Just Old Time Radio returns you to those days of yesteryear, when radio reigned supreme. Listen and enjoy once again to those shows that were loved by millions. Just Old Time Radio presents Hop Harrigan in Crash Of Death Head 11/7/44Aviation adventures as a genre seems odd to us now, and that's probably for a few simple reasons. First, many of the kids listening to such aviation adventures as The Air Adventures of Jimmy Allen, Captain Midnight, and Hop Harrigan had watched their first plane flying overhead as a singular, wondrous thing droning high above across the sky. WWI aces, flying barnstormers and air explorers like "Lucky Lindy" and Amelia Earhardt fired the imaginations of the 20's and 30's eras. Pylon racing, all but forgotten today, was as big as Nascar in some regions of America. Then, WWII had its civilian defense "plane spotter" awareness. But the jet took the human element out of flying, and the aviation adventure was quiet until we reached for "outer space."

Best of Old Time Radio presents Alan Young Show Alan Young, an English born actor, learned the craft in Canada. He suffered from asthma as a young child and listened to a lot of radio while he was stuck at home. Young's first Canadian show was called Stag Party. He was virtually the entire show, but after asking for a raise (from $15/week), he was fired, but soon broke into American radio. His summer replacement show for Eddie Cantor was "routine situation comedy" laced with "rapid-fire gags." It leads to his new show and the same year he was signed for the Jimmy Durante Show in 1948. The Alan Young Show ran between 1944-1949, when it was canceled, Young toured the US comedy circuit with his bagpipes and jokes in hand. He had a hot and cold career on the radio and perhaps best known for his 1961-65 TV role of Wilbur Post, the man who talked to Mr. Ed, the talking horse. Alan Young had a supporting role in the 1960 film The Time Machine. Later Alan Young worked doing a voiceovers for the very Scottish Scrooge McDuck in the animated show, Duck Tales.

This week, the third of nine known, surviving episodes of the 1930-31 classic "Empire Builders," the earliest recorded dramatic series from network radio. This one is from December 29, 1930, and it stars a very young Don Ameche. Plus, a look at that great train sound effect that starts each episode. And: The first episode of the amusing, somewhat corny "hick" serial "The Misadventures of Si and Elmer," from 1931 or 1933, and the third installment of "Friendly Five Footnotes," with its delightful early '30s pop. They simply don't make radio like this anymore, so come along... on another Radio Journey.

Just Old Time Radio returns you to those days of yesteryear, when radio reigned supreme. Listen and enjoy once again to those shows that were loved by millions. Just Old Time Radio presents Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett in Apartment Building Next Door 9/23/45In the summer of 1947, a fantastic new domestic comedy series was begun. It featured the lives of the Nelson family, Ozzie, Harriet and their sons David and Ricky. Harriet met Ozzie when he was looking for a girl singer for his band, they married in October 1935 and had a son, David, in October 1936 and another son, Eric (Ricky), in May 1940. These two sons would later play themselves in this hugely successful show. The family were constantly entangled in the amusing situations Ozzie had caused. Once he had set his mind to something, nothing could dissuade him until disaster had run its inevitable course.
We begin this week solemnly, with an appeal and a moment of silence for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and for our entire nation. Then, in our regular programming, we offer a brief profile of broadcast announcing pioneer Graham McNamee (photo at right), followed by the second episode of "Coca-Cola Top Notchers," from March 26, 1930, which McNamee hosted. Then, some good times with "Cliff and Lolly, the Nuts of Harmony," also from 1930.
