Our Election in Christ (2) (audio) David Eells - 1/7/26 I'm going to continue where we left off in part one, about our election in Christ. We were speaking about how Judas was identified from among the disciples. (Joh.6:70) Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil? (71) Now he spake of Judas [the son] of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, [being] one of the twelve. So, Jesus understood that Judas was a son of the devil, yet He called him to walk among the 12 in (Joh.13:18) I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen.... So Judas was not chosen . He went on to explain that He was not speaking of Judas, who never had ears to hear the spirit words and didn't believe. (Joh.6:63) It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life. (64) But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him. (65) And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father. Let me point out to you that it's not who receives the call and starts out with you who is chosen; it's who is still with you at the end. (2Jn.7) For many deceivers are gone forth into the world.... John is talking about them leaving Christianity. (1Jn.2:18) Little children, it is the last hour: and as ye heard that antichrist cometh, even now have there arisen many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last hour. (19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but [they went out,] that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us. “They” here is referring to the antichrist body leaving the Church. The Beast is antichrist in the world, but antichrist in the Church is this son of perdition or destruction. They will all be reprobated like Judas so you will know them. (2Jn.7) For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, (I.e, out of the Church) [even] they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. (They deny, “Christ in us the hope of glory.”) This is the deceiver and the antichrist. (8) Look to yourselves, that ye lose not the things which we have wrought, but that ye receive a full reward. (9) Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. So it's not “he who began with you” who is chosen; it's “he that abideth in the teaching” to prove they are not antichrist. Some people say they love the Word and seem very eager to study the Word, but there comes a point where they decide not to go any deeper, usually because it comes against their flesh. You know, lost people like knowledge. They like knowing things that other people don't know because they are prideful and this gives them a reason to be puffed up. The son of perdition likes knowledge, but when it comes to knowledge that demands a change in their life, that's where those people start filtering out, as the Bible says: (1Jn.2:19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but [they went out,] that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us. In the parable of the sower, three out of four, fell away. (2Jn.9) Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. “He that abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God.” This is saying you have to be obedient to have the Father and the Son. Antichrist are those who go out from among you and are denying the Father and the Son because they are not obedient to the Word. Remember that Jesus said, (Joh.14:15) If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. (23) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. That's not a promise to those who are disobedient or to those who start out and don't finish the course. That's a promise to those who endure until the end denying their flesh. (Mat.24:13) But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. (1Co.1:23) But we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Gentiles foolishness; (24) but unto them that are called (meaning “invited” to partake in election), both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. People who are called understand the wisdom of the Gospel, but to the rest, it's foolishness and a stumblingblock. However, you may preach the Gospel to somebody today, and they won't come, but they might come later on because the right foundation was finally laid and the right timing has finally come. Just because someone doesn't accept the Gospel today doesn't mean that they're forever lost of God's calling, but only the called are going to come to Christ. Only the called have initial salvation. A good example of that is, (26) For behold your calling, brethren, that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called:].... It's not many who “accept Christ” to begin with. This calling is not to the lost. This calling is internal; the calling is a gift from God to those who are being saved. The Bible never says, all are called. But it does teach that not all have the gift of faith. Everything in this world was created for the purpose of manifesting sons of God and everything that Paul did was toward that purpose. He said in (2Ti.2:10) Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. God called His Son out of Egypt (Hosea 11:1), but then He tried Him in the wilderness to find out who was going to go on to the Promised Land. Those who went on into the Promised Land were in type God's elect. Notice that His whole purpose was for the elect, not for those who fell away in the wilderness. You see, God's grace has been given to all those who are called, but it's the elect among the called who are going to take advantage of it and that's the difference. Paul dealt with