In episode 8 of the GSGEDM Behind-The-Scenes podcast, the GSGEDM Team appreciates Detroit for its local community and its international reach as a hub for dance music. Movement Festival has been the foundation of techno tourism in Detroit, since its beginnings as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001. It is also the foundation of the GSGEDM film - shooting began there in 2011 to tell The Story of Detroit Techno. Movement encourages the Memorial Day Weekend pilgrimage that techno fans all over the world take to Detroit to get a taste of its one-of-a-kind dance music scene. It is that time of year again, and the team is longing for the techno-induced, party-packed weekend that makes for a magical time in Detroit. In honor of this, please come along on a Movement “meditation”, reminiscing with stories and memories from members of the GSGEDM team (David Grandison & Reggie Dokes), as well as Belgium's DJ Red D, Detroit journalist Gary Graff, and Fusicology's Asya Shein.-Support the independent filmmaking process and get yourself some GSGEDM merch! http://gsgedm.com/shop-Stay updated with GSGEDM on Instagram and Facebook!https://www.instagram.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/https://www.facebook.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/-Visit Hart Plaza and watch a DEMF recap video on MusicOrigins.orghttps://www.musicorigins.org/item/the-detroit-electronic-music-festival/-Learn more about topics covered in the film and Detroit culture in the Detroit Techno 101https://www.musicorigins.org/detroit-techno-101/ -Get connected with Detroit music journalist Gary Graff:https://twitter.com/GraffonMusic-Check out DJ Red D:https://www.facebook.com/djreddbelgiumwww.instagram.com/djreddbelgiumofficial-Learn more about Asya Shein:https://asyashein.com/bio/Check out Fusicology:https://www.fusicology.com/-Learn more about Movement:https://www.movement.us/https://twitch.tv/paxahau-Check out The Music Origins Project: https://www.musicorigins.org/technomecca/- Check out Reggie Doke's album i.heard.Love:https://reggiedokes.bandcamp.com/album/i-heard-love-Support Black Lives Matter Detroit:https://www.blmdetroit.com/-Support Detroit Will Breathe:https://detroitwillbreathe.info/-Support Black Lives Matter:https://blacklivesmatter.com/-Be sure to check out Output, to make all your music-making and sound designing dreams come true!https://output.com/

“This is what edits are supposed to sound like.” ~Juno Records In 2014 after nearly a decade of collecting records, and playing various roles in the dance music scene of Detroit and West Michigan, the Pontchartrain moniker was born. What began as tools for his own personal dancefloor use turned into head-turning release after release of his vision for edits of forgotten classics and sample-heavy house cuts. In a short couple of years, his release catalog has gained support from various well respected artists, garnered him international bookings and acclaim, and earned him the A&R position for Sleazy McQueen’s highly sought after Whiskey Disco imprint. The sounds he chooses, reflect the obvious influences from Detroit’s past, with a new face and ideology that continues to entertain and surprise. Paxahau Radio Episode 008 - @pontchartrain
Back when radio ruled and the boombox gave us mixtapes, live broadcasts were the very essence of the Detroit club-music scene. Technology was turning cassettes into CDs and Rebecca’s frequent trips to Harmony House fueled her music collection. She poured over the cherished tunes that were spun on Saturday nights at the State Theatre’s legendary “Club X”. Inspired by Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, the Godmother of House Music, who was reigning over the airwaves, it was only a matter of time before Rebecca would satiate her musical appetite as a disc jockey. Rebecca is now a seasoned radio DJ, having mixed on Detroit public radio station WDET 101.9's Sunday Sessions show, 89.3 WHFR out of Dearborn, as well as various internet radio stations hosted in Detroit and worldwide. She just released her second EP of 2016 under the moniker 313 Acid Queen. In January, she released “A Trip to the Moon” an EP arranged to accompany Georges Méliès’ classic 1902 silent film “Le Voyage Dans La Lune.” Paxahau Radio Episode 007 - @rebeccagoldberg
