Fresh off the heels of Saturday Night Live's 50th Anniversary celebration, we have a special treat for you this week, as the one and only John Farley takes a seat in The Wayback! (Check out his documentary "Meet Me Where I Am").  In this episode, John takes us back to the Farley brothers' childhood home in Madison, Wisconsin, during the 70s and 80s, where he and brother Chris Farley would get into all kinds of trouble.  John gets nostalgic about CB radios, getting kicked out of boarding school, and making VHS "naughty tapes."  John also reminisces about summer vacations at the lake, and Red Arrow sleepaway camp, where he and Chris would get their start in improv. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the seventy-sixth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Command Sergeant Major of Ops Group (CMOG), CSM Michael Hall. Today's guest is MSG William Kocken, which is the Operations Sergeant Major for 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment.   The 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment of the Red Arrow Brigade, 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) of the Wisconsin Army National Guard, has a distinguished history of service. Known for its long-standing tradition of excellence in both state and national missions, the battalion's motto, Les Terribles—meaning “The Terrible Ones”—reflects its fierce combat reputation earned during World War I. The Red Arrow Brigade, of which the 2-127th is a part, derives its name from its ability to pierce enemy lines during both world wars, symbolizing the unit's strength and perseverance. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Black Hats” (the BCT's call-sign is “Red Arrow”), the nickname of “Wisconsin Volunteers,” and the brigade's motto of “Forward.”   In this episode we discuss the lessons learned at the battalion echelon for conducting large scale combat operations across multiple domains, particularly in logistics, communications, and standards of discipline. One of the key takeaways was the challenge of maintaining efficient communication across dispersed units, especially during large-scale combat operations (LSCO). Unlike Active Duty forces, the Army National Guard (ARNG) faces unique difficulties in ensuring smooth, real-time communication, which became a critical area for improvement. Additionally, the exercise exposed gaps in logistical sustainment, as ARNG units struggled with coordinating supplies, equipment, and personnel over extended operations. This highlighted the need for more robust logistical planning and the importance of developing a deeper understanding of how to sustain operations in high-intensity environments.   Best practices that emerged from the rotation included a renewed emphasis on “brilliance in the basics” and reinforcing standards and discipline. The importance of mastering fundamental soldiering skills, such as maintaining noise and light discipline, digging proper fighting positions, and ensuring basic field craft, became apparent. Leaders realized that gaps in these areas could have serious consequences in LSCO, where the margin for error is small. The exercise also demonstrated that success depends on rigorous preparation and adhering to the most basic tasks, which in turn allows units to perform better in more complex and dynamic scenarios. Commanders stressed the importance of repetitive training in these foundational areas to ensure that soldiers can respond effectively in high-pressure situations and adapt to modern battlefield demands.   Part of S02 “If I Would Have Only Known” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. MAVGEEKS: A Military Aircraft Obsession

It's the 60th anniversary year of the RAF's Red Arrows aerobatics team, and with the commemorations taking in our Gini's far-flung Canada, it felt only right that we celebrate them in style. Gini and Jamie were lucky enough to catch up with current Red 6 Flight Lieutenant Stuart Roberts and Red 9 Flight Lieutenant Patrick ‘Paddy' Kershaw about the privilege of donning the red overalls and making their three years with the team count. They also caught up with Wing Commander Stewart Campbell who was, at the time of recording, OC 617 Squadron - “The Dambusters” (!) - about his time with the Reds ten years ago, flying as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations and what he's been up to since. Finally, we hear a brief word from the original Red Arrow himself, Red 6 Henry Prince, whom we sadly lost in August of this year. We want to hear your aviation tale! Get in touch via mavgeeks@bfbs.com. Also, feel free to leave us a glowing review on your favourite podcast platform. We are very excited to have singer/songwriter Christian Lopez in the studio as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Rolling Stone says.. "as popularity in Americana rises, Lopez can connect the dots for many young listeners..” Christian Lopez is not merely riding the wave of Americana Music, the West Virginia native is bending it to its knees. With the will of his voice and the stomp of a steady beat, Christian Lopez is pioneering his own brand of Folk Rock. Hailed as an Americana wunderkind when he burst onto the scene in 2015, Lopez recorded his debut album, produced by multi-Grammy winning producer, Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton) when he was just 18. Followed up by his critically acclaimed sophomore album, “Red Arrow” in 2017, featuring guests like Vince Gill and Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids). Since then, Lopez has released 2 albums including “The Other Side” (2021) his latest release “Magdalena” (June 2023) which he wrote and recorded while living in the tiny town of Magdalena, New Mexico. We chat with Christian about: Playing music from the age of 5. How a visiting Dude Ranch as a kid gave him the bug to become a musician. What was it inside of him that made him give up a full college scholarship in pursuit of a dream. Ways he connects back to friends and family back home after being on the road for extended periods of time. The process of using angst as a creative tool in songwriting. Dropping barriers inside oneself to find your own unique voice. His experiences in working with major labels as a young man. Pushing through doubts from those around you. Jared Goff was responsible for four other Detroit turnovers, in total, the Lions had 5 turnovers in the second half.  Prescott missed the previous five games with a fractured right thumb. Detroit fell to 1-5 last place in the NFL.  During the game, Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was ruled out in the first half because of a concussion. