Mike Grinser made his name as one half of Manmade Mastering, alongside Tim Xavier. In addition, Grinser also works at Berlin's renowned Dubplates & Mastering. Grinser was a rock fan before being turned onto electronic music in clubs. Intrigued, he sought to understand how this music was created, learning to DJ before moving to production. Sitting in mastering sessions for his own records, he acquired a deep interest in the technical side. Here, Grinser shares details on what goes into getting great sound.
In Exhumed I.IV we can hear the balance between dancefloor orientation and subtle experimentation that clearly pulls influence from both Detroit and UK styles of techno. A heavy, textured broken beat is accompanied by a lamenting atmosphere, in the style that the artist has become known for. This same combination is used across the four-track EP but to varying ends, displaying an impressive diversity of moods and ideas that belies its aesthetic cohesion. While some tracks strike a more somber tone, others are more concerned with reverberating space and detailed percussion. Exhumed Tapes I is out on April 24th. The release will be limited to 50 hand-numbered physical copies, distributed by Readymade from Berlin. It was mastered by Tim Xavier at Man Made Mastering.

After years spent paying his dues in Milan’s historic clubs, from Old Fashion to Trattoria Toscana, in unauthorized centri sociali or ‘squat clubs’, fashion shows and radio work, he turned his attention to production. The discography is varied and rich in international collaborations, starting with releases for Multivitamins (UK), then for the PRO-TEZ (Russia), Defected (Uk), The dub (It) and Vibe Me Records (Es). In 2009, Giuseppe creates Apparel Music – a ‘kitchen’ of artists from all over the planet. Among the many partnerships are long-established collaborations in Russia with the duo SCSI-9 and in Germany with major artists like Lopazz, Elon, Chris Wood, Tom Clark, Ekkohaus as well as Delano Smith, Moodymanc, Domu, Tuccillo, Ali Kuru, Yapacc, Casio Casino, Sarp Yilmaz, Huxley, Lula Circus, Roy Gilles, Fog, Gavin Herlihy and the list goes on. That's what you'll need for my set recorded at Villa Stuermer. That I would play so long for the birthday of a very dear friend in the Villa Sturmer came surprisingly. Anyway, such a long set has been far ago for me. But that's exactly what I love most of all! And so it was a fantastic pleasure for me to play until just before the end of the evening. Surrounded by and in the midst of very great friends, to make music for them, just was so beautiful. How they were with me and with me in the music, how they followed me into it and went on that journey together with me... above all, that they let me do this and gave me the place for this is a really special honor to me! In addition, I had worked nicely with manual work on the record players using timecode vinyl; the possibility to touch music genuinely creates a vast amount of joy. All this energy together made this evening indescribably beautiful. Thank you, Stan! Now, splitted into two parts, this is the recording of the complete set. I would love to share it with you... If you would go on that journey with me once again, it would be a huge pleasure to me. - Dive in, do not jump through. Listen ;-) (For the audiophiles among you it must be mentioned, that the mixer there showed some age weakness. So some times some controls crackle and a few times the left or right channel fails for very short moments. Also the low frequencies had to remain a bit below normal, this causes that the overall sound image of the tracks is not balanced in this recording. By the way, the own sound character the recording got through that mixer is interesting.) [DEU] Habt Ihr ein bisschen Zeit? Nur ein wenig, kurze fünf Stunden oder so...? Die werdet Ihr nämlich für mein Set aus der Villa Stürmer brauchen. Dass ich so lange zum Geburtstag eines ganz lieben Freundes in der Villa Stürmer spielen würde, kam überraschend. Überhaupt ist so ein langes Set für mich schon einige Zeit her gewesen. Genau das liebe ich aber am allermeisten! Und so wurde es für mich zu einem fantastischen Genuß bis kurz vor Feierabend zu spielen. Umgeben und inmitten von ganz tollen Freunden, für sie musizieren zu dürfen, war auf den Punkt gebracht wunderschön. Wie sie bei und