Detroit's DJ Cent debuts on Simmetry Sounds with rave-inspired anthem A significant new release from a true architect of the Detroit scene. DJ Cent (Cynthia Travis) is releasing “Get Your Whistle” on the Simmetry Sounds label on March 6th, 2026. As a protégé of the late K-Hand, DJ Cent's sound is steeped in authentic Detroit house history. This track is a high-energy tribute to rave culture's “whistle” tradition, capturing the collective energy she's become known for during her sets at Movement Festival and sets at Detroit's TV Lounge. Why this is a story now: The Heritage: DJ Cent was recently honored in the 2025 “Respect the Architects” exhibit at Movement, recognizing her role in building the Detroit community. The Mentorship: Her direct lineage to K-Hand, the “First Lady of Detroit Techno,” informs the track's raw, pulsating energy. The Impact: Beyond the decks, she is a mentor at Detroit's Underground Music Academy, bridging the gap between the city's foundations and its future. . . In this collaboration episode of Poducer with NSW, we sit down with Detroit-based producer DÊTRE (pronounced “Detra”) an artist whose path runs from guitars and rap vocals to intricate bass design, blending grit, groove, and raw self-expression. He grows weed by day (as an irrigation manager) to building bass-heavy tracks rooted in emotion and precision, DÊTRE opens up about his creative evolution, mental health, and the balance between passion and stability. We explore the meaning behind his name, how Vital and additive distortion shaped his sound, and why he sometimes records his own vocal hooks instead of relying on samples. We dive into Detroit's warehouse scene, Movement Festival, and the “homie fest” culture that keeps underground music alive. Along the way, DÊTRE shares unfiltered thoughts on panic attacks, moderation, and staying grounded while navigating the modern music industry from corporate festivals to small, community-built events.

“I started taking piano lessons when I was four… and by twelve I had swapped classical sheet music for jazz improv—I was playing from my head, not the page,”—Ian Fink dives deep into the layered roots of Legacy Black Detroit, bridging generational migration, jazz lineage, and the raw ingenuity of Detroit's music scene. In this rich, in-depth episode of Detroit is Different, host Khary Frazier sits down with Ian Fink—a pianist, producer, and conduit of Detroit's legacy Black culture—to unpack how jazz camp with Rodney Whitaker and Marcus Belgrave set the tone for his artistry, how early classical training at age four paved the way for profound improvisation, and how his classical-jazz foundations seamlessly birthed a sonic switch into house and techno influenced by Detroit icons like Theo Parrish and Scott Grooves. They dig into family history—from Dexter/Linwood's Jewish-Black narratives to movement between Detroit and West Bloomfield—bringing light to how personal origin stories shape cultural creation. Ian chronicles his transition from working through Video Seven—an artist collective of critical thinkers turned performers—to independently launching Freak Press, producing annual showcases during Movement Festival, and crafting a forthcoming solo piano album under his label. Along the way, he reflects on the significance of reading Black liberation texts, embracing intergenerational Black resistance, and returning to musical performance with ‘a revitalized sense of purpose.' By threading together stories of legacy, creativity, and reinvention, this episode shows how Detroit's past and future collide in the sound and vision of a modern-day local legend. In this episode of the Skiff Meetings Podcast, we speak with Andrea Cadotto, director of sales at Visit Detroit. Cadotto sheds light on Detroit's dynamic evolution and promising future in large-scale events and urban development. Legacy and Reputation Visit Detroit, established in 1896, was the first-ever convention and visitors bureau. Detroit features many historical firsts, including the first stoplight and the first paved road. The city has continuously positioned itself at the forefront of innovation. Cadotto emphasized that this legacy provides Visit Detroit with invaluable experience and a trailblazing spirit that sets it apart. Detroit recently hosted the NFL Draft, with 750,000 visitors joining the event over three days. This event showcased the city's logistical capabilities, vibrant community spirit and enthusiasm for high-profile events. Annual events like the Detroit Grand Prix, Movement Festival, and Jazz Festival cement its reputation as an events hub. Ongoing Transformation Over the past decade, Detroit has undergone a deep transformation. The city has made substantial investments in infrastructure, including enhancements to the convention centers and improvements to the local transportation system. Both public and private investments are supporting the revitalization of the city's economic and cultural landscape. Detroit's skyline and infrastructure are witnessing significant growth, with several new developments, particularly in the hospitality sector. The recent openings of the Godfrey Hotel and the Cambria Hotel are worth noting. Also noteworthy is the highly anticipated new addition at the Hudson site — set to become the city's second tallest building. The reopening of the Michigan Central Station, now a hub for Ford's autonomous vehicle research, marks another milestone in Detroit's journey towards becoming a futuristic city. Local Community Benefits from Events The influx of events and visitors brings substantial economic benefits to the local community. Cadotto highlighted how local media partnerships and community involvement are pivotal in maximizing the impacts of hosting events in Detroit. These initiatives drive economic activity and foster a sense of pride and ownership among residents, who are eager to showcase their city's resurgence and vibrancy. As Detroit continues to redefine itself through strategic developments and a robust events calendar, it is set on a promising path. For event planners and business leaders looking for a location that offers historical richness and modern amenities, the city presents an irresistible proposition with its unique blend of grit and innovation. Visit Detroit is ready to welcome the world so that everyone can experience the city's unique charm and capabilities.