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Last Night Arizona Cardinals 42, New Orleans Saints 34 Cardinals 42, Saints 34 – Cardinals use two pick-6s in first half to down Saints 42-34 Marco Wilson and Isaiah Simmons scored touchdowns on two pick-6s late in the first half and used that stunning change in momentum to lift the Arizona Cardinals over the New Orleans Saints 42-34. The Cardinals snapped an eight-game home losing streak that was the franchise’s longest since 1958. The game was tied at 14 when Saints quarterback Andy Dalton threw the game-changing interceptions on consecutive drives that were barely a minute apart just before halftime. Sunday Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys, 1:00 p.m.  Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans, 1:00 p.m. Monday Chicago Bears at New England Patriots, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Cowboys QB Prescott says injury absence ending against Lions Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he will start Sunday at home against the Detroit Lions. Prescott’s return would end a five-game absence after he fractured his right thumb in a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. Dallas went 4-1 with backup Cooper Rush, starting with a four-game winning streak. Prescott says he had a full workload as the first-team QB in practice. Dallas players are crediting Rush for keeping the club in contention. They also see Prescott as the “life source” of the team’s offense. NFL – 49ers acquire RB Christian McCaffrey from Panthers The San Francisco 49ers have acquired star running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers for a haul of draft picks. The Panthers announced the deal that sends McCaffrey back to the Bay Area where he starred in college at Stanford in Thursday night. They said it will be finalized when McCaffrey passes a physical. A person familiar with the deal said on condition of anonymity that the Panthers will receive picks in the second, third and fourth rounds of the 2023 draft, as well as a fifth-rounder in 2024. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – League Championship Series (best of 7) Yesterday Houston Astros 3, New York Yankees 2                                            (HOU leads 2-0) Astros 3, Yankees 2 – Bregman HR as Valdez, Astros edge Yankees 3-2, lead ALCS 2-0 Alex Bregman hit an early three-run homer, Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings and the Houston Astros edged the New York Yankees 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge just missed a two-run homer in the eighth when his drive was caught just in front of the short wall by right fielder Kyle Tucker. The ball would’ve landed in the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium, Statcast showed — with the roof open at Minute Maid Park, the wind might’ve knocked down Judge’s bid. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. A night after Justin Verlander fanned 11 to begin the best-of-seven series, Bregman’s third-inning homer was all the offense Houston needed. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. Tonight San Diego (Musgrove 10-7) at Philadelphia (Suarez 10-7), 7:37 p.m.      (Series tied 1-1) NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards, 7:00 p.m. San Antonio Spurs at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. NBA – AP source: Pistons’ Rob Murphy on leave due to investigation A person familiar with the situation said Detroit Pistons assistant general manager Rob Murphy was put on leave due to an investigation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. ESPN reported that Murphy is facing an allegation of workplace misconduct involving a former female employee. Murphy was promoted to assistant general manager in June after serving as president and general manager of the G League’s Motor City Cruise. The former Syracuse and Kent State assistant was Eastern Michigan’s basketball coach from 2011 to 2021. The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, met for six hours. They worked on a plan to triple the number of playoff teams from four to 12 for the 2024 season. Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock says the work is ‘not finished’ and that time is running short. NCAAFB – Concussion lawsuit against NCAA could be first to reach jury A Los Angeles jury could be the first in the U.S. to decide whether the NCAA failed to protect college football players from repeated blows to the head that cause serious brain injuries. A jury was seated Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom in the case of a former University of Southern California linebacker who had significant brain damage when he died at age 49. The widow of Matt Gee, who was on the 1990 Rose Bowl winning squad, is suing the NCAA for wrongful death. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee’s death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. Hundreds of similar cases are pending against the NCAA. NCAAVB – Wisconsin female athletes notify police over private photos University of Wisconsin police are investigating how private photos and video of members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team got circulated publicly without their consent. Wisconsin’s athletic department says players contacted campus police after they became aware the photos had been made public. The volleyball players aren’t being investigated for wrongdoing. University of Wisconsin police spokesman Marc Lovicott confirmed the investigation, but details are not being disclosed. Olympics – Olympic officials talk with 10 bidders for 2036 Summer Games The International Olympic Committee says it’s in talks with 10 potential candidates to host a future Summer Games. Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics has been expressed by officials in countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia and Qatar. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper did not identify any of the 10 projects addressing the Association of National Olympic Committees meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The 2036 Olympics is the next Summer Games available to be awarded in a mostly secretive process led by the IOC. It seeks to avoid both expensive public campaigning and a vote contested by multiple candidates. The Commanders did just enough to come away with their first win since beating Jacksonville in the opener and handed the Bears (2-4) their third straight loss. Washington caught a huge break when it punted on fourth down at its 36. Jones had trouble tracking the ball, then let it hit off his arms. Holmes recovered it in a big pile at the 6, and Robinson scored two plays later.  Chicago came up empty on three drives inside the Washington 10 during an ugly 12-7 loss. Led by Fields and Khalil Herbert, the Bears rushed for 238 yards and outgained the Commanders 392-214 overall. But Chicago still dropped its third straight game. