Debuting on June 24th, 1941, A Date With Judy was the teenage girl's answer to Archie Andrews and The Aldrich Family. Billed as the adventures of the “lovable teenage girl who's close to all our hearts,” it initially starred Ann Gillis in a summer replacement for Bob Hope. While filming at Paramount, Hope met Gillis and introduced her to his radio sponsors. They cast her in the adolescent comedy being prepared by writer Aleen Leslie. Leslie had come up through the Hollywood ranks working for Columbia Pictures, and writing for Deanna Durbin, Mickey Rooney, and Henry Aldrich films. Leslie wrote the lead with her friend Helen Mack in mind, but Mack was pregnant and declined. After the birth of her child. Mack came in as producer-director, the only woman to do so in a prime-time role at the time. In three summertime runs, two for Hope and one for Eddie Cantor, Judy was played by Gillis, Joan Lorring, and finally Louise Erickson. Erickson also played Marjorie on The Great Gildersleeve. In January of 1944, Judy was given a full-time run and Erickson held the role for the next six years. In July of 1944 the show was pulling a rating of 9.1 on NBC. On Independence Day at 8:30PM, an overheard election mixup causes comedic embarrassment for Judy's father.
In 1944's Christmas Holiday, Deanna Durbin and Gene Kelly, both known for their achievements in musical comedies, were cast against type as a lounge singer with a sordid past and her abusive husband respectively. Audiences seemed to be ready for the change as Christmas Holiday, directed by stylist Robert Siodmak and based on a W. Somerset Maugham story, quickly became one of Universal's most successful films of 1944. Dan and Vicky discuss the offbeat and melancholy Christmas movie along with their feelings on some recently seen movies and TV including The First Omen, Monkey Man, Zone of Interest, Beau is Afraid and Netflix's Dick Wolf docu-series Homicide New York. Thos chats to Melanie Gall, biographer of Deanna Durbin, about her one woman show “Ingenue: Deanna Durbin, Judy Garland and the Golden Age of Hollywood” to learn how “Winnipeg's Sweetheart”, Deanna Durbin, became the biggest star of musical films in the 1930s, surpassing even her occasional co-star, Judy Garland, but also how she deliberately disappeared completely from view – and from memory.
Only one more left after this one for the season I think.

We've got a special guest today, folks! Musician and author Melanie Gall joins us to talk about movie star Deanna Durbin. In the 1930s and '40s, one movie star above all had captured Winnipeggers hearts: Deanna Durbin. Born Edna Mae Durbin at Winnipeg's Grace Hospital, Durbin skyrocketed to fame in the late 1930s with a stint on Eddie Cantor's radio program Texico Town and the film Three Smart Girls. She'd go on to save Universal Studios from bankruptcy and become the highest paid woman in America - before abruptly retiring to France.
WPMT's Tuesday premiere is here! It's time to go behind the scenes with reporter character “John Matthews” for “Up in Central Park” featuring music by Sigmund Romberg, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, book by Herbert Fields and Dorothy Fields and starring Deanna Durbin and Dick Haymes with Charles Irwin, as heard live at the Screen Guild Theatre on June 28, 1948! Tune in at 1 PM CT on any major podcast platforms.
For this Universal 1938 episode, we begin by again discussing the relationship between comedy, tragedy, and horror, courtesy of John M. Stahl's Letter of Introduction, featuring famed ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his alter ego, Charlie McCarthy. Edgar rises and Adolphe Menjou falls in a kind of Tolstoyan double plot. Then we watch as Universal's new banker overlords do their best to launch another young female star with the initials DD. French actress Danielle Darrieux (later of Max Ophüls masterpieces) plays a real weirdo in The Rage of Paris, a risqué romantic comedy co-starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and directed by Deanna Durbin specialist Henry Koster, and we give our opinions on whether we think this attempt to launch her in America was a success. Tis the season for Christmas movies on the B-Movie Cast! First up, Mary, Nic, & Juan check out the 1944, vaguely Christmas-related, film noir: “Christmas Holiday”. This film is set at Christmas… and that's about it. However, it's got Deanna Durbin & Gene Kelly, so who cares! So get ready for a very noir Christmas
In this Studios Year by Year episode, we witness the changing of the guard at Universal in 1936, in which James Whale's Show Boat brings down the Laemmle Era, and Deanna Durbin's first feature, Three Smart Girls, ushers in the Bankers Era. We find good things to say about both, but we're not gonna lie, most of the episode is devoted to Edna Ferber/Kern and Hammerstein/Whale's Show Boat and its combination of quiet radicalism, family melodrama, and musical entertainment. Musical entertainment is just about the only link between the two films. Dave and Elise marvel at 14-year-old Durbin's terrifying energy and confidence, and Elise is very happy to see 29-year-old Ray Milland, even if he probably shouldn't be quite so happy to see 18-year-old Barbara Read. Jeremy wrote this book for the TCM collection. He is also author of The Essentials 1 and The Essentials Part 2. Hopefully he will be back in the New Year and we can discuss his choices. Jeremy chose a variety of Christmas movies. Of course the old classics, he also chose some of the more modern Christmas movies. There are lots of tidbits. I enjoyed it thoroughly. He was a lot of fun and he knows his Christmas flicks. We both have the same fave A Christmas Carol, there could be couple you have never heard of so check on TCM or You tube. I have a few that I love that didn't make the book. One I think you should check out is Christmas Holiday. It is on you tube (so far). Jeremy thought it wasn't really a Christmas movie, but it was during Christmas, there were flashbacks, but ultimately about letting go and being free culminating on Christmas night.. Deanna Durbin was great in her only dramatic role, and Gene Kelly was a charming swine. All of Jeremy's choices are great so its a great read and check out those movies. I want to thank Jeremy so much for being my guest. He was fab. This was supposed to be out last week, but it was beyond my control. Most of all I want to thank my listeners. You all are the best. Jennifer Fleeger‘s Mismatched Women: The Siren’s Song Through the Machine (Oxford University Press, 2014) tells the story of women in film and their representation as aberrations, but also as moments of emancipation and agency. Fleeger’s book discusses exceptional voices such as Kate Smith, known as the First Lady of Radio; Deanna Durbin, whose soprano voice allegedly saved Universal Studios from bankruptcy, Susan Boyle the woman who shocked Britain’s Got Talent jury and public to the point of tears, amongst many others. Fleeger’s approach broadens the traditionally cinematic context of feminist psychoanalytic film theory to account for literary, animated, televisual, and virtual influences.