mit mir in der Musik waren, mir darin folgten und mit mir auf eine gemeinsame Reise gingen - vor allem, dass sie mich ließen und mir hierfür den Platz einräumten, ist mir eine wirklich besondere Ehre! Hinzu kam noch, dass ich schön mit Handarbeit an den Plattenspielern per Timecode-Vinyl gearbeitet hatte; denn die Musik wahrhaftig anfassen können, bereitet unendlich viel Freude. Alles zusammen machte diesen Abend für mich unbeschreiblich schön. Danke, Stan! Dies ist nun in zwei Teilen der Mitschnitt des ganzen Sets. Ich möchte ihn so gerne mit Euch teilen... Wenn Ihr also noch mal mit auf diese Reise gehen würdet, wäre das eine große Freude für mich. - Eintauchen, nicht durchspringen. Lausch!-en ;-) (Für die Audiophilen unter Euch muss leider noch erwähnt werden, dass der dortige Mixer etwas Alterschwäche zeigte. So kratzt ein paar Mal der ein oder andere Regler und wenige Male sind links/rechts-Ausfälle zu hören. Außerdem mussten die Bässe etwas rausgedreht bleiben, wodurch in der Aufnahme das Gesamtklangbild der Tracks nicht ausgeglichen ist. Interessant ist daneben, wie die Aufnahme insgesamt einen eigenen Klangcharakter bekommen hat.) How they were with me and with me in the music, how they followed me into it and went on that journey together with me... above all, that they let me do this and gave me the place for this is a really special honor to me! In addition, I had worked nicely with manual work on the record players using timecode vinyl; the possibility to touch music genuinely creates a vast amount of joy. All this energy together made this evening indescribably beautiful. Thank you, Stan! Now, splitted into two parts, this is the recording of the complete set. I would love to share it with you... If you would go on that journey with me once again, it would be a huge pleasure to me. - Dive in, do not jump through. Listen ;-) (For the audiophiles among you it must be mentioned, that the mixer there showed some age weakness. So some times some controls crackle and a few times the left or right channel fails for very short moments. Also the low frequencies had to remain a bit below normal, this causes that the overall sound image of the tracks is not balanced in this recording. By the way, the own sound character the recording got through that mixer is interesting.) [DEU] Habt Ihr ein bisschen Zeit? Nur ein wenig, kurze fünf Stunden oder so...? Die werdet Ihr nämlich für mein Set aus der Villa Stürmer brauchen. Dass ich so lange zum Geburtstag eines ganz lieben Freundes in der Villa Stürmer spielen würde, kam überraschend. Überhaupt ist so ein langes Set für mich schon einige Zeit her gewesen. Genau das liebe ich aber am allermeisten! Und so wurde es für mich zu einem fantastischen Genuß bis kurz vor Feierabend zu spielen. Umgeben und inmitten von ganz tollen Freunden, für sie musizieren zu dürfen, war auf den Punkt gebracht wunderschön. Wie sie bei und mit mir in der Musik waren, mir darin folgten und mit mir auf eine gemeinsame Reise gingen - vor allem, dass sie mich ließen und mir hierfür den Platz einräumten, ist mir eine wirklich besondere Ehre! Hinzu kam noch, dass ich schön mit Handarbeit an den Plattenspielern per Timecode-Vinyl gearbeitet hatte; denn die Musik wahrhaftig anfassen können, bereitet unendlich viel Freude. Alles zusammen machte diesen Abend für mich unbeschreiblich schön. Danke, Stan! Dies ist nun in zwei Teilen der Mitschnitt des ganzen Sets. Ich möchte ihn so gerne mit Euch teilen... Wenn Ihr also noch mal mit auf diese Reise gehen würdet, wäre das eine große Freude für mich. - Eintauchen, nicht durchspringen. Außerdem mussten die Bässe etwas rausgedreht bleiben, wodurch in der Aufnahme das Gesamtklangbild der Tracks nicht ausgeglichen ist. Interessant ist daneben, wie die Aufnahme insgesamt einen eigenen Klangcharakter bekommen hat.) Apparel Music NYE mix 2K17 powered by @kisk Giuseppe D'Alessandro - aka Kisk - is the owner of Apparel Music, a label based in London but with multi-cultural roots. After years spent paying his dues in Milan’s historic clubs, from Old Fashion to Trattoria Toscana, in unauthorized centri sociali or ‘squat clubs’, fashion shows and radio work, he turned his attention to production. He explored a variety of genres, from trip hop to swing, passing through jungle, West London and Detroit house, to deep house, while never