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – Wild Card Round – Best of three Today Wild Card Playoffs – Best of Three Tampa Bay (McClanahan 12-8) at Cleveland (Bieber 13-8), 12:07 p.m. Philadelphia (Wheeler 12-7) at St. Louis (Quintana 6-7), 2:07 p.m. Seattle (Castillo 8-6) at Toronto (Manoah 16-7), 4:07 p.m. San Diego (Darvish 16-8) at New York (Scherzer 11-5), 8:07 p.m. MLB – Detroit Tigers wrap disappointing season with new executive The Detroit Tigers head into the offseason after finishing 66-96 this year, the third-worst record in the American League. The franchise spent a lot of money entering the season to bolster the rotation and lineup and didn’t get much for it. Shortstop Javier Báez, signed to a $140 million contract, hit .238 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 147 strikeouts. Left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez also struggled. The Tigers did play .500 baseball over the final two months and that included wininng nine of 10 games at one point. NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Last Night Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 9 – OT Colts 12, Broncos 9 – OT – Colts grind out 12-9 win over Broncos in injury-filled game Stephon Gilmore batted away Russell Wilson’s pass to Courtland Sutton in the end zone on fourth-and-1 from the 5 to give the Indianapolis Colts a 12-9 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Gilmore also intercepted Wilson’s pass in the fourth quarter to help set up Chase McLauglin’s tying field goal. McLauglin connected from 47 yards 4:10 into overtime to give the Colts (2-2-1) the lead in the first game in NFL history that pitted quarterbacks with at least four Pro Bowl appearances each, but it featured zero touchdowns. The Broncos (2-3) decided against a tying chip-shot field goal by Brandon McManus, and Wilson lined up in the shotgun next to running back Melvin Gordon, then threw incomplete over the middle. Sunday Detroit Lions at New England Patriots, 1:00 p.m. Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions, Patriots looking to bounce back from 1-3 starts Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for the Detroit Lions this season, but it hasn’t translated into many victories. The New England Patriots are reeling for a different reason and could use a victory just as bad as the teams prepare to match up this week. Through four weeks, the Lions are averaging an NFL-high 35 points and a league-high 437 yards per game. But even 45 points was wasn’t enough to beat Seattle at Ford Field last week to drop Detroit to 1-3. New England is also 1-3 and is looking at the prospect of having its third starting quarterback in three weeks with Mac Jones nursing a tender ankle and Brian Hoyer going on injured reserve with a concussion . If they’re out, rookie Bailey Zappe will make his first career start. NFL – Justin Fields, mired Bears offense looking for positives Although Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and receiver Darnell Mooney connected on a big pass play last week for the first time, they’re not expecting an immediate breakthrough in the team’s offense. Heading into a game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears remain focused on the process of building their overall attack and not simply evaluating Fields, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says. Still, with an offense last in passing and next-to-last in yardage, and only two touchdowns in their last 32 possessions, the Bears (2-2) have work to do to be competitive on a weekly basis. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Minnesota Wild 4, Chicago Blackhawks 1 Tonight Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 6 Tonight – Big Ten Nebraska at Rutgers, 7:00 p.m. Saturday (4) Michigan at Indiana, 12:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan, 12:00 p.m. Ball State at Central Michigan, 3:30 p.m. (3) Ohio Sta te at Michigan State, 4:00 p.m. (16) BYU vs. Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m.                at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas NCAAFB – Wolverines look to start another win streak over Indiana Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh knows the score. A 24-game winning streak over Indiana ended when the Wolverines last traveled to Bloomington. Coach Tom Allen’s teams had given Harbaugh all sorts of headaches even before the game two years ago. Now, though, with No. 4 Michigan pursuing a second straight Big Ten title and what it hopes will be a second consecutive playoff berth, the Wolverines want to turn up the pressure when they visit the Hoosiers on Saturday. NCAAFB – No. 3 Ohio State heavy favorite at Michigan State No. 3 Ohio State faces its first road test of the season Saturday at struggling Michigan State. The heavily favored Buckeyes are on a roll, averaging 55.7 points per game in their last four contests. They have won six straight games against Michigan State and 15 of the last 18 matchups between the two schools. The Spartans have lost three consecutive games, including 27-13 last week at Maryland. It’s Mel Tucker’s longest losing streak during his three-year tenure as Michigan State’s head coach. NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New Orleans Pelicans, 8:00 p.m. Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NBA – Warriors’ Draymond Green apologizes for fight with teammate Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers says star forward Draymond Green apologized to the team a day after fighting with teammate Jordan Poole during practice. Poole practiced Thursday while Green didn’t. Myers said any potential discipline would be handled internally. Myers said he doesn’t anticipate Green missing any games for Wednesday’s altercation. The Athletic first reported the scuffle, saying Green struck Poole. Myers said “space is good” regarding Green not practicing and going home after he addressed the team. Green was previously suspended for one game in 2018 after a confrontation with teammate Kevin Durant.   WNBA – Brittney Griner at ‘weakest moment’ in Russia, her wife says WNBA star Brittney Griner is at her “absolute weakest moment in life right now” as she faces a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. That’s according to her wife, Cherelle Griner, who told “CBS Mornings” in an interview aired Thursday that Brittney Griner is afraid of being forgotten by the U.S. Brittney Griner was convicted Aug. 4 after Russian police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Her defense lawyers said Griner had been prescribed cannabis for pain. Cherelle Griner said she fears her wife could be moved to a Russia labor camp. Golf – LIV – World ranking rejects last-minute LIV Golf bid for points The Official World Golf Ranking won’t be awarding points to LIV Golf events this year. The ranking board has denied a request to immediately add Saudi-funded LIV Golf to the MENA Tour schedule. The OWGR says the MENA Tour did not give it sufficient notice and there would not be time to finish the review ahead of the LIV Golf Invitational in Bangkok that starts Friday or the event in Saudi Arabia next week. There are only two LIV Golf events left so some players will be out of the top 50 and find a tough road back to the majors. NFL – National Football League – Week 4 Last Night Cincinnati Bengals 27, Miami Dolphins 15 Bengals 27, Dolphins 15 – Bengals top Miami 27-15 after injured Tagovailoa carted off Joe Burrow tossed a late 2-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Hurst to seal a 27-15 win for the Cincinnati Bengals over Miami. The game was marred by the horrific sight of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa being taken off on a stretcher. Tagovailoa was chased down and slammed to the turf by Cincinnati’s Josh Tupou with about six minutes left in the first half. He was taken to a hospital with reported head and neck injuries. Vonn Bell’s interception of backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with three minutes left in the game set up the Bengals’ final drive. Sunday Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions, 1:00 p.m.          Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Chicago Bears at New York Giants, 1:00 p.m. Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions host Seahawks in matchup of teams aiming for .500 mark The Detroit Lions and Seattle Mariners are matching up Sunday and the winner will be .500 again this season. Seattle’s Rashaad Penny had a career-high 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 51-29 Week 17 win last year against the Lions. Detroit running back Jamaal Williams is expected to play a larger role with D’Andre Swift slowed by ankle and shoulder injuries. The Lions are favored to beat Seattle by 4 1/2 points, the most points they have been favored by since being a six-point favorite in 2019 against the New York Giants. NFL – Bears’ defense refocuses on tackling to stop Giants’ Barkley After struggling initially with tackling, the Chicago Bears’ run defense surfaced in the second half of Sunday’s 23-20 win over Houston and is now looking to continue the success against Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants. The Bears had given up 203 rushing yards to Green Bay and struggled in the first half against Houston before holding the Texans to 22 rushing yards in the second half. Safety Eddie Jackson called stopping Barkley a challenge for the Bears defense, which has sometimes had four rookies on the field this season. NCAAFB – College Football Saturday (4) Michigan at Iowa, 12:00 p.m.                             News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 11:00 UMass at Eastern Michigan, 2:00 p.m. Michigan State at Maryland, 3:30 p.m.                     Superhits 103.7 Cosy-Fm 2:00 Central Michigan at Toledo, 3:30 p.m. New Hampshire at Western Michigan, 6:00 p.m. Notre Dame is off this week NCAAFB – No. 4 Michigan to visit Iowa for Big Ten title game rematch No. 4 Michigan goes on the road for the first time this season when it plays Iowa. Coach Jim Harbaugh knows all too well how difficult it is to play at Kinnick Stadium. He called it the place where top-five teams go to die. Iowa has won five of its last six home games against top-five opponents. That includes a 14-13 victory over Harbaugh’s second-ranked Wolverines in 2016. The game is a sellout. The game matches a Michigan offense scoring 50 points per game and an Iowa defense allowing fewer than six. NCAAFB – Struggling Spartans try to get back on track at Maryland Maryland is coming off its first loss of the season, but it was a credible performance in a seven-point defeat at Michigan. The Terrapins have three of their next four games at home and can really earn some legitimacy with a good October. They host Michigan State on Saturday. The Spartans are coming off consecutive losses to Washington and Minnesota. They could use a win this week or a disappointing season will start to feel inevitable. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 10, Kansas City Royals 3 Chicago White Sox 4, Minnesota Twins 3 Chicago Cubs 2, Philadelphia Phillies 0 Tigers 10, Royals 3 – Castro, Báez homer, Tigers sweep Royals 10-3, escape cellar Willi Castro and Javy Báez homered to lead Detroit over the Kansas City Royals 10-3 for a three-game sweep that moved the Tigers out of last place in the AL Central. Detroit (63-92) has won six straight, matching its season high and ensuring the Tigers will not lose 100 games. Detroit went 10-9 this year against the Royals (63-93), who dropped into the division cellar. Kansas City stranded 11 runners, raising its two-day total to 24. and went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Eduardo Rodriguez allowed five hits and four walks in 6 2/3 shutout innings. White Sox 4, Twins 3 – White Sox stop 8-game losing streak with 4-3 win vs. Twins Mark Payton had two hits and an RBI and scored the go-ahead run for Chicago in the eighth inning in a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox stopped an eight-game losing streak that had tied their season high. Liam Hendriks pitched a perfect ninth for his 34th save as the White Sox moved one game ahead of the Twins for second place in the AL Central. Cleveland has clinched the division. Both the White Sox and Twins were eliminated from the wild card race the day before. Cubs 2, Phillies 0 – Phillies lose 5th straight, Cubs sweep season series 6-0 Struggling to end an 11-year playoff drought, the slumping Phillies lost their fifth straight game Thursday as the Chicago Cubs swept the season series from Philadelphia with a 2-0 victory. Philadelphia remained a half-game ahead of Milwaukee for the final National League wild card when the Brewers lost 4-2 at home to Miami in the opener of a four-game series. Seeking their first postseason berth since 2011, the Phillies have dropped the first three games of a season-ending 10-game trip and 10 of 13 overall since peaking at a season-best 80-62. Today Cincinnati (Ashcraft 5-4) at Chicago Cubs (Sampson 3-5), 2:20 p.m. Minnesota (Ryan 12-8) at Detroit (Alexander 4-10), 7:10 p.m.              WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Chicago White Sox (Martin 2-5) at San Diego (Darvish 16-7), 9:40 p.m. MLB – Heyward plans to keep on playing, even if not with Cubs Jason Heyward plans to play next season, even if it won’t be with the Chicago Cubs. Heyward hasn’t been in a game since June 24 because of right knee inflammation. The 33-year-old outfielder hit .204 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 137 at-bats, and he has one season left in a $184 million, eight-year contract, a deal with a $22 million salary next season. Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer said last month that Heyward won’t be with Chicago next year. A two-time Gold Glove winner, Heyward has a .257 average, 159 homers and 641 RBIs. