Ok, so things are not looking good for the home team. Powers stripped away, bad guy gloating, racist bad guys with questionable fashion sense...what are we to do? I have an idea, let's talk about something fun like the Portland Rose Festival! Looking at the pictures we chose for this book, you may think that I am crazy. Or you may have met me and know that I am. But that is beside the point. I can do anything I put my mind to, including but not limited to kneeing a giant in the head with my knee. I always forget Rose Festival until it kicks in my door like an aggressive repo man just before summer. It is an annual civic festival held during the month of June in Portland, Oregon. It is organized by the volunteer non-profit Portland Rose Festival Foundation with the purpose of promoting the Portland region. It includes three separate parades, along with a number of other activities, including plant-based crimes. You may be tempted after seeing the beautiful floats covered in flowers and seeds to take a trip up to the Portland International Test Rose Gardens. I highly recommend that you do, as it is a very lovely area and one of my favorite spots in the city. What you should not do is take any cutting implement up to take the roses. It is frowned upon. One of the highlights of the Rose Festival is the choosing of the Royal Court. Each local high school has a contest to determine their princess for the Rose Court, and then a queen is chosen from those young women. It is a pretty neat tradition...but I just remember who was chosen from my school my senior year, and it was a horrible choice.....but I digress. Waterfront Park becomes a giant fun center with carnival games, rides, and stages. It is loud, full of an interesting cross section of the city, and full of the smells of food that will clog your arteries. I do not make it down there enough, but when I do go, I still find it very fun. The prices are insane, but that is what you get. My favorite part of the entire festival is the fireworks. This is usually what kicks everything off. They are held in the Willamette River, which runs through the center of the city. Crowds gather on both sides of the river to watch the show in the air above them. And they rarely, if ever, cause people to become radioactive. Well, I hope you learned something about our wonderful city and it's namesake festival. Come to town to check it out sometime. You can see the art we discussed at our website: https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2024/06/01/avengers-academy-35-final-exam-part-2/ We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. In this episode of the Dive Podcast, guests Dr. Darrell Millner and WW journalist Nigel Jaquiss join the pod to discuss the North/Northeast Neighborhood Housing Strategy, a plan aimed to entice Black residents to return to the Albina neighborhood via low cost/affordable housing. Not to be confused with reparations, some critics consider this strategy a hamfisted olive branch that smells like a newer, glossier racial segregation. Others, however, are singing its praises. Brianna also shares what she learned from WW this week, including details of PGE's attempt to block the Confederated tribes of Grand Ronde from fishing at Willamette Falls, how lazy voters may be keeping an inept Clackamas County Clerk in office, and though we may be stuck in the dystopian horror timeline, at least the Rose Festival is back. See you on the ferris wheel!
The iconic celebration of civic pride, creative expression and just plain fun known as the Portland Rose Festival is back to its full itinerary this year. It's been a part of the cultural life of the area for more than a century. The festival had to be vastly scaled down in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, but has only been canceled twice in its 115 year history. Events include three parades, the Spring Rose Show, fleet week and what's known as CityFair at the Tom McCall Waterfront park, with games, rides, concerts and more. The Rose Festival officially kicks off Friday, May 27. But several events are scheduled for Thursday, including free public performance by the Oregon Symphony. The Rose Festival officially runs through June 11, but many related events are scheduled throughout that month. We learn more about this iconic event from past president Leslie Goodlow, who has been attending and helping organize it since she first moved to the city as a child in the early 1970s.
The Rose of Tralee International Festival has announced a change of venue for the live televised shows this year. An interview with Jeff Curtis, CEO of the Portland Rose Festival foundation, the non-profit producer of the Rose Festival, about the return of the festival and all of the events.
In the last few weeks we've seen bouts of good news regarding the coronavirus, signs that give us hope for the upcoming spring and summer. Earlier in March, President Biden announced that he would direct all states, tribes, and territories to make every adult eligible to be vaccinated no later than May 1. It took some time, but on Wednesday, March 17, Oregon Health Authority announced it would be able to meet the president's timeline. Further, new guidance from OHA has expanded the capacity for indoor and outdoor activities in the state. But even as COVID vaccinations go up and caseloads go down, festivals and other large-crowd events have been playing it safe, and are either changing their formats drastically or not happening at all. Most recently, the Portland Rose Festival, for the second summer in a row, announced it would not host its Grand Floral Parade or City Fair. Typically a huge deal and the historic summer kickoff in Portland, the Rose Festival will again operate on a smaller scale, with virtual and limited in-person events. The announcement has got us thinking about what the future might look like for large-crowd events. For this week's episode of Footnotes, Portland Monthly news editor Julia Silverman spoke with Portland Rose Festival Foundation CEO Jeff Curtis about its decision to forgo its traditional festival and how the coronavirus is shaping other large-crowd events in Oregon.

In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Curtis, the CEO of one of largest festival organisations in the US – Portland Rose Festival, based in the City of Roses Portland Oregon USA.With a festival budget of over $3 million and attendance by over 1.2 million event attendees, I will be exploring with Jeff the topic of FINANACE and how such a large festival remains sustainable and rides out the tough patches. In the early 2000’s the committee, the volunteer non-profit Portland Rose Festival Association, created a strategic plan that challenged traditional thinking and gave the festival a new vision. The plan didn't cut the budget or program elements but raised revenue with new program elements and by investing in core elements, using the festival’s strengths. It also included an aggressive strategy to increase the city government’s support of the festival.

October is the month of the King (or should that be Queen) of the plant world to make themselves known in SA. Roses are the plant that conjure up visions of love, not just through their good looks, but the memories their scent evoke... Long thought by many to be particularly pernickity, difficult to grow and in need of far too much attention, Roses have proven their worth in water scarce gardens around the country. As one of the top Rose breeders in the country, Anja Taschner demystifies the lore of these beauties, and tells us more about the latest Named Rose to come from their stable in honour of Thuli Madonsela. https://www.ludwigsroses.co.za/ click here If you're ready to produce your own podcast, contact the podcast experts at

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (MAY 21, 2019) Summer in Oregon is special. The rain decreases, and the temperature increases. People like to go outside and do things. In fact, they like to do a lot of things, and some of them are a little unusual. Here are some interesting things to do in June: If you like sports, you might want to attend an old-fashioned ballgame. Hillsboro and Portland each have a baseball team. They are the Hillsboro Hops and the Portland Pickles Do you enjoy drama? Then you might want to visit Ashland, which is home to one of the largest theaters in the country called the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It has several different live theaters offering classical and modern work. For the family, there is nothing more traditional than Portland's annual Rose Festival.