many, but everything he did was for the few, the elect. God used Paul to fulfill His purpose. (Joh.6:37) All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. This is very interesting because the phrase “come to me” is used many places in Scripture. Jesus told the Jews in (Joh.5:39) Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me; (40) and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. That was obvious about most of the Jews then, who rejected everything that Jesus said. And it's obvious about those people today who reject everything that Jesus said, but did you know that some of those people who walked with Jesus, even as disciples, wouldn't come to Him? (Joh.6:66) Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. That actually happened, then and now. Notice the verse number 666. Antichrist was coming out from among them as we saw. Only God can cause a person to come to Jesus: (Joh.6:39) And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. (40) For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day… (44) No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day. It's not possible for anyone to come unto Jesus, except the Father draws them. It is possible for them to come to church and to believe many doctrines. They can go to an altar and accept Jesus as their Savior, even though we don't see anything in the Scriptures about that. But people will not actually come unto Jesus unless they are drawn by God. (Son.1:4 Draw me; we will run after thee:) (Mar.1:14) Now after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, (15) and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe in the gospel. “Repent and believe” is the Gospel being preached in the Scriptures, but it's been pushed aside for another gospel that says, “Just accept Jesus Christ.” That's a gospel that fills up the Church with tares because you can “accept” Him while He does not “accept” you. You can “accept” without repenting and believing. We've seen people who have come to the Unleavened Bread Bible Study and even when they were shown, “This is what the Scripture says,” they refused to believe it. The Greek word for “repent” is metanoeo and it means “to change your mind; to think differently.” Repenting means to change your mind and believe the Scriptures.  Some people refuse to do that. Yes, they can “accept” Jesus all they want, but Jesus doesn't accept them unless they repent and believe. Let me show you again that you can walk with Jesus, but not come unto Jesus: (Joh.6:64) But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him. That tells you Jesus knew from the beginning that Judas didn't believe. (65) And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me.... Judas was doing the same mighty works, and he was accepted among the disciples because they didn't know that he wasn't like them. Did he come to Jesus? No. Judas was walking with Jesus, and yet Judas didn't come to Him. Somewhere along the way, if you adhere to the Scriptures, those who are not of God are going to be filtered out. They are going to come to a place where the Scripture demands obedience and they will not obey, which is to repent and believe. (Joh.6:65) And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father. (66) Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. (67) Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away? (68) Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. (69) And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God. (70) Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil? He said several things about this devil. Jesus said that he didn't believe, he hadn't come unto Him, and he's not going to obey. (71) Now he spake of Judas [the son] of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, [being] one of the twelve. The son of perdition is still in the Church today. Let's read (2Th.2:3) Let no man beguile you in any wise: for [it will not be,] (the coming of the Lord) except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, (I.e., Like Judas they will eventually faction and fall away to prove who they are. We have seen this first hand.) (4) he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped (Like Judas, they don't start out this way, they end up this way.); so that he sitteth in the temple (Which in Greek is the word, Naos, which is always used by Paul as the people, not the building.) of God, setting himself forth as God. (I.e., They are their own God) (5) Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? (6) And now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. (7) For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only [there is] one that restraineth (the coming of the Lord) now, until he be taken out of the way. (The numeric pattern shows “until he be come out of the midst”. He will be taken out so that the body can be spotless, ready for the coming of the Lord.) (8) And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming; (9) [even he,] whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, (10) and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (Everyone they deceived also became one of them.) (11) And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: (12) that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.  