Brendan Ahern, chief investment officer at KraneShares — which manages a number of funds tied to China — says that President Trump's recent trip to China was viewed very differently overseas than it was in America. In China, the trip was viewed very positively for establishing trade boards, improving communications and laying a foundation for future negotiations.  Domestically, however, the view of China has been that a tepid consumer is making the economy struggle, and that's before inflation kicks up globally based on oil prices. Ahearn, who also is the author of China Last Night, says China is prepared for oil and gas shortages, but it is looking at domestic consumption stimulus to help rev up consumers to help drive economic growth and improvement. "It's not all rainbows and unicorns over there, economically," he says, "but it's certainly not the apocalypse you would expect either." One statement in Ahern's Big Interview is that "There's no such thing as China-ex investing," meaning it's hard to buy any funds or ETFs where the holdings truly exclude businesses from China, but Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, actually makes the point that in rare-earth metals, investors may want to take steps to avoid exposure to China. He makes the month-old Sprott Rare Earths Ex-China fund his "ETF of the Week," noting that rare-earth metals are a thematic play akin to buying gold miners, and that the new ETF, by avoiding China, follows a very different path than its longer-established competition. Plus, Chantel Bonneau Stewart, Wealth Management Advisor at WiseFit Wealth Management and Insurance Solutions at Northwestern Mutual discusses the launch of Northwestern Mutual's Personal Prosperity Index, which in its initial reading found that Americans feel good about the health of their relationships, body, mind and money, but they're not feeling nearly so good about the economy and politics.

Dr. Bill Ahearn joins me in Session 299 of Behavioral Observation. I met Bill a few times at conferences and I'm so glad we finally had a chance to sit down and record a podcast together. Bill is the Director of Research at The New England Center for Children. Long time listeners may recall that NECC sponsored a series of episodes, and in this podcast, we talked about some of the great research that has come out of that storied institution. As an aside, if you want to learn more about NECC, particularly working at NECC, you can find more information about that here. We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, including: Bill's early experiences as a grad student and clinician. His early work in addressing feeding problems. The research that he and his colleagues have conducted at NECC. How he construes stereotypic and self-injurious behavior as being forms of repetitive behavior. What he's learned about addressing stereotypy, including when and when not to intervene. We talk at length about Response Interruption and Redirection, particularly when it is and isn't necessary as an intervention. The behavioral interpretation of anxiety, and interventions that he and his team have brought to bear on related repertoires. I ask a few lighter questions on some topics of mutual interest (you'll have to listen towards the end to hear that). If you listen to nothing else from this podcast, towards the end of the show, Bill talks about why he is proud to be a Behavior Analyst. Please listen to that segment, as I think he makes some excellent points that are more than worth sharing. We also talked about tons of papers. I've done my best to track as many down as possible. Piazza et al. (2000). An evaluation of the effects of matched stimuli on behaviors maintained by automatic reinforcement. Rapp and Vollmer (2005). Stereotypy I: A review of behavioral assessment and treatment. Ahearn et al. (2007). Assessing and treating vocal stereotypy in children with autism. Colón et al. (2012). As he steps back into a head coaching job on familiar terrain, new Thomas Johnson High football coach Vince Ahearn is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Ahearn was hired back in late January to take over the Patriots' program, which has fallen on hard times over the last decade. Previously, he was the longtime football coach at rival Frederick High, but had not had a head-coaching position since he left Smithsburg High School in 2021. He tells host Greg Swatek why he decided to be a head coach again and why the TJ job was such a good fit for him. What are some of the biggest challenges he faces? What is the state of TJ's feeder program, which folded and is in the process of being restored? What is he most excited about? Ahearn answers all of these questions and more over the course of the conversation. Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to talk about another buzzer beater, the upcoming high school boys and girls basketball playoffs, the state indoor track meet and the state wrestling duals.

Can you believe we made it all the way to episode 300? Well, we decided to cap off the event by revisiting a topic that was in the headlines way back when the three of us started in the field of behavior analysis…and sadly is STILL a topic of discussion: Vaccines and autism. And while the findings are in the title (they don't), we review the research as to why there is still any discussion on the matter and reflect on whether approaching the anti-vaccine debate from a purely scientific findings lens might be playing into an ableist narrative that paradoxically feeds the misinformation discourse. Thanks to everyone for supporting our show for all these years (and special thanks to everyone who joined us at our live recording!). This episode is available for 1.0 LEARNING CEU. Founded by actor/philanthropist Paul Newman in 1994 to “press play” for children affected by serious illness, Barretstown serves thousands of young people and families at its magical County Kildare castle and beyond with impactful programs across Ireland and the UK.Our guest Dee Ahearn has been the driving force behind the Barretstown success story, joining in 2010 as CEO after an international career in marketing and communications with a stint as chairperson of the Make A Wish Foundation Ireland. In this holiday episode Dee shares heartwarming stories of transformation, saying:“Many parents will say that when they're on the drive out the gates of Barretstown, the conversation with their children is when can we come back? Why do we have to leave? This is better than Disney World! And the teenagers want to know how quickly I can come back, what age I need to be to become a volunteer. ”But the serious fun of swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, arts & crafts, and putting on plays rests on a foundation of solid governance, a quality that attracted our additional guest Tony Dunne, Bank of Ireland's US CFO, COO & US Country Manager, to chair the friend-raising and fundraising-focused Barretstown Foundation USA. The conversation underscores the importance of community and international support, including the cross-Atlantic support from American families and volunteers, and wraps with Dee's invitation to you to get involved and help Barretstown provide even more “serious fun.” LinksBarretstownWebsiteDonateLinkedInInstagramFacebookYouTubeTwitterXTikTokBarretstown Foundation USAInstagramFacebook Year End AppealDee AhearnLinkedInTony Dunne, CFO, COO & US Country Manager at Bank of Ireland USLinkedInEpisode Details: Season 6, Episode 22; Total Episode Count: 102
