What happens when an ancient devotional practice like Kirtan moves from intimate spaces to concert halls and huge audiences? In this episode of For Soul's Sake, Radhika Das, Stine, and Nama explore the balance between Kirtan, performance, devotion, and accessibility. Radhika reflects on his journey from small gatherings to thousands of people, and whether Kirtan can remain a sincere offering to Krishna while being shared on a larger scale. They discuss the importance of intention, humility, music, and consciousness, the relationship between Kirtan and Japa, and what it means to enter a Kirtan space not simply to attend, but to serve.3:12 — Taking an ancient practice to the stage4:46 — The power of intimate Kirtan9:42 — Making Kirtan accessible to a wider audience13:37 — Performance vs. devotion23:21 — Are we attending Kirtan or participating and serving?29:42 — Kirtan and Japa41:29 — Humility and the foundation of chanting46:53 — Making Kirtan accessible without losing its essence50:54 — Bonus conversationsProduced by: Sunni Sharma and Viraj Limbachia Filmed by: Filmwork Studios Edited by: Hannah BrownWant to connect further?Instagram: www.instagram.com/radhika_dasa/Facebook: www.facebook.com/radhikadasmusicYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/RadhikaDasWebsite: www.radhikadas.comPatreon: www.patreon.com/radhikadasKomi: https://radhikadas.komi.io/

Enjoy this descent into the heartspace where Krishna Das connects us to our true nature of pure awareness and unity with God. This week on Pilgrim Heart, Krishna Das explores:Different translations of the Ramayana Bhakti and repetition of the name as one of the easiest paths to follow Descending deeply into the mind and heartHow Maharaj-ji instructed Krishna Das to wear red Union with god alongside worldly enjoymentsRemembering to orient ourselves to our true nature Watching the breath, separating breathing from awareness of breathing “The eye receives information from the outside world. But, the eye has no consciousness—it's a physical thing. What has consciousness is our true nature, which is aware of all the sense input that comes in. Who we truly are underneath all our thoughts, emotions, objects of experience, we are that awareness.” –Krishna DasAbout Krishna Das:Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Grammy nominee Krishna Das has been called yoga's “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time. His album ‘Live Ananda' (released January 2012) was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age album category.KD spent the late '60s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass' own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji. Krishna Das now travels the world sharing his kirtan practice and wonderful stories of his life, of Maharaji-ji, of his life on the Path and discusses bringing chanting into our lives through retreats and workshops. To date, KD has released 15 well-received albums, most recently Trust in the Heart released in October 2017.MORE INFORMATION and OFFERINGS VISIT: https://krishnadas.com/ KRISHNA DAS ON SOCIAL: FACEBOOK: facebook.com/KrishnaDasMusic INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/krishnadasmusic YOUTUBE: / krishnadasmusic X: @krishnadas #KrishnaDasSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

