Today I had the pleasure of meeting the new director for the ICHS Pioneers Museum Mrs Caitlin Chavez. A lot of us from the Imperial Valley might have seen the Pioneers Museum on our way to IVC or whenever we take Aten road but we ask ourselves, "I wonder what's inside?" And let me tell you there's a lot of amazing displays showcasing animals from our area to actual buildings that are part of the Imperial Valley's history. Director Chavez and her small staff do an amazing job at preserving and maintaining ICHS Pioneers Museum and I really hope that the next time you are in the area you stop by and learn more about what's inside and even outside. July 31, 1871, the story of the City of Colorado Springs began. A small group of people gathered near what is today the southeast corner of Cascade and Pikes Peak Avenue for a founding ceremony. Over the past 150 years, the city grew and developed around that very spot where the first stake was drive. As we venture to and around the three historic downtown parks—Acacia, Antlers and Alamo—we’ll explore stories of celebration, innovation and determination. This tour is drawn from the Museum’s newest exhibit, COS@150, which features 150 objects, illuminating 150 stories, and commemorating 150 years.

Controversy and Compromise in Colorado Pioneer Monuments In 1911, Denverites opposed plans for a Pioneer Monument featuring a Plains Indian warrior towering over white settlers. A century later, Colorado Springs residents rejected a conventional covered wagon monument in favor of a modern design celebrating cultural inclusivity.
