Europe's biggest budget airline cancelled hundreds of flights earlier this month due to a strike by French air-traffic controllers. Most of those were so-called "overflights" that weren't landing or taking off in France. As Ryanair's communications director, Jade Kirwan, has been telling me, the airline is demanding that flights using a country's airspace simply to reach the final destination should be protected in the event of a strike. Peter Burke TD, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, has today commenced a two-day Enterprise Ireland investment mission, focused on strengthening ties with some of the largest Irish-owned global businesses that are headquartered in Ireland. This investment mission will see Minister Burke visiting and engaging with a number of Ireland's homegrown multinational companies at their offices here in Ireland. Discussions will focus on exploring new opportunities for further investment in Ireland, addressing global opportunities and challenges, and potential areas for further collaboration with Ireland's entrepreneurial and research ecosystems. This is the first such investment mission from Enterprise Ireland, led by the agency's new Global Irish Business Unit which was established last year to focus on stimulating investment and deepening relations with global Irish businesses who are making significant contributions to the Irish economy. Over the course of the two days, a number of Enterprise Ireland client companies are set to provide the Minister with updates on business activities, including Ryanair, Kingspan, ICON PLC, Uniphar and Smurfit Westrock. This two-day investment mission demonstrates a commitment to nurturing indigenous global businesses, and provides a platform for significant discussions with the leadership teams from these companies around potential opportunities to expand their operations here. A key objective of the mission is to encourage more value add-activity by these global leaders in Ireland, and to help connect them further with the various aspects of the Irish entrepreneurial and research ecosystems, maximising their contribution to Ireland's economy This strategic investment mission comes as Enterprise Ireland last week confirmed that exports from Irish-owned companies supported by the agency reached a record €36.75bn in 2024, up 7% on the year prior. Employment at companies supported by Enterprise Ireland also reached record levels last year, with 234,454 people employed in these businesses around the country. Enterprise Ireland is committed to supporting companies at all stages of growth, including companies on their scaling journey. In our recently published new five-year strategy, 'Delivering for Ireland, Leading Globally (2025-2029)', Enterprise Ireland outlined an ambition of increasing the number of world-leading Irish companies, with targets of; 275,000 employed in Enterprise Ireland supported companies by the end of 2029, €50 billion in export sales, and having 150 large Irish exporting companies of more than 250 employees supported by Enterprise Ireland by the end of the five-year strategy. Speaking this morning as he commenced this investment mission, Minister Burke said; "Nurturing the development of homegrown Irish success stories is of huge importance to this government, and this investment mission provides a unique opportunity to engage directly with some of Ireland's top business leaders, to identify new opportunities for growth, and to understand more about challenges they are facing. Engaging and meeting directly with entrepreneurs and leaders is hugely important in terms of understanding challenges facing the Irish enterprise base, and I am delighted to lead this important investment mission." 40 years ago this week, at 8.30am on July 8, 1985, a 15-seater aircraft with a full complement of passengers took off from Waterford airport to London Gatwick on the inaugural flight of a new Irish airline called Ryanair. Air travel, and in some ways Ireland itself, would never be the same again. Fast forward four decades and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't travelled with Ryanair and, let's be honest, complained about them. Ryanair's decision to create 35 new jobs at Shannon has been hailed as a major vote of confidence for the airport's future. The airline is expanding its cabin crew at the Clare base in order to facilitate its enhanced Winter schedule. The $400m investment announced last month has seen a fourth aircraft added to Shannon, along with three new routes to Madeira, Lapland and Madrid. Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says it's an exciting new chapter for the region.

Despite a commitment in the Program for Government to work towards lifting the passenger cap at Dublin Airport as soon as possible, the cap remains in place and is set to be breached again this year. Michael O'Leary, Group CEO of Ryanair joined Ivan to discuss this and more.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has said EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyden should step down “if she's not willing to reform Europe's failed ATC service”. Michael spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning.

She's encouraging me to keep going in my travels and is a professor in Southern California. Quick fire FAQ: The FAQ for today is:  Do you find that air travel dries your sinuses? Do you get dry and scratchy throats afterward? Yes, it happens. Let's talk about how to rid yourself of this in advance.    How to avoid the dryness of airline flights? The answer:   My solution is Saline Nasal Spray. I bought the 1.5-oz size for $4.00, which will last my entire trip. Before you get dry sinuses, squirt some in each nostril and then relax as it goes to work. What are the ingredients? Water, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, benzyl alcohol, sodium phosphate, and benzalkonium chloride. Water and salt. There are three ways to use it: Squeeze twice in each nostril, and it delivers a spray, a stream, and a drop upside down. How many days will you want to use the Eurail pass for trains and ferries? Plan the trip, including seat fees and senior discounts with these countries, and suggest other places that would be a good stopping point or worth seeing. I am a solo woman in my prime.
