With the Magnetic Fields Festival taking over Alsisar this weekend for its 9th edition, New Delhi producer, DJ and Qilla Records co-founder Madhav Shorey aka Kohra and Thailand's globe-trotting polymath Sunju Hargun are revisiting their B2B set from last year. Performed at the Resident Advisor afterparty, a highlight for the dancefloor-dedicated with its music going from the late hours of the night to the earliest moments of the morning, the accumulated energy of the night and its transformation into the morning audible in the set. Acid's mind-bending textures give way to increasingly guttural techno, pulling heavily from its minimal repertoire. As the night sky begins to lighten, the emotions are guided by the wash of the pads for a more refreshing conclusion. Our first premiere of the week comes from India-based Midnight Traffic as he serves up the first instalment of his new Option Paralysis series. We premiere 'Thaamara', a moody electro cut that is oozing with bubbling textures and bone-shattering 808 grooves. Midnight Traffic is the alias of Hyderabad based Producer/ DJ, Rishi. He has been producing music for over 8 years now, with frequent releases on Indian label Qilla Records and imprints like Berlin based Charybdis and The God's Planet from Italy, to name a few. Midnight Traffic's signature sound is a captivating fusion of techno's darkest depths enriched with modern sound design, hypnotic rhythms, and deep elements that possess a cerebral pull. The “Option Paralysis” series aims to showcase Midnight Traffic's quest to experiment with his production process by limiting the tools of creation at his disposal. In a world saturated with endless choices and advanced digital tools, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the multitude of options. The concept of the EP was birthed by the idea of introducing intentional roadblocks, exploring the creative possibilities within those limitations and transcending the paralysis. Vol.1 opens with “When in Doubt '', an evolving atmospheric soundscape inspired by the frequencies of nature juxtaposed with low swung, chuggy bass. "Free Fall" is built around pads that are created using field recording embellished with synthetic melodies and noise-infused drum elements. Drawing inspiration from both his native languages, ‘Salahalu' - the Telugu word for ‘suggestion' - is more conducive to the dance floor, with bubbling tension and trancy synth lines, and ‘Thamaara' - the Malayalam word for ‘lotus' - culminates the release with psychedelic textures and grounding grooves. Today we premiere the track 'Thamaara' from Midnight Traffic's latest EP “Option Paralysis Vol. 1". What's up you guys! Back again with a fresh new episode with DJ/Producer Blot! Unlike any of his previous interviews we get to know the "real" Gaurav Malaker! We talk about the current scenario, his journey, his phenomenal studio, and his love for music. To top it all off we also have a special appearance by his cute dog, Ella! About BLOT! BLOT! is a live electronic music project based out of Delhi, India. Straddling music and art, party & performance, Gaurav Malaker is the producer and DJ at the helm of the project. Since its start in 2007 with Thiruda (Avinash), BLOT! has slowly edged away from more minimal sounds into mastery of a warmer and more emotive sound that straddles techno and deeper side of modern house. The producer has delivered an inspiring run of music releases in his career spanning a decade, as well as immersive audiovisual sets and innumerable art installations both in India and abroad. With a full-length album released on Universal Music in 2013 as well as a more recent release on iconic label Diynamic Music, he is one of India's most sought-out producers and performs at club and festival dates all over the country to an extremely loyal fan base, which is rivaled by few. BLOT!'s club act evolves continually. The producer has a hands-on approach to his gigs, and his current preoccupation with warm, analog sounds and classic synthesizers have resulted in a slew of recent productions that are deep and delicate in equal measure, warm tracks with delicious chords and big basslines that are destined for the dancefloor, but at home anywhere. Malaker was also recently voted into the GQ 50 Most Influential Young Indians list and has performed at legendary venues and festivals across the world including Tresor and Bar25 (Berlin), Nuits Sonores (Lyon), and at London's South Bank Centre. In 2014 BLOT! won the VH1 Soundnation award for Best Electronic Act, following up with a double win at the MyFav Awards 2016, for Artist of the Year and Best Techno DJ. He has also scored advertisements for iconic brands and films, BLOT! is also one of the names responsible for co-founding the interdisciplinary creative festival UnBox and underground electronica label Qilla Records. BLOT! was previously awarded a grant by the Wellcome Collection to research and collaborate on Medicine Corner, a program of performances, film, and cultural activity based on informal