THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Lads, lasses, and leprechauns of good taste—have I told you lately that you're absolutely legendary? You are the heartbeat of this podcast, the reason I spend my days swimming in Celtic tunes instead of, I dunno, training for a competitive Guinness - drinking contest (which I'd obviously win). And it's all thanks to you. Your support isn't just appreciated—it's the very thing that keeps this show from running on sheer luck and leftover whiskey fumes. You fund our genius sound engineer (who makes me sound like I actually know what I'm doing), the wizardly graphic designer, the tirelessly dedicated Celtic Music Magazine editor, and the promotional magic that spreads this music farther than a wandering Irish storyteller. Your generosity buys the music you love and gives me the time to carefully craft each episode—rather than just chucking in a tin whistle solo and hoping for the best. And as a patron, you're not just supporting the show—you're practically knighted by the Celtic music gods themselves. You get exclusive, ad - free, music - only episodes before anyone else (because you're fancy like that). You help shape the Celtic Top 20 with your votes. You unlock free music downloads, sheet music, and your very own private feed to listen your way—whether through Patreon or your favorite podcast app. All this for just $3 a month. That's right—less than the cost of one fancy coffee (or roughly 0.003% the cost of a pint in Dublin on St. Patrick's Day). And yet, that tiny sum keeps the music alive, keeps the community thriving, and keeps you at the very heart of it all. So join us today! Let's keep this music going forever—or at least until we all get distracted by a parade and a questionable amount of irish whiskey.

I'm Sydney Lockhart. I solve murders, most of which I'm the primary suspect. My fiancée, Ralph Dixon, and I came to New Orleans to get married. Instead, he's been arrested for a double murder, and I'm hunting for the real killer. Assisting me are a twelve-year-old voodoo queen, a ghost detective, and my crazy cousin Ruth. Wish me luck. I'll need it.“Kathleen Kaska always delivers, and once again she doesn't disappoint in Murder at the Pontchartrain, the sixth book in her delightful 1950s era Sydney Lockhart Mystery Series. —Lois Winston, bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries.Kathleen Kaska's writing is original with some of the best, most authentic dialogue I've read. I promise, you'll be hooked on Murder at the Pontchartrain and Kaska's style of storytelling and want to read the entire series. Lots of soft-hearted moments as well as nail-biting tension. Truly, a master of the genre.—Karen C. Fitzjerrell, winner of Gold Medallion Award for Historical Fiction“Pour yourself a Sazerac cocktail and enjoy a rollicking ride through New Orleans where deadly shenanigans will keep you turning pages.” —Daniella Bernett, author of A Mind To Murder“Sydney Lockhart is sharp, sassy, sexy hijinks and can solve complex mysteries as smartly as anyone on the planet. In Murder at the Pontchartrain, she's at her best, with the crazy characters and convoluted twists and turns, this time taking you into the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter.” —Rebecca Marks, author of the Dana Cohen Mystery SeriesSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Donald Rice of Poitin Band sent a couple thank yous: "Marc, Thanks so much for including our reel set on the upcoming show. Boatsmen starts with me playing clawhammer style banjo which takes a while to learn. Anyway, we appreciate being included on your wonderful podcast. I listened today from Sicily where my wife and I are visiting some friends and their lovely cat, Thai. Slain" He also wrote: "Marc, Thanks for including the photo of Poitin Band and our Irish polka set on the Courting Tales episode of the podcast. That picture was taken last year at the Old Crossing Treaty Park in northern Minnesota where we played at the Chautauqua and French - Canadian/Metis Festival. It's a great multi - cultural festival and we are booked again for this annual event in late August 2022. We are so proud to be part of your great podcast." Shel O'Toole emailed: "Hi Marc, I shared a link to your podcast page with the whole network of Irish muso's in the greater Ballarat region of Victoria, Australia. I'm not sure how many members there are but definitely more than a few. Hopefully you'll be getting more input from Australia soon. I'm a bit jealous you are in Scotland. One of my grandmothers hails from Ayr. I hope to get there one day and explore that fine country. Meanwhile I'm loving the music from both Scotland and Ireland." Woodland Folk emailed some flower and foot photos. You can see what I'm talking about when you visit the shownotes. I also posted a photo from a run that I took on my most recent Celtic Invasion of Scotland. We ran around the Estate we were staying in. They had cleared the trees up there. So this is not the most dramatic of pictures. But it was a fun run.