abandoning jazz – the wildest and most impeccable of all - progressively building a digital project. Out of this came the concept of Jazzy, the ability to make jazz and electronic music communicate. This passion is also manifest in the Oneboy project - musical instruments played live to a DJ set. Giuseppe put this project together with writer Tatiana Carelli under the name Taji bpm. Oneboy performed at the 2007 Salone Del Mobile furniture show, at various national festivals and events and on an Italian tour in 2008. Also with Taji he created the Discokit® project, a kind of “sensory stimulation kit” – the dance club becomes ‘takeaway’ and enters the world of art with more than 60 events held over two years. The discography is varied and rich in international collaborations, starting with releases for Multivitamins (UK), then for the PRO-TEZ (Russia), The dub (IT) and Vibe Me Records (ES). By attending the unique underground club of his province ‘Affekt club‘, he meets Alex Dolby, founderand owner of the label ‘Affekt Recordings’. Here he earned the spot as a resident DJ. In addition, he was offered to remixone of his songs, ‘liquid tool’. In this project he designed and built a series of episodes made in stop motion created by himself. Tim Xavier’s passion for music has kept him on the forefront of techno since his first innovative releases on Blueline & Contaminated in Chicago over a decade ago. His career began in Houston in the late 90s, and then on to Chicago, Brooklyn and now Berlin, where he has resided since 2007. He is a veteran to the industry; and his dark, edgy production style has remained uncompromised through the ever-changing genres of techno and house. He is also part owner and mastering/cutting engineer at www.manmademastering.com in Berlin. Xavier’s music has been charted and played by leading artists around the world, and he has worked with many international record labels for the past 14 years. He is also the owner of Face To Face Recordings, which is his new techno label distributed by Intergroove Germany. Tim’s current performances include a mixture of DJing, Live sets and Effects manipulation, carrying out his visions as he sees fit. He creates a unique experience with his maximal sound quality and music selection, in which he combines loops and pieces from his own production. He is regularly on tour and performing across the globe, capturing his audiences with his signature sound. Tim’s relentless devotion to providing cutting edge audio continues to keep him on the forefront of innovative dance music, and as he continues to grow it is apparent that we have still yet to see the best of his work. Transiting between the house and techno, through an affinity of sound, the duo soon aroused the interest of the public playing In major parties and festivals throughout Brazil as Rio Music Conference, Bora Bora World Tour, Paralello Universe, Cachoeira Alta, Soulvision, XXXperience, Chemical Music, Playground, Kaballah and Euphoria.After years of research in musical production and after attending music school Vila Lobos the duo has grown and matured so releasing the first EP Long Road by the renowned label Attary, ranging Tech Attack figured in the top sales site Beatport. Hope you have been enjoying as much as we have! So...our guest in June 2011 is Italian dj and producer Stefano Lotti with a dj set recorded live at the club Alibi in Rome on the 15th of April 2011...it is a belter! Stefano was born in 1984. His great love for electronic music came while he still was very young. In 2002 he began his career as a producer. A few years later he moved from a small town of south Italy to Milan (where he is currently living). Stefano has played in many clubs around the world, and today is appreciated by a lot of people and has collaborations with leading artists of the international electronic scene. His songs have been remixed by famous producers like Akiko Kiyama, Tractile, Mathias Schaffhauser, Matteo Spedicati, Dustin Zahn, Mike Wall, Alessio Mereu. The tracks produced by Stefano are in the playlist of the most important djs in the world (Paco Osuna, Tim Xavier, Joseph Capriati, Francesco Farfa, Xpansul, Mihalis Safras, Len Faki ...). The productions and performances of Stefano Lotti are now one of the most interesting connections between techno and groovy house.

