In the 87th chapter of the Bhagavatam, 10th Canto, 'Prayers by the Personified Vedas,' Prabhupada comments in the Krsna book, in his commentary on that chapter, that the most munificent of all of the Lord's pastimes—the Lord has many pastimes—the best of all of them is His rescuing the living entities from the material world. Now, if you help Him in that, what is your position? You may think, "I'm nobody." Fine, but you are now because Prabhupada said, "Kindly help me." If you take it up and you feel, "I'm fortunate, why shouldn't I make other people fortunate? I have medicine. Why shouldn't I distribute the medicine?" Then this is the heart of the Saṅkīrtana movement, and this is high sādhana. tapyante loka-tāpena sādhavaḥ prāyaśo janāḥ paramārādhanaṁ tad dhi puruṣasyākhilātmanaḥ That's a comment that Śukadeva Gosvāmī makes (SB 8.7.44) about Lord Śiva, you know, during the pastime in the Eighth Canto when Śiva sees the universe is going to be destroyed by the poison halāhala that's coming out of the churning of the milk ocean. He goes for the sake of all living beings and he drinks it so no one would be poisoned. Then Śukadeva said, "See, vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ." He's the greatest of Vaiṣṇavas. What do Vaiṣṇavas do? They try to save others. That's the whole purpose—not to go to a cave, and not to claim some exclusive right, not to sequester oneself while everyone else is suffering, but to go out to Kensington Market, and Bloor and Spadina, and Dufferin Mall, and the old beat-up county courthouse or whatever that place is, and wherever people are, that's where we want to be. People try to rectify one mistake by making another mistake. This is the way of the struggle for existence in the material world. When you put the sugar cane through the grinder—not once, not twice, thrice, and maybe, if you're really cheap, you put it through again—that's tuccha. Even the cows come over and smell and go that's nothing left. That's tucchavat. Tucchavat means then you see these accumulations of material desires as being insignificant. They don't mean anything to you anymore because you have this: ar kabe nitāi-cānder. By the mercy of Nityānanda Prabhu, karuṇā hoibe—by His mercy, saṁsāra-vāsanā, these stored desires, layer upon layer, storage rooms full of all these desires, the vāsanās. Karma really means that we're forced to act now because of what we did before. In our mind, we're pushed to go in a certain direction because we've accumulated this karma, and we may think, "When's it going to hit me?" It's driving you right now. prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate And everyone thinks, "No, no, I meant to do that."If you've ever seen anybody mess up, and they go, "Yeah, I'm meant to do that"—every soul is messing up in the material world and is like, "We meant to do that.": And so they're forced into this because of saṁsāra-vāsanā, carried from one situation to the next to the next to the next because of vāsanā. So he says, 'kabe tuccha ha'be'—when will that time come? When, by the mercy of Lord Nityānanda, will I no longer be forced by material nature to move in a certain direction. When will Nitāi bestow His causeless mercy upon me, so that my desire for material enjoyment will become very insignificant? By their instruction I shall be able to properly understand the loving affairs of Radha and Krsna. 5) My only aspiration is to attain the lotus feet of the Six Gosvamis headed by Srila Rupa Gosvami and Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami. Lord Gauranga's golden form slightly trembled in ecstatic love of Godhead, and His footbells jingled. 3) All the devotees chanted the names Mukunda, Madhava, Yadava and Hari, their mouths being filled with the vibrations. They would announce to the still sleeping people, "You spend your nights uselessly sleeping and your days decorating your bodies! 4) You have achieved such a rare human body, but you do not care for this gift. You remain not serving the darling of Yasoda and slowly fall through your last moments to death. 5) With every rising and setting of the sun, a day passes and is lost. Then, why do you remain idle and not serve the Lord of the heart? 6) This temporary life is full of various miseries. Take shelter of the holy name as your only business. 7) To penetrate the darkness of ignorance and bless everyone's heart, the holy name has risen like the shining sun. 8) Drink the pure nectar of the holy name of Krsna. There is nothing but the name to be had in the fourteen worlds. Lord Nityananda Himself has opened a market-place of the Holy Name in Surabhi-Kunja. 2) The news of its great results is that He is selling the pure Holy Name in that market-place for the price of only one's faith. 3) Lord Nityananda, the proprietor of the market, seeing all the devotees become attracted, is selling them the Holy Name after bargaining with them. 4) O brother, if you want to buy the Holy Name, then go with me. We must go to the presence of that great soul, Nityananda. 5) You will buy the name of Krsna, I will take my commission and all of our desires will be fulfilled. 6) Lord Nityananda is greatly merciful. Taking only one's faith, He gives the highest ecstasy. 7) If Nitai sees only once tears in the eyes while chanting the name "Gaura", then He gives all resources to that person. 8) He gives the pure teachings of Krsna to everyone and does not care for one's birth, wealth, knowledge and strength. 9) Now, giving up the illusory snare of Maya, either remain in household life or in the forest as a sannyasi for no more troubles remain. 10) There is no more fear of the age of Kali. The merciful Nityananda gives the Holy Name to even the candalas. 11) Bhaktivinoda calls out "Except for the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda there is no other shelter!" Lord Nityananda Himself has opened a market-place of the Holy Name in Surabhi-Kunja. 