Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Dec. 30 Plan a getaway to the charming mountain town of Buckhannon. A baker tries out Jennifer Garner's Cloud Cookies recipe--yum! And celebrate the holidays with the McElroy Family's Candlenights Spectacular…on today's daily304. #1 – From MY BUCKHANNON – Nestled amongst the rolling hills of central West Virginia, Upshur County is the home of delicious cuisine, unique small businesses and a heart-warming, hometown feel that harkens back to the slower-paced era of days gone by. Thousands of welcoming residents help showcase the unique quirks that make their home among the hills something worth remembering. Plan a visit to the Pringle Tree, which marks the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies in then-Virginia. Here in 1764, brothers Samuel and John Pringle lived in a hollowed Sycamore tree and eventually founded a permanent settlement with other emigrants. Stroll the walking path at the West Virginia Wildlife Center, which features native wildlife in their natural habitat as well as a gift shop and picnic area. Grab a bite to eat at The Donut Spot, then shop the town's quaint Main Street – full of boutiques, gift shops, fresh coffee, restaurants and more. Especially when it's courtesy of the endearing and beloved West Virginia expat Jennifer Garner, as posted on her Instagram. The well-known actress was making a batch of Sarabeth's Cloud Cookies, and while she made the process look seamless, she ended up with rather flat, brown cookies at the end. Turns out she skimped on using the superfine sugar that the recipe calls for. By the end of the video when she made her second attempt, you can tell that the superfine sugar made all the difference for this particular chocolate chip cookie. Want to know how to make these tasty cookies for yourself? Get the recipe at thekitchn.com. i learned about the concept of ‘worlding' from Vanessa Andreotti's Hospicing Modernity and I danced in the rain TRANSCRIPTION OF EPISODE (bell and breath) (raindrops from https://simplesoundscapes.ca/e105-thunder/) I learned about the concept of ‘worlding' from page 184 of Vanessa Andreotti's Hospicing Modernity. Andreotti explains that : Worlding stories are not focused on the aesthetic perfection of form but rather on the integration of form and movement. Now this integration of form and movement made me think of that magical period when rain begins to fall and dryness is transformed into wetness is quite magical. Listen carefully. Andreotti goes on to say that : Worlding stories are not supposed to be ‘thought about' but rather thought, felt, and danced with and through… Andreotti goes on further to explain that : They play with the ambivalence and dynamic force of meaning. In this sense, meaning will change as a worlding story lands deeper into the body, a story will have many layers of changing meaning, and some layers will only reveal themselves years after the story arrives. Worlding stories invite us to experiment with a different relationship between language and reality. The stories do not require anyone to believe in anything; rather they invite you to believe with them. The stories do not require anyone to believe in anything; rather they invite you to believe with them. Our conversation today with Tammy Sharpe, Executive Director of the Phoenix Project gave us details about the organization and how/why it was formed as well as the services and programs they offer to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Tammy gave us a quick history lesson and explained how Phoenix Project was formed to serve those in the community after Harmony House closed in October 2013. We talked about the services and programs they offer for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Those include crisis intervention like operating a 24/7 hotline (540-635-2300), court advocacy, support groups for both adults and children, as well as many educational programs. She gave examples of various situations that victims may find themselves in and talked about the long-term trauma that follows. We discussed the impact exposure to abuse has on children in the household and the different services they offer to support and educate families. Tammy also told us about an upcoming virtual event: Women's Wellness Workshop in partnership with Front Royal Women's Resource Center that will happen via Zoom on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 9am - 12pm. Musician George Winters has performed for audiences for over 50 years across America. The Michigan native is well-known in music venues in southeastern Michigan for his fabulous keyboard skills, especially on a Hammond organ. George plays the keyboard, guitar, and harmonica and also sings. This podcast includes a conversation with George Winters about his long career and several unreleased tracks that include his distinctive mellow jazz and upbeat popular music. Winters shares his story about how his music career started and grew in and around Flint and Detroit, Michigan. In this podcast interview, he talks about how the troubles of the automobile industry affected the life of local musicians in Michigan. The son of a Hammond B3 organ salesman, George got his musical start very early in life in Flushing, Michigan. He entertained the audience during local theater intermission as a child by playing the organ.George shares stories about his interactions with former Detroit Tiger star pitcher Dennis McClain, who also was an organist. Winters tells of his amusing experience delivering a Hammond B3 organ to the home of Mark Farner of the Rock Band Grand Funk Railroad. In recent years he has toured the country in clubs that host dueling pianos. George has produced five compact disc recordings. The first, entitled "The Seed" was completed in 1994 and was recorded in less than two hours. "The Seed" was picked up by major retailers in Michigan, including Harmony House, prompting some local success. George's second effort, "Rhythm," released in 1998, comprises mostly original music with instrumentation including the Hammond B3, drums, bass, guitar, and piano. His love of the dueling pianos concept also began in 1998 at JD's Key Club in Pontiac, MI, and continues to this day. You can see George at select Dueling Pianos clubs - click on "show dates" on his web page for a complete schedule. With the release of his fifth CD, "Back to the B3" George hopes to put his music into more hands than ever, using the internet medium to deliver his creations. "Back to the B3" will be available soon from online retailers such as iTunes, or you can order directly from this website.