That's talking about the corporate son of perdition in the corporate body of the Church. They are walking with Jesus, but they are not coming unto Jesus and they are doing the works that Judas was doing because Jesus gave Judas authority along with the others. You can have some works without the Life. (Mat.10:1) And he called unto him his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of disease and all manner of sickness. (Mar.6:12) And they went out, and preached that [men] should repent. (13) And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. He didn't choose Judas to be one of the elect, but he chose him to be one of the 12 and He gave him authority. We read in (1Co.11:19) For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you. It's necessary for factions to be among the people of God to prove them. (Luk.17:1) And he (Jesus) said unto his disciples, It is impossible but that occasions of stumbling should come; but woe unto him, through whom they come! It's necessary that these occasions of stumbling and these “heresies” come because they weed out the tares from among the wheat. They weed out those who don't bear fruit, and so Jesus chose Judas and didn't do anything to separate him from out of their midst, even though He knew what Judas was. It was the Word that finally ended up separating Judas; just as in these days, it's the Word that separates the Judas', the sons of perdition, from among the disciples. Judas brought Jesus to His cross. (Joh.17:2) Even as thou gavest him authority over all flesh, that to all whom thou hast given him, he should give eternal life. Remember that Jesus said in (6:37) All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me.... The “freewillers” say, “If you don't go get them, they won't come.” Well, I do believe in going and preaching the Gospel, but I tell you, if you don't go, somebody will, and those who are His are going to come. Some people think that Jesus failed in His mission because He gained so few disciples. No, He said in (Joh.17:4) I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do. What was that work? (6) I manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world.... Notice that the Lord manifested His name only to the elect among Israel, a type of the Church. He was not manifesting His name to anybody else. (Psa.147:19) He showeth his word unto Jacob, His statutes and his ordinances unto Israel. (20) He hath not dealt so with any nation; And as for his ordinances, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord. Jesus is still doing that today; He is still revealing His statutes and His commandments only to the Israel of God, circumcised in heart not flesh. Only spiritual Israel is a “chosen” generation now. But to the true Church He said in (1Pe.2:9) But ye are an elect (chosen) race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Notice carefully who the elect race is now. (Joh.17:6) I manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were.... This is the Church whom He “called out” of Judaism. Church means “the called out ones”. You see, before they came to Jesus, they belonged to God. They always belonged to God. Let me tell you something about the sons of God and the sons of the devil. According to election, a child of God was never a son of the devil. According to nature, they were sons of the devil as in (Ephesians 2:2,3), but according to election, they were never sons of the devil. Why? (Eph.1:4) Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love. In the mind of God, anybody who is a son was always a son. So Jesus tells us, (Joh.17:6) I manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were and thou gavest them to me (They belonged to God, who doesn't dwell in time, before they came to Jesus.); and they have kept thy word.  When the disciples walked with Jesus as His children (Mark 10:24; John 13:33; 21:5), they grew in wisdom and understanding, as the Bible says of Jesus: (Luk.2:52) And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. God didn't attribute to Him any of the childish things that Jesus might have done as a child because children do things grownups would never think of. He didn't attribute to the disciples any of the childish things that they said and did. (Psa.32:2) Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no guile. Jesus didn't hold against them the mistakes they made in ignorance. He had to rebuke them so that they would know what was displeasing to God. (Matthew 17:17; Mark 9:19; 16:14; Luke 9:41; 24:38; John 20:27; etc.) In spite of this He said, “They have kept thy Word.” (Joh.17:9) I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for those whom thou hast given me; for they are thine.... Notice Jesus was not going to pray for the world, but it's something we see done all the time. Do you know for whom we are actually praying when we pray for the world? We are praying for God's elect. Jesus said, “I don't pray for the world; I pray for those whom You have given me because they are Yours.” Someone who is not God's, will never be God's. We were chosen in Christ before times eternal, before the world was made. A person who is a child of God always belonged to God through election. Remember that God uses methods in election and He doesn't go around these methods.  