It's St. Patrick's Day, so Have You Ever Seen #652 gets into an IRA frame of mind, puts on some green and talks about John Ford's The Informer. The legendary director and leading man Victor McLaglen won Oscars, but the set-bound film itself lost out to the epic grandeur of Mutiny On The Bounty for Best Picture. McLaglen plays a pathetic liar who betrays and rats out a fellow Irishman to British authorities...and deals with his guilt (badly) by blowing all his blood money as soon as possible. So pour a Guinness, boyos & girlos and prepare for another Ryan monologue here in Oscar Month as the 90-year-old The Informer is on deck. Pour some Irish whiskey into your Sparkplug Coffee. Or don't. Mel Gibson, Mutiny on the Bounty, and historical accuracy take center stage in this episode of Hugging the Cactus: A Mel Gibson Podcast. Join us as we dive into the 1984 film The Bounty, directed by Roger Donaldson, featuring an all-star cast including Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson, and Laurence Olivier. We explore the real-life mutiny that inspired this cinematic retelling, the troubled production history (including developmental hell, budget woes, and Mel Gibson's bar fights), and how it stacks up against earlier versions like the 1935 Clark Gable classic and the 1962 Marlon Brando film. From Robert Bolt's screenplay to Vangelis' soundtrack and Arthur Ibbetson's cinematography, we unpack why this historically accurate take didn't resonate with audiences or awards, despite its stunning visuals and epic scope. Was it the lack of a sequel, bad timing, or simply an unremakeable classic? Stick around for the full story of Fletcher Christian, Lieutenant Bligh, and a ship that changed naval history forever.

The story of HMS Bounty and the mutiny that took place aboard it is a compelling narrative that has not surprisingly been the subject of many film adaptations and other creative endeavours. In this discussion from 2020 that originally went out on the Stinking Pause podcast, regular Film Gold collaborator Scott Phipps is joined by myself and Steven Byford for a long and expansive discussion of the 1962 film version of the story and its troubled production, as well as the other film versions and their relationship to the real-life events. A lot of the discussion, from my end at least, focuses on the enigmatic character that was Marlon Brando, who I describe as 'a fascinating mixture of deep and shallow'. His antics on the set had a detrimental effect on his career and his relationship with Hollywood, but there are some magic moments to be found in the film, many of them courtesy of arguably the most important actor in film history. If you're interested in a 2-part deep dive on Brando, please listen to episodes 11 & 12 of this podcast. We hope you enjoy the show! We are going all the way back to 1935 for this week's podcast. Mutiny on the Bounty only won one Academy Award that year, but it was for Best Picture. This is #56 in our countdown of Best Picture list, based on our unscientific blind ranking. Check out our trailer or its description for further details on the list. Directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, and Francois Tone, Mutiny on the Bounty is based on a book series that's based (somewhat loosely) on the true story of the Bounty, an 18th Century British ship. The ship is helmed by Captain Bligh (Laughton), whose authoritarian tactics test the loyalties of his crew.

One of the most famous and most successful retellings of one of the most infamous and highly mythologized incidents in the history of the British Navy, this 1935 adaptation of the novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Newton Hall might be a little old-fashioned for most modern audiences, both in its acting styles and in its special effects. But it was a force to be reckoned with at the 9th annual Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and scoring 3 nominations for its three lead actors in a single category. The facts of the mutiny were twisted, politicized, and hotly contested almost as soon as it happened, so a film made almost 150 years later might be forgiven for not being completely historically accurate, but what it got right and what it got wrong, where it holds up and where it doesn't all provide excellent topics of discussion on this final episode of our long suffering and much beleaguered series on Naval War Films. Numerous novels, TV shows and as many as 5 movies- including the Hollywood classic starring Clarke Gable and Marlon Brando - have immortalised the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty in the popular imagination forever. The mutiny on the HMS Bounty occurred in the South Pacific Ocean on 28 April 1789. Disaffected crewmen, led by acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian, seized control of the ship from their captain, Lieutenant Bligh, and set him and eighteen loyalists adrift in a rowing boat. The mutineers settled on Tahiti and Pitcairn Island, while Bligh navigated more than 4,000 miles in the rowing boat to safety. and began the process of bringing the mutineers to justice.Direct descendent of lead mutineer Fletcher Christian, Harrison Christian joins Dan on the podcast to seperate the myth from the truth in this epic tale of a rebellious crew, a mammoth journey and a lost colony in the far-flung tropics of the Pacific Ocean. The legends started when William Bligh returned to Britain and immediately rewrote the facts of what happened to fit his narrative; novelists and film-writers have been doing the same ever since. The producer was Mariana Des Forges and the audio editor was Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store.