Ash Lauryn balances between two worlds, with an old-school house-head foundation and a digital age suaveness, blending her skills as a DJ, writer, curator, and radio host to champion black dance music. "You can trace techno's origins to the seminal 1988 album Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which featured many producers that are now regarded as techno pioneers." We discuss Detroit techno, Frankfurt's electronic music museum and more in this month's Critics' Roundtable. As we approach the end of May, and with it, Movement Festival in Detroit—one of the longest-running dance music events in the world—Resident Advisor returns to a discussion about electronic music's roots. In this month's Critics' Roundtable, RA music critics Kiana Mickles and Andrew Ryce talk with producer Chloe Lula about the newest release from Detroit "techno soul" stalwart Eddie Fowlkes and a breakout album from a newer Detroit name, DJ Girl, who just released on Planet Mu. The trio also discuss how techno's origins in Detroit's Black communities continue to be contested. The Museum of Modern Electronic Music in Frankfurt, which opened last year (and was written about recently in The New Yorker), has overlooked the city's key role in the creation and dissemination of techno, sparking backlash from the electronic music community. Mickles and Ryce lay out the implications of the continuous omission of Detroit from techno's narrative. Why is electronic music's origins an ongoing debate, and how do we honour its progenitors as electronic music moves further away from its foundations into the mainstream? Listen to the conversation in full. Tracklist: Eddie Fowlkes - Shake Your Hips DJ Girl - Technician Rhythim Is Rythim - It Is What It Is Jossy Mitsu - World's End

There's a distinct possibility that two of the stories Josh tells in this episode have been told on the show before. If that turns out to be the case, you'll get new and exciting details! One of the side effects of drinking while making the show is that details get fuzzy. Jimmy tells us about the Movement Festival in Detroit. Cory, Rob, and Jimmy talk about going to see Nekrogoblikon and GWAR in Chattanooga. We invite Aaron Minich, the keyboardist for Nekrogoblikon to join us for a future episode (make sure to tag him on Instagram @aarynstar if you want him to interview with us!) and invite the Goblin to include us in his shitposting. Josh tells the story of singing Bodies on stage with Drowning Pool years ago. This may not be the first time he's told this story on the show. Then Josh tells the story about a Pride & Prejudice video he and some friends made for an English class back in college. It involved a samurai sword, a hot dog penis, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and ramen noodles. Then of course we get into movies again, with a relatively spoiler-free review of Top Gun: Maverick. To celebrate Soma's electro sub label @avoidantrecords new vinyl release ‘Dark Planet', we have invited new Avoidant artist, DJ Godfather! Listen here: https://avoidant.fanlink.to/darkplanet With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there's no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard' Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism. Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards' turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit's Packard Plant. An intimidating force behind the decks, he's known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only. For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit's Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks. Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it's me. My one music that I'm passionate about. Love.” Tracklist via -Spotify: http://bit.ly/SRonSpotify -Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Slam_Radio/ -Facebook: bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup Archive on Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/slam/ Subscribe to our podcast on -iTunes: apple.co/2RQ1xdh -Amazon Music: amzn.to/2RPYnX3 -Google Podcasts: bit.ly/SRGooglePodcasts -Deezer: bit.ly/SlamRadioDeezer Keep up with SLAM: fanlink.to/Slam Keep up with Soma Records: fanlink.to/SomaRecords For syndication or radio queries: harry@somarecords.com & conor@glowcast.co.uk Slam Radio is produced at www.glowcast.co.uk
Episode 89 features a discussion about Alison Wonderland's announcement for her album, Tiesto teasing unreleased Avicii collabs, and lineup reveals for both Ever After and Movement Festival 2022.
In this episode, Sean and Emily discuss the importance of creating safety for your own physical body before you practice movement, whether it's partnered or a solo practice. They cover the importance of warming up, tuning in and listening to your body, and modifying training based on how your body is doing. In episode 8 of the GSGEDM Behind-The-Scenes podcast, the GSGEDM Team appreciates Detroit for its local community and its international reach as a hub for dance music. Movement Festival has been the foundation of techno tourism in Detroit, since its beginnings as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001. It is also the foundation of the GSGEDM film - shooting began there in 2011 to tell The Story of Detroit Techno. Movement encourages the Memorial Day Weekend pilgrimage that techno fans all over the world take to Detroit to get a taste of its one-of-a-kind dance music scene. It is that time of year again, and the team is longing for the techno-induced, party-packed weekend that makes for a magical time in Detroit. In honor of this, please come along on a Movement “meditation”, reminiscing with stories and memories from members of the GSGEDM team (David Grandison & Reggie Dokes), as well as Belgium's DJ Red D, Detroit journalist Gary Graff, and Fusicology's Asya Shein.-Support the independent filmmaking process and get yourself some GSGEDM merch! http://gsgedm.com/shop-Stay updated with GSGEDM on Instagram and Facebook!https://www.instagram.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/https://www.facebook.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/-Visit Hart Plaza and watch a DEMF recap video on MusicOrigins.orghttps://www.musicorigins.org/item/the-detroit-electronic-music-festival/-Learn more about topics covered in the film and Detroit culture in the Detroit Techno 101https://www.musicorigins.org/detroit-techno-101/ -Get connected with Detroit music journalist Gary Graff:https://twitter.com/GraffonMusic-Check out DJ Red D:https://www.facebook.com/djreddbelgiumwww.instagram.com/djreddbelgiumofficial-Learn more about Asya Shein:https://asyashein.com/bio/Check out Fusicology:https://www.fusicology.com/-Learn more about Movement:https://www.movement.us/https://twitch.tv/paxahau-Check out The Music Origins Project: https://www.musicorigins.org/technomecca/- Check out Reggie Doke's album i.heard.Love:https://reggiedokes.bandcamp.com/album/i-heard-love-Support Black Lives Matter Detroit:https://www.blmdetroit.com/-Support Detroit Will Breathe:https://detroitwillbreathe.info/-Support Black Lives Matter:https://blacklivesmatter.com/-Be sure to check out Output, to make all your music-making and sound designing dreams come true!https://output.com/