He always uses the faith and prayers of His people to manifest election. He's going to use the faith and prayers of parents for their children to bring their children into the election. He's going to use the faith and prayers that you have for other people who are the elect of God. Some people say, “If my children are elect, they will just come into the Kingdom.” No, those people are neglecting the method by which God elects. God's method for election is faith and prayer. I personally don't believe that God does anything on the earth whereby He doesn't use someone in faith and prayer to bring it to pass. We have examples in the Scriptures of how God always used the faith and prayers of people to manifest miracles, to heal, to bring salvation, and so on (Genesis 32:9-12,18; Job 42:7-9; Luke 22:31-32; Acts 9:10-19; etc.) God has chosen to use the vessel of man to bring things to pass, and He's not going to circumvent man. You may have heard the old saying, “Prayer changes things,” but that's not a Scriptural statement. Prayer fulfills things. God chose, from the foundation of the world, His elect to come into His Kingdom. Through faith and prayer you can be a vessel to bring this to pass. What happens is that God puts in you the desire and faith to pray for certain people, and then He brings them in. (Php.2:13) For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure. And Jesus told the disciples in (Mar.11:24) Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye received them, and ye shall have them. What's the condition there? “Believe that ye receive them.” Faith is a gift of God. You see, “All things whatsoever” is a dangerous promise unless you know that God has total control over the situation because He's the one who gives faith in the first place.  If you've ever tried and failed, over and over, to believe for something, sometimes it's because you are praying for something that's not Scriptural. And your faith doesn't hold up, of course, because God doesn't want you praying for that. I don't want you to use this as an excuse, though; many people pray for things and then don't endure in their faith to receive them. Jesus rebuked His disciples for their unbelief in (Matthew 8:26; 17:20; Mark 9:19; Luke 7:9; etc.)  Remember what God said to Ananias when he questioned God's choice of Paul: (Act.9:15) But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel… (17) And Ananias departed, and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, [even] Jesus, who appeared unto thee in the way which thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. (18) And straightway there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and he arose and was baptized. God chose Paul to do wonderful things, and God put it into the heart of Ananias to come and pray for Paul to receive his sight and the Holy Spirit. That's a good example of how God uses people to do His will. Another good example is the story of Cornelius: (Act.10:3) He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius. (4) And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God. (5) And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter: (6) he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side. (21) And Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? (22) And they said, Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned of God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee. The angel was showing Cornelius to send for Peter and he will come and tell you how to be saved. Angels could do this but they don't because God chooses to use men. Jesus said, (Joh.17:12) While I was with them, I kept them in thy name which thou hast given me: and I guarded them, and not one of them perished, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. Again, in our day, the only one who is going to perish among the people, who are thought of as disciples of Christ, will be the son of perdition. “Not one of them perished” who was truly a child of God. Judas was not a child of God. According to Jesus, he was a son of the devil. Is there a “son of the devil” in the Church today? Yes, there certainly is; he was called “Antichrist.” Also in (Joh.3:18) He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.  Now the Armenians want you to believe that God loves everybody, but they must not have read this verse: (Joh.13:1) Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end. You see, the doctrine that says God loves everybody is not in the Scriptures: (Rom.9:13) Even as it is written, Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated. That's what the Bible says and we should believe it. Jacob, in type and shadow, represents the true Church. Esau represents those who hate the chosen people and fight against them to our day. Both of these men had the same mother and father. So we can see that among Christians, there are those whom God loves and there are those whom God hates for mistreating their brother. Physical lineages of flesh mean nothing in the New Testament. There are born-again men in all races. Many verses prove God is particular about whom He loves: (Psa.5:5) The arrogant shall not stand in thy sight: Thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Yet it also says, (Rom.5:8) But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. I discovered something about that. I discovered that God's love is just like His faith. He doesn't love you for what you are; He loves you for what He will make of you. God sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). If He loves you for what you are, then that would mean He loves sin and that's not true because the Bible says He hates “all workers of iniquity,” and the worker of iniquity is the “old man.”  