Publicerad första gången 2022-03-02.Om man betänker att solen en dag kommer brinna ut och slockna, kan den enskilda människans dödlighet framstå som något av en bagatell. Ur ett kosmologiskt perspektiv är det inte bara människolivet som är försvinnande kort. Detsamma gäller varaktigheten hos livet som sådant, liksom själva jordens existens.Ändå är det just insikten om det egna livets ändlighet som präglar vår upplevelse av tillvaron, i sådan grad att den tyske historiefilosofen Oswald Spengler tyckte sig se människans dödsmedvetenhet gestaltas inte bara i hennes personliga världsåskådning, utan i hela hennes kulturella strävan: Obehaget inför livets ändlighet utgör, enligt Spengler, grunden för "varje religion, varje naturforskning, varje filosofi".Kanske är det därför bara följdriktigt att den västerländska kulturens mest tongivande filosof, Platon, bygger sin lära på föreställningen om en yttersta verklighet befriad från all förgänglighet: en oföränderlig sfär vars perfekta former existerar evigt, utan att någonsin förfalla och gå under, och utan att någonsin ha blivit till. För det är just efter evigheten som människan tycks sträcka sig inför den skrämmande anblicken av sin egen förestående död. För att slippa vara Samuel Becketts människa, utkastad ur moderlivet bara för att ta mark i en grav, föreställer vi oss ett tillstånd där ingenting föds och ingenting dör, och intalar oss att vi hör hemma där.När fysikern Brian Greene i boken "Till tidens slut" ställer människans utveckling sida vid sida med kosmos är förgängligheten – både människans och universums – överhängande. De frågor Greene ställer sig om språk, religion, konst och vetenskap har alla, helt i linje med Spenglers analys, en gemensam botten, nämligen döden. Livets bräcklighet är förstås en avgörande faktor i varje evolutionär förklaring av människans konstitution – att en egenskap är evolutionärt fördelaktig, betyder ju bara att den ger sin bärare förmågan att undkomma döden ännu ett litet tag. Men kanske är förgängligheten lika relevant för att förstå de mänskliga kulturyttringar som saknar en tydlig evolutionär funktion? Greene citerar kulturantropologen Ernst Becker, som menar att hela civilisationsprojektet kan förstås som ett enda stort tilltag för att minska den potentiellt förlamande inverkan av insikten om vår egen dödlighet. Och, lägger författaren till, om du inte finner Beckers analys övertygande, utan tänker att den insikten väl inte är så farlig, beror det helt enkelt på att civilisationen har gjort sitt jobb – utan kulturbyggets kväsande av vår dödsångest hade för övrigt också en sådan här essä varit omöjlig att uthärda.Den som ändå tvivlar kan ta del av en studie som vid 1980-talets slut genomfördes med domare i amerikanska domstolar. Innan de skulle avkunna sina beslut gavs vissa av domarna en påminnelse om sin egen dödlighet. Till exempel kunde de få frågan: "Vilka känslor väcker tankarna på din egen död hos dig?". Effekten var slående: De domare som på så vis påmints om det oblida öde som väntade dem utdömde i genomsnitt nio gånger hårdare straff än sina kollegor. Tanken på det egna jagets förgänglighet tycktes med andra ord leda direkt till ett strängare bevakande av regelverket. Tydligare illustration av kulturell disciplinering som en försvarsåtgärd mot ångesten inför livets ändlighet kan man knappast hoppas på att hitta; Sigmund Freuds gamla tes om civilisationen som ett sätt att kontrollera dödsdriften tycks mer eller mindre otvetydigt ledd i bevis.Det är emellertid, konstaterar Greene, ett beklagligt faktum att evigheten är svår att uppnå, och att odödlighet förblir en omöjlighet annat än i en mycket specifik version. Den kräver att vi ger upp våra tankar på evigt liv i en konkret bemärkelse, och håller tillgodo med en symbolisk, samtidigt som vi begränsar vår förståelse av "evig" till att betyda något i stil med "så länge den mänskliga civilisationen består". Det rör sig förstås om det eviga liv som skapandet av stor konst eller betydande vetenskap kan skänka: det som givits Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Bach, Newton och en skara andra odödliga gestalter vars kroppar sedan länge förmultnat till jord.Men, fortsätter Greene, inte heller den konstnär vars chanser att få tillträde till denna form av evighet tycks smala behöver misströsta: bara genom att utöva sin konstnärliga impuls har han eller hon tagit ett avgörande steg, nämligen att överföra sin längtan efter odödlighet från en konkret till en symbolisk nivå. Här kan vi luta oss mot Freud-lärjungen Otto Rank, som menade att människan genom att utöva kreativitet kan möta sin egen rädsla för döden, och med konstnärliga medel upprätta en värld där den kan övervinnas. Det är, påpekar Greene, ett synsätt som får klichébilden av den plågade konstnären att framstå i ett annat ljus: Kanske är konstnären i själva verket den enda bland oss som förmår att faktiskt kännas vid och acceptera sin egen dödlighet, helt enkelt eftersom hon är den enda som funnit på ett sätt att konfrontera den.Med en sådan förståelse försätts också människans