[Bhagavad Gita, Ch 5, Texts 1-6] Time stamps & topics: 5:41: There's certain terminology in the Gita that can best be understood if left in the original language. Renouncing work (sannyas) and work with devotion (karma-yoga). Arjuna is asking Krishna which is better, sannyas or yoga. 9:15: Krishna answers Arjuna's question, but doesn't stop there. He expands on the answer to get Arjuna to ponder the answer. By Krishna expanding on the answer and giving more details, Krishna is wanting us to use our intelligence to see how he came to this answer. 15:25: Krishna is incorporating cognitive and behavioral concepts. Merely having knowledge (cognitive) or only acting properly (behavioral) is not as desired as acting based upon transcendental knowledge. By deepening of this knowledge, your action starts to become more pure. Whatever you are learning should be mirrored by your actions. 29:54: Prabhupad's purport in Text 5, on sankhya and yoga - The real purpose of sankhya is to find the ultimate goal of life. An individual's actions must be in some relationship with the Supreme. Determining what to detach from (matter) and what to attach to (Krishna). 34:35: What makes "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" the #1 translation of the Bhagavad Gita. There are many great stories of the Eastern spiritual renaissance taking hold in the West. There's Richard Alpert to Ram Dass, Yogananda's revolution in Los Angeles, Swami Vivekananda bringing Vedanta to the States. And then there's the story of Srila Prabhuphad and the Hare Krishna movement. It's one of the most extraordinary stories of human manifestation in the 20th Century. Really. He arrived in America in 1965 at age 69 with $20, a type writer and a mantra. That's it. And in the front row for the entire phenomena was Shyamasundar Das who was "the Swami's" private secretary for seven years. His new book "Chasing Rhinos with The Swami" chronicles his life, times and adventures with him from 1967 until 1975. Our podcast talked a lot about the early days of the movement, how it took hold in the Haight Ashbury in the Summer of Love, what Krishna Consciousness is and a few amazingly intimate stories of life with A. C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI. No matter what you may think of the Hare Krishna movement, I urge you to put all that aside and listen with an open heart and mind. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did, I hung on every word! About Shyamasundar Das: I was born in the body of Samuel Speerstra, in Salem, Oregon in May,1942. From early childhood I thrived on adventure and risk. After graduating from Reed College in 1965, I met Bhaktivedanta Swami in San Francisco in January 1967, and immediately became his disciple Shyamasundar Das. The Swami wed me to my girlfriend Melanie (Malati Devi Dasi) in a smoke-filled storefront in Haight-Ashbury we called the Radha-Krishna Temple. In 1968, to please Swamiji, I traveled with five chosen devotees to London. There, we witnessed firsthand Krishna's magic display; we befriended the Beatles and, courtesy of Apple Records, spread Hare Krishna Mantra around the world. In October 1970, the Swami took twenty of his Western disciples to India, and together-as Prabhupad and his Dancing White Elephants--we barnstormed the country. In June 1971, Prabhupad accepted me as his Personal Secretary. I was by Prabhupad's side, day and night, in Europe, USA, Africa, Asia, Australia-even behind Brezhnev's Iron Curtain. I never saw him sleep, I never saw him make an error of any kind. How did I get this lucky, to observe close-up the life of the Perfect Person? Srila Prabhupad, the Magic Man himself! Satsang With Vraja Kishor If you are making people mad, and you aren't breaking yama and niyama, you're doing something right. Sitaram Das and Vraja Kishor talk about how they first got introduced to the Bhagavad Gita, and what it would be like to be friends with Krishna, and their personal relationships with god. Sitaram Das compares his hippie leanings to Vraja's Punk Sensibilities. They discuss how controversies can motivate people to open their minds, and learn new things in new ways. Sitaram Das is curious about the different ways that the term Guru is used, and so they talk about that for a while as well. Vraja's Astrology Website: http://www.vicdicara.com/ Vraja's Books and Online Class Website: http://vrajakishor.com/ I dug around and found a scan of the Zine that we talked about, where the coupon was filled out: http://publiccollectors.tumblr.com/post/25028601289/razorsedge
Nihal Kajjam remembers the precise moment when he encountered the Hare Krishnas in New York. He was wearing jeans and a black Megadeth t-shirt and was walking near the statue of Gandhi, in Union Square. And then he heard a small group of people dressed in saris and traditional robes, chanting — and it captivated him. Kajjam grew up in a religious, Krishna-worshipping family in India, but had since personally "dwindled." He ate meat, grew a little too cocky about his jumpshot, fell hard for a girl who broke his heart. Watching the Hare Krishnas chanting, though, inspired him, and earlier this year he left his NYU dorm and moved into the Hare Krishna ashram in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He's become a vegetarian and he's celibate. The Hare Krishnas, he said, have given him a sense of purpose and a community. "If you give up the senses for the right reason, you get a higher taste. And that higher taste is tasty, bro. It’s really good. It’s awesome! Now I have meaning to my life," Kajjam said. Kajjam is just one of those drawn to the new Hare Krishnas, who are making a comeback in New York. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness was founded in the East Village in 1965 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, known as Prabhupad. Prabhupad became one of the central figures of the counterculture, and for a while, the Hare Krishna chant was everywhere — on the streets, in pop music, and on TV. But then the religious group seemed to vanish. Steven Gelberg, who joined the Hare Krishnas in 1970 and left in the 80s, said that the Krishnas had become aggressive — and dishonest. He recalled a Krishna technique he dubbed The Changeup: First, a Krishna would give someone a book. Then (seemingly on second-thought), he or she would ask for a small donation, and convince the mark to hand over a $20 with the promise of change. But then the Krishna would never give the change back. "And so they put people in the position that they had to be almost rude and say, 'No, give me more money back. I'm gonna give you $5, I want $15 back.' So it became a very manipulative thing, and that really pervaded the organization," Gelberg said. Various Hare Krishna scandals followed, and people left the fold or moved away. Some of the especially devout, like Abhiram, born John Sims, moved to India and chanted there. Then Occupy Wall Street happened in 2011. Some Krishnas led the Occupiers in chanting and it sparked a rebirth. "We decided we should bring the Hare Krishna mantra back to the streets of NYC. Just as Occupy Wall Street have gone to the streets," said Abhiram, who now presides over the Bed-Stuy ashram. "No social change ever in history comes from the intellectuals, comes from the leadership, comes from the vested interests. Ever. Never. It always comes from the bottom. It always comes from the street. And so we're taking it to the streets." With the Hare Krishna revival came a new business plan. Instead of conning strangers out of their cash, the Krishnas make organic, gluten-free, vegan, dark chocolate chip oatmeal raisin cookies. They're being sold for $3.50 each at The Bean chain and other fine coffeeshops. Freshly-baked cookies receiving Krishna's blessings (Hare Krishnas) For Kajjam, the sense of belonging he's found with his fellow Krishnas has been invaluable. "All these guys, I feel like taking their legs and putting them on my head," he said. "Because if it wasn’t for their mercy, I’d be so lost."
