Bongani Bingwa speaks to the debate around youth unemployment in South Africa following ANC National Chair Gwede Mantashe’s sharp question: “The ANC has given you a fishing rod, must it now catch fish for you?” Bongami Bingwa speaks to amaBhungane’s investigation revealing how a R3.5-billion proposal to the National Skills Fund, meant to train 5,500 artisans, was instead redirected to prop up the struggling state-owned entity PetroSA. Bongami Bingwa speaks to the larger issues of accountability, whether young South Africans were denied real opportunities, and what this diversion of skills funding means for trust in government-led employment and training initiatives. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. In this candid and hard-hitting interview, Alec Hogg speaks to Gerhard Papenfus, CEO of the National Employers' Association of South Africa, about his open letter condemning Black Economic Empowerment. Papenfus argues that BEE has distorted markets, damaged entrepreneurship, and entrenched elitism rather than broad-based upliftment. He challenges prevailing political narratives, questions the sustainability of empowerment through ownership transfers, and calls for merit-based economic reform to restore growth, accountability, and genuine inclusion.
In today's BizNews Briefing, NEASA CEO Gerard Papenfuss takes aim at mining minister Gwede Mantashe in a pointed open letter on BEE. Veteran money manager and RECM founder Piet Viljoen argues that South African assets remain undervalued relative to an overowned US market, while the bearish Magnus Heystek urges caution amid a "false dawn" on the JSE. Plus: Dr Iraj Abedian explains why Iran's latest uprising could prove fundamentally different.

From Joburg to Washington, mining is being reshaped by politics and power. Peter Major joins Alec Hogg to unpack how Donald Trump's “drill, baby, drill” revival is fuelling a new U.S. mining boom while South Africa keeps digging itself into decline. They dissect Gwede Mantashe's missed opportunity at the Joburg Indaba, the syndicates gaming the JSE, and why China's dominance of rare earths could rewrite the global balance of power.
“I do not see imported liquified natural gas as a long-term solution for South Africa or even a base power solution. I see it as a, as a peaking and a balancing solution,” energy analysts Chris Yelland tells Peter Bruce in this edition of Podcasts from the Edge. But gas is all the rage. Minerals minister Gwede Mantashe wants to spend a fortune building new infrastructure and South Africa has built its urgent new trade proposals with Donald Trump around a huge new standing order for imported LNG. "Gas base supply is an option for South Africa. Base supply becomes an option when you've got significant indigenous gas resources where you drill a hole in the ground and natural gas comes out. You don't have to drill a hole in a foreign country, take out the gas, turn it into a liquid, transport it thousands of kilometres across the sea, convert it back into a gas, compress it, and pipe it to where it's needed.”

ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe has criticised incoherent and populist messaging within the party, saying it confuses supporters. Speaking at the OR Tambo Region's Special Regional General Council in the Eastern Cape, Mantashe urged the ANC to strengthen its ideological and intellectual capacity to remain a leading voice for progressive change. This follows the ANC's decision to take action against MP Malusi Gigaba and suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for remarks deemed as deliberate "de-campaigning." Gigaba claimed the ANC had "lost its way," while Mchunu warned the party risked collapse. Elvis Presslin spoke to Gift Ngqondi, ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Head of Communications
The South African Communist Party, SACP has removed ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe from its Central Committee, escalating tensions within the Tripartite Alliance. The decision follows the SACP's plan to contest the 2026 local elections independently, a move that has sparked sharp debate with the ANC. Mantashe, a long-time SACP member and current Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, downplayed the dismissal, but the ANC has warned that the SACP's actions could fracture their decades-long partnership. Elvis Presslin spoke to SACP spokesperson, Mbulelo Mandlana and ANCYL Spokesperson, Zama Khanyase
Amerika is Suid-Afrika se derde grootste handelsvennoot.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe as Acting Police Minister with immediate effect. He'll hold the role until Professor Firoz Cachalia steps in from August, following his retirement from Wits University. Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has confirmed that his deputy, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, is on leave. This comes amid explosive allegations by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of a criminal syndicate within SAPS leadership. Elvis Presslin spoke to Security Strategist and retired Interpol Ambassador, Andy Mashaile
Minerals and Petroleum Minister, Gwede Mantashe, says mining in this country “can’t be killed for the sake of fresh air.” It is a clear indication that we could soon see fracking in the Karoo as South Africa hunts for its own natural gas supply, as the current supply is set to end in the next two years. John Maytham speaks to energy expert, Chris Yelland who is managing director of EE Business Intelligence. They discuss the country’s gas options and whether it is more viable to mine our own, or import. Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show. The “embarrassment of being removed” is “foremost” in the thinking of President Cyril Ramaphosa. So says political analyst Piet Croucamp who deems the break between the president and African National Congress (ANC) Chair Gwede Mantashe as irreparable. “Mantashe was the person who knocked on Thabo Mbeki's door to tell him that time is up - and he was the one who knocked on Jacob Zuma's door to tell him time is up. If there's one thing that Ramaphosa and those around him fear most, it is that one day the National Executive Committee of the ANC makes a decision which could be perceived as a Motion of No Confidence and Gwede Mantashe comes and knocks on your door.
