The traditional World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in Portland was officially canceled earlier this summer due to planning delays and volunteer burnout, leaving many disappointed. However, a new group of organizers has stepped up to ensure the event continues, scheduling a ride for this Saturday, September 21. In keeping with the traditional focus of the WNBR, this year's event will once again serve as a protest against fossil fuel dependency, with a special focus on Zenith Energy and its role in Portland's fossil fuel infrastructure.Read the original article at www(dot)planetnude(dot)co This is a public episode.

Val and Faith are back in the studio for 2024 and kick things off with a catch up on some of the local news over the summer break. We start by sharing our bike moments and for both of us they seem to resolve around red traffic lights and those magic moments when they turn green! Over the weekend a solidarity ride for the Gaza Sunbirds was organised by An Other Collective in Melbourne and Sydney as part of a world wide show of support. You can find out more about the Gaza Sunbirds at their website and donate to support their actions in Gaza providing aid.Darebin Council is holding a special meeting on Monday to consider a recision motion on some safety improvements for Soth Crescent and Newcastle Streets in Darebin. Take a look at the Streets Alive Darebin page for all the background on this and updated information on the original motion and the recision motion. Southside, in Glen Eira, the LXRP are planning to remove 100+ mature trees to build a protected bike lane. On a wide street with plenty os space for pedestrians, parking, moving vehicles, and protected bike lanes it seems incredible that these trees can't be saved. Especially when they are so important to those using active transport modes. You can read more on Glen Eira BUG's Facebook page. And who. could have missed it, but just in case you did, the Walmer Street bridge has re-opened! It has been a sage and much of that saga well documented by Yarra BUG Radio but the bridge is finally done! For now. In bad news, the Footscray Road shared path is now indefinietly closed due to the state government's inability to safely manage truck traffic. What do they do in the rest of the world we wonder? It's a mystery. And from the United States, the War on Cars dive into the horrendous increase in pedestrian fatalities and the uptake of SUVs. Two dates to put in your diary for 2024 have already been anounced: Feburary 25th will see a welcome summer edition of the World Naked Bike Ride in Melbourne and Sunday June 30th is set for the next Melburn Roobaix.

Wisconsin nudity ban: DNR throws a curveball

Wisconsin has historically lacked state anti-nudity laws, but recent legislative bills are causing concern among naturists. These bills aim to criminalize public nudity, particularly the World Naked Bike Ride, and restrict minors from events involving adult nudity. If passed, they could lead to Class A misdemeanor charges with fines of up to $10,000 and nine months in prison. Simultaneously, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed rule amendments, partly related to the closure of Mazomanie Beach in 2016, that threaten to ban nudity on state lands. These changes, separate from the legislative bills, could essentially criminalize public nudity statewide. The combination of these legal shifts poses a significant challenge to naturists in the state.

