In this episode of the Skiff Meetings Podcast, we speak with Andrea Cadotto, director of sales at Visit Detroit. Cadotto sheds light on Detroit's dynamic evolution and promising future in large-scale events and urban development. Legacy and Reputation Visit Detroit, established in 1896, was the first-ever convention and visitors bureau. Detroit features many historical firsts, including the first stoplight and the first paved road. The city has continuously positioned itself at the forefront of innovation. Cadotto emphasized that this legacy provides Visit Detroit with invaluable experience and a trailblazing spirit that sets it apart. Detroit recently hosted the NFL Draft, with 750,000 visitors joining the event over three days. This event showcased the city's logistical capabilities, vibrant community spirit and enthusiasm for high-profile events. Annual events like the Detroit Grand Prix, Movement Festival, and Jazz Festival cement its reputation as an events hub. Ongoing Transformation Over the past decade, Detroit has undergone a deep transformation. The city has made substantial investments in infrastructure, including enhancements to the convention centers and improvements to the local transportation system. Both public and private investments are supporting the revitalization of the city's economic and cultural landscape. Detroit's skyline and infrastructure are witnessing significant growth, with several new developments, particularly in the hospitality sector. The recent openings of the Godfrey Hotel and the Cambria Hotel are worth noting. Also noteworthy is the highly anticipated new addition at the Hudson site — set to become the city's second tallest building. The reopening of the Michigan Central Station, now a hub for Ford's autonomous vehicle research, marks another milestone in Detroit's journey towards becoming a futuristic city. Local Community Benefits from Events The influx of events and visitors brings substantial economic benefits to the local community. Cadotto highlighted how local media partnerships and community involvement are pivotal in maximizing the impacts of hosting events in Detroit. These initiatives drive economic activity and foster a sense of pride and ownership among residents, who are eager to showcase their city's resurgence and vibrancy. As Detroit continues to redefine itself through strategic developments and a robust events calendar, it is set on a promising path. For event planners and business leaders looking for a location that offers historical richness and modern amenities, the city presents an irresistible proposition with its unique blend of grit and innovation. Visit Detroit is ready to welcome the world so that everyone can experience the city's unique charm and capabilities.

Ash Lauryn balances between two worlds, with an old-school house-head foundation and a digital age suaveness, blending her skills as a DJ, writer, curator, and radio host to champion black dance music. Discovering her passion for music in her native Detroit, she was inspired to start DJing in her current residence Atlanta, taking inspiration from the legendary Kai Alce of NDATL and Vicki Powell. After seeing a gap in representation for Black millennials in electronic music, she started her blog Underground and Black, which has since grown into a wide-ranging platform covering her annual Movement Festival party, monthly NTS show, and RA podcast of the same name. https://undergroundandblack.com/about/ Recorded on June 4, 2023 in Long Island City, Queens NY. "You can trace techno's origins to the seminal 1988 album Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which featured many producers that are now regarded as techno pioneers." We discuss Detroit techno, Frankfurt's electronic music museum and more in this month's Critics' Roundtable. As we approach the end of May, and with it, Movement Festival in Detroit—one of the longest-running dance music events in the world—Resident Advisor returns to a discussion about electronic music's roots. In this month's Critics' Roundtable, RA music critics Kiana Mickles and Andrew Ryce talk with producer Chloe Lula about the newest release from Detroit "techno soul" stalwart Eddie Fowlkes and a breakout album from a newer Detroit name, DJ Girl, who just released on Planet Mu. The trio also discuss how techno's origins in Detroit's Black communities continue to be contested. The Museum of Modern Electronic Music in Frankfurt, which opened last year (and was written about recently in The New Yorker), has overlooked the city's key role in the creation and dissemination of techno, sparking backlash from the electronic music community. Mickles and Ryce lay out the implications of the continuous omission of Detroit from techno's narrative. Why is electronic music's origins an ongoing debate, and how do we honour its progenitors as electronic music moves further away from its foundations into the mainstream? Listen to the conversation in full. Tracklist: Eddie Fowlkes - Shake Your Hips DJ Girl - Technician Rhythim Is Rythim - It Is What It Is Jossy Mitsu - World's End