Let's read (Eph.4:17) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye no longer walk as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind, (18) being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart; (19) who being past feeling gave themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. (20) But ye did not so learn Christ; (21) if so be that ye heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus: (22) that ye put away, as concerning your former manner of life, the old man, that waxeth corrupt after the lusts of deceit; (23) and that ye be renewed in the spirit of your mind, (24) and put on the new man, that after God hath been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.  There is a means to the end of election. (Col.3:5) Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry; (6) for which things' sake cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience: (7) wherein ye also once walked, when ye lived in these things; (8) but now do ye also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, railing, shameful speaking out of your mouth: (9) lie not one to another; seeing that ye have put off the old man with his doings, (10) and have put on the new man, (That is faith.) that is being renewed unto knowledge after the image of him that created him: (11) where there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondman, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all. God hates the old man and the Bible says the old man is the enemy of God: (Rom.8:6) For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: (7) because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: (8) and they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Some people want to convert the old man. He cannot be converted; it's not possible. He has to die. God loves you for the seed that He's sowing in you and what that seed is going to bring forth. God loves the fruit and the fruit is Jesus. He doesn't love the dirt. The Bible says He hates all workers of iniquity and people are workers of iniquity. Maybe you've heard someone say, “God loves the sinner but hates the sin.” Well, that's a complete lie and it's not Scriptural. He hates all workers of iniquity, so how can God love the sinner when the sinner IS sin and his whole nature is sin? Pick out any sinner in the world. They are bound in sin and “shapen in iniquity” (Psalm 51:5; Acts 8:23); their whole nature is sin. Their whole nature is self-will and rebellion against God.  There's no way to pick out something there that is righteous and good because nothing righteous and good is in a person if the seed of God hasn't been sown in them. (Psa.11:5) The Lord trieth the righteous; But the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. (Pro.6:16) There are six things which the Lord hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: (17) Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood; (18) A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief, (19) A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren. You know, that clearly describes unregenerate man, so it's clear that when we come to God, His love for us is a love of faith. (Rom.5:8) But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He loves us by faith; for what He sees we will be (1 Corinthians 13:12; 15:49; 1 John 3:2). It's a false doctrine that God loves everybody. God can save anybody He wants to save, as you can see in Apostle Paul's conversion, and if He loves them, He will certainly save them. (Psa.147:19) He showeth his word unto Jacob, His statutes and his ordinances unto Israel. (20) He hath not dealt so with any nation; And as for his ordinances, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord. God called Israel and He didn't call any other nation. Did He love any other nation? No, obviously not. Whom did He love? He loved Israel and He still loves Israel. He still calls His spiritual Israel, and He still reveals His statutes unto them.  (Deu.7:7) The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all peoples: (8) but because the Lord loveth you, and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. God revealed Himself to Israel and He knew that they were the least of the nations. They were the smallest nation; they were the weakest nation, and He revealed Himself to them. It's the same today! True spiritual Israel is a very small percentage of the world's population, and God is revealing Himself to them. He loves them and He doesn't love the rest. As it was with Noah in the ark.

Matthew 18:21-22 “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”A few of the ladies from my prayer group and I attended a bootcamp to teach us about the unbound method of deliverance.  Unbound is a method of setting people free from the things that weigh them down.  Sometimes we open doors to the enemy in ways we didn't know and Unbound helps us close those doors.  There are 5 Keys in the Unbound program.  The five keys are: Repenting of sin and expressing faith in Jesus; forgiving oneself and others; renouncing the lies, spirits, and tactics of Satan; taking authority over the works of Satan; receiving the Father's blessing. When you go through an Unbound session you meet with someone and they walk you through each of these keys.  In our first night of training we covered an intro and then we learned about the first two keys.  The first one was repenting of sin and expressing faith in Jesus.  We all sin, it is a part of our daily life, and yet when we sin in hurts our relationship with God.  When we sin we are opening a door for the enemy to come in.  Repentance for our sins is a big part of our freedom.  If we truly want to be free we can't have our sins hanging over us.  One way our sins can invite the enemy in is because He will then use that sin to make us ashamed of what we did.  