A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 179In today's episode, I'm taking a moment to reflect on our incredible conversation last week with Iron Ramen — a gluten free Japanese restaurant built from the ground up after their son's coeliac diagnosis. We'll explore the powerful idea of doing one thing and doing it really well, and how that can lead to incredible growth — not just in business, but in life. I'll also talk about how Iron Ramen's journey reminds me of the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy about finding your reason for being, something I first came across in a book that had a big impact on me.Finding inspiration and motivation can feel tough sometimes in our gluten free lives, especially when coeliac disease can make things harder. But stories like Iron Ramen's — and the conversation I'm about to have next week with a podcast listener — show that if you don't let your diagnosis hold you back, you can find your purpose and live a great gluten free life.I'll also share a personal update on how I believe I'm finding my own Ikigai through this podcast, our community, and everything we're building at A Gluten Free Family. And, excitingly, for the first time, I'll introduce something I've wanted to do for a long time: sharing a listener's story. Next week, you'll hear from someone who has gained a lot from this podcast, and I'll sit down with them to hear their gluten free journey and how this community has impacted their life.In This Episode:A recap of our last episode with Iron Ramen: doing one thing, doing it well, and growing from thereHow a son's coeliac diagnosis inspired a thriving gluten free businessAn introduction to Ikigai: what it means and how it applies to living well with coeliac diseaseHow Iron Ramen found their Ikigai — and how it's inspiring others in the gluten-free communityMy personal journey with finding Ikigai through A Gluten Free Family and this podcastHow we can all find motivation and purpose after a coeliac diagnosisA look ahead: a special interview with a listener who found support and encouragement through this podcastHow finding your gluten free Ikigai can then help others in a similar situation to you Next week's guest: previewing our chat with Stephen about pushing through challenges and not letting anything stop youWhat is Ikigai? Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept meaning “a reason for being.” It's the sweet spot where what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all come together. It's about living with purpose, passion, and balance — even in the small, everyday moments.Resources Mentioned:Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc MirallesIron Ramen (link to website/socials)Connect with A Gluten Free Family:Instagram: @aglutenfreefamilyFacebook: A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupWebsite: www.aglutenfreefamily.comDisclaimerThe content on this podcast is not a substitution for professional medical advice. In this video, I give the full story on how I recovered from my own Complex PTSD symptoms, and how teaching my method grew from a few people to millions of people over the course of 30 years. My focus is not on childhood or the origins of trauma (this is the special expertise of licensed clinicians). Rather, I focus on practical ways to regulate the nervous system, and principles and techniques to get your life together and NOT fall into the old self-defeating behaviors that used to drag you down. I am the Mom of one amazing daughter. I am a Speech Language Pathologist who specialises in feeding disorders. I became an Intermittent fast in February of 2019 after being diagnosed with prediabetes and NAFLD. Both sides of my family have generational metabolic disorders. I found fasting when a coworker asked me to read Delay, Don't Deny by Gin Stephens so she could get my opinion on fasting. I had never heard of IF before this. I started my first fast that evening. I have lost and maintained a 30-pound weight loss over 6 years, but more importantly, I have reversed my prediabetes and no longer have a fatty liver. I am one of two administrators for Gin Stephens's Community. We are an online fasting community that is found off Facebook. When not working, I create content for my Instagram and TikTok accounts. Send us a textWhen Laci Tang experienced painful breastfeeding with her first child, she had no idea it would launch her into a career transforming how mothers receive lactation support. Her journey from anxious first-time mom to innovative IBCLC offers a much-needed blueprint for better postpartum care.Birthing at a midwifery center opened Laci's eyes to a different kind of care—one where she was listened to, believed, and supported in finding real solutions. After navigating tongue ties, low supply, mastitis, and then oversupply with her second baby, she realized how vital individualized support is for breastfeeding success. What makes her practice, Milk in Motion, stand out isn't just her expertise—it's her commitment to personalized care. “There has never been a single dyad, a mom and baby team, that has been exactly like the one before,” she says. Her innovative “pump bar” lets moms test different breast pumps before investing, solving a common frustration many face.Laci also speaks openly about her own postpartum anxiety—from intrusive thoughts to fears about her baby's safety—reminding moms they're not alone. Her story shows that mental health and feeding support go hand in hand.Whether you're expecting or currently struggling, Laci's story is proof that the right support can shift your journey from overwhelm to empowerment.Connect with Laci: https://www.milkinmotion.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/milkinmotion.co/ Join the Bump & Beyond Online Community for moms & moms-to-be! Boxing day 2021 he had his last drink but still had a cocaine problem that he had acquired through the party and pleasure-seeking life - he overcame that about 1 year later after having what he was told was a "psychosis" episode. He didn't use any outside help to get clean, no programs, no mentors, nothing but Gym, nonnegotiable tasks and focusing internally on being the best version daily. Los Angeles is going through one of it's biggest catastrophic events right now. Sara shares thoughts on life's traumas, what to say to someone when they are going through a hard time and also addresses survivor's guilt. Statistics show that 70% of us will go through at least one traumatic event. Sara went through a natural disaster when a tornado ripped through her town when she was young. Her best friend lost everything and the community came together. Sara also went through another “Lifequake” when she dismantled her home and moved with her sons to another home during her divorce. She has also been mourning for all of her most loved mountains and hikes above Pacific Palisades and Altadena, that are no longer there due to the fires. Sara talks about being prepared ourselves: Nothing stays the same. We live through constant changes. What are some things we can do or say to others' going through their traumas? 1.Reach out. That is the most simple step to show your concern. 2.Acknowledge the loss and express support. 3. Offer help. Ask what you can do. Clothes? Bring food? Contribute to a Go Fund Me? 4. Be empathetic but not overbearing. 5. Reassure them. Let them know they are not alone. Let them know you will be there now and down the line. Final thoughts: Give yourself grace with any guilt you may feel. Remember we are not alone. And try not to put off for tomorrow what you can do today. I am here for all of you.