E206 - Jahnavi Harrison: Living a Life of Devotion & Embracing Your Voice

Know Thyself

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2026 114:27

Jahnavi Harrison is a Grammy-nominated artist, musician, and practitioner of Bhakti Yoga who has spent her life exploring sound as a path to the divine. Raised at Bhaktivedanta Manor in England, she grew up inside one of the world's most dedicated devotional communities, and in this conversation we trace how that formation shaped her relationship with voice, identity, approval, and what it means to offer your life as a prayer. What We Dive Into:1. Most of us were told at some point to be quiet, to sound better, or to wait until we were good enough. That conditioning runs deep. Reclaiming the voice, whether through kirtan, song, or simply speaking truthfully, is one of the most direct paths back to a self that stopped performing and started expressing.2. Bhakti is not a feeling you arrive at and maintain. It is a daily offering, something you return to moment by moment, especially when you have drifted. Jahnavi's framing is simple: make space for prayer in whatever form feels alive to you, and that space will become a source of nourishment that compounds over time.3. The desire to be accepted can masquerade as discernment, as wisdom, even as calling. This sacred composition by Guru Arjan Dev Ji (in Raag Jaitsri) delivers a profound message on how to find true mental peace, spiritual purification, and liberation from worldly anxieties. Here is a structured summary of the key spiritual lessons from this passage:1. The Limitation of Worldly Comforts vs. The Power of NaamThe Illusion of Earthly Relief: Guru Ji explains that physical or worldly "coolants"—such as applying soothing sandalwood paste, basking in the cool moonlight, or experiencing the cold season—are entirely powerless when it comes to extinguishing the inner fire (anxiety, ego, and desire) of the human mind. The Ultimate Remedy: True, lasting inner peace and coolness of the soul can only be achieved by meditating on and chanting the Divine Name (Naam).2. The Sanctuary of the Saints (Sangat)Purification through Sangat: Associating with enlightened souls (Saints) purifies one's character and mind. The Ultimate Support: The Merciful Lord protects those who make singing His praises (Kirtan) the central anchor of their lives.A Rare Blessing: Finding the company of such holy people is not an accident; it is obtained only through great destiny and good deeds (high spiritual merit).3. Fearlessness and Inexhaustible WealthEradicating Fear: By listening to the glorious virtues of the Creator, the mind is stripped of all worldly fears, making the practitioner entirely fearless. The True Wealth: Gathering the wealth of the "Naam" is the only investment that never diminishes or suffers a loss.Constant Remembrance: The ultimate spiritual lifestyle is to remain connected to the Divine twenty-four hours a day (all eight pahars), constantly meditating on and listening to His praises. The Essence: Material comforts cannot cure the mind's restlessness. True peace, fearlessness, and spiritual wealth are found by seeking the shelter of the Divine, meditating on His Name, and staying in the company of the saintly.