Let's get started! In Local News:  https://www.oregonlive.com/entertainment/2022/07/portlands-world-naked-bike-ride-2022-starting-point-announced.htmlThe World Naked Bike Ride is back in Portland this month and now, an official meetup destination has been put in place. The Portland World Naked Bike Ride will begin at Peninsula Park on Saturday, July 30 at 9 p.m. The route isn't published ahead of time. This month's ride marks the return of an organized naked group ride in Portland after sitting out the COVID summers before. Still, organizers are asking out-of-town participants to stay home due to the increased spikes in COVID cases and the ongoing pandemic. The World Naked Bike Ride is a part of a bigger movement of protest against fossil fuel use. The FAQ section of the Portland World Naked Bike Ride website states that the organization is, quote “Using nudity as a way to draw attention to cycling, and the folly of oil dependency. We hope motorists will begin to suspect cyclists have more fun, and hence maybe they don't need their cars as much as they thought.” end quote. In-state news: https://www.koin.com/news/health/coronavirus/these-21-oregon-counties-at-high-risk-for-covid-19-masks-suggested/With a new subvariant of COVID-19 increasing cases across the country, a data tracker shows that most Oregon counties are now at quote “high” risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 21 of the state's 36 counties, including Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties, are “high” risk. The CDC said new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 are calculated using data from July 7 through July 13 – a week total. For communities at levels considered “high” risk, the CDC suggests that community members wear masks in indoor public settings, stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines, and get tested if they experience COVID-19 symptoms.  In National News: https://www.oregonlive.com/health/2022/07/nationwide-988-hotline-is-the-911-for-mental-health-emergencies-suicide-prevention.htmlThe United States' first nationwide three-digit mental health crisis hotline goes live on Saturday. Quick help for suicidal thoughts and other mental health emergencies can now be obtained by dialling 9-8-8 on your phone. It's designed to be as easy to remember and use as 911, but instead of a dispatcher sending police, firefighters or paramedics, 988 will connect callers with trained mental health counselors. The federal government has provided over $280 million to help states create systems that will do much more, including mobile mental health crisis teams that can be sent to people's homes and emergency mental health centers, similar to urgent care clinics that treat physical aches and pains. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/abortion-federal-law-life-threatening?ref=bfbiobuzzfeednews&utm_campaign=bfbiobuzzfeednews&utm_source=buzzfeed.bio&p_id=99176Last Monday, guidance issued by federal officials stated that abortions performed to save a patient's life or well-being are legally protected regardless of state laws that may prohibit them. The guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services is meant to reassure healthcare providers, particularly those in states where abortion is banned, that federal law is on their side  when, quote,  “offering legally-mandated, life- or health-saving abortion services in emergency situations." Officials pointed to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), a federal law passed in 1986, which requires hospitals to treat people experiencing emergency medical conditions, including pregnant patients whose health is in quote "serious jeopardy." Monday's announcement comes days after President Joe Biden issued an executive order directing HHS to take steps to protect access to abortion and other reproductive health services. The order came in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.  In International News:  https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/13/business/euro-dollar-parity.htmlLast Wednesday, the Euro fell in value, reaching parity with the U.S. dollar for the first time in 20 years. The currency value of the euro has been losing ground against the dollar since the start of the year primarily due to the war on the eurozone's border, an uncertain energy supply from Russia, and a growing risk of recession. The currency, shared by 19 European countries, has slumped more than 11 percent this year, as the dollar's strength has been almost unmatched. The euro's sharp decline has come as the dollar, for generations, one of the safest places to park money, has strengthened against almost every major currency in the world. Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week: https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2022/07/11/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-images/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wp_main&crl8_id=c09bc3cb-36b3-4855-85b4-b10d2e0ea956Last Tuesday, NASA released the first set of full-color images and data obtained by the revolutionary $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope. The picture showed colliding galaxies, a dying star shedding itself layer by layer, a glorious stellar nursery, and the intriguing signs of water vapor and clouds on a giant planet whirling around a faraway star. The telescope is able to see further into the depths of space and time than the acclaimed Hubble, collecting the exquisitely faint infrared light emitted by the first stars and galaxies more than 13 billion years ago. Closing:  Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.

