The main story in parashat Sh'lach [Numbers 13:1-15:41] is the tragedy of the spies. In some ways, this sin, the failure of the Israelites to recognize that their destiny is to conquer the land no matter what the odds, is their greatest sin. For the rabbis, there seems to be little question, for they associate the sin of the spies with Tisha B'Av, the worst day on the Jewish calendar, whereas the sin of the Golden Calf is associated with the 17th of Tammuz, a prelude to Tisha B'Av. The verb la-tur, “to seek out, spy out, explore”, which is repeated many times througout the narrative of the spies, is picked up in the final section of the parashah, which we know as the third paragraph of the Sh'ma. There, the tzitzit, the ritual fringes, are intended to prevent Israelites from being led astray by their hearts and eyes. In a sense, this paragraph comes to remind us that the very act of la-tur, seeking out, is fraught with danger. Whether the initial command comes from God or Mose, or even the people themselvies is, perhaps immaterial. It is the command to la-tur, to scout out, without the requisite controls suggested by the tzitzit, which dooms the spies. We are often led astray. God provides the means to withstand the temptation. Now that war seems to have resumed, our thoughts and prayers are with those defending the United States as part of the United States Armed Forces and those defending Israel as members of the Israel Defense Forces. May peace soon descend on the region and all other troubled areas on earth. Shabbat Shalom.

Karee White joins host Ron Aaron and guest co-host Tina Smith to talk about her caregiving story on this edition of Caregiver SOS. About Karee Karee White is a veteran, military mother, and Elizabeth Dole Foundation Caregiver Fellow based in Apex, North Carolina. She and her husband Jim are both veterans. Seven of their nine children have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces—a legacy of service that stretches back nearly 250 years in their family. Her Story: Karee's daughter Kimmy, an Army paratrooper, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury at 25 years old while forward stationed in Italy following a deployment to Afghanistan. Kimmy was in a coma for a year. When doctors told the family there was nothing more they could do, they brought her home. Fifteen years later, Kimmy is relearning to walk and can speak a few words. Karee has been her primary caregiver throughout. Her Book: Ash Woven is officially released April 23, 2026. Karee's memoir traces her family's journey through generational service, sacrifice, and healing. It explores how strength is not newly found in crisis—it is remembered, drawn from those who came before. A portion of the proceeds supports the I Love Everyone Foundation. Available on Amazon. Her Work with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation: As a Dole Caregiver Fellow with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Karee is part of a national network of military and veteran caregivers who share their stories to drive awareness, policy, and support. There are 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers in the U.S. (2024 RAND report), and millions more—including an estimated 2.3 million children—quietly providing unpaid care in those homes. Hosts Ron Aaron and Carol Zernial, and their guests talk about Caregiving and how to best cope with the stresses associated with it. Parashat Sh'mini [Leviticus 9-11] features the strange story of Nadav and Avihu, and the even stranger haftarah from 2 Samuel [6:1-7:17], as well as the levitical version of the dietary laws [there is a close parallel in Deuteronomy 14]. We found ourselves recording during Chol Ha-mo'ed Pesach, wondering whether we should talk about the parashah, or something else, since the last 2 days of yom tov are still in front of us. In addition to parashat Sh'mini, we also begin reading Pirkai Avot this Shabbat, and continue to do so for the remaining Shabbat afternoons before Shavuot. Some will continue reading Pirkai Avot until just before Rosh Hashanah. Pirkai Avot is a charming little book, unlike any other tractate in the Mishnah. We hope you enjoy our conversation! We would be curious to hear from you about your favorite mishnah in the tractate. In the meanwhile, both the United States and Israel continue to be at war with Iran. We keep close to our hearts the soldiers in the United States Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces, may they be removed from harm's way. And, we keep in mind, too, the innocent civilians everywhere, may they soon find a true measure of peace. Mo'adim le-simchah. Chag Same'ach. Shabbat Shalom.

Shannonwatch claims there's a direct threat posed to Shannon Airport by the US military's continued use of the base. The activist group is calling on the Irish Government to follow in the footsteps of their Spanish, French and Italian counterparts by restricting the US's access to airspace and bases. According to the group, two flights associated with the United States Armed Forces landed at Shannon on Tuesday alone, with a further five passing through Irish airspace on the same day. Shannonwatch founder Edward Horgan continuing the relationship puts Shannon at risk of attack from enemies of the Trump administration.