In vielen spirituellen Traditionen gilt Krishna als Symbol für Liebe, Mitgefühl und das göttliche Spiel des Lebens. Das Singen seines Namens soll das Herz öffnen und die Verbindung zu innerer Freude stärken. This morning, just after the program at the Rādhā Govinda Mandir, I took a walk down Nevin Street and turned the corner to the CVS. As I was waiting for Nirākulā Devī Dāsī, my wife—who had some items to purchase—I was chanting outside. I saw a father and son come out; his little boy was probably six, and his face was puckered, and he was crying. His father said to him, "Tell me in words, why you're crying. What's the matter?" But he could only cry. I walked into the store to see, was there something that he wanted or needed in there? I couldn't see anything. What's more, most things were locked up—even the toothpaste, razor blades, anything of significant value was locked behind glass—and I started thinking, "No wonder he's crying." And then I thought, "This is us here in this world; everything we want, that we desire, is locked up." You have to work hard to get anything in this world. The one thing that is free, we don't ask for: it is God's grace. It falleth from the heavens like rain, sun-strained. It comes to everyone, but we're looking for many things that are not worthy of looking for. They're beneath our dignity as souls—the things we seek in this world. So, we have an opportunity to take what's been given to us for free, which gives the highest reward, and it only requires a sincere heart to sing the names of Kṛṣṇa and call out. The mantra is written in a form which allows us to simply call out. We don't need to know any Sanskrit; we just need to have a heart which is yearning to reconnect to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And here's a tune that we do sing when we're in Vṛndāvana and Govardhana Hill, where the devotees naturally love Kṛṣṇa—and at Govardhana Hill every day, they walk around and think of Kṛṣṇa and all those pastimes there in Vṛndāvana. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://vaisesikadasayatra.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #kirtan #spiritualmusic #mantramusic #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Kirtan was a practice that touched her deeply, and as a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba, she often participated in kirtan gatherings with fellow devotees, as well as in other ashrams and spiritual communities. For years she held kirtan in her home, and for the past dozen years or so, she has led kirtan formally in yoga studios, spiritual centers, and retreat settings. She has taught workshops and led kirtan on numerous retreats and in satsang with Ram Dass and other spiritual teachers in the U.S. and abroad.About Dreaming Bear: Dreaming Bear is a master word-smith delivering his fervent message with extraordinary verbal dexterity and relevance. He's a nomadic bard, a hip mystic and modern-language Sufic style philosopher-poet. If you'd like to experience a living combination of Spaulding Gray, Rumi, Jack Kerouac, Robin Williams, Shel Silverstein, Michael Talbot and Thich Nhat Hanh, you owe it to yourself to see Dreaming Bear. The foundation for Dreaming Bear's work as a transformational epic orator and poetic storyteller is deeply attuned to the natural world. His work as a university teacher/researcher was further defined by years spent living 'off the grid'. While in a deep communion with what the Hawaiians call the a'ina, or life force of the land, he began to take his artistry to a new level and developed many of the works that have proven to be inspiring to so many. What if the pain you've been trying to escape is actually the fuel you've been looking for? Recording artist Ben Barbic walked away from alcohol, nicotine, and blood pressure medications at 28 — and built a 15-year operating system for resilience. In this episode of Health Longevity Secrets, Robert Lufkin MD sits down with Ben Barbic — chart-climbing reggae and hip-hop recording artist, San Jose-based studio owner of Where Dreams Sail Studios, and author of the new memoir Rise and Climb: Finding Purpose Through Pain (Skyhorse Publishing / Simon & Schuster, October 15). They talk about the night his childhood home burned down, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that destroyed his family's second house, the teddy bear from his young son that triggered his sobriety pivot, the redwood-tree metaphor on the book cover, kirtan and chakra meditation as his entry point to a calmer mind, and how very small daily choices — a single five-minute habit — compound into a completely different life.CHAPTERS:00:00 — Introduction01:08 — Meet Ben Barbic: Recording Artist, Author, and Self-Builder02:00 — Childhood Trauma: When the House Burned Down03:00 — The 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and the Power of Rebuilding04:01 — Why Music Became His First Anchor as a Child05:02 — The 28th Birthday Pivot: Walking Away from Alcohol and Nicotine06:02 — The Subtraction-Then-Addition Method for Habit Change07:03 — Quitting Blood Pressure Medications and Treating the Root Cause09:04 — The Teddy Bear Moment: How His Son Triggered the Pivot12:04 — Why Tiny Five-Minute Habits Beat Big Resolutions14:05 — The First Three Habits He Added After Sobriety17:07 — Kirtan and Chakra Meditation: A Beginner's Path19:08 — Music, Memory, and the Brain's Storytelling Pathways24:09 — Writing a Memoir: The Hardest Part Is Vulnerability27:10 — Three Lessons for Self-Builders and High Performers30:11 — The Redwood Tree Metaphor on the Book Cover31:11 — Victim Mindset vs Agency: How to Reframe Adversity32:11 — Redefining Success: From Catching Up to Contributing36:12 — The Empty-Nest Pivot and the Next 5 Years38:13 — Final Thoughts: Pursue What Gives You PurposeKEY TAKEAWAYS:Subtract before you add — remove the drainers first, then layer in new habits.Hypertension is rarely solved by stacking more meds — change the upstream inputs and the numbers follow. The pivot moment usually has a single concrete trigger.Five minutes is enough — compounding does the rest.Kirtan plus chakra meditation is a friendly entry point for musicians.Redwood trees regrow tall around old burn scars.Define success by what you can contribute, not by who you can catch up to.LINKS & SOURCES:Rise and Climb: Finding Purpose Through Pain by Ben BarbicBen's music catalog1989 Loma Prieta earthquake background

Krishna Das reflects on Maharaj-ji's teaching that all names, forms, and journeys lead to the same truth. This week on Pilgrim Heart, Krishna Das talks about:Neem Karoli's teaching: Sub Ek (all one)Following the heart and our own individual path to GodA dream message that Krishna Das had from Maharaj-jiDeveloping communication skills for improved relationshipsHow being hard on ourselves makes it difficult to offer compassion to othersPutting effort into daily practice Living with ease and being with all experiences, good and bad“Maharaj-ji said one thing to us that was life-changing: sub ek. All one. Many names, many forms, many paths, all one. Different cultures call it by different names, they conceive of it differently, but underneath the thoughts it's all the same…What Jesus realized is the same thing that the yogis in India realized, that the Zen Buddhists, Sufis, Muslims realized. They don't get stuck in the difference of the forms. It's just names; they're all the names of the same thing which is our own true nature.” –Krishna DasAbout Krishna Das:Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Grammy nominee Krishna Das has been called yoga's “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time.
