How is Delilah's investment in the first radio station she ever set foot in, hometown KDUN-AM in Reedsport, Ore., paying off? What impact has it had on a struggling Pacific Coast town no longer the home of a lumber mill?Delilah shares her thoughts in this second of a special two-part conversation with Jackson Weaver and Keith Samuels, conducted for their "Media Insultants" podcast. Weaver offered excerpts for the RBR+TVBR InFOCUS Podcast, presented by dot.FM, and we are pleased to share them with our audience.A video podcast of this second interview can be found on Vimeo from October 28.
There's no shortage of beautiful beaches on the Oregon coast – especially on the southern coast, home to some of the best sands in the state.Running roughly from Reedsport to the Oregon-California border, the southern Oregon coast features sweeping sand dunes, towering cliffs, tide pools and incredible ocean views. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!Delilah Rene Luke It was on February 15th, 1960 that a little girl was born in Reedsport, Oregon. Her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Luke, named her Delilah Rene. Delilah's family was very involved in music, and just like them, she loved music, too. But soon, she discovered she didn't have a talent for singing. What she could do, though, was talk! When she was in middle school, she became a news reporter for radio station KDUN in her hometown of Reedsport. Over the years, that early start in radio became a great foundation for an amazing career in broadcasting. You can hear Delilah every night from seven to midnight on hundreds of radio stations across the United States. She listens to, and plays songs for people who are celebrating in their lives, and for those who are feeling sad about something. Delilah has eight children, five of them adopted. She knows and cares a lot about children who have been orphaned or abandoned. In 2003, Delilah learned about a very small refugee camp in a country called Ghana on the continent of Africa where tens of thousands of men, women, and children live all crowded together. They had very little food and no fresh water. Quickly, Delilah got a group of people together and started an organization called Point Hope to HELP those people. Soon, with her hard work, determination, and persistence, water wells were drilled nearby, and food and other services started to be provided. On one of her trips to Africa, she bought some nearby land to build an orphanage. Yes, Delilah Rene Luke, the girl who became a radio broadcaster when she was in middle school, grew up to become a very special HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO!Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at http://www.thecharacternetwork.org/Testimonials (www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials) This program, The Beginning of a Famous Hero™ is used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!™ in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment. These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it's just... Support this podcast

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (MAY 21, 2019) Summer in Oregon is special. The rain decreases, and the temperature increases. People like to go outside and do things. In fact, they like to do a lot of things, and some of them are a little unusual. Here are some interesting things to do in June: If you like sports, you might want to attend an old-fashioned ballgame. Hillsboro and Portland each have a baseball team. They are the Hillsboro Hops and the Portland Pickles Do you enjoy drama? Then you might want to visit Ashland, which is home to one of the largest theaters in the country called the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It has several different live theaters offering classical and modern work. For the family, there is nothing more traditional than Portland's annual Rose Festival. There's a parade, a carnival, and many other events. And it's 111 years old! . If the weather gets hot, there's no better place than the Oregon coast. While you're there, check out the sand castle contest in Cannon Beach. Portland Pride is an annual celebration of our LGBTQ community. LGBTQ means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer. The big party is in June with a colorful parade and other attractions. Maybe you want a bird's-eye view of all that surrounds you. You can see beautiful hot air balloons at Tigard's Balloon Festival June 21-23. Also high up in the sky is the summer kite festival in Lincoln City. Bring your own kite to fly or watch others. Did you know that some artists use a chainsaw? It sounds dangerous, but the results are impressive. You can see for yourself at the chainsaw carving contest in Reedsport. And, of course, there's the famous World Naked Bike Ride in Portland June 29. The goal is to raise the visibility of bicycles and public awareness of our dependency on oil. Perhaps best of all: free camping and parking in Oregon State Parks on June 1. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause. Dr. John Telberth talks about Oregon’s Clean Energy Jobs Bill, and other bills, describing what additional protections are needed to fully meet Oregon’s climate goals. Dr. Telberth also describes the carbon impacts from Oregon’s logging industry and the unfair tax subsides they receive.Later (beginning at 31:06), I talked with Douglas County citizens at the “Rally for Transparency” on February 19 at the county courthouse. Lately there has been a rash of complaints against the county commissioners, including the logging at Whistlers Bend Park, the permitting of the Pacific Connector Pipeline that was found illegal, the closing of rural dump sites, the closing of Reedsport services, the closing of county libraries, waiving dump fees for the rich, approving a quarry in a Glide neighborhood over the objections of the citizens and the Planning Commission. Some citizens also asked for transparency on Canyonville’s water problem. Canyonville citizens now have to boil their water due to “turbidity”. Did it come from logging? We need transparency so the cost of clean-up is not bourn by by the citizens. Over 70 people attended this rally, and a few of them will speak us in this podcast. Finally, don't miss the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (PIELC) in Eugene February 28 through March 1. One of the biggest environmental conferences in the world, and it's free and close.PIELC schedule of events: pielc.orgItems referenced in Dr. Talberth's interview:https://sustainable-economy.orghttps://sustainable-economy.org/beyond-cap-and-trade-towards-a-new-green-deal-for-oregon/
#4, Reedsport to North Bend. In September 2018, I rode south along the Pacific Coast from Lincoln City, OR to Crescent City, CA plus a few bonus days in the Redwoods. I put together some audio and photos from along the way. Let me know what you think or ask questions in the comments.
Kat Stone and John Hunter talk about Douglas County Park politics, including the value of the parks, the Parks Master Plan, and the loss of parks like Busenbark. Also discussed are the gun issues in the county, Bolon Island (near Reedsport), and the county’s proposal to circumvent land-use laws by allowing property to be chopped into smaller pieces. Other county parks discussed are Discovery Point in Winchester Bay, and Mildred Kanipe Park near Oakland.John and Kat are two of the directors of Umpqua Watersheds.