Dustin Alexander also known as Pontchartrain is an American musician and DJ. Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. Heavily funk-infused and sample-laden original productions, edits and reworks that border on brand new versions of the track, and sets that string together a wide array of sounds that all center around the idea that dancing and feeling music are the main goals. In this episode we talk lawsuits, the art of ripping CD's, online relationships, Myspace Tom and how Pontchartrain is apart of COVID-19 history. Today’s guests for Kiss My Arts are a local young trad band from South Leitrim and North Roscommon who join Mary Blake to have a chat about how they got into music, the last two years together and even play a few tunes. Gan Ainm are Katie Moreau (flute & tinwhistle), Louise Gaffney (concertina & tinwhistle), Tara Noone (concertina & vocals) and Fiachra Guihen (guitar & harp). All of these young musicians started playing as children with the Pádraig Sweeney School of Traditional Irish Music and are well established on the local trad music scene having played at numerous venues around the county over the last two years. Earlier this year, the band entered and won the North West Talent Contest and they are now promoting their debut album 'Across Lands' recorded with the help of Paul Gurney in Real World Studios in Longford.
For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe. When it comes to performances, Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of community. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a place for everyone to come as they are, and enjoy the people they are with, centered around the ancient idea of the communal dance. It's at times like these, when we remind ourselves of what will come again, that we need people like Pontch to give us a little escape. tune in folks... Friday is here once more. Welcome to the first episode of Season 2! This was originally going to be an additional bonus episode for Season One, but harvest, crush, and a new tasting room job meant I didn't get much time to get this ready, so we're going to open Season 2 with this episode instead! Future episodes will continue at roughly every 10 days, as with season one. In this episode, Megan (alias VeniVidiDrinki), James, our friend Ruben, and I drink a Henri Marchant Cold Duck that dates back at least to the early 1970s. Why? Because it was there. More seriously, VeniVidi found this bottle at an estate sale somewhere in Illinois, and had it sitting around... and so we decided to drink it. For myself, this is probably the second or third oldest bottle I've had in my life, but for the others, it was their oldest bottle; in fact, this bottle was older than every one of us excepting possibly James. Old wine is fascinating, often lauded, but sometimes misses the mark. But we decided to try this one anyway and record it for shiggles. What is Cold Duck, anyway? Well, it so happens that Cold Duck is pretty much a uniquely American innovation in the wine world. The wine style was invented by one Harold Borgman, the owner of Pontchartrain Wine Cellars in Detroit, Michigan in 1937. This inaugural Cold Duck vintage was made at the Ponchartrain Wine Cellars by simultaneously pouring Champagne and sparkling burgundy into a hollow stem wine glass. However, this recipe was based on a German legend that involved Prince Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony ordering the mixing of all the dregs of unfinished wine bottles in his cellar with Champagne. The wine produced by Borgman was at first given the name Kaltes Ende ("cold end" in German), until it was altered to the similar-sounding term Kalte Ente meaning "cold duck". It was this translation of the second name that took root for this particular wine style, and many other American wineries, particularly in California and New York, followed in the wake of Pontchartrain. Today, you can still find bottles of Cold Duck in most grocery stores, as a "low-end" wine (see: Frasier, Season 4, Episode 9), but for the time it was a revolution that allowed most Americans who would never have been able to afford high-end sparkling wines from France to get their first experience with bubbly. Of note: we dated this bottle based on a particularly awkwardly hilarious commercial we found on YouTube; the audio of which is featured in the podcast, but the video is linked below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLVgsv17RKc

Megann Eichner emailed: "Hi Marc, I was able to get all of the music easily and with no problems! I have not had the chance to listen to all of it yet, but I can’t wait! I love your podcast by the way! It is so unique, and the music is great! Thank you!" Justin Lowmaster emailed a photo: "Packing boxes while listening to episode 371."