Shame is straight from hell, it is not from God.  Once we start to feel ashamed then we pull away and we tend to isolate because we feel as though we aren't worthy of anything.  Once we repent we bring our sins out of the darkness and into the light and they no longer have hold over us.  The second key we talked about is forgiveness.  This is the one that left the biggest impression on me.  This is the one that I don't think we realize how important it is.  I remember when I was at a Bible study and they were talking about forgiveness.  We were talking about Matthew 6:14, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” When they said that God forgives us the same way we forgive those who trespass against us I was so surprised.  I had no idea what they were talking about.  Now, I have been a Catholic for my whole life and this was only about 10 years ago.  I have probably said the Our Father prayer more times than I can count and yet I never really put two and two together.  Have you ever had a time when you heard something or realized something and it was life changing for you?  I can remember two times this has happened for me with scripture.  The first one was when I discovered Romans 8:11, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”  When I discovered we have the power of the one who raised Jesus from the dead, the same power Jesus had, that was life changing for me.  The second time was when I discovered what I am really saying when I say the Our Father prayer.  “Forgive us O Lord as we forgive those who trespass against us.”  Did you know that is what you are saying?  How many times do you say that prayer, have you said that prayer?  If you say the rosary every day you have said it at least 6-5 times daily.  When I heard this I was determined to learn how to forgive better.  I was determined to not hold things against people.  I have done my best to do this.  Over the course of the last 10 years have a learned quite a bit about forgiveness in my quest to become better at it.  First I learned what forgiveness is and is not.  Forgiveness is making a decision that you are no longer going to give the thing that happened any space in your brain anymore.  You are not going to think about it and you are not going let it dictate what you do and how you act.  Forgiveness is an act of the will, it is not a feeling.  You can, not feel like forgiving someone and yet you can still forgive them.  You can forgive someone and yet not feel like anything has changed.  Forgiveness is not saying the thing that the other person did was ok, it was not.  When you forgive you are not letting the other person off the hook and condoning their behavior.  Forgiveness is making a decision to turn the judgement over to God.  Forgiveness is making a decision that you are no longer going to let the unforgiveness eat you up inside.  The person you are refusing to forgive probably has moved on and your unforgiveness is not bothering them at all.  The analogy that I have heard time and time again about forgiveness is that it is like taking a little sip of poison every single day with the expectation that the other person will die.  I know you are angry, hurt, sad, I am sure you have every right to be and also, as long as you keep thinking about it and refusing to forgive, you can't really heal.  I talk to people I know about unforgiveness all the time since learning we will be forgiven as we forgive.  I can't help it, I understand what is at stake and I know it is not worth it.  Whoever you are refusing to forgive has probably taken enough from you, are you really going to let them take you eternal salvations too?  What they did to you, is not forgiving them worth the risk of God not forgiving you?  Our teacher on Monday told us about a preacher/minister who had died and found out he was on his way to hell.  He said he saw how horrible it was.  In hell this man saw another man on all fours on fire from head to toe.  He had a collar around his neck attached to a chain and a demon was holding the chain.  Our teacher told us that this man went to hell because he had unforgiveness in his heart.  I was curious to hear the exact story so I looked it up online.  I will put a link to the article in the show notes.  It turns out is was a priest who had a heart attack and must have flatlined at some point.  CLICK HERE for the article. Here is what priest said, "I thought I was going upward because I thought I had done so much good in this lifetime trying to help so many people and made so many decisions that were godly decisions, but as opposed to me going up, I went down.”  This priest was very angry as he said he did so much good in his lifetime.  Then he said he saw Jesus and Jesus gave him a personal message.  "He said, 'You have been secretly upset with the people who have hurt you. You had been hoping that I would punish the people that hurt you. These are not your people. These are my people.' He said, 'I only want you to focus on the assignment I am giving you.' The priest explains, “Although I did good, the thing I had in my heart was the unforgiveness to the people who wronged me. A person that can't forgive is a person that has forgotten how much they have been forgiven of.”This example is probably not what we want to hear.  I know it scared me when I heard it and yet we must hear it.  We have to know what will keep us from spending eternity with our Father.  This is why God sends people to share these messages with us.  