This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with Gary Graff, editor of "501 ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF THE '80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide"! In this conversation, we talk about some of the major musical trends of the ‘80s and how Gary felt about them in his early days as a music journalist. And since we had both recently seen Devo on their current tour, Gary shares his review of that show. From there, we dive in on some Classic Rock selections that he wrote the reviews for, specifically albums from Genesis, Steve Winwood, Toto, Night Ranger, Alice Cooper, among others. We also discuss why so many ‘60s artists had comebacks in the ‘80s, and of course I had to ask him about what Bob Seger was up to in that era. Writer Gary Graff returns to discuss the release of the 501 Essential Albums of the 80s. When he was on a few months ago to discuss the 90s version, we explored the process for creating the list, who contributed, and how they decided what made it and what didn't. This time we go straight to the fun stuff - what was missing! It makes for a friendly, but impassioned debate, which is exactly the point of books like this. Gary Graff has done it again. With a cadre of writers, Gary pulled together a list of 501 albums that he feels are the most indicative of the 1980s. (We talked with Gary before about his list of albums of the 90s.) And, while we don't get as heated as we did then, there is still some lively debate to go around- and that's the point.501 Essential Albums of the '80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide is available right now wherever you get your books.
Comedian Brian Blackmore was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning, handling the Top 10 1980's fashion trends. (0:00) AJ is back in the studio! After a few days off for treatment, AJ explained why the doctors consider him to be a medical marvel, and how easy it is to lose your car in a parking garage. (15:28) The Tribe was calling in to share their stories of being attacked by bees, which included some hilarious recreation commentary from AJ. (23:51) It took no time at all for Chaz and Gary Graff to start arguing over the essential albums of the 1980's. Gary wrote the book on the 501 most essential albums, and the only thing he and Chaz agreed on is the exclusion of Don Johnson's "Heartbeat." (32:01)