Parashat Tzav [Levicus 6:1-8:36] presents the principal sacrifices discussed last week, but this time from the perspective of the priests. Watch the Devotion Based on Isaiah 42:16 Welcomed Light I have a love—hate relationship with light. Some mornings, when that sunlight blasts through the shades of my bedroom window, I'm just not having it. I know the day's work schedule, the difficult conversations that need to be had, and that light exposes my unwillingness to face the day. On the other hand, I love the light. My travels take me to places around the country where the skies are cloudy and gloomy every single day I'm there! Then I fly home to Southern California – and I admit, we're a bit spoiled here – and the sunshine is a welcomed light. This is true for our spiritual life. Light is unwelcomed intruder, like a drill instructor rolling through the barracks exposing contraband, the things that are not supposed to be there. The light of God's law, what he demands from us as his people, exposed the things that are not supposed to be in our hearts. We are to love him with all our heart, soul and mind. We are to use our bodies to his glory. We are to love our neighbor, whomever they may be, to act and speak with attitudes that best serve them… ouch. Just saying those words is like light that exposes the unwanted attitudes in my heart. How about you? In the darkness of our sin, we do not see clearly how we are to love God and love our neighbor, or why we love God and neighbor. That's where light of God's gospel is a welcomed light. Listen as God speaks through the prophet Isaiah: “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them” (Isaiah 42:16). Do you see the light? God promises you that he will not forsake you, that is, he will not leave you in the dark, leave you to your sins. Instead, he shines his light and illuminates the path that leads to forgiveness, to Christ, who is your light. Earlier in the chapter the LORD looked ahead to the promised Messiah and said of him, “I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles” (Isaiah 42:6). Jesus is your light. When you find yourself stumbling around in the darkness of your guilt over your lack of love for God and neighbor, look for the light of Christ. He is right here in these words of promise. Go to church! He will not cast you out because of darkness in your heart. Instead, he will shine his light of forgiveness upon you. Create a battle plan to read about God's light for you this week by doing a bible search for the word “light”. Read as many of them as possible this week and soak in those promises. Let God's light be a welcomed light in your heart. Prayer: O Lord Jesus Christ, by your almighty power you opened the eyes of the blind and showed yourself to them. Turn our eyes away from worthless things and lead us to love you sincerely. We entrust to your care all who are deployed. Guide the members of our military to carry out their vocations safely. Enable them to return home to their families and friends unharmed. Continue to bless the training of our United States Armed Forces to bring justice, establish peace and bring aid to those affected by disaster. In your name we pray. Amen. …ON TODAYS PROGRAM… TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER DESIGNATING INDY CAR RACE THRU THE STREETS OF WASHINGTON DC! CELEBRATING THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE USA!! WITH BARCELONA TESTING BEHIND US…WHO IS AHEAD? MERCEDES and FORD! FERNANDO SAYS…WE LEARN SOMETHING FROM ADRIAN NEWEY EVERYDAY! THIS WEEK'S NASIR HAMEED CORNER…MORE VINTAGE BANTER BETWEEN THE HOST AND NASIR…THIS WEEKS SPECIAL GUEST: JOHN WATSON!!! John Watson's Formula 1 debut at 1973 British Grand Prix Watson's first F1 car was a March-Cosworth 721 which he drove on the non-championship Victory Race at Brands Hatch. A year after, he was ready to move up to F1, making his debut in the British GP where he drove a Brabham BT37, and after that competed in the US Grand Prix with Brabham BT42. He retired in both races. In 1974, he drove for Goldie Hexagon Racing team with a Brabham BT42 and BT44, scoring his first world championship point with a sixth place at Monaco. He scored a total of six points that season. He failed to score points in the following year when he drove for Team Surtees before switching to the American Penske squad. First Formula 1 victory with Penske at Austrian Grand Prix He secured his first podium with the third place at the 1976 French Grand Prix. Later that season came his first victory, driving for Penske in the Austrian Grand Prix. After the race, he shaved off his beard, the result of a bet with the team owner Roger Penske. In 1977 and 1978, Watson raced with Brabham-Alfa Romeo machinery, in the first year for Martini Racing and in the second for Parmalat Racing Team. In 1977, problems with the car, accidents and a disqualification resulted with Watson racing the full distance in only five of the 17 races. In 1978, he reached three podiums and notched up 25 points to earn sixth place in the championship. In McLaren Team since 1979 For the season of 1979, Watson moved to Marlboro McLaren Team. The next two seasons were without any victories, and finally in 1981, at British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Watson secured his second F1 win. It was a maiden