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Tonight Washington at Detroit, 7:30 p.m. Saturday Detroit at Chicago, 8:30 p.m. Sunday Minnesota at Chicago, 7:30 p.m. Golf – PGA/LIV – PGA Tour countersuit accuses LIV Golf of unfair tactics The PGA Tour is on the attack in its legal battle with Saudi-funded LIV Golf. The tour responded to the amended antitrust lawsuit by LIV Golf. The tour also filed a counterclaim seeking damages against the rival league. The tour claims LIV Golf has used Saudi Arabian funds to lure top players and has misled them by claiming the tour could not enforce its regulations. The tour has suspended players who have signed with LIV Golf for not having releases to play competing events. A judge in August ruled against three players seeking an emergency stay to play on tour. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Chicago White Sox 8, Cleveland Guardians 2 Tigers and Cubs were off White Sox 8, Guardians 2 – White Sox pound 5 homers, rock Central-leading Guardians 8-2 Elvis Andrus hit one of Chicago’s five home runs off rookie Hunter Gaddis and the White Sox cut into Cleveland’s lead in the AL Central with an 8-2 win. Andrus connected in the fifth inning off Gaddis, who became the first Cleveland pitcher to allow five homers in a game since Luis Tiant in 1969. On Wednesday, Andrus raised some eyebrows by saying he expected the first-place Guardians “to crumble the closer we get.” Chicago trimmed Cleveland’s lead to three. Gavin Sheets started Chicago’s homer barrage with a two-run shot in the second. The Guardians had their winning streak stopped at six. Today Colorado (Márquez 8-10) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 3-7), 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox (Giolito 10-9) at Detroit (Manning 2-2), 7:10 p.m. Cosy-FM 6:50- WSJM after HSFB NFL – National Football League – Week 2 Last Night Kansas City Chiefs 27, Los Angeles Chargers 24 Chiefs 27, Chargers 24 – Chiefs rally past Chargers 27-24 in early AFC West showdown Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, rookie Jaylen Watson returned an interception 99 yards for the go-ahead fourth-quarter score, and the Kansas City Chiefs held on to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 27-24. Mahomes finished with 235 yards passing, and Jerick McKinnon and Justin Watson hauled in the TD passes for the Chiefs. Kansas City fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter and spent most of the game playing catch-up. Justin Herbert finished with 334 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Chargers. The Chiefs improved to 2-0 and lead the AFC West. The Fighting Irish are hoping their new quarterback can help them dig out of this early-season hole. Drew Pyne is expected to replace the injured Tyler Buchner on Saturday against California. But what would help Notre Dame most is if Pyne can provide a jump-start to a sputtering offense that has put the team’s biggest goals in peril. NCAAFB – J.J. McCarthy will get the start again for Michigan No. 4 Michigan hosts Connecticut on Saturday, when the J.J. McCarthy era will officially begin. Coach Jim Harbaugh named the sophomore the starter, making Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara a backup. The situation reminds Harbaugh of what he went through with the San Francisco 49ers. A year after Alex Smith led San Francisco to the NFC championship game, he was replaced by Colin Kaepernick. The Huskies will start freshman quarterback Zion Turner at Michigan Stadium. Tennis – Federer, Serena retire; tennis moves on to Alcaraz, Swiatek The timing of it all hardly could be more symbolic: All within a span of two weeks, Serena Williams plays what is believed to be her last match at age 40, Roger Federer announces he’ll be retiring at 41, Iga Swiatek wins her third Grand Slam title at 21, and Carlos Alcaraz gets his first at 19. After so much handwringing in recent years about what would become of tennis once transcendent superstars such as Williams and Federer leave the game, the sport does seem to be in good hands as it prepares to move on. Federer said Thursday he will exit after the Laver Cup next week. Williams lost in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sept. 2. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Last Night Connecticut Sun 105, Las Vegas Aces 76                                    (LV leads 2-1) Sun 105, Aces 76 – Sun stay alive, beat Aces 105-76 in Game 3 of WNBA Finals Alyssa Thomas had the first triple-double in WNBA Finals history to help the Connecticut Sun stave off elimination by beating the Las Vegas Aces 105-76 in Game 3. Thomas had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists for the Sun, who have now won all four of their elimination games in these playoffs, topping Dallas on the road in the first round and beating Chicago in Games 4 and 5 to close out that series. Game 4 of this best-of-five series is Sunday in Connecticut. Jackie Young scored 22 points and A’ja Wilson added 19 for the Aces. WNBA – Griner, Whelan families to meet Biden amid US-Russia talks President Joe Biden plans to meet at the White House on Friday with the families of WNBA star Brittney Griner and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan, both of whom remain jailed in Russia. The meetings are to be the first in-person encounter between Biden and the families and come amid sustained but so far unsuccessful efforts by the administration to secure the two Americans’ release. The administration said in July that it had made a “substantial proposal” to get them home, but Russia has not yet settled on a deal with the U.S. NHL – NHL, players remain committed to hosting Feb. 2024 World Cup The NHL and players remain committed to hosting a World Cup of Hockey in February 2024 even as they work through some unexpected logistical challenges. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, the Players’ Association’s Mathieu Schneider and staffs are working daily to attempt to overcome hurdles related to staging part of the tournament in Europe. The plan is to have eight teams involved in the first international tournament featuring the top players in the world since the World Cup in 2016. The league has not participated in the past two Olympics. A decision has not yet been made about what to do about Russia amid the country’s war in Ukraine. Judge asked to approve fund for U-Michigan doc’s victims Attorneys are asking a judge to approve creation of a settlement fund for sexual-assault victims of a University of Michigan sports doctor, a key step in a $490 million deal with more than 1,000 people. The settlement between the school and victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson was announced in January, but there’s been no public activity. A request was filed this week under seal in Detroit federal court. It seeks the establishment of a “survivors settlement fund” and the appointment of someone to oversee the fund. Attorney Richard Schulte says he can’t comment on the filing. But he says “more concrete news” will come soon. Anderson died in 2008 after working at the university for nearly 40 years. Olympics – IOC committee visits sites for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles The International Olympic Committee’s coordination commission made its first in-person visit to Los Angeles to inspect proposed venues