Join me, Josie Purcell, your host of the Photopocene podcast as I chat with the fabulous emerging freelance photographer, Alice Mason. Alice has a passion for photographing people which shines through in her work. She started out studying film at university and experimented with different mediums before falling in love with photography. Her work has a strong documentary slant, with topics ranging from the BLM protests, street photography, stylised and thematic portraits and fashion, with representation a key focus. She often works with members of the LBGTQ+ community and/or with models who have black, Asian or mixed heritage. Along with finding out more about her BLM protest coverage and the importance of telling the story of those you photograph, we also chat about our joint love of festivals and her long-form series, Glastonbury After Hours which looks at what's left behind at such an event. Other editorial work includes her coverage of the World Naked Bike Ride in London; an event taking place globally in various cities to raise awareness of climate change and her experience photographing the event. As ever, we talk about how photography has a role to play in shining a spotlight on environmental issues, which are most often linked to humanity in some way. Find out more about Alice's work at https://www.alicemasonphotography.com/ Or see her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/alicemasonphotography/ or LinkedIn at https://uk.linkedin.com/in/alice-mason And if you are heading to Glastobury this year, go see Alice at the Wreck Collective at Green Futures Field. ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (MAY 21, 2019) Summer in Oregon is special. The rain decreases, and the temperature increases. People like to go outside and do things. In fact, they like to do a lot of things, and some of them are a little unusual. Here are some interesting things to do in June: If you like sports, you might want to attend an old-fashioned ballgame. Hillsboro and Portland each have a baseball team. They are the Hillsboro Hops and the Portland Pickles Do you enjoy drama? Then you might want to visit Ashland, which is home to one of the largest theaters in the country called the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It has several different live theaters offering classical and modern work. For the family, there is nothing more traditional than Portland's annual Rose Festival. There's a parade, a carnival, and many other events. And it's 111 years old! . If the weather gets hot, there's no better place than the Oregon coast. While you're there, check out the sand castle contest in Cannon Beach. Portland Pride is an annual celebration of our LGBTQ community. LGBTQ means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer. The big party is in June with a colorful parade and other attractions. Maybe you want a bird's-eye view of all that surrounds you. You can see beautiful hot air balloons at Tigard's Balloon Festival June 21-23. Also high up in the sky is the summer kite festival in Lincoln City. Bring your own kite to fly or watch others. Did you know that some artists use a chainsaw? It sounds dangerous, but the results are impressive. You can see for yourself at the chainsaw carving contest in Reedsport. And, of course, there's the famous World Naked Bike Ride in Portland June 29. The goal is to raise the visibility of bicycles and public awareness of our dependency on oil. PORTLAND, OR - Oregonian's Steve Woodward has hopped aboard today with multi-media coverage of the WNBR. He's reporting 800 riders. VIDEO STORY LINK Riding cheek to cheek Not for naught nor for naughtiness do 800 cyclists pedal naked, but rather to do the globe some good Tuesday, June 12, 2007 STEVE WOODWARD Naked was the fashion Saturday night, and bikes were the luxury vehicle of choice. About midnight, with only the glow of streetlights draping them, an estimated 800 men and women pedaled madly across the Hawthorne Bridge into downtown Portland, up Northwest 23rd Avenue, down West Burnside and back into Southeast Portland in what has become an annual Portland tradition: the World Naked Bike Ride. Whooping and honking bicycle horns, the riders drew waves, cheers, laughter, camera flashes and favorable comparisons to Portland's "other" parade that very morning. Gawkers abandoned drinks and poured out of bars. Teenagers leaned out of a white stretch limousine to offer riders high-fives. According to reports from bikers, some spectators even joined the ragtag parade, shedding clothes and hopping on their own bikes. What's the occasion? The bare facts: Since 2004, Portland-area bicyclists have participated in a global event in which riders showing more skin than not ride in public to protest oil dependency. Their nakedness demonstrates bicyclists' vulnerability to cars. Last year, the Portland event drew about 500 "naked" bikers, the largest such ride in North America, according to organizers. "Portland is just a very great place," Erin Downs, a 17-year-old Northeast Portland high-school student, said at the warehouse party after the ride. "I want to be part of Portland," she said, dressed in blue hair, a blue kerchief and two studded leather belts slung low. "This is the life, blood and veins of Portland. If I didn't show up, how could I be a Portlander?" "I expected more naked people," said Mick Arrell, a 19-year-old Southeast Portland man with red, blue and green paint smeared randomly across his chest and arms. It's true. Many people stripped only as far as their skivvies. "I didn't strip down at the request of my roommate," explained Jimmy Schmierbach, 25, of Northeast Portland. "She said she didn't want to look at my junk." His roommate returned the favor, riding in her bra and panties. Although she was wearing frilly orange underwear with blue trim when interviewed, April ("like the month") Wiza said she was less modest during the ride. "All the good parts were showing," said the 27-year-old Southeast Portland resident. Wiza also displayed a poetic message for anyone behind her: "LESS GAS MORE (rhymes with 'gas')." The hand-painted message included an arrow pointing readers to her (rhymes with "gas"). On the blocked-off street outside the Organics To You warehouse party after the ride, several men had added ties to their birthday suits. One woman wore nothing on her chest but a red Superman logo. "Green power," declared a man's back. One woman dressed provocatively in cheap black lingerie -- cheap because it was painted on. Unlike many riders, friends Eric Miller, Kyle Kelley and Robin Jackson were fully dressed in something other than facial hair: Miller in natty beret; Kelley in full-on pink-and-maroon ensemble, complete with pink, feathered skateboarder's helmet; and Jackson in black fedora, dark pinstripes and red-and-white checkered vest. Miller launched his ride with a figurative fig leaf or two to preserve his modesty. "I started out not all the way," Miller said, "but I was feeling it." And, apparently, if one is feeling it, there's naught to do but shed the remains of one's modesty -- even in the middle of the Hawthorne Bridge. "It's nice to let go," said Jackson, an erstwhile Naked Bike Rider and a member, with Miller, of Portland's Marchfourth Marching Band. Actually, Jackson was dressed during the ride, too. "I was hanging out with my parents," he said sheepishly. Steve Woodward: 503-294-5134; stevewoodward@ news.oregonian.com