victory for the trend-setting carbon fibre composite monocoque McLaren MP4 car, designed by John Barnard, and managed by the team's new boss, Ron Dennis. New monococque saved his life. Later in the season, the strength of the carbon fibre monocoque was demonstrated when John had a fiery crash at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix. He started seventh on the grid and raced for 19 laps. Watson lost control of the car, coming out of the high speed Lesmo bends and crashed backwards into the barriers. The car was halved but Watson walked away unhurt. Similar accidents had previously proven fatal, but Watson was uninjured, and that lucky break proved the strength of the new carbon fiber construction. Third place in the 1982 F1 championship His most successful year was 1982, when he finished third in the drivers' championship, winning two Grands Prix (Zolder and Detroit). Most impressive was his victory at the first ever Detroit Grand, on a tight and twisty track that was difficult to pass through. Watson worked his way from the 17th starting position on the grid and charged through the field scoring a victory. Master-class victory at Long Beach Watson made a similar master-class victory the following year at the final Formula One race in Long Beach (USA). On the street circuit, he started from 22nd on the grid and succeeded to win the race. Watson's final victory also included a fight for the position with his teammate Niki Lauda, who had started the race at the 23rd spot, but Watson ultimately finished 27 seconds ahead of his famous teammate. ASTON MARTIN ARAMCO COMPLETE BARCELONA SHAKEDOWN Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain, 30 January 2026: The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team continued its Shakedown programme at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya today, with Fernando Alonso getting behind the wheel of the AMR26 for the first time. Fernando headed out on track at approximately 09:30 and completed running across both the morning and afternoon sessions, with the team focused on mileage accumulation and initial reliability checks. He completed a total of 61 laps across the day. Across the two days of running in Barcelona, both Fernando and Lance Stroll have now driven the AMR26, allowing the team to build an early baseline understanding of the car. The team now concludes its Shakedown programme and looks ahead to the season launch and livery reveal on 9 February, followed by pre-season testing in Bahrain in a couple of weeks, before final preparations begin for the opening round of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship in Melbourne on 6-8 March. Fernando Alonso: “It's always a special moment driving a new car for the first time, especially at the start of a new regulation cycle. Over the years I've experienced many changes in Formula One, and you quickly get a sense of the direction the car is taking. We completed a solid programme with strong mileage, which is the main priority at this stage. It's still very early days and we have a lot of work still to do before we head to Melbourne in March.” Lance Stroll: “It was a huge effort across the team to get the car ready, so I really appreciate all the hard work that went into getting us on track. My running was limited, but it was good to get behind the wheel for the first time and start to get a feel for the car. I look forward to getting to Bahrain and driving the car again.” Mike Krack, Chief Trackside Officer, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team: “Getting a new car on track for the first time is always an important step. Bringing the AMR26 to life here in Barcelona has taken a big effort, both back at the AMR Technology Campus and from the team working trackside. I want to thank everyone across the team for the work that's gone into getting us to this point. Having both drivers in the car and providing valuable feedback and data is an important part of our pre-season preparations. It's also been helpful as we continue building our working relationships with new works partners, including Honda. We'll now take what we've learned and keep developing the AMR26 ahead of Bahrain testing.” Presidential Announcement of Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, Jan. 30, 2026) – An executive order signed today by President Donald J. Trump directed the White House Task Force on Celebrating America's 250th Birthday to designate a race route through Washington, D.C. and the National Mall for the purposes of conducting an NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on August 21-23, 2026. The event will recognize the historic milestone of America's independence in addition to celebrating the unparalleled tradition and legacy of America's motorsports industry. “INDYCAR racing is a source of pride and entertainment for our Nation, which is why I am pleased to announce the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.” said President Trump via the executive order. “This race, the first motor race ever to be held in our Nation's capital near the National Mall, will showcase the majesty of our great city as drivers navigate a track around our iconic national monuments in celebration of America's 250th birthday.” The full executive order can be viewed here: Executive Orders – The