Many up and coming releases here including both her own original version and Miro Pajic's remix of La Locura. La Locura is due out very soon on FVF and also includes a Tim Xavier remix of Look Sharp. Sunshine has been working closely with FVF of late; remixing for Rebekah on the Voices EP and joining the label for their residency, DIP, in London last month. This week's artist is the Croatian Dj and producer Miss Sunshine. She begun her journey on the radio show "Clubhopping" the first "on air" radio show in her area at that time and landed a prime residency at the Oxygen club and later Vega Club in Croatia. Sunshine has worked with some of the industry most renowned artist's like Tom Hades and Whebba and played on festivals such as EXIT, Valkana Beach and Sunrise Festival along with many others.In 2009 she joined "Queens of Minimal Techno" with Viktoria Rebeka hosting techno events across Europe. Over the years Sunshine has built up a varied list of DJs/Producers that she has played with. Another month, another Metroline Limited podcast. February 2010 welcomes Franco Bianco from Dilek Records with a LIVE and a DJ set recorded in Cyprus in 2009. Born in Buenos Aires, Franco Bianco grew up having a lot of contact with the music, making mix tapes for the breaks in the school and sharing a lot of young experiences. Playing vinyl since 1998, he participates in many events in the biggest clubs and radio stations of his natal city. In 2004, he presents himself in one of the most important festivals of Argentina: the Personal Festa, sharing line ups with artists like: Pet Shop Boys, Morrisey, Death in Vegas and Gustavo Ceratti among others Actually he is producing releases, remixes and collaborates with labels such as Multivitamins, Hypercolour, and in the past years, he released on Unfoundsound, Meerestief and Lessizmore. One of the latest Fabric compilations, (the fabric 38, mixed by M.A.N.D.Y) includes his track: Noches de Superaciona as intro. The last three years have been very intense, giving him a new start in his career, with successful releases which were remixed by artists such as Marek Hemmann, Tony Rohr, Bloody Mary, Sarah Goldfarb, Federico Molinari, Seuil and Someone Else. In 2007 he had a huge tour which began in Australia, passed by Egypt, and went through 13 countries. With a total of 32 Live presentations over 4 months, where he shared line ups with Steve Bug, Tiefschwarz, Matthew Johnson, Dominik Eulberg, Marco Carola, and many many more. A new tour was scheduled for 2008 in Europe and Central America, to support the Mola vinyl and Origenes EP. This tour was again a huge experience where he also had the chance to play in new places, such as Lithuania, Poland, Colombia, Dominican Republic and last but not least, the Argentinean edition of the Creamfields Buenos Aires, one of the biggest festivals around the globe. 2008 saw also coming his first EP on Dilek Records, Mola (with remixes of Tony Rohr and Bloody Mary), and it was a total success, still played by Laurent Garnier, Anderson Noise, Ivan Smagghe, Frankie, Andre Crom, Nathan Coles, Tim Xavier, Brothers Vibe, Loco Dice and many others. During 2009, he had many gigs (like the ones in Denmark, Spain, Cyprus, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Mexico), and he started another tour to support the Planchete Lateral EP that had enormous amounts of feedbacks and was already sold out few days after the release date. He also worked a lot in his vinyl label Dilek Records, where we can find artists like Pier Bucci, Alexi Delano and Mathias Schaffnauser amongst others artists of his digital sub label Darek Recordings. At the end of this year, he will go back to Argentina to start another South American tour, so be sure to keep an eye on him.