It's all about Mohammed Ali Road, Bombay, Alibaug, Church Gate, Sheikh Abdullah Salem, Raja yoga and Saatvik aahaar in this episode of Sadaaqa. The Al Arfaj family from Kuwait lived a happy life in a penthouse on Mohammed Ali Road in Bombay for many years before shifting to Colaba. The Al Arfaj patriarch started off as a pearl merchant before he diversified his business. His eldest daughter Noura Al Arfaj studied Hindi and Urdu at the Parsi run Anjuman Islamic High School. The summer holidays were great fun spent in the cool climes of Panchgani, Matheran and Deolali. The children's maternal grandfather lived in Alibaug, and the Al Arfaj family spent a lot of time in this green paradise. Noura and Sheikha's maternal grandmother Salma Bawazir, participated in the political movement with Gandhiji after he returned from South Africa. Their maternal uncle Rashid, a Bollywood film producer was married to Dilip Kumar's niece. The Kuwaiti family conversed in Hindi and Urdu, the womenfolk wore sarees and their Arabic dress. The children studied Arabic in a special school opened by Sheikh Abdullah Salem at Church Gate. In the 1960s, the family shifted to Kuwait when the Emir of Kuwait asked his people to return and rebuild the country. The family relocated but they kept alive their connections and love for India. Sheikha, who was born in Kuwait was attracted by India's spiritual wealth. She went on to cofound Harmony House, a centre for meditation and Raja Yoga in Kuwait. She also established Ginger, one of the first vegan restaurants in Kuwait based on India's ancient philosophy of Satvik Aahaar. Here in this episode, the Al Arfaj sisters speak to Chaitali B Roy share their memories and speak of ongoing connections. This week, we revisit a chat from last year, featuring Mac DeMarco and Dayglow's Sloan Struble. The second Dayglow album, Harmony House, comes out May 21. Check it out! ------------------- On this week’s show, a young gun picks a veteran’s brain. A youngish veteran, admittedly — Mac DeMarco’s only 30, but compared to 21 year old Spotify-wunderkind Sloan Struble, aka Dayglow, he’s already spent a lifetime in the music industry trenches. The two take in a lot in this conversation. We hear Mac’s origin story, and get a nice overview of his career. We get insight into what it’s like finding fast fame online in 2020, and the two dissect the term “DIY” and the changing definition of “indie.” Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer This week’s talk was originally produced by Mark Yoshizumi and Elia Einhorn. Founder of Harmony House, Wendy Brofman has over 25 years of experience working in healthcare, including private duty nursing and home care capacities. As a breast cancer survivor, Wendy started on her journey to reinvent herself knowing that she didn’t want to work for anyone else ever again. Coming across a home one day, Wendy purchased the house and opened up her own respite care center for seniors--Harmony House. Harmony House provides temporary care for seniors and gives primary caregivers an opportunity to refresh and reset. Resembling a B&B for seniors, Harmony House is a four-bedroom home that provides professional care for seniors in a relaxed and warm environment. Navigating the ins and outs of being a boss and business owner, Wendy is still learning how to care for the needs of her patients and staff. Relating entrepreneurship as being a “balancing act”, Wendy is continually growing in her skills as a professional and wearing many hats to meet the needs of her patients, their families, and her team. From PRIs, constant caregiving, and balancing her personal life, Wendy mentions the moving pieces of entrepreneurship but also gives listeners hope in being fearless in their business ventures to create successful and fulfilling businesses. In this episode, we talk more about what Springfield, Missouri is doing to improve response to sexual assault. We hear more from Lisa Farmer from the Harmony House about how that organization works to help various segments of the Springfield community. Then we look at what other cities are doing and speak with Janine D’Anniballe, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and a nationally recognized expert in sexual assault and traumatic stress, and treatment for survivors who works with MESA (Moving to End Sexual Assault) serving Boulder County, Colorado. Most of our communities do have amazing individuals to help victims, and especially here in Springfield, Missouri. That means we have the tools/people to fix this systemic problem. Building a strong support system for children is vital. We also talk with a very important part of this support system, a parent of a young lady who was raped at a party. This mom talks about how hard it was to hear about what her daughter went through and sets a wonderful example for parental response. Please review and rate this podcast. In episode 25, we talk to Ma Josephine, who was referred to us by TUHF because of her remarkable story of tenacity and just all round awesomeness. Ma Josephine is a domestic worker, who came to Johannesburg from the North West province of South Africa. She came to Joburg, for the same reason most people do - looking for a better life. Along the way she started to see how so many young kids would come to the city to study and would struggle to find accommodation. This sparked her interest in student accommodation and how to solve the housing shortage in this market. Through a series of events she was introduced to the owners of an inner city building, Harmony House, and later given the opportunity to buy the building in 2000. She had no money to buy the building and she couldn't get a bank loan but she remembered that 2 years ago (in 1998) she had been told about TUHF. She went to TUHF and was a granted a loan, but couldn't take up residency in the property for 8 years, because the building had squatters living in it. She finally took full occupancy of the building in February 2009, got more funding from TUHF and renovated the building to accommodate 124 tertiary students. The building got instant accreditation from NSFAS and was one of the first student accommodations in Doornfontein. Today Ma Josephine's building cashflows at R409, 000 per month and is still being extended to fit an extra 60 units. Hers is a story that makes all of us believe in our dreams and reminds us of our own power. Click play and allow yourself to be inspired and to keep dreaming bigger.