There's a distinct possibility that two of the stories Josh tells in this episode have been told on the show before. If that turns out to be the case, you'll get new and exciting details! One of the side effects of drinking while making the show is that details get fuzzy. Jimmy tells us about the Movement Festival in Detroit. Cory, Rob, and Jimmy talk about going to see Nekrogoblikon and GWAR in Chattanooga. We invite Aaron Minich, the keyboardist for Nekrogoblikon to join us for a future episode (make sure to tag him on Instagram @aarynstar if you want him to interview with us!) and invite the Goblin to include us in his shitposting. Josh tells the story of singing Bodies on stage with Drowning Pool years ago. This may not be the first time he's told this story on the show. Then Josh tells the story about a Pride & Prejudice video he and some friends made for an English class back in college. It involved a samurai sword, a hot dog penis, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and ramen noodles. Then of course we get into movies again, with a relatively spoiler-free review of Top Gun: Maverick. To celebrate Soma's electro sub label @avoidantrecords new vinyl release ‘Dark Planet', we have invited new Avoidant artist, DJ Godfather! Listen here: https://avoidant.fanlink.to/darkplanet With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there's no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard' Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism. Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards' turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit's Packard Plant. An intimidating force behind the decks, he's known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only. For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit's Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks. Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it's me. My one music that I'm passionate about. Love.” Tracklist via -Spotify: http://bit.ly/SRonSpotify -Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Slam_Radio/ -Facebook: bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup Archive on Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/slam/ Subscribe to our podcast on -iTunes: apple.co/2RQ1xdh -Amazon Music: amzn.to/2RPYnX3 -Google Podcasts: bit.ly/SRGooglePodcasts -Deezer: bit.ly/SlamRadioDeezer Keep up with SLAM: fanlink.to/Slam Keep up with Soma Records: fanlink.to/SomaRecords For syndication or radio queries: harry@somarecords.com & conor@glowcast.co.uk Slam Radio is produced at www.glowcast.co.uk

This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with Queen Quet, originally aired in November of 2018. The Anthropocene tells the story of compounding injustice towards people and planet. It tells the story of growth for growth's sake, living beyond boundaries sacredly assigned to us. In this episode, we are honored to be in dialogue with Queen Quet, Chieftess and Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation, who is striving for justice on the front lines of the most pressing Anthropocentric intersections: climate change, resource extraction, corrupt and negligent government bodies, encroaching development, and exploitative tourism. Queen Quet, Marquetta L. Good-wine is a published author, computer scientist, lecturer, mathematician, historian, columnist, preservationist, environmental justice advocate, film consultant, and “The Art-ivist.” Queen Quet was selected, elected, and enstooled by her people to be the first Queen Mother, “head pun de bodee,” and official spokesperson for the Gullah/Geechee Nation. In episode 8 of the GSGEDM Behind-The-Scenes podcast, the GSGEDM Team appreciates Detroit for its local community and its international reach as a hub for dance music. Movement Festival has been the foundation of techno tourism in Detroit, since its beginnings as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001. It is also the foundation of the GSGEDM film - shooting began there in 2011 to tell The Story of Detroit Techno. Movement encourages the Memorial Day Weekend pilgrimage that techno fans all over the world take to Detroit to get a taste of its one-of-a-kind dance music scene. It is that time of year again, and the team is longing for the techno-induced, party-packed weekend that makes for a magical time in Detroit. In honor of this, please come along on a Movement “meditation”, reminiscing with stories and memories from members of the GSGEDM team (David Grandison & Reggie Dokes), as well as Belgium's DJ Red D, Detroit journalist Gary Graff, and Fusicology's Asya Shein.-Support the independent filmmaking process and get yourself some GSGEDM merch! http://gsgedm.com/shop-Stay updated with GSGEDM on Instagram and Facebook!https://www.instagram.