White House. The event will be administered by INDYCAR in coordination with the taskforce, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of the Interior, and Washington, D.C.'s Executive Office of the Mayor. “For over one hundred years, American INDYCAR racing has set the pace for motorsports,” President Trump continued. “With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.” For more than a century, INDYCAR has hosted the iconic Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on the Sunday before Memorial Day, annually the world's largest single-day spectator sporting event. “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” serves as a singular and powerful tribute to the United States Armed Forces, with a crowd of more than 350,000 people gathering to show respect and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our military heroes. Legends of INDYCAR span multiple generations from racing greats like Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt to the stars of today like four-time SERIES champion Alex Palou and two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden. “President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we're grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle,” said Roger Penske. “This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country's independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation, and excellence that powers motorsports across America.” “Freedom doesn't ring, it revs! INDYCAR is about competition and pushing limits — the same things that have always defined America,” said United States Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy. “There's no better place to celebrate our 250th anniversary than bringing that energy to the nation's capital and showcasing Washington, D.C. to the world.” "The Department of the Interior is proud to help bring the historic Freedom 250 Grand Prix to Washington, D.C. to showcase our treasured public spaces through a monumental event that captures the America spirit in the heart of our nation's capital," said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. "Like the sport of racing itself, this administration, under President Donald J. Trump, is moving at record speed to make life better for all Americans and ensure that the United States marks its 250th birthday with the celebration that it deserves. Start your engines, America!" “Soon-to-be the home of every major sports franchise, Washington, D.C. is the undisputed Sports Capital,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “But we don't stop there and work to attract major events. That's why I am thrilled to welcome the Freedom 250 to the Nation's Capital this August. The race weekend will rev up the economic engine of D.C. by filling our hotels and restaurants and by showing visitors, residents and the sports world that there's no better city, people and backdrop for major sports events. I invite all sports fans to come enjoy the Freedom 250 and all that Washington, D.C. has to offer.”

Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar salutes all the veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. Thank you for your service and sacrifices. It is a pleasure to welcome Yeremi Hykel to the podcast! A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Yeremi first appeared on Reality TV on The Amazing Race 35, which aired in 2023. He partnered with his brother, Navy veteran Liam, who had been estranged for years. The first leg saw the duo start racing from the Hollywood sign and finish in Thailand, where they placed eighth out of 13. The duo was nearly eliminated in Vietnam, but fortunately, it was a non-elimination leg. Sadly, Yeremi and Liam were sent home after the Race took them to India. Throughout the competition, Yeremi completed two roadblocks, while his brother completed three challenges. Two years later, Yeremi headed to The Challenge to compete on the long-running Reality TV competition's forty-first season, Vets vs. New Threats. Yeremi made a name for himself when he completed the opening challenge – climbing the mountain to get to the Challenge House. Throughout the season, Yeremi showcased his leadership abilities and became one of the New Threats' strongest leaders in the house. He won both the “Cyclone” daily challenge with fellow New Threat Sydney Segal and the “Running Man” daily challenge with partner Aviv Bruno. Author Tom Hapgood is a US military BRAT aka the child of a parent or parents serving full-time in the United States Armed Forces. He talks about his 5 years in West Germany during the Cold War. He shares the challenges of moving every few years, adapting to new cultures, and the rich tapestry of friendships formed along the way. The term "BRAT" often carries a negative connotation, but Tom sheds light on its origins, suggesting a more nuanced history tied to military families. The stories shared reveal how these children navigated their identities as they lived in foreign lands. We reflect on the Cold War's influence and tensions, yet amidst the challenges, there were countless adventures and opportunities for cultural exchange that enriched their lives. From navigating new cities to forming lifelong friendships, the life of a military BRAT is filled with unique experiences that shape who they become.
