What is the book of Job really about? While suffering usually takes centre stage when we think about the book of Job - suffering sets the scene for the real question the book is seeking to answer: Do we worship God because he blesses us or do we love God for God's sake? Join us as Pastor Arnaldo closes out our series through the book of Job. We pray this teaching is a blessing and hope to see you at one of our Gatherings soon.
In our pain and suffering, we've often cried out: "Why me?!" In some of our most honest moments we've doubted the goodness and wisdom of God. "Why would God allow ... that to happen...?" And more often than not, unless we understand the reason by pain comes into our lives, we can't see how it could ever serve a purpose. We protest and ask God to give an account for his ways. This week, Job will be granted that wish - he will be granted an audience. While Job had a litany of questions ready to ask God, it was God that put Job back on his heels and helped him to realise the most important lesson: God is God - Job is not. We pray this teaching has been a blessing to you and hope to see you at one of our Gatherings soon.
We don't really have the choice of whether or not we will suffer in this life; it's going to happen. We do, however, choose how we walk through the furnace of affliction. What do we need to know, be, and do if we're going to walk with God through suffering? How can we make it to the other side? Join us as Pastor Arnaldo walks through Job's defence and how we're called to walk through our own valley. We pray this teaching was a blessing and hope to see you at our Sunday Gathering soon.
The Righteous Sufferer and Evil Authorities
Six things NOT to say to someone who is suffering!
At one point or another we've either given or received platitudes or cliches in the midst of suffering. This serves no one well. This week we'll encounter Job's friends vigorously defending the retribution principle - the idea that what you put in is what you get out as a strict measure of running the world. Job will end up calling them "miserable comforters". So join us this week as Pastor Arnaldo walks us through the arguments of Job's friends and how we can become generous comforters to those in the furnace of affliction.
Join us as Pastor Arnaldo starts a new series on the book of Job.Job is one of the most fascinating pieces of literature. Ancient, it speaks to the modern dilemma of suffering. We'll learn that ultimately, suffering is a deep mystery that the book of Job doesn't so much answer; but a guide to faithfully wrestling with the inevitable suffering that we'll all experience. We hope you've enjoyed this teaching and look forward to having you at one of our Gatherings.
Job, his very name brings thoughts of suffering and loss, but who was this man? We examine his world, learn about his life and character, and see how he points us to the Righteous Sufferer.
The talk from our evening service on 23rd October 2022.
For a Babylonian polytheist, the gods are worshipped with the explicit expectation that divine veneration will avert bad fortune and attract good fortune. Yet as long as there have been people, we have seen that sometimes bad things happen to good people, and sometimes good fortune finds bad people. Religious explorations of this are called Theodicy, and we have already see a number of Mesopotamian attempts to wrestle with this, back in Episodes 26 and 53. The genre appears to culminate in one of the most impressive technical and philosophical works of ancient Mesopotamia, in the Babylonian Theodicy. Also, after looking at the Theodicy, we compare it to another Babylonian writing from an old man who is simply miserable with life. For more on this, check out episode 26, where we discussed the Sumerian "A Man and His God" and episode 53 where we discussed the Old Babylonian "Poem of the Righteous Sufferer", both of which are thematic precursors to this and almost certainly were at least indirect references for the author of the Babylonian Theodicy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oldeststories/message

This episode is as much an intro to the ancient Near East to my audience as it is for me! I am jumping into deeper research, and in order to do that, we're talking about Marduk, the Akkadian god who defeated the sea and created the earth. You can follow the research from the Open Richly Annotated Cuneiform Corpus (ORACC), and read the "Poem of the Righteous Sufferer" to keep up with all the talk! Thanks to Apes of the State for the use of their song Moments a Year From Now. Fables aims to be collaborative deconstruction of faith and cultural systems. Your host, Dylan, is a new atheist, working toward redefining morals and growing as a person. Join Dylan in sharing your stories! On this week's episode, Kylie is joined by Terry and Jacob to discuss myths and their role in culture. Most cultures have different stories to provide answers to certain, deep questions. Some of these stories include the idea of the righteous sufferer or a flood story or a creation story. Along with these topics, they touch on how even movies today carry on these same story lines. Across every generation, in every culture, throughout the ages humanity has pondered the question - what does suffering occur and if God is good and loving what does he have to say about it. This is exactly the purpose of the book of Job. Job and his friends spend much of the time pondering that question and at the end God speaks. In this talk Chris helps us to see the wisdom found in the book of Job regarding suffering and helps us to see how this impacts ourselves, our church and our community. In John Chapter 2, we see two familiar stories: Jesus' first "sign" at the wedding in Cana and Him clearing the Temple in Jerusalem at Passover. In each, He displays His power differently, but the result leads to belief. For more information on the Feasting on Truth Bible study, go to FeastingOnTruth.com/biblestudy.