Dan Bain says that DJs just play other people’s music. His humility, however, cloaks the fact that his DJ sets sound like his own harmonious song. Vocals that ripple, keys that drip, and buoyant percussion are the standard to this Detroit native. Bain cannot be whittled down to a genre. Having traversed the dunes of house and techno, to the crest of indie and trip-hop, he maintains a unique presence. His sense of victory comes by reach- ing even one person in the audience, although the majority hold on for the duration of the set. His sonic language comforts the dancer who is heartbroken, gyrates the weekend warrior, enlightens the lost, and flirts with the rest, even leaving his own heart on the dance floor. With an ever-expanding music collection that includes his favorite 12"s, LPs and 45s, Dan’s depth of knowledge hints at an insatiable quest of the universal language. On any given night, whether his message is through hip-hop, heartfelt house, or the quickened pace of techno, there is always a gentle let-down, but never a conclusion. You’ll have to return for the next chapter in the story. Paxahau Radio Episode 006 - @dan-bain
Sire to the Sampled Detroit imprint, Chuck Daniels’s career extends back to an era when info lines were fundamental, mistakes made a mix more compelling, and DJs sought not to be superstars, but to cast spells on rooms full of people through thoughtfully-crafted acoustics. There was neither GPS nor auto-sync, and getting lost on the road was as much a part of the adventure as getting lost in the music. Innately authentic, Daniels’s DJing continues to embody the true and original essence of underground dance music culture. A sous chef of sound, his sets play like a well-perfected recipe: just blend jazz, techno and disco over a heavy base of house, then simmer with funk and soul. Best served hot from the front left speaker. Paxahau Radio Episode 005 - @chuck-daniels

Paxahau Radio Episode 002 with @lorendetroit / 10.12.16 At just 22 years old, Lauren "Loren" Vellucci has already established herself as an integral voice of the Detroit underground scene. She is a resident DJ at TV Lounge as well as an artist on the newly launched recording label, My Baby. Loren's style is defined as futuristic minimal techno.
For this week's mix we have a Movement Detroit special edition. This is my take on the vibe of the electronic music festival that has taken place at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit since 2000. I have personally attended every year since 2001 and it has had a huge impact on my musical tastes and development. While the festival has changed over the years it has managed to retain a core uniqueness when compared to other festivals. The organizers (now the 10th year managed by Paxahau) have struck a delicate balance between commercial sustainability and artistic integrity. This mix is made up of tracks either by or remixed by artists on the lineup for this year's festival. It starts out more tech-house and slowly works it way through the vibe of the festival. The ending I like to explain as a festival goer's exhaustion induced hallucination that they traveled back in time to the early days of the festival :-P Enjoy! Rich Korach discovered underground electronic music in 1994, finally encountering the sound that would transform the rest of his life. Growing up just north of Detroit, Rich witnessed performances from some of the early pioneers of techno. Shortly after immersing himself in the underground warehouse scene in Detroit, he became an active DJ himself. The next decade included such highlights as: being a resident DJ for Detroit’s legendary production company, Paxahau, playing gigs at: the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (2005 and 2008), Space – Ibiza, Weekend Club – Berlin, and all across the U.S. Rich even had an impromptu tag session with one of his musical heroes of the time, Richie Hawtin, in 2005. - In late 2008, Rich moved to San Francisco to thwart the cold and live in one of the most diverse and beautiful cities in America. Since then, his performances in the Bay Area underground have caused quite the stir, resulting in a residency with promotions powerhouse As You Like It (AYLI) and a steadily increasing demand for performances. In 2011 he played alongside a wealth of artists, including Tiger and Woods, Deniz Kurtel, Iron Curtis, Matthias Tanzmann, Benoit & Sergio, Dave Aju, Mike Huckaby, Nicolas Jaar, and Lee Curtiss. To say Rich Korach’s sound is an instant classic is understood to those who’ve become converts to his shows. His is an insatiable appetite for the unexpected, which makes watching his next move upward and onward such a joy. - Recorded using Traktor Scratch Pro with vinyl control and a KONTROL X1 for effects/looping.