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/https://www.facebook.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/-Visit Hart Plaza and watch a DEMF recap video on MusicOrigins.orghttps://www.musicorigins.org/item/the-detroit-electronic-music-festival/-Learn more about topics covered in the film and Detroit culture in the Detroit Techno 101https://www.musicorigins.org/detroit-techno-101/ -Get connected with Detroit music journalist Gary Graff:https://twitter.com/GraffonMusic-Check out DJ Red D:https://www.facebook.com/djreddbelgiumwww.instagram.com/djreddbelgiumofficial-Learn more about Asya Shein:https://asyashein.com/bio/Check out Fusicology:https://www.fusicology.com/-Learn more about Movement:https://www.movement.us/https://twitch.tv/paxahau-Check out The Music Origins Project: https://www.musicorigins.org/technomecca/- Check out Reggie Doke's album i.heard.Love:https://reggiedokes.bandcamp.com/album/i-heard-love-Support Black Lives Matter Detroit:https://www.blmdetroit.com/-Support Detroit Will Breathe:https://detroitwillbreathe.info/-Support Black Lives Matter:https://blacklivesmatter.com/-Be sure to check out Output, to make all your music-making and sound designing dreams come true!https://output.com/

Truncate on The DJ Sessions presents the "Virtual Sessions" 12/02/20 About Truncate - After being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90's in Los Angeles, a teenage David Flores was hooked. He started DJing across Southern California on the DIY warehouse, backyard, desert, and rave circuit. His style then was as varied as the local scene - a myriad of sounds ranging from house to acid to techno to hardcore. After a few years solely DJing, he began releasing original music under the monikers David F & Audio Injection, which landed him on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & LA label Droid Recordings. His association with Droid Behavior began in 2003 as resident at the now defunct yet infamous and internationally acclaimed Interface event series alongside Drumcell and Raiz. He currently runs a new event series together with Drumcell and Oktaform named “Observe”. In early 2011, he started the project Truncate to focus on the deeper, raw side of techno. His Truncate releases early on gained critical acclaim from world class underground talent such as Modeselektor, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Eats Everything, Joris Voorn, and many more. Since then, he has provided remixes for artists across the musical spectrum including Kink, Slam, Loco Dice, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Ellen Alien, Miss Kittin, Carl Cox & Nicole Moudaber. He has also released original works on 50 Weapons, Ultramajic, Blueprint, Ei8ht, Figure and of course his own imprint Truncate. He has also collaborated with Jimmy Edgar, Chambray and most recently started a new project with Ben Sims as ‘Assailants' which they've released on their own imprint ‘Obscurity Is Infinite'. A rigorous international tour schedule has since followed, including stops and regular appearances at the most prestigious venues and events, including Berghain in Berlin, Fabric in London, Concrete in Paris, The Movement Festival in Detroit, Womb in Tokyo, Dimensions Festival in Croatia, Awakenings in Amsterdam, Output in New York, and many more. With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is still no slowing down for David. He continues to shape an evolving sound and to champion the Los Angeles underground. For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe. When it comes to performances, Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of community. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a place for everyone to come as they are, and enjoy the people they are with, centered around the ancient idea of the communal dance. It's at times like these, when we remind ourselves of what will come again, that we need people like Pontch to give us a little escape. tune in folks... Friday is here once more. Bio: Mark Moss was raised outside of St. Louis and discovered electronic music through his Uncle who was getting all the new sounds out of Chicago and Detroit in the late ‘80’s. He began learning to DJ at the tender age of 12 with Acid House and the new rave sounds coming out of Belgium and the UK. During early 1991 Mark discovered what was then known as "breakbeat", which became hardcore and later Jungle. He immediately fell in love with hardcore and the emerging Jungle sounds. Mark's family moved to the Detroit area in 1992 and he began going to parties, noticing a lack of (and hatred of) Jungle in the Detroit scene. Mark then began his mission to aid Detroit in its Jungle deficit and began playing anywhere he could, from parties to houses to radio to retailers such as Urban Outfitters in Ann Arbor. In 1997 8en helped found Kinetics, (the original Detroit Jungle night and crew) and became a