Berlin, Detroit, Birmingham and, of course, Sarajevo. Bosnian-built and -bred Sev Dah may be a Swedish expat, but the Balkan blackness clings strongly to the bleak percussions and rigidly uneasy synthetics that unwillingly fuse into his strongly individual take on techno. Authentically purveying the pulsations of the nakedly throbbing and ugly world, far away from Starbucks and H&M. Signed to respected labels such as Random Island, Mote-Evolver and Kaiser's KSR, he quickly gnawed his way into the scene's core of DJs and producers. Sev is even managing new projects on his own label Proletarijat since 2016. Like a rabid mongrel, since 1998 he has been chewing and belching new bastard beats that are aching to scream out. Consequently there's a steaming and steady stream of vinyl releases coming. With influences ranging from Stigmata and Mills to Master Reese and Petar Dundov, Sev Dah is a versatile but headstrong DJ that can gently ease a thumb in at midnight or fervently thrust it down the hatch at peak time. Wendy Lake of Petley on Random Island says not much has happened to repair roads, stages and sheds since windstorm in January + MUN's Pratt post-doc fellow Julia Stryker is hoping to start a tall ship festival in NL.
Many deaf people communicate through American Sign Language, or ASL. But when interpreters are hard to come by, communication can be very difficult. That's why Random Island Academy has created community boards to allow more and more of their students to learn ASL. Mallory Melay is the Instructional Resource Teacher.
Bosnian-born, Sweden-based producer and jockey Sev Dah has been carving a niche truly personal and distinctive into techno's growingly standardized on and off-stage realm. Boss of his own imprint, Proletarijat, with releases for Mote-Evolver, Random Island or K S R under his belt, Sev has been pushing wares both entrancingly hi-NRG (a nod to the early Schranz heroes) and ruggedly abrasive. The result is an effervescing mishmash of rabid uptempo drives, screwed melodies and fiery rhythmic grids, ready to leave all ravers knocked askew.
Part One: It Came From Outer Space There's no shortage of Newfoundland and Labrador stories connected to outer space. There are Martian craters named for Gander, Nain and Nutak, local airports were alternate space shuttle landing sites for NASA, and there are plenty of unidentified flying object reports in the province including the much discussed 'Gander Incident' and the Random Island sighting that inspired a stamp from Canada Post. My favourite Newfoundland space-ish story isn't any of these. It happened in October of 1936; a major meteor shower was seen on the southern and eastern portions of the island and it terrified people. On the podcast we explore it in a story called “The Day The Sky Fell.” Part Two: With Violet With Violet is an alt-pop band from St. John's, NL. They are winning fans with catchy hooks, nuanced songwriting and an energy has to be heard to be believed. In 2021 they released their debut album, Long Story Short, which included the popular track “With Money.' They followed that up with two Christmas singles — ‘December Parade (Bow on Top)‘ and ‘Countdown (New Year's Song)'— which, if you follow Product of Newfoundland playlists, you've definitely heard. This year, they expanded their canon with two new EPs — Saturday Nights In and Your Sunday Best, the former of which gave us the track ‘Gravity' and its dancing-astronaut filled video. Band members Pete and Spencer FitzGerald are my guests on this episode. We chatted about Your Sunday Best and the ‘Gravity' music video. We also talked abut Addictions Anonymous (a book of poetry written by Pete and Spencer), and Pete's solo music including his Halloween track ‘The Ghost Goes Boo' (which you can hear right now on my Songs for a Spooky Season playlist). With Violet Links With Violet (withvioletband.com) With Violet on Apple Music With Violet on Spotify With Violet on YouTube Addictions Anonymous book by Spencer Crawford FitzGerald and P.A. MacDonald Pete's solo music (peteymacd.com) Trummp the Musical (CBC article) Part Three: Monstrous Things In the third instalment of ‘Monstrous Things' we look at a hungry sea monster reported in Bonne Bay in 1943. Was it a 'real' monster or a known creature? You decide! A woman from Random Island is seeking answers as her husband has been left in limbo waiting for lung surgery for three years. Beverley Lambert and her husband have faced a long road since he was diagnosed with lung fibrosis in 2013. Initially, she says his condition could be treated with medication but in 2018 they were told that he would need a double lung transplant. It's been three years and operation still hasn't taken place due to delays, the pandemic, and most recently their lung specialist leaving the province. Recently, Lambert called the clinic in Toronto to find out that they haven't received any information about her husband since an initial delay in 2019. Lambert speaks to VOCM's Richard Duggan about the toll the process has taken.
The son of Johnny Cash's longtime manager talks about never-before-seen images of the singer's 1961 moose hunt in Newfoundland, Canadian Red Cross seeks volunteers in Central and Western Newfoundland, Central Health offers mental health webinars tp help keep older adults happy and productive, and an artist's image of a 1978 UFO sighting will be featured on a Canadian silver coin.
Welcome to Decomposed Radio #031. For this week's show, we're super psyched to welcome one of my favourite artists, all the way from Norrkoping in Sweden, "Inter Gritty." He's the man behind the incredible "Random Island" label, which specialises in limited edition, vinyl only, wind-swept machine music, and a big fan of the early Bleep 'n' Bass techno sound, much of which was pioneered from legendary labels from the Sheffield area such as "Warp" records. So there's a really cool connection there, and even tracks on Inter Gritty EP's with titles like "Kelham" and the "Sheffield Mix" He's appeared at leading venues such as Berghain and Tresor with both DJ and live hardwear sets, as well as plenty of other appearances throughout Europe, and in his native Sweden, where you can catch him playing in Stockholm this October. He's provided a phenomenal mix of full-blooded Detroit techno for the show, featuring old skool and new skool tracks, along with some unreleased Inter Gritty gems. It's a real journey and a bit of a techno education, so turn it up, and fully immerse yourself in Decomposed Radio #031, with Inter Gritty.
This week we have not one, but two mixes for your listening pleasure, to celebrate a very special weekend of house, techno and climbing down in Dorset! First up we have the Decomposed Radio big boss, "GusN8r" stepping up to the plate. Starting out with some dark, groovy techno and tech house, and building up to some seriously tough, full gauge, trippy techno, this is an example of the type of set you'd expect to hear at nights such as Sheffield Techno Institute and the annual "Works" party in Sheffield in December. Featuring favourite tracks from artists such as Arnaud le Texier, Robert Hood, and Dimi Angelis, and labels such as "Minus", "DEMENT3D Records" and also Swedish vinyl on label "Random Island." If that's not enough, tomorrow (Friday) we'll also be releasing an extra bonus mix with some more summery vibes from the mysterious "Freeborn Man" to get everyone heading down South for the weekend in the mood, stay tuned for more details.......