vilja till symbolisk representation, till bildkonst, musik, berättande och kanske också religion, i intim relation till döden. Det mänskliga språket uppkom som ett sätt att ge uttryck för verkligheten, den verklighet i vilken vi föds, åldras och dör, men när det en gång uppstått visade det sig kunna användas för att negera den, för att ge upphov till världar i vilken den vanliga tillvarons logik är satt ur spel. Sagan bröt sig loss ur vetandet, och fick eget liv. Och på samma gång kan förstås detta språk fortfarande användas för att, likt Greene och hans fysikerkollegor, borra sig allt djupare in i verklighetens kärna, för att vinna kunskap om universums beskaffenhet, dess historia och dess framtid.Och i något skede försvinner kanske gränsen mellan dessa strävanden, och saga och vetande blir återigen omöjliga att skilja åt. En dag, i en ofattbart avlägsen framtid, kommer rymdens expansion att få alla de galaxer vi idag kan observera från jorden att försvinna bortom vår kosmologiska horisont – och med dem merparten av de belägg vi använt för att komma fram till den vetenskapliga berättelse om universum som vi lever med idag. Den kvardröjande kosmiska bakgrundsstrålningen är vid det laget så svag att den inte längre kan vittna om ett universum under utvidgning, och allt som finns kvar är en svart, till synes oföränderlig rymd. I denna avlägsna framtid blir historien om världsalltets födelse i en het, förtätad smäll, ur vars rester otaliga solar och världar formades, en berättelse bland andra – om vi nu ska tro att det finns någon kvar som kan berätta den.Och i en ännu mer fjärran framtid, långt efter att galaxerna försvunnit utom synhåll, långt efter att solen ätit jorden och alla stjärnor brunnit ut, efter att all materia uppslukats av svarta hål som sedan själva sakta avdunstar i strålning, till dess att också de är borta, kommer allt att stillna. Och när ingenting längre finns som kan förändras, finns inte heller någon tid. Inte bara det mänskliga livet, eller livet som sådant, har då nått sin ände – utan tiden själv. Niedrigere Kosten und bessere Produkte könnten zu höherer Nachfrage bei Künstlicher Intelligenz führen. Diesen Optimismus, den Beckers für die KI-Branche hat, kann er für die deutsche Wirtschaft nicht aufbringen. „Wir sind in der existentiellsten Wirtschaftskrise der gesamten Nachkriegszeit“, warnt er. Jan Beckers ist Seriengründer und Tech-Investor. Schon seit seiner Studienzeit ist er in der Startup-Szene unterwegs und leitet mit Bit Capital einen der erfolgreichsten Tech-Fonds in Europa. 2024 war ein erfolgreiches Jahr für BIT Capital. Mit gleich vier Fonds findet sich Jan Beckers in den Top Ten der aktiv gemanagten Fonds des Jahres wieder. Mit dem BIT Global Leaders hat er mit 70% sogar die beste Performance aller vergleichbaren Produkte erzielt. Gelungen ist das mit dem sehr aktiven Handelsansatz, wodurch das Depot mehrfach im Jahr komplett durchrotiert wurde. Auch 2025 will Beckers mit seinem Team den Markt wieder deutlich outperformen. Im Podcast verrät er seine Pläne für das Börsenjahr im Bereich Aktien und Kryptowährungen und seine Erwartungen an die Makro-Daten. Thematisch wird sich auch in diesem Jahr wieder viel um KI drehen, Spannung sieht Beckers aber auch im Small- und Midcapbereich. „Hier kommt es allerdings auf gutes Stockpicking an, weil es unwahrscheinlich ist, dass die ganze Breite dieser Werte ein gutes Jahr vor sich haben werden“, so der Fondsmanager und Gründer von BIT Capital. Fred and Bobbie Becker have enjoyed a long and successful career at sea as cruise ship magicians. In addition to performing magic with her husband, Bobbie is a talented singer who often belts out show tunes and popular music during their show. Like all other entertainers, the Beckers had to find creative outlets during the years of lockdown. Many years ago, Fred decided to help others who want to pursue a job on the high seas so he developed Gigs On Ships. As technology and the cruise ship industry changed, so did the course. Today the Beckers are dealing with industry changes and ageism. Among the busy stretch of dance music festivals in Europe taking place in the summer, Romania's Untold Festival has grown to become one of its highlights. Markus Schulz has been privileged to play the festival on many occasions, and for the first time, it is featured as part of his Global DJ Broadcast World Tour series; with Markus playing on the Fortune stage last Sunday night.   Markus remained in Romania for a few days after the event, and made a special 60 minute Untold Reflections Mix to compliment the festival performance. Beginning summer with the emotional journey of the Sunrise Set, the midpoint is traditionally highlighted by our annual Coldharbour Day celebrations. It's a small way for our Coldharbour family to say thanks to everyone who supports the label, and those responsible for creating the tracks we cherish.   This tradition is another passion project for me, with a four hour journey made especially for the occasion; constructed among travels across three continents.
