the previous Sunday's sermon from Acts 9:18-43. The big idea of the message was that God develops who He calls — and while a calling can be immediate, the preparation for that calling is always a process. Four key lessons were drawn from the passage: immediate obedience doesn't guarantee immediate results; God often does His deepest work in hidden seasons; opposition should be reframed as confirmation, not contradiction; and we all need people to help us grow and step into our calling. The team then digs into the portion of Acts 9 that didn't make it into Sunday's sermon — Peter's private ministry in Acts 9:32-43. Peter heals a paralyzed man named Aeneas in the name of Jesus Christ, and raises a beloved disciple named Dorcas back to life in Joppa. Both miracles result in widespread belief, with Acts 9:35 noting that "all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord." Pastor Matt also highlights Acts 9:31 as a powerful summary statement on the state of the early church — walking in the fear of the Lord, encouraged by the Holy Spirit, and multiplying — not merely surviving. The conversation closes with a rich discussion on the "challenge of the decades," a framework originally taught by their founding pastor, which maps out the spiritual and personal challenges unique to each decade of life. The team encourages those under 30 not to despise their development season, and those over 40 to stay faithful even when progress feels slow. They also challenge listeners who feel lonely to take personal responsibility — to get into a group, take a risk, and stop waiting for community to come to them — because as Pastor Matt puts it, you cannot fulfill your calling in isolation. "If you smeeeeeeeeeeeeell what the HBTG boys are cookin'?!"Ohhh yeeeeah that's right brothers and sisters, Alfredo, Nathan, and Producer Bill are BACK with another cage match of an episode of History by the Glass beyond inspired by the former Portland professional wrestling legend who once owned the Wilshire Tavern (4052 NE 42nd Ave.) in the immigrant blue collar turned moneyed NE Portland Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood. The anachronistic cash only, beer and wine only, crock pot food and snacks only Wilshire Tavern is a portal to the 1930s still inexplicably living and breathing in this beautiful, Portlandia chic part of town and we could not be more thrilled. And did we mention it was owned in the '60s and '70s by wrestling legend Kurt Von Poppenheim (nee Jake Pappenheim), he of over 1,100 professional bouts from the Portland Armory to Madison Square Garden? And did we live our American Dream by over-indulging in all things wrestling in this episode? You bet your sweet ass we did. So climb up to the top turnbuckle with us, spread your arms wide, and Superfly Splash into another tall frosty mug of HBTG!Bar visit and episode recording: Saturday, May 16, 2026 HBTG theme song: "Frozen Egg" by Lame Drivers Interlude music: "Right Track" by Lame Drivers

Welcome to part two of my interview with John Glynn, a novelist, memoirist, and the editorial director of Hanover Square Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. His brand new novel (out May 12!) is “The Lost Book of Lancelot,” a queer retelling of the legend of Camelot that Publisher's Weekly called “a fresh, fun take on a classic” that's “entertaining, vivid, and immersive.”Today we're talking about the inner stuff involved in writing and the literary arts–the doubts, the beliefs, and personal development that writing both requires and delivers. We covered:- A peek into the process of how publishers sell and market books- And a peek into why many would-be authors get a “no” from publishers- Why feeling insecure and vulnerable are signs you're on the right track- The two times the inner critic is the loudest–and how he approaches it- Feeling nostalgic for earlier times in his life when writing felt more urgent because it was a lifeline- What RuPaul gets wrong about relationships- The psychic parties his aunt used to throw (a genius idea that I totally want to steal!)Connect with John on Instagram at @glynner85.For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com.Thank you for listening! Research promoting safety at rail grade crossings has saved lives by reducing collisions, the second-leading cause of rail-related fatalities in the United States. Trespassing by the public on railroad tracks is a particularly dangerous practice that has contributed to a recent upward trend in pedestrian fatalities. Today we talk to TTI's Jeff Warner, manager of the Institute's Multimodal Freight Program, about the various strategies to reduce collisions at grade crossings. Warner recently won the Hoy A. Richards Career Achievement Award at the National Rail Crossing Safety Conference.