rotating resident/ face in the Detroit scene with hundreds of appearances at legendary venues such as the Motor Lounge, Alvin’s, the Blind Pig and the Magic Stick. Mark took a 6 year hiatus from Detroit; winning the Daytona Beach annual DJ contest and becoming runner-up in URB magazine’s first mixtape contest, then retired from Dj-ing in 2001. Upon moving back to the Detroit scene in Summer 2006, he began to sneak his way back in with an onslaught of old school hardcore and Jungle. In 2009, he was the only D&B DJ on the bill for the 3 Day Movement Festival, choosing to do an all vinyl, history of D&B set. In 2010, he co-founded the Everyday Junglist Podcast, which started out showcasing local talent, but after over 250 episodes, the talent also featured regional DJ's and D&B heavyweights from overseas. (no longer affiliated) In 2012, 8en joined forces with Konkrete Jungle Detroit to bring a new level of quality and dedication to the Detroit D&B scene, which featured a 3 hour, 4-person tag team set at the 2014 Movement Festival. 8en's style ranges from early Hardcore sets to the newest, upfront tunes coming out each week, as well as productions of his own. While he focuses on the more Jungle aspects of D&B, you never know what style you will hear in one of his sets. 8en is known for quick mixes, a deep deep selection and a great knowledge on set building and flow. Hardcore Will Never Die! 8en’s Top 5 of All Time: 1. Dread Bass “Dead Dred (Origin Unknown RMX)” 2. Acen “Close Your Eyes (Optikonfusion)” 3. DJ Hype “The Chopper” 4. We're continuing our stint in the trenches on the frontlines of festival season this week. Half of the THUMP staff spent some time at Detroit's Movement Festival—the yearly Memorial Day dance music celebration that some have taken to calling “Techno Christmas.” Features Editor Michelle Lhooq and Associate Editor Ezra Marcus explain how the festival's non-stop slate of afterparties—both official and under-the-radar—make it electronic music endurance test unlike any other. We also spent some time at one of the weirdest EDM festivals going: the absurd patriotic spectacle of the Speedway, Indiana's Snake Pit, which happens in the infield of the Indy 500 as the race goes on. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 56 comes from Detroit's Blank Code label founders and DJ/producing duo, PROJECT 313. Composed of Nick Bien and Chad Parraghi, they have been active in Detroit across multiple projects dating back to the 90s. In 2007, they founded the Blank Code platform, focusing mostly on event promotions, with the label coming to fruition 18 months ago. Since then, it has taken off, with them signing a slew of heavy-hitters: their sixth and latest EP, Strumpet, features Drumcell, Material Object and Brendon Moeller. They are also the curators of the Underground Stage at Detroit's Movement Festival in next year's edition, May 24-26, 2014 (in which they already took a big part this year). For the third consecutive year, they will partner up with Droid from LA to deliver another Interface/Scene after-party boasting yet again a breathtaking lineup (their last after party event consisted of 14 acts, across 3 rooms, in just 1 night). Musically, we are proud to showcase their distinct style, characterized by deep and intricate layers of dub, bass, and minimalist techno. The next 100 minutes is a live recording from when they played a live set at Oktave's 4-Year Party in Chicago last month: slow-building and ever-hypnotic, so listen and enjoy. Both shared similar influences as Detroit Techno bridged the gap between their coasts. Both share over a decade of DJ experience crossing dance venues coast to coast. As solo production artists, they continue to push their growing sound, Ds and Cs music production however, is a mix of old school and nu school creating a unique but modern day sound. With obvious ties to Detroit, their sound digs into those influences and creates a new feel. Keep your eye on this young DJ/Producer as he propells Miami to the cutting edge of electronic music!!

He continued to built the foundation of his sound while developing his roots in west Michigan as he bounced between the underground techno scenes of Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto in the early ’90s. His EPs Black Kamanche, Confessions, Tentación, and Caja de Ultima Hora “the remixes” are all released on Black Nation Records. Since moving to Miami in 2009, Ray has been featured in a number of clubs and private events including multiple gigs during WMC. He headlined at Space Techno Loft, Grand Central, Treehouse, and Overkill Warehouse Party Art Basel (Miami Beach); but also performed for Detek at The Works during Movement Festival 2011 in Detroit while keeping busy with international gigs at Decapolis, Pure, and Club Velvet in Panama City, Panama headlining with Marco Carola; and the Laberinto Producciones Music Festival @ La Planicie in Lima, Peru.
