Sometimes all you need is a quick trip to the ocean. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we take a baby day trip to the north Oregon coast – with an actual baby in tow. With stops in Cannon Beach, Manzanita and Nehalem, we find out what it's like to explore the coast, from fish and chips shops to the sandy beach, with an infant along for the ride. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Start the day at one of the best bakeries on the north coast. Baby's first visit to the ocean was full of new experiences. A search for great fish and chips led us to a new favorite. Some of the best little shops around this stretch of the coast. Salty Dogs, you say? Yes, as in salt water taffy and sailing the seas in the late 1700s. Those are just a couple of landfalls this episode makes as we hear about RJ's trip to Portland, Astoria, and points in between, eat the saltwater taffy he brings us (don't worry, we were mostly careful about the misophonia), wonder how bathtubs in hotels and motels are somehow not slippery yet don't feel like sandpaper, and by a route we no longer recall get to talking about DNRs and a few of the many questions there are on that topic. You may be able to help us out on that one—it's an important topic and we are not really up to speed. Give us a hand. Have a few laughs. Maybe even learn something, who knows? Let's go!Links: Shed Dogs; Astoria; article on the magic shop in Astoria featuring the dude RJ and Sue spoke to there; John Jacob Astor; John Jacob Astor IV (the one that died on the Titanic); the Lewis and Clark Expedition; Cannon Beach; The Geology of the North Oregon Coast; Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area; Salt Water Taffy; the Interstate Bridge; an amazing video of the the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in a 35 mph wind; recycling plastic in BC; a typical Rivian repair; The Lexus LS400 and the Birth of the Japanese Luxury Brands; why paramedics need to ask about DNRs; fascinating HMS Victory video (even for someone like RJ who normally isn't drawn to this kind of stuff); Master & Commander.Theme music is Escaping like Indiana Jones by Komiku, with permission.
When we think of alien visitation, we tend to look up at the sky or imagine secret bases in the deepest depths of the ocean, which all could be the case, but is it possible that alien beings are already walking among us? In this episode, we sit with Daniel Cohoon, host of the Magickal Journey podcast. Daniel has the ability to sense when cryptids and aliens are near. Daniel shares some of his encounters, including an interaction with a Reptilian entity whilst standing on the shore of Cannon Beach, in Oregon. linktr.ee/magickaljourney Freaky Merch! On site at Revel Surf in Mesa Arizona earlier this month we spoke with COO Adam Saks – a creative hospitality veteran who brings a refreshing New York realness to his work. It was pre-opening and Maricopa County was running through its final inspection list (spoiler alert, they passed and are open as of today.) Adam walks us through the Cannon Beach journey, which many of us are familiar with, but really piqued our interest with his innovative take on how surf invigorates a space. Here, in the stripmall-landia of the greater Phoenix area, a wave pool radically distinguishes a destination which rolls over into higher retail occupancy and rates. “Our rents in this 30 acres are a bit more than those across the street. It just is. And that's not a secret. Prospective tenants could go and call upon the real estate broker for the retail space across the street, and they can call our broker and they will get two different numbers. What we have found is that we're 100% leased. So people here are willing to pay a premium rent to open their business close to the water. Like I said, what Cannon Beach is going to be in a couple of years with everything that we're bringing to this corner and the fact that very little of that exists in Southeast Mesa. Entertainment is about everything in one place. That's what the world has become.”
Today, I had a blast from the past on the show – my friend and long-time karaoke bud, Sonya Paz. This woman is a freakin' powerhouse, juggling more businesses than I can count on one hand. This week, Multifamily Masterclass gets lively as host Bart Diehl teams up with panelists Heidi Butler and Jamison Manwaring to break down the latest news and trends in multifamily real estate—with plenty of laughs along the way! First up, we dig into the heated debate on political rent caps. Are they a necessary tool to protect renters, or a barrier to investors? We explore how rent caps affect the multifamily market, the ongoing supply-demand dilemma, and whether a national rent cap is even possible. Can landlords and residents both win? Then, we dive into why multifamily construction is taking a nosedive. In 2024 alone, 168,000 more units have been completed than started—what's going on? We'll discuss why this matters for investors, and whether rents and property values will rise as a result. On a lighter note, we play a fun game with surprising data from Zillow, guessing which apartment amenities renters are hunting for—some answers may shock you! Finally, we tackle Arizona's sizzling buzz, from the much-anticipated Cannon Beach water park finally opening to the pickleball craze sweeping the state. And with the steady flow of Californians moving in, could Arizona be on its way to becoming a blue state? Arizonans have plenty to say, especially those chanting, “Don't California my Arizona!