Pontchartrain and Mikey Woo Planet Funk Ep 184
2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Sir Mix-A-Lot's monster hit "Baby Got Back." (I know, right?!) Rachel asks the rapper/producer about his iconic tribute to tush, what the song really means, and why it was good getting banned from MTV. OH, BUT THE FOOD! YLM goes down to Louisiana to uncover the difference between Cajun and Creole (cuisine and culture) from Chef & TV host John Folse, author of The Encyclopedia of Cajun & Creole Cuisine, and Louisiana Eats' Poppy Tooker. Rachel also talks to Georgea Pappas, daughter of the founder of Pappadeux: the home of Texas Redfish Ponchartrain and a favorite of Hip Hop's finest.
Alone, Pontchartrain inspected the black case. It was secured with not one but two sets of wax seals imprinted with La Reynie's official insignia. Pontchartrain cracked open the brittle seals with a small knife and inserted the key into the lock... Removing one large stack of pages, he placed the papers on the table and turned each gingerly. He saw names of France's highest nobility. Alongside them were scrawled the words "death," "poison," "murdered." -- Holly Tucker, City of Light, City of Poison I am so pleased to welcome my first true-crime writer -- all the more so because Holly Tucker brings her true crime tales to life from the pages of history. The central character of her latest book, City of Light, City of Poison is Nicolas de La Reynie, the first police chief of Paris, and the man who quite literally created the City of Light. City of Light, City of Poison gives us an insider's look into The Affair of the Poisons, the scandal which rocked the Sun King's court. Holly's book opens with King Louis XIV himself destroying what he thought were the only records of the investigation. Lucky for us, Louis was mistaken -- and Holly was tenacious. Holly is Editor-in-Chief of the marvelous website, Wonders & Marvels: A Community for Curious Minds Who Love History, Its Odd Stories, and Good Reads. My word, who doesn't? You can also keep tabs on her through her own author website, Holly-Tucker.com. In our interview, she gives a shout-out to authors Laura Hillenbrand and Erik Larson, and I would be failing in my duty to you not to recommend Holly's other foray into historical true crime, Blood Work, the research for which led her to Nicolas de La Reynie. As this goes live, it is Holly's launch day for City of Light, City of Poison. You can run over and like her on Facebook right here. While you're at it, go like Destination Mystery on Facebook as well. Meanwhile, though, you can enjoy this interview. If you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Au revoir! -- Laura Transcript of Interview with Holly Tucker Laura Brennan: A professor of French History at Vanderbilt University, Holly Tucker writes extensively on true crime in early Europe. She has tackled murder and mayhem during the Scientific Revolution in her award-winning book, Blood Work, as well as childbirth and fairy tales in Pregnant Fictions. Her most recent book, City of Light, City of Poison, follows the first police chief of Paris as he works to root out organized crime and foil a cabal of poisoners, witches and unholy priests. Holly, thank you for joining me. Holly Tucker: Thanks for having me. LB: So, normally, in my interviews, I start by chatting about you and how you got into this, but I cannot wait to delve into this book with you. So let us start with City of Light, City of Poison. For someone who hasn't picked it up yet, what's the one thing they need to know in order to understand our conversation? HT: That it's a true crime mystery. It might read like fiction, but it's absolutely true. LB: When you say it might read like fiction, it does. It reads like a fast-paced novel where you're never sure who you should be rooting for. HT: There are so many different characters in this story as I researched it, it was really hard for me to try to figure out who exactly was up to no good and who is innocent. And I think that the biggest challenge in writing this book, and then also I hope to convey to readers, the pleasure of trying to solve the mystery and the puzzle themselves. LB: Your central character, although he was a real person, that first police chief of Paris, Nicolas de La Reynie. Because Paris up to that point didn't really have what we think of today as a police force. HT: No, it didn't. In fact I think it's safe to say it was considered to be the crime capital of the world. And the streets were foul and dirty, dangerous and most of the policing was done, if you could call it policing,

“This is what edits are supposed to sound like.” ~Juno Records In 2014 after nearly a decade of collecting records, and playing various roles in the dance music scene of Detroit and West Michigan, the Pontchartrain moniker was born. What began as tools for his own personal dancefloor use turned into head-turning release after release of his vision for edits of forgotten classics and sample-heavy house cuts. In a short couple of years, his release catalog has gained support from various well respected artists, garnered him international bookings and acclaim, and earned him the A&R position for Sleazy McQueen’s highly sought after Whiskey Disco imprint. The sounds he chooses, reflect the obvious influences from Detroit’s past, with a new face and ideology that continues to entertain and surprise. Paxahau Radio Episode 008 - @pontchartrain