2) The news of its great results is that He is selling the pure Holy Name in that market-place for the price of only one's faith. 3) Lord Nityananda, the proprietor of the market, seeing all the devotees become attracted, is selling them the Holy Name after bargaining with them. 4) O brother, if you want to buy the Holy Name, then go with me. We must go to the presence of that great soul, Nityananda. 5) You will buy the name of Krsna, I will take my commission and all of our desires will be fulfilled. 6) Lord Nityananda is greatly merciful. Taking only one's faith, He gives the highest ecstasy. 7) If Nitai sees only once tears in the eyes while chanting the name "Gaura", then He gives all resources to that person. 8) He gives the pure teachings of Krsna to everyone and does not care for one's birth, wealth, knowledge and strength. 9) Now, giving up the illusory snare of Maya, either remain in household life or in the forest as a sannyasi for no more troubles remain. 10) There is no more fear of the age of Kali. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities. 2) Chanting the holy name, dancing in ecstasy, singing, and playing musical instruments, the spiritual master is always gladdened by the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because he is relishing the mellows of pure devotion within his mind, sometimes his hair stands on end, he feels quivering in his body, and tears flow from his eyes like waves. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. 3) The spiritual master is always engaged in the temple worship of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. He also engages his disciples in such worship. They dress the Deities in beautiful clothes and ornaments, clean Their temple, and perform other similar worship of the Lord. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. 4) The spiritual master is always offering Krsna four kinds of delicious food [analyzed as that which is licked, chewed, drunk, and sucked]. When the spiritual master sees that the devotees are satisfied by eating bhagavat-prasada, he is satisfied. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. 5) The spiritual master is always eager to hear and chant about the unlimited conjugal pastimes of Radhika and Madhava, and Their qualities, names, and forms. The spiritual master aspires to relish these at every moment. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. 6) The spiritual master is very dear, because he is expert in assisting the gopis, who at different times make different tasteful arrangements for the perfection of Radha and Krsna's conjugal loving affairs within the groves of Vrndavana. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. 7) The spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord, because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord. This is acknowledged in all revealed scriptures and followed by all authorities. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is a bona fide representative of Sri Hari [Krsna]. 8) By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krsna. Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. They are the essence of all incarnations. The specific significance of these incarnations is that They introduced a process of chanting and dancing that is simply joyful. 2) My dear brother, I request that you just worship Lord Caitanya and Nityananda with firm conviction and faith. If one wants to be Krsna conscious by this process, one has to give up his engagement in sense gratification. One simply has to chant, "Hare Krsna! Hari Hari!" without any motive. 3) My dear brother, just try and examine this. Within the three worlds there is no one like Lord Caitanya or Lord Nityananda. Their merciful qualities are so great that upon hearing Them even birds and beasts cry and stones melt. 4) But Locana dasa regrets that I am entrapped by sense gratification. The nectar of life is concentration on Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa is present in His name. So you can trust the process: if you give yourself to full focus on the name, then you'll become absorbed and attracted. And it's not difficult. In rajas, the mind says, "I want to go somewhere else. I want to go somewhere else. I want to go somewhere else." And the mind flees to try to find some variety in the material nature. But all varieties come from Kṛṣṇa. Everything is complete in Kṛṣṇa, and if we surrender to that moment in which we just give our mind completely to Kṛṣṇa, then we can be in absorption. We won't even know what time it is or how long we've been chanting. We'll just be aware of one thing, and that is Kṛṣṇa's name in the Mahāmantra. So Kṛṣṇa has kindly appeared to us in this form of the Mahāmantra, and He's given us direct access to Him through this. So, we are reverent and we do the practice—not just chant and think of something else, but chant and only think of the name—and keep bringing our minds back to the name because it will go away. You have to be vigilant to come back to the name and be meditative on the holy name. They are the essence of all incarnations. The specific significance of these incarnations is that They introduced a process of chanting and dancing that is simply joyful. 2) My dear brother, I request that you just worship Lord Caitanya and Nityananda with firm conviction and faith. If one wants to be Krsna conscious by this process, one has to give up his engagement in sense gratification. One simply has to chant, "Hare Krsna! Hari Hari!" without any motive. 3) My dear brother, just try and examine this. Within the three worlds there is no one like Lord Caitanya or Lord Nityananda. Their merciful qualities are so great that upon hearing Them even birds and beasts cry and stones melt. 4) But Locana dasa regrets that I am entrapped by sense gratification. Since I have no attraction for the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, then Yamaraja, the superintendent of death, is punishing me by not allowing me to be attracted by this movement.