If you don't know where you're going, how do you know you're on the right track, how close you are, not headed to somewhere else, or even, if you've arrived? Lazily drifting on a river of a summer afternoon is a worthy use of time. But if you want to move along with purpose, focus your energy, and track your progress, the smart and savvy traveler will define her destination, break the journey into manageable phases, and keep heading intentionally, consistently toward the place she wants to be. She also keeps track of where she's been to know how far she's come along the path. As the old ones say, When we understand where we've been and where we're headed, we clarify the potential we have to make our ideas, visions and goals come true.   Story Prompt: Think of a moment in time when you felt lost. Where have you come from? Where are you now? Where are you headed? How will you get there? Portland, Oregon is a long way from New York City boys, from Boston and PA...but still we love our Irish bars...and we revere our proud, independent, authentic AF bar proprietors. Katie Bullard and Carl Simpson started the legendary Dublin Pub in 1983, first in SE Portland where it attained peak notoriety and helped make Portland craft brewing history, before moving to its current location in 1989 on the site of another infamous bar -- The Faucet -- in the Raleigh Hills/Deep SW Portland/unincorporated Washington County area of the metro (6821 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy). In an industry notably devoid of strong, almost tall-tale women owners and proprietors, Katie (aka "Mama Dub") was an aberration as the heart and soul of the DubPub for the better part of 40 years until her death in October of 2024. Nate and Alfredo visited 10 days before St. Patrick's day to chop it up with current owner (and original Katie Bullard hire) JT Mackey to learn how this beloved bar bridges its generational clientele gap and otherwise soak in the middle aged craic of the place. “'To hell with the handkerchief,' said Walter Mitty scornfully. He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last."The Secret Life of Walter MittyBy James Thurber1939Born and raised in the tucked-away Mountain Park Plaza where Lake Oswego meets deep SW Portland (11830 Kerr Pkwy, 97035), Walter Mitty's Restaurant & Bar has provided a languid home for drinking day dreamers since 1982. And much like the ineffectual protagonist of the classic short story (that very loosely inspired the original bar founders) -- a man who would rather be the hero of his own fantasy world than deal with an increasingly unsatisfying reality -- your three podcast heroes, Alfredo, Nathan, and Producer Bill, mounted their bar stools for another world-saving episode of History by the Glass. Nominated three straight years for our Audience Choice Episode tourney by determined fan of the bar and pod (Robyn V), Walter Mitty's is what it is without trying too hard to be anything it's not. It's uncool. It's unironic. Despite the name, it's not an homage to much of anything. Which of course, makes it absolutely perfect in all its '80s oak and glass and green carpeted glory. The numbers are staggering, but the stories are even more urgent: sex trafficking thrives where demand goes unchecked and myths cloud our judgment. Today we sit down with human rights attorney Yasmin Vafa, co‑founder and executive director of Rights for Girls, to pull the curtain back on how this market really works—and why centering girls' voices is the key to stopping it. From courtroom biases that turn victims into defendants to the hobby boards where men casually review the people they buy, we map the hidden infrastructures of exploitation with clarity and care.Yasmin breaks down the “abuse to prison pipeline” and explains how forced criminality and self‑defense cases trap survivors—often Black girls—in adult courts. We discuss adultification bias, the blurred line between trafficking and prostitution, and language that normalizes harm. Then we go straight to the root: demand. Drawing from the report Buyers Unmasked, we examine buyer attitudes, the role of pornography and entitlement, and why credible buyer accountability programs focus on changing beliefs, not just counting arrests.Policy is where culture meets consequence. We compare full decriminalization—removing penalties for buying, pimping, and brothels—with the survivor model adopted in places like Sweden and Maine, which decriminalizes the sale of sex while holding traffickers and buyers to account. You'll hear how fines can fund survivor services, how major sporting events attract sex tourism, and why the “Sex Buying Isn't A Game” campaign tackles this surge head‑on. Practical takeaways include how to support survivor‑led services, advocate for buyer accountability laws, and bring The Right Track documentary to your community. If this conversation moved you, subscribe, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review telling us what policy change you'll champion next.

That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him