Hosted & Edited by Chen YinnRecorded live at Waiting Room 16.07.08Mixed by PonchartrainPonchartrainThe underground music community is known for pushing limits, setting trends, and influencing people and art far beyond its initial reach. Detroit native and resident Pontchartrain has been fortunate enough to realize this and use it in developing his project from a unique vantage point, resulting in one of the most wide-ranging, yet refined sounds in the new generation of underground DJs. At a glance it's no mystery that the music and style of the past form the basis for his eclectic sets. But it's how they are pieced together that makes his sound stand out. Pontchartrain takes the greatest things about all forms of independent and underground dance music across the past four decades and combines them together with the meticulous attention to detail of someone who not only loves the craft, but loves learning, researching, and doing it right. His sets are a collection of sounds that pushed boundaries throughout the years, and presented in a way that makes new audiences discover them for the first time, and old audiences rediscover them in brand new ways. For about 10 years, Pontchartrain simply prided himself in his ability to learn and perfect, but in the last two years alone, his sets and productions have been catapulted by the recent rise in the resurgence of vinyl and a refocused attention directed at classic dance music. In addition to serving as A&R for the powerhouse edits label, Whiskey Disco, Pontchartrain has releases on Kolour Ltd, Editorial, Masterworks Music, Hot Digits and more.Recently, he and Whiskey Disco boss, Sleazy McQueen's newly formed label Lovedancing, earned him much acclamation with his initial Burnin' EP, which has already been repressed. He is currently taking bookings worldwide and regularly tours North and South America, with plans for an Asian and European tour starting in early 2016.Booking: dustin@pontchartrain.usWeb: www.pontchartrain.usFacebook: facebook.com/pontchartrainmusicSoundcloud: soundcloud.com/pontchartrainBooking: dustin@pontchartrain.usWeb: www.pontchartrain.usFacebook: facebook.com/pontchartrainmusicSoundcloud: soundcloud.com/pontchartrain

Cookie-Dough Guest Mix 27 with Fingerman Welcome to the Cookie-Dough Guest mix where we invite some of favourite DJ / Producers to answer a few questions and dig deep into their collections and put together a mix of their favourite records. For this episode we have invited Fingerman (aka Gregg Holmes) to spin some of the records that have influenced him over the years. The past two years have seen many releases on a variety of top Disco labels such as Midnight Riot, Get Down Edits, Discodat and Chopshop many of which have received high praise and number one positions at Juno Records and Juno Download. He has also recently branched out opening his own label Hot Digits Music, a Brighton based label that focuses on up & coming producers and well established disco stalwarts alike with the first few releases featuring work from Fingerman himself, Austrailian trailblazer DR Packer, Detroit funky man Pontchartrain and P-Funk rump shaker Tonbe. At Cookie-Dough HQ we are buzzin’ Fingerman has taken the time out of his busy schedule to put together this special mix for us. Nice one G! Track list: Duff Disco - Eagle Flight "Perfect set opener. I rarely go to a gig and not have a cut by Duff. Solid Edit work." Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (A Mix Of Two Halves) "Andy Weatherall on the mix. Beautiful retro remix" Stone Roses - Waterfall (Justin Robertson Remix) "Huge Roses fan. This remix is lush. Reminds me of my early indie clubbing years" The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (Pal Joey 'Cumulo Nimbus' Remix) "The Orb were responsible for my first electronic music experiences. Timeless music" Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (Fingerman's Edit Of The Frankie Knuckles Mixes) "Utterly brilliant remix of an 80's classic. Frankie did them proud here" A&R Edits - Never Survive (Fingerman's Crazy Edit) "One of my personal favourite edits… Endorsed by Greg Wilson. Bless him!" Happy Mondays - Loose Fit (Fingerman's Up Til Late Edit) "Released on Editors Kuts last year. Always loved this edit… 8. Shockingly not played it out yet!" David Bowie - Golden Years (The Reflex Revision) "Love Bowie. The Reflex does what he does best here" Mercury Rev - Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp (The Chemical Brothers Mix) "Wonderful track. Very Chems. Very Balearic. Very now" M - Pop Musik (Todd Terje Remix) "Had to include one Terje tune. This is such a fun record!" Bjork - Human Behaviour (Underworld Mix 1) "Also HAD to include one Underworld track. This had all the trademark early Underworld vibes. Ace remix. The Dub was only on vinyl… which is also amazing" Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Groove Motion Edit) "One hell of a vocal. Groove Motion are a great couple of chaps who make some very useful edits" Metro Area - Dance Reaction (Fingerman Edit) "My second favourite Metro track after Caught Up. A seminal debut album" Whirlpool Productions - From Disco 2 Disco (Original Mix) "Originally got this on the back of the LRD remix that did the rounds back in the day. The Original version is the only one for me due to its off kilter production and hilarious vocal drops. Still sounds great today" Groove Armada - Love Sweet Sound (Extended Original Mix) "Taken from on of their underrated albums this is. Such a great song" Bryan Ferry - Don't Stop The Dance (Greg Wilson & Derek Kaye Remix) "Love Derek & Greg's productions. One of my fave end of session tunes" Fleetwood Mac - Family Man (Flight Facilities Edit) "Had the fortune of seeing The Mac live this year. What an experience that was! So tight for a band knocking on. I could have picked many Mac tunes but this edit is top dollar" Prefab Sprout - Bonny (Leo Zero Edit) "One of my all time favourite edits. The last couple of minutes are to die for!" Q&A What was the first record you bought that made you realize that you wanted to be a DJ / Producer? Tough question!