for the 2028 Games. Chicago was ahead 3-2 when Alejo Lopez’s liner off Mark Leiter Jr. slipped between rookie right fielder Seiya Suzuki and center fielder Rafael Ortega. The ball rolled to the wall for a triple, allowing Nick Senzel to score from first to tie it. Lopez trotted home on when India lined a single to left, his third hit of the game. Suzuki doubled and scored in the sixth and put Chicago in front with a solo shot in the eighth. Alexis Diaz got five outs for the win. Ian Gibaut worked around a hit in the ninth for his first save. Cease (14-6) reached 206 strikeouts for the year, becoming the seventh White Sox pitcher with multiple 200-strikeout seasons. Von Miller had two of Buffalo’s seven sacks as the Bills opened the NFL’s 103rd season by overcoming three first-half turnovers and running away with a blowout win. Chairman George McCaskey said the team would not seek public funding to build the stadium itself if the Bears complete the purchase of a 326-acre site in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and decide to move from Soldier Field. But they would need help to complete the rest of a multibillion dollar project. The Bears envision restaurants, retail, office space, housing, a hotel, fitness center, new parks, ponds and open areas. McCaskey said the project could take more than 10 years to complete. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of 5) Last Night Connecticut Sun 72, Chicago Sky 63                                          (CT Wins 3-2) Sun 72, Sky 63 – Sun rally in 4th, beat Sky 72-63 to advance to WNBA Finals Jonquel Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds and the Connecticut Sun overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, beating the Chicago Sky 72-63 in the decisive fifth game of the semifinal series and advancing to the WNBA Finals. Yes, it gives the Fighting Irish a chance to rebound from last week’s season-opening loss at Ohio State. But it’s also a chance for Freeman to get his first career win in his home debut. The Thundering Herd come to town with one of the nation’s most prolific ground games. Marshall ran for more than 300 yards in last week’s rout of FCS foe Norfolk State. But they’ll face a much stiffer challenge against Notre Dame’s defense. NCAAFB – CFP committee digs into feasibility of early expansion to 12 The College Football Playoff management committee gathered for 4 ½ hours at a hotel in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. It was the conference commissioners first meeting since their bosses voted last week to expand the CFP from four to 12 teams. The goal is to sort through a myriad of issues and have a new format in place for the 2024 season. It’s unclear whether there is still time to accomplish that. First and foremost, they need to figure out where and when 11 playoff games can be played. Availability of venues and television time slots could ultimately determine whether early expansion is possible. Tennis – US Open – Swiatek, Jabeur will meet in 1st US Open final for both Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur will face each other in the U.S. Open women’s final. Tunisia’s Jabeur reached her second consecutive Grand Slam title match by beating Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows on Thursday night. The No. 5-seeded Jabeur was the runner-up at Wimbledon in July. She took full advantage of a shaky performance by first-time major semifinalist Garcia. The No. 1-ranked Swiatek grabbed the last four games to eliminate No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal. Poland’s Swiatek already owns two trophies from the French Open’s red clay but never had been past the fourth round on New York’s hard courts. Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe offers hope for present and future of US men’s tennis Frances Tiafoe calls his run to the U.S. Open semifinals ‘a Cinderella story.’ He is a 24-year-old from Maryland who took up tennis because his father was a janitor at a junior training center, a player who never won a match past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament until now, who owns one career ATP title and a sub-.500 career record, and whose ranking ranged from 24 to 74 over the past two seasons. Tiafoe’s tale also is a significant step forward for American men’s tennis and could help grow the sport in the future, too. Tiafoe is the first man from the U.S. to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 16 years. And he could become the first Black man from the U.S. in a major final since MaliVai Washington was the runner-up at Wimbledon in more than a quarter-century ago. Sports events in Britain called off following death of queen Several sporting events in Britain have been called off as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96. Organizers of the BMW PGA Championship golf event reacted to the announcement of the queen’s death by immediately suspending play with many players still out on the course at Wentworth. Friday’s play in the second test between England and South Africa at the Oval will not take place and horse racing meetings in Britain were suspended on Thursday night and Friday. Fridays games in the English Football League will not take place. Miller, Lamoureux twins elected to US Hockey Hall of Fame Longtime NHL and former Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller and Olympic gold medal-winning women’s hockey stars Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando headline the 2022 class of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Three-time Paralympic gold medal-winning sled hockey goalie Steve Cash and late USA Hockey executive Jim Johannson were also elected. Miller backstopped the U.S. to the final of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and has the most NHL victories of any American-born goalie. The Lamoureux twins helped the U.S. beat Canada for gold at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang with Lamoureux-Davidson scoring the shootout winner. Johannson was general manager of the men’s team that year before dying unexpectedly at age 53 a few weeks before the start of the tournament. NASCAR – Kyle Busch still seeking on-track success, job for 2023 It didn’t seem much could still go wrong this year for Kyle Busch until his engine blew with 22 laps remaining in NASCAR’s opening playoff race. Busch had dominated at Darlington Raceway and led a race-high 155 laps for what should have been a much needed victory. He’s had a crummy season and the 10-race playoff stretch is probably the final days of his career with Joe Gibbs Racing. Instead of a victory that would have automatically advanced him into the second round, Busch finished 30th and remained 11th in the playoff standings. Even worse, he has no idea when he’ll have a job secured for 2023. That’s when the team would decide if it makes sense financially to pursue the project. He participated in voluntary and mandatory offseason workouts. But with negotiations at a standstill, things took a heated turn once training camp started. He opted to “hold in” and then went public with a trade request while accusing Poles of negotiating in bad faith. They were eliminated by the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova 7-6 (5), 6-4 on Thursday night. Arthur Ashe Stadium had never hosted a first-round doubles match until this one featuring two American sisters who have combined to claim 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles but were partnering for the first time since the 2018 French Open. The 17-year-old Noskova was making her Grand Slam doubles debut. The 37-year-old Hradecka won two major doubles trophies with a different partner. Tennis – US Open – Nadal hits nose with racket, tops Fognini Rafael Nadal has come back to win at the U.S. Open after cutting himself on the bridge of his nose when his racket bounced off the court and smacked him in the face against Fabio Fognini.  