EPISODE #1089 THE CORRUPTION OF AMERICAN JOURNALISM Richard speaks with a Pulitzer-Prize winning investigative journalist about the ways in which journalism has, since the Cold War, been compromised by influences unseen and unheard by the public in deciding what people read, hear and subsequently believe. This cultural cold war, led by a CIA and State Department-tied political strategy, involved major news outlets, magazine and book publishers, and worked through a network of unsigned intelligence ‘ agents' – and influential institutions, foundations and government agencies -- to propagandize the American public, challenge socialism and communism, and preserve an elite “ Establishment.” GUEST: Dan Luzadder began his writing career as a teenage reporter working the night cops beat on a gritty blue-collar newspaper. Columns and investigative stories exposed crimes and public corruption and were honored with a Pulitzer Prize, an American Bar Association award for public service and membership in the Scripps Howard Journalism Hall of Fame. He resides in Cannon Beach, Oregon with his wife and their dog, Al Capone. Tonight's guest, Heidi Popp, has a fascination with the multi-dimensional aspect of the Sasquatch phenomenon. Heidi had her first Sasquatch-related experience when she was riding in her family's car, as a kid, when they were heading to Cannon Beach, in Oregon, in 1981. When she had that experience, she'd been watching the backroad scenery go by, as she and her family rode down Highway 26, in their family sedan. After looking out the window for quite some time, she hadn't seen anything that she hadn't seen many times before. What she had been seeing was beautiful, but nothing was out of the ordinary. That was about to change. Something happened that she'll never forget. Heidi hosts two podcasts. Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
In this episode, Christine introduces Sarah Kruse, founder of Embrace Ayurveda, who supports women in all stages of life through Ayurvedic consultations and coaching programs. Sarah emphasizes the importance of clearing and detoxifying the body, mind, and spirit before nourishment, which is often overlooked in Western medicine. Sarah discovered her passion for Ayurveda through a lecture by Dr. George AC, leading her to pursue further study with Dr. Of Asante lad in Albuquerque. Sarah emphasizes the importance of Ayurveda in supporting women's balance and self-compassion. She discusses how Ayurveda can complement Western medicine and other systems of healing. Speakers explore Ayurvedic approaches to women's health including menstruation, fertility, conception and pregnancy. The speakers discuss Ayurvedic practices for fertility such as preconception cleansing, resigning foods and beverages. Calming Vata dosha through food practices and awareness enhances fertility and postpartum well-being. Receiving postpartum care is transformative for families and society by allowing new mothers to bond with their babies. Ayurveda teaches that hormones are connected, and addressing one aspect can impact the whole body, improving sleep, hormone regulation, and overall well-being. Consistency in daily routine and bedtime for 2-3 months can help hormones respond quickly to achieve balance. About Sarah: Sarah Kruse is an Ayurvedic Doctor. She assists clients in returning to their true nature through Ayurvedic Consultations and Ayurvedic Health Coaching programs. She is in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Sarah is a mother as well as trained in Ayurvedic postpartum care, which was her area of focus before becoming an Ayurvedic doctor. Her passion lies around supporting women in receiving nourishment at every stage of life. And before nourishment happens, it is often appropriate to clear and detoxify the body, mind and anything else in the way. Some of the ways Sarah specifically helps her clients are in individual Ayurvedic Consultations, 3-month Ayurvedic coaching programs, her 10-week Metabolic Reset and Panchakarma cleansing retreats. Sarah also offers a year-long mentorship program where she invites women who are already committed to their health and self-care to deepen their relationship with themselves, their communities and planet, as we follow the rhythms of Ayurveda. https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/RHvYrNYmgrz8mq8ami-uYa1PIsiM0S0QnOpxZ5dq4qyDSeni1OOZTTyLTiFWzx3_.bhOmBNm9OjwpyoK2?startTime=1715184466000 Sarah's Links: https://embrace-ayurveda.com/ https://www.instagram.com/embraceayurveda Are you feeling the call to know more about Conscious Postpartum Care? It was a notoriously difficult climb, especially on the descent; but the 'idiots climbing Haystack Rock' dynamic didn't become a serious issue until after the helicopter was invented, and climbers started demanding that they be rescued. When they were, the propwash blew all the baby birds out of their nests and into the sea ... something had to be done — so, something was. Epic summer vacations are nice, but there's something to be said about a simple day trip. Here in western Oregon, it's incredibly easy to find any number of beautiful day trips, with the ocean, mountains, forest, rivers and desert all found within a three-hour radius. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we dive into a few great options for this summer. Day trips prove that you don't need a big budget or lengthy itinerary to enjoy an adventure –you don't even need a car. As you make your summer vacation plans, consider these local excursions that make vacation quick, easy and (relatively) stress free. Here are some highlights from this week's show: The key to dealing with Cannon Beach traffic jams? Go by bus. Breitenbush Hot Springs is a perfect place to unwind for the day. Day hikes big and small are found in the Tillamook State Forest. You'll never see everything on the Fruit Loop in one day, but that's probably for the best. Rockaway Beach does not usually make the lists of best beach towns. Narrow it down to the north Oregon coast specifically, and it still faces stiff competition with Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Astoria, Seaside and Pacific City. That could be even more reason to go. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we take a weekend trip to Rockaway Beach to discover all the overlooked destination has to offer. With corn dogs, ice cream, fried fish and kitschy shops, it definitely has a classic beach town vibe, while the beaches themselves can be expansive, quiet and beautiful. Here are some highlights from this week's show: What's the deal with Rockaway Beach anyway? Why Pronto Pup is corn dog church. Exploring the many beach access points. The Oregon coast is no Cabo San Lucas, but it is one of the best spring break destinations in the Pacific Northwest. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we highlight 10 of the best beaches on the Oregon coast, from Astoria to Brookings. Whether you're looking for beachside restaurants or quiet getaways, there's a perfect place for you here. The Oregon coast may not have reliably sunny skies or water that's warm enough to swim in, but it does have an abundance of natural beauty and a diversity of options for those seeking a little time in the sand. Who needs Cabo when you have Cannon Beach? Here are some highlights from this week's show: North coast beaches come with a lot of variety – and, typically, crowds. The central coast is much rockier, but there are several sandy beaches to check out. South coast beaches are beautiful and more wild, rewarding coast adventurers. Jan. 26 marks the 324th anniversary of the last Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The 1700 quake caused the coastline to drop by several feet and sent a tsunami crashing into the Pacific Northwest coast. Pressure has been building in the Zone ever since, setting the region up for another potential magnitude-9.0 quake. Researchers estimate this kind of “megathrust” earthquake occurs roughly every 300-500 years. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management has been encouraging residents to prepare with initiatives like the Great Oregon Shakeout and Be 2 Weeks Ready. Althea Rizzo is the geological hazards program coordinator at the Oregon Department of Emergency Management. Natasha Fox is the department’s inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) coordinator. Susan Penrod is the superintendent of the Seaside School District, which covers the coastal communities of Seaside, Cannon Beach and Gearhart. Shawn Looney is a member of the Linnton Neighborhood Emergency Team. They all join us to offer four different perspectives on earthquake risks and preparedness.
Hello, and welcome to the 41st episode of my trip! Today's episode is the 18th of our road trip across Canada and the USA. When leaving to backpack the world this year, we always intended to return to our campervan in Vancouver and drive to the East Coast in July. This is the sixth episode of the USA road trip as we leave Harris Beach and go through Oregon. Highway 101 continues to impress with its stunning views from viewpoints off the side of the road. Then we made our way to Cannon Beach, one of the must-see places on the trip, and it turned into one of the trip's highlights! I just loved the place! We finish in Astoria before crossing the bridge into Washington State. Revel Surf park is the wave pool powered by Swell MFG. It is the focal point of the 37-acre mixed-use development at Cannon Beach in Mesa, Arizona. In this episode, we have a wonderfully frank discussion with Matt Gunn, who along with his partner, built this wave technology. The journey one takes from obsessing on, and then building a new technology is not for the faint of heart. Matt shares fascinating stories of real-world R&D failures, triumphs and flat-out stoke as his crew prepares to open up to the public in Spring 2024.

SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. For the first strory, we visit LA's Cecil Hotel. It has been home to a LOT of murders, suicides, accidental deaths, and paranormal mysteries over the years. And at least two serial killers have called it home WHILE they were killing. An anonymous ghost hunter and true crime junkie decided to stay there herself and got the scares of a lifetime. For Dan's next story, we'll explore three separate locations all around Oregon's Nehalem Bay, another haunted hotel, an urban legend, and some cursed treasure. Lynze has two kind of lighter tales but still carry their own level of supernatural elements. In the first story, several generations share an encounter with the same male spirit in the same house. Then, a tale about the best kind of ghostly encounter you could ever hope for. New Merch: The classic moth design, now in color form, in the Bad Magic store this week! The Sunset Empire Transportation District recently resumed bus service on some of its routes in Clatsop County, including weekday service along Highway 101 between Astoria and Cannon Beach. The Astorian earlier reported that the transit district would restore some services after it had abruptly suspended operations and laid off workers due to a six-figure budget shortfall which first came to light at a district board meeting on April 27. The Oregon Department of Transportation provided a $505,000 emergency loan to the district to help it start operating again and bring back furloughed staff. It will also conduct an audit of the district's finances in the coming weeks, according to Paul Lewicki, the interim executive director of the Sunset Empire Transportation District. Lewicki joins us to talk about the upcoming audit, the current and long term challenges the district faces, and why he thinks it may take six months or longer for transit services to be fully restored.