health care practices from 2016-2017. Wild City #050 (yes, it is a landmark) comes from Gaurav Malaker, a producer best known as one half of India's leading multidisciplinary audio/visual collective, BLOT!. A producer/DJ/performer and engineer who's been a part of the national club landscape since 2007, Malaker is also a co-runner of Qilla Records alongside Kohra. Not to forget his role as one of the festival director's at UnBox. Talking strictly about music - his recently released debut record as BLOT! titled, 'Snafu', saw the producer delve deep into his roots and showcase a sound that blurred the distinction between electronica, house and techno. It even took the duo on an all India tour as BLOT! live, alongside all of the album's collaborators. As we hit our half century with the mix series, we figured now would be a good time to invite this beatmaker to show us what he's up to. Quite frankly, he's responded with a mix that possibly raises more questions than it answers. Don't get us wrong; the mix is good - very good. The surprise is that it finds Malaker digging a lot deeper than we expected, as much of his podcast consists of deep and dark electronica. From Mano Le Tough through to Kuedo, Apparat, Jai Paul and even some homemade BLOT! material, it's a 43 minute of teaser of what influences this young upcoming producer. And its got us thinking. In fact, it seems that there's a lot more to Gaurav Malaker than we initially suspected, but we're happy to sit back and listen as he continues to reveal himself, one bit at a time. Delhi based Qilla Records has fast become one of the country's key underground powerhouses, a name now associated internationally with underground dance music particularly with minimal and techno. Spearheaded by Madhav Shorey a.k.a Kohra and Gaurav Malaker, one half of BLOT, the label is now on the cusp of its 8th release. Unlike its predecessors, this is the first time the imprint has put together a compilation rather than an EP, showcasing a completely new direction for the label. "The idea behind our very first full-length compilation 'Open Dialect' came after we received a large number of demos that were all fantastic tracks but didn't quite fit the "label profile" so to speak. We decided to section out certain styles of tracks into compilations that support parallel ideas of the label presented differently." - Kohra, Qilla Records Due to be released on 21 May, the compilation features tracks from a number of young and upcoming producers from France, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and India. It also welcomes the Qilla debut of Bangalore based artists Vinayaka and Audio Units as well as Delhi based Habilis. We've been trying to pin down Kohra to do a Wild City mix for us, for a while now. The fact that it comes in the form of a promo mix for Open Dialect makes no difference to us. This is a fantastic release from an independent label that continues to that make huge strides in the right but yet unknown direction. This is what excites us. Drawing exclusively from tracks that feature on the compilation, Kohra has put together a mix that folds together deep rolling basslines and uplifting melodies with a dark hypnotic brooding undercurrent. A taste of what to expect from the release next week. "Qilla Records chooses to support the new breed of producers who aren't afraid to go back to their roots to understand the future of dance music. It isn't about genres anymore. Genres have cross-pollinated enough to create sound that is evocative of emotive nuances which break free from any form of categorisation. 'Open Dialect' was created to explore this state of mind." Born out of a shared vision of musical inspiration, the duo of D-Nox & Beckers has, over the last 6 years, firmly entrenched itself into the landscape of the worldwide electronic community With more than a quarter century of combined DJing and producing experience between them,Christian “D-Nox” Wedekind and Frank "Beckers" effectively merge a seasoned musical grounding with a dynamic creative spark that never fails in its ability to adapt to the ever-changing vista of electronic dance music. In the time since their debut release saw the light of day in late 2004, the emergence of D-Nox & Beckers has been nothing short of astounding. Their 2007 album Left Behind on the Electribe imprint was met with critical acclaim and led to a heavy worldwide touring schedule with constant appearances in thriving musical centers across the globe. This weekend Christian “D-Nox” Wedekind and Frank "Beckers" are heading over to India to play shows in Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai as part of a tour organised by Qilla Records & 8 Bit. Alongside this they'll be running a workshop in Delhi and Mumbai teaching keen musicians the art of production, masting and music business. In celebration of their first ever visit to the country they've very kindly put together Wild City 007. A cohesive and vibrant mix that navigates house, techno and more over the course of an hour.
