In this episode, we dig into the life of a fast jet pilot with Paul Heasman. Paul speaks candidly about Crew Resource Management (CRM), the line between training and instinct, OODA loops, decision making, and much more. Paul joined the Air Force in 1999 and went through training through various aircraft types. Paul then flew the Tornado F3 from RAF Leeming for three years before being selected for instructional duties. He progressed to RAF Valley on Anglesey, spending eleven years flying the Hawk Trainer, initially the Hawk T1 before being selected to bring the Hawk T2 into service. It was at this time Paul became interested in human performance and became an RAF aircrew performance coach. Recently, with Draken, Paul became a CAA CRM instructor for the business and facilitated CRM discussions as part of aircrew routine training. In this week's podcast Alastair Beer talks about the role of the RAF Mountain Rescue; how it differs from the civilian Mountain Rescue and what capabilities it has. He highlights the dangers of air crash sites and the hazards that face responders who are tasked to air accidents. Key points from this podcast: If it is a military aircraft always assume it is armed and with a civilian aircraft consider the ballistic recovery systems therefore always assume you are working under a high level of risk at any aircraft crash site. Only enter the crash sites if you have to save life or for recognition of life extinct for anything else stay out of the crash site.  If you have to go into the site consider preservation of evidence while working on scene A crash site will be a really confusing, hazardous and unpleasant place and if first on scene you could be dealing with multiple casualties which is a very difficult situation to find yourself in. Take a moment, take a deep breath and have a think about the scene and make sure you are safe before approaching. Quickly declare a Major incidence and accurately report a METHANE report about the incident back to ambulance control before you start to treat patients, especially if you are first on scene. Resources related to this podcast: Guidance publication for Aircraft Post Crash Management – https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/919973/Guidance_Pub_version_High_amend.pdf About Alastair Alastair joined the RAF regiment in Oct 1999. Initially based at RAF Waddington as Ground Based Air Defence. In this role he was deployed to Oman, Kuwait and the Falkland Islands. Following that tour he spent 6 years at RAF Leeming in the Force Protection role in which he completed several tours of Iraq and Afghanistan and Belize. In 2010 he was posted to RAF Kinloss and Lossiemouth as a Force Protection instructor and his final tour with the RAF Regiment was as the machine gun specialist on 51 Squadron at Lossiemouth. His RAF Mountain Rescue career started in 2003 at RAF Leeming as a part time member of the team and continued following his posting to RAF Kinloss. Throughout this period his MRT and RAF Regiment careers ran in parallel. He was released from the RAF Regiment in 2017 and posted as Permanent Staff to RAF Lossiemouth MRT as the Medical Co-ordinator. In 2018 he became the Deputy Team Leader. His time in MRT has seen him conduct training across the UK, Norway, Europe and Hong Kong. Operational callouts have been very varied from responding to a helicopter crash in Devon through to recovering the bodies of 2 climbers on Scotland's most northerly Munro, Ben Hope.

Claire Willsher is the founder of DR ME, a qualified PE teacher, and wife of an RAF officer. Having worked in numerous schools throughout the UK and Europe she is passionate about educating people on the benefits of whole-body health. DR ME runs interactive workshops focusing on 4 key areas: Diet, Resilience, Mind, and Exercise (DR ME). People can become their own doctor with the implementation of small, yet significant changes using the knowledge gained at DR ME workshops to increase their resistance to disease. DR ME presents workshops in both education and corporate environments. Having seen first hand her enthusiasm for health spread to children, parents and staff alike, Claire believes that DR ME workshops encourage people and those around them to make informed choices, thus transforming them into the best they can possibly be. She's also involved in setting up a co-working hub in RAF Leeming. It's something that's very important for her and stems from her research into mental health and how a lack of connections and face to face time impacts our loneliness with a risk of causing depression and anxiety. By having a collective place to work, we can all reduce the loneliness and can help re-create a sense of purpose. Claire is also a founding member of the InDependent Spouses in Business Facebook group and was one of the very first participants of the Virtual Networking events that were rolled out this summer. This episode is a great insight into year one of running a business and how important health is to running your own company. I really hope you enjoy it!

The newly formed Bedale & RAF Leeming branch of the RAF Association is looking for new members. The RAF Association offers friendship, help and support to the ‘RAF family’. This includes current and former serving RAF personnel, their spouses, widows, widowers and other dependants. From something as simple as a visit to chat, to financial support in a time of need, the Association is there to help. The majority of this support is delivered by local Branch members, on a voluntary basis. By becoming a member you can enjoy getting together with like-minded people and take part in a range of social events, from raising funds in support of the annual Wings Week Appeal to helping a veteran in his or her garden. Branch Chairman, Wing Commander Chris Thorpe, said: “I’d urge anyone who is serving or who has served in the RAF, or indeed anyone who is interested in supporting the Association, to come along to one of our meetings to see what we’re all about. It’s free to visit us and we’re always keen to meet new people.” There are many former RAF personnel and their families living in this part of North Yorkshire. This new branch, which includes many serving personnel, offers the opportunity for current and former RAF members to work together for the benefit of others.
