Speak (https://speak.com) may not be very well known to native English speakers, but they have come from a slow start in 2016 to emerge as one of the favorite partners of OpenAI, with their Startup Fund leading and joining their Series B and C as one of the new AI-native unicorns, noting that “Speak has the potential to revolutionize not just language learning, but education broadly”. Today we speak with Speak's CTO, Andrew Hsu, on the journey of building the “3rd generation” of language learning software (with Rosetta Stone being Gen 1, and Duolingo being Gen 2). Speak's premise is that speech and language models can now do what was previously only possible with human tutors—provide fluent, responsive, and adaptive instruction—and this belief has shaped its product and company strategy since its early days. https://www.linkedin.com/in/adhsu/ https://speak.com One of the most interesting strategic decisions discussed in the episode is Speak's early focus on South Korea. While counterintuitive for a San Francisco-based startup, the decision was influenced by a combination of market opportunity and founder proximity via a Korean first employee. South Korea's intense demand for English fluency and a highly competitive education market made it a proving ground for a deeply AI-native product. By succeeding in a market saturated with human-based education solutions, Speak validated its model and built strong product-market fit before expanding to other Asian markets and eventually, globally. The arrival of Whisper and GPT-based LLMs in 2022 marked a turning point for Speak. Suddenly, capabilities that were once theoretical—real-time feedback, semantic understanding, conversational memory—became technically feasible. Speak didn't pivot, but rather evolved into its second phase: from a supplemental practice tool to a full-featured language tutor. This transition required significant engineering work, including building custom ASR models, managing latency, and integrating real-time APIs for interactive lessons. It also unlocked the possibility of developing voice-first, immersive roleplay experiences and a roadmap to real-time conversational fluency. To scale globally and support many languages, Speak is investing heavily in AI-generated curriculum and content. Instead of manually scripting all lessons, they are building agents and pipelines that can scaffold curriculum, generate lesson content, and adapt pedagogically to the learner. This ties into one of Speak's most ambitious goals: creating a knowledge graph that captures what a learner knows and can do in a target language, and then adapting the course path accordingly. This level-adjusting tutor model aims to personalize learning at scale and could eventually be applied beyond language learning to any educational domain. Finally, the conversation touches on the broader implications of AI-powered education and the slow real-world adoption of transformative AI technologies. Despite the capabilities of GPT-4 and others, most people's daily lives haven't changed dramatically. Speak sees itself as part of the generation of startups that will translate AI's raw power into tangible consumer value. The company is also a testament to long-term conviction—founded in 2016, it weathered years of slow growth before AI caught up to its vision. Now, with over $50M ARR, a growing B2B arm, and plans to expand across languages and learning domains, Speak represents what AI-native education could look like in the next decade. A partnership between Hamline University and a school in Hawaii is helping to save a native dialect. On the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the students of Ke Kula Niʻihau o Kekaha immersion school speak the native language of the nearby island of Ni'iihau, which only has about 200 native speakers on the island. Ten years ago, the only booked published in the dialect was a Bible. Now, thanks to a partnership with Hamline's Center for Global Environmental Education, there are more than 400 books written in the dialect by students and staff. Tracy Fredin, the director of Hamline's Center for Global Environmental Education and Tia Koerte, the principal of Ke Kula Niʻihau o Kekaha immersion school, joined Minnesota Now to talk about the project.

Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 13: Guinea Talk: Gloucester County's Unique Dialect Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky Date: Feb 2, 2025 Length: 39:44 Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each month Take a ride with us--to Guinea Neck! Nestled in the marshland of Gloucester County, Virginia, is Guinea Neck, where the local community has made their living off the water for centuries. Traditionally, the lifestyle of Guinea has been comprised of long hours on the water and a tight knit community, the ideal situation for the development of a unique language variation. Although receding, the Guinea dialect is well known in the Gloucester area. We tapped into oral histories to try to understand the unique features of their dialect. In this episode, we introduce you to four Guinea watermen, born and raised in the early to mid-twentieth century. We take account of their stories of living and working on the water, while walking through the stages of their lives and experiences. Along the way we talk with linguist, Dr. Bridget Anderson at Old Dominion University. Dr. Anderson is the founder of the Tidewater Voices oral history project (see info below). Dr. Anderson talks with us about how to listen for differences in the vowels and other features of the Tidewater and Guinea variations and emphasizes the importance of deeper, broader study to understand the distinct variations. We also talk with Carlene Klein who, with two other students of Dr. Anderson, through a yearlong ethnographic process, interviewed a number of the Guinea watermen. The Guinea watermen featured in this episode share stories of growing up in the remote marshes of Guines, of living with their close family connections, of learning the ropes and starting work on the water at young ages, and of the joy of being on the water. Tidewater Voices is housed at ODU Digital Commons and is available to the public for research. There are 22 Guinea oral histories in the collection. You can find them here: https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices_gloucester/ Look for the Guinea subheading. President Donald Trump has signed a wide range of executive orders since taking office on Monday. Some of those orders are already drawing lawsuits and criticism from cities, states and advocacy groups. Anthony Michael Kreis, a constitutional law professor at Georgia State University, returns to “Closer Look” to explain Trump’s executive orders, policy proposals and their potential implications. Plus, according to the Migration Policy Institute, roughly 98,000 undocumented students nationwide graduate from high school each year in the U.S. About 3,000 of which are from Georgia. However, data also suggests undocumented students face barriers and challenges when it comes to attending college. In an effort to help, TheDream.U.S. offers scholarships, and students can apply now. Dr. Hyein Lee, the COO of TheDream.US, talks more about the history and mission of her organization and its scholarship opportunities. Lastly, a new Georgia Tech and Stanford study shows automatic speech recognition (ASR) models, used in voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, may not be as accurate when transcribing English speakers with a minority dialect. However, the study found the transcription of Standard American English (SAE) "significantly outperformed" three dialects: Spanglish, Chicano English and African American Vernacular English. Camille Harris, PhD candidate in computer science at Georgia Institute of Technology, and lead author of the study, discusses some of the key findings from her study. There can be a tendency to view folklore as antiquated customs, old legends, or outdated practices. Yet folklore is not disconnected from contemporary life, and is an ever-evolving part of our lived experience. Folk music and folk art are two obvious branches, yet dialect and language is another. Louise Pound refers to dialect as "a species of folklore" while J. D. A. Widdowson described language and folklore as "those twin pillars on which the whole fabric of our cultural traditions rests". True, language does evolve and change over time, but as dialects run parallel to folklore, and preserve traditions in linguistic form, I thought it high time that we visit a specific dialect - mine. Let's explore some of the background of the Geordie dialect - and some of its phrases - in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! "If you grow up being told that one of your first languages, Singlish, is actually a bad version of an already existing language, you kind of get this sense that “I'm just bad at language,” says Bibek Gurung, a former linguist who grew up in Singapore speaking Singlish with his family and friends, while schools and the government tried to quash it. "Language is a fundamental human skill. And to just have this sense that you're bad at this very fundamental skill really does a number to your self esteem and your abilities to communicate in general."