Nadal was bleeding and took a medical timeout. A trainer put a bandage on his nose.  The 22-time Grand Slam champion won the second-round match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.  They started Thursday night and finished after midnight.  Play resumed after about a five-minute delay when Nadal hurt himself on the first point of a game with Nadal leading 3-0 in the fourth set. NBA – AP source: Cavaliers acquiring All-Star G Mitchell from Jazz A person familiar with the trade tells AP the Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to acquire All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell in a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NBA still has to approve the trade. The person says Cleveland is sending guard Collin Sexton, forward Lauri Markkanen and rookie guard Ochai Agbaji along with three unprotected first-round picks to the Jazz. Mitchell is one of the league’s premiere scorers and his acquisition could put the Cavs among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. NASCAR – NASCAR drivers feeling the hits more in Next Gen car The jolts are more jarring and the effects linger for longer for NASCAR drivers in the Next Gen car’s debut season. Racers feel they have taken harder hits in accidents this season than in the past. NASCAR crash analysis agrees, and there have been discussions with drivers about how to improve safety. The issue came to the forefront earlier this summer when Kurt Busch crashed in qualifying at Pocono. He suffered a concussion and still has not been cleared to race. Busch gave up his playoff spot because of his condition. NBAGL – New rules: G League will set a target score for OT games Overtime in the G League this season will be a race to seven points. The schedule for the G League’s 22nd season has been was released, with the 50-game slate for teams beginning on Nov. 4 and ending on March 25. And the league is making some changes, with a switch to a “target score” ending for its overtime games among the most significant. The first team to score seven points in the OT period wins, and that extra session will be untimed. MILB – Minor league unionization getting interest from players Players on the Single-A Tampa Tarpons have been talking individually about efforts to unionize minor league players and the idea is gaining momentum. Centerfielder Spencer Jones says it is something that definitely interests him. Tampa reliever Ryan Anderson says it makes a lot of sense because it could lead to better benefits down the line. Signed cards from 30% of minor leaguers in the bargaining unit would allow filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a union authorization election, which would be decided by majority vote. The Royals had scored 24 runs in their previous two games. Chicago (64-66) won for the first time under bench coach Miguel Cairo, who served his second game as acting manager while Tony La Russa is on indefinite leave for an unspecified health issue. Tonight Seattle (Gilbert 10-5) at Detroit (Rodriguez 3-3), 1:10 p.m.                WSJM/WCSY 12:50 Kansas City (Mengden 0-0) at Chicago White Sox (Cueto 6-6), 2:10 p.m. Cubs are off MLB – Exhibition games start Feb 24 as MLB hopes for normal spring Major League Baseball’s exhibition season will start Feb. 24 with a pair of games in Arizona. All 30 teams are scheduled to play Feb. 25 as games start in Florida. Spring training was cut short in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and workouts were restricted the following year due to coronavirus protocols and stadium capacity was limited. Spring training workouts in 2022 were to have started on Feb. 16 but were delayed until March 11 by a lockout. MLB – WSox manager La Russa out indefinitely with health issue Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa is out indefinitely because of an unspecified health issue. The 77-year-old La Russa missed Tuesday night’s 9-7 loss to Kansas City on the recommendation of his doctors. The team says the Hall of Famer is scheduled to undergo additional testing in Arizona with his personal physicians “over the coming days.” Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue to serve as acting manager while La Russa is out. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of five) Tonight Chicago Sky 85, Connecticut Sun 77                                 (Series tied 1-1) Las Vegas Aces 78, Seattle Storm 73                                (Series tied 1-1) Sky 85, Sun 77 – Parker scores 22, Sky beat Sun 85-77 to even the series Candace Parker scored 22 points and the Chicago Sky evened the semifinal series with an 85-77 win over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA playoffs. Chicago coach James Wade said pregame that Chicago was “going to make shots” Wednesday after a lackluster 35.3% shooting performance in Game 1. The Sky responded by hitting six of 10 shots to open the game, and finished the night 32 of 63 (50.8%). NCAAFB – College Football – Week 1 Tonight Central Michigan at (12) Oklahoma State, 7:00 p.m. NCAAFB – No. 12 Oklahoma State opens with Central Michigan Oklahoma State reached the Big 12 championship game last season and beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. The 12th-ranked Cowboys believe they can accomplish at least that much this season with veteran quarterback Spencer Sanders leading the way. Oklahoma State opens with Central Michigan on Thursday night. The Cowboys can’t afford to slip early, and they remember an upset loss to the Chippewas in 2016 that provided an unexpected blemish on a 10-3 season. Central Michigan returns last year’s national rushing leader, Lew Nichols III, from a team that went 9-4 and won the Sun Bowl. NCAAFB – AP sources: Presidents meeting to discuss CFP expansion The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss expanding the four-team format. The presidents hope to accelerate a process that bogged down last year and re-open the possibility that a new model for crowning champion could be implemented as soon as the 2024 season. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the CFP’s Board of Managers, led by Mississippi State President Mark Keenum, is set to convene by video conference. All the people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the board’s plans were not being made public. NCAAFB – No. 5 Notre Dame faces defensive test against No. 2 Buckeyes No. 5 Notre Dame relishes the Saturday night challenge. It opens the season at No. 2 Ohio State against an offense that led the FBS in total offense and scoring last season and is only expected to get better in C.J. Stroud’s second season as starting quarterback. And if Notre Dame is going to defeat Ohio State for the first time since 1936, first-year coach Marcus Freeman knows what he needs — the defense to come up big against his alma mater. NCAAFB – Born a Buckeye: Ohio State prepared Freeman for Notre Dame Marcus Freeman was born and raised a Buckeye. He played at Ohio State, too, and worked there. Freeman says he wouldn’t be the head coach at Notre Dame at the age of 36 without the time he spent in Columbus, Ohio. Freeman is taking a trip home: The season opener for his fifth-ranked Fighting Irish is Saturday night at No. 2 Ohio State. Freeman’s peers say he’s ready for the challenges that come with being the head coach of Notre Dame. NCAA approves transfer windows and enforcement reforms The NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved changes to transfer rules and several proposals aimed at enforcement reforms. The proposed changes came from the Transformation Committee as part of the first phase of that group’s work. The changes to transfer rules will go into effect immediately. Sport-specific windows will be set during an academic year when athletes would be required to enter their names in the transfer portal to be eligible immediately to compete the following school year. On the enforcement side, the Independent Accountability Resolution Process will be eliminated. The NCAA’s outside enforcement task force to handle complex infractions cases has mostly slowed down the processing of cases. Tennis – US Open – Serena beats No. 2 seed Kontaveit at US Open to reach 3rd Rd Serena Williams has eliminated No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 in the U.S. Open’s second round to ensure that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will play at least one more singles match. The 40-year-old Williams has hinted this will be the last tournament of her illustrious career. Williams missed about a year of action before returning to the tour in late June at Wimbledon. She lost in the first round there and was 1-3 in 2022 entering the U.S. Open, where she is 2-0 so far this week. She beat Danka Kovinic in the first round before following that up against Kontaveit on Wednesday night in front of a full house at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tennis – US Open – Tiger Woods shows up to support Serena Williams at US Open Serena Williams credits Tiger Woods with offering advice before she made her recent comeback from a year-long injury absence. Woods sat courtside at the U.S. Open on Wednesday night, throwing uppercuts in the stands to cheer Williams on to victory. Williams says Woods is "one of the reasons I’m here.” Woods was in Williams’ guest box at sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium, two seats over from her sister, Venus. NFL – Bears claim OL Alex Leatherwood off waivers from Las Vegas The Chicago Bears have claimed offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood off waivers a day after the 2021 first-round draft pick was let go by the Las Vegas Raiders. Leatherwood was the No. 17 overall pick last year. The Alabama product struggled at right tackle before being moved to guard after four games. He had difficulties inside, too, and dropped on the depth chart this summer before Las Vegas let him go. NFL – Bears’ Smith says he’s focused on season, not contract talks Chicago Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith insists his focus is on the upcoming season and not his long-term future after a contract standoff with the team ended with no new deal. Smith says there won’t be any more negotiations with new general manager Ryan Poles on an extension between now and the start of the season. He also says he’s not focusing on whether he will re-sign with Chicago after the season. Smith hoped to strike a new deal, with the contract he signed after the Bears drafted him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2018 set to expire following this season. NFL – Lawyers bash Goodell-led arbitration in NFL racial bias suit Lawyers for three Black NFL coaches alleging racial bias by the league took aim directly at Commissioner Roger Goodell in their latest arguments against arbitrating a dispute they say belongs before a jury. In papers filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, the lawyers wrote that arbitration, which would be led by Goodell, would allow “unconscionably biased one-sided ‘kangaroo courts’" to decide the outcome of the lawsuit filed in February. They say Goodell could not be fair in overseeing and ruling on the dispute as to whether the league engages in systemic discrimination. They cited the hundreds of millions of dollars he earns from teams and his public statement that the suit is without merit. NFL – Gruden ‘ashamed’ about emails that cost him his job Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden says he is “ashamed” about his old offensive emails that cost him his job and hopes to get another chance in football. Gruden spoke publicly about the affair at the Little Rock Touchdown Club for the first time since he resigned as coach of the Raiders last October. The resignation followed the publication by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of emails he had sent from 2011 to 2018 that contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. Red Arrow Camp offers a traditional, single-session summer camp experience for boys ages 7 to 16. Located on the shores of Trout Lake in Wisconsin's Northwoods, we provide campers with an unmatched opportunity to challenge themselves, develop confidence, and learn new skills while having the summer of their lives.Built on 100-year-old traditions, we offer our 100 campers an escape from modern-day stressors. At Red Arrow, our boys unplug, leaving behind their technology-driven routines. Televisions are replaced by pine trees, sports fields, and the inviting, glimmering expanse of Trout Lake. Laptops and iPhones are abandoned in favor of ping pong paddles and canoe paddles, and video games give way to real-life adventures in the wilderness of the Northwoods. At Red Arrow, we encourage our campers to take our philosophy to heart: “Don't wait to be a great man, be a great boy.” At the end of the summer, our campers leave Red Arrow having experienced the wonder of nature, the satisfaction of hard work, and the magic of enduring friendships.