Mary gave the little children of Fatima an image of hell and told them that more people than we know are ending up there.  Forgiveness is not easy, I know that.  I know that I don't understand some of the things that have happened to you.  I know people can be terrible and they do terrible things.  If you are struggling to forgive I ask you to review what forgiveness is and is not again.  You don't have to forgive and forget.  You don't have to forgive the person and invite them over for Christmas.  It is perfectly ok to forgive the person and never see them again, never tell them you forgave them, never talk to them again.  Forgiveness is for you, it is not for them.  The last line the priest said really hit me.  “A person that can't forgive is a person that has forgotten how much they have been forgiven of.”  What if all the people we wronged refused to forgive us?  What if God held original sin against us and refused to forgive us?  What if he refused to send His only son to save us?  Forgiveness is so much more important than we think it is.  I know so many people who are refusing to forgive because they say the other person doesn't deserve forgiveness.  You might be right and also, forgiveness is about them, it is about you.  It is about setting yourself free from the spirit of unforgiveness.  Unforgiveness can block so much from the Lord.  It can block healing, it can block graces, it can block your forgiveness from the Lord.  Is it really worth it?I want to take a minute to add some hope to this episode as if you are harboring unforgiveness it might be very scary to think of the consequences.  You might have had some truly terrible things done to you and you want the Lord to forgive you and yet you have no idea where to even begin forgiving the other person or people.  Here is the thing, the Lord doesn't expect you to forgive on your own.  We can't actually forgive on our own. All we can do is say, yes Lord, I want to forgive, and the Lord can change your heart for you.  If you are at a point right now where you really can't even say, Lord, I want to forgive, please help me, that's ok, the Lord meets us where we are at.  Can you say I want to want to forgive?  Can you say, Jesus, can you give me the grace to want to want to forgive?  If so, Jesus will help you get to that point and then you can move to actually forgiving.  My teacher told a story about a woman who was doing an Unbound session and the woman who she was working with refused to forgive her sister.  Well, this is the first key, you can't move on to the rest of the keys if you can't first get through forgiveness.  The woman was adamant that she would not forgive or even pray for her sister.  The woman leading the session asked if she would be able to ask Jesus to help her want to want to forgive.  She said yes and she asked Jesus.  She said ok, now she wanted to want forgive, but she still couldn't forgive. The leader asked her if she would be willing to do 1% of the work to forgive if Jesus could do the other 99%.  She said she thought she might be able to do that and so she forgave her sister 1% and Jesus did the rest.  Remember, forgiveness is an act of the will, it is not a feeling.  She might not have felt any different after she forgave her sister that 1% but she was willing to do it.  God will meet you where you are at too!  If all you can say right now is, “Lord please give me the grace to want to want to want to forgive.”  That's ok, just say it.  God is the one who does the forgiving.  We just need to say the words and God does all the hard parts.  God is asking us to let Him in, to not refuse to let Him work on any area of us.  Can we do that?  Can we give God even a tiny little crack of a window where He can come in and transform our heart?  Don't let the unforgiveness of what others did dictate the level of forgiveness you get from God.  Haven't then done enough, don't let them continue to have an effect on your life and definitely not your eternity.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, today's topic was a hard one.  I ask you to open people's hearts and minds and let them hear the word that you want them to hear.  Holy Spirit I ask you to convict each person listening to this of any unforgiveness that they may have so we can all work to forgive.  Sometimes our unforgiveness is hidden and so we ask for you to show us any areas we need to forgive in Lord.  We say yes to you coming in and helping us forgive.  We say yes to you forgiving us as we forgive others.  We say yes to loving your children as you love them.  We love you Lord and we are sorry for closing you out and not letting you heal our hearts by guarding them with unforgiveness.  We need your help Lord and we are so grateful you always come when we call.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.   I look forward to meeting you hear again on Monday.  Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I!  Have a blessed weekend! www.findingtruenorthcoaching.comCLICK HERE TO DONATECLICK HERE to sign up for Mentoring CLICK HERE to sign up for Daily "Word from the Lord" emailsCLICK HERE to sign up for my newsletter & receive a free audio training about inviting Jesus into your daily lifeCLICK HERE to buy my book Total Trust in God's Safe Embrace

Humble Heart & Gratitude Expressing honor and gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Lord. Acknowledging a "big old humble heart" and constant thoughts of people and Jesus. Expressing gratitude for being saved, recognizing it as an undeserved act of grace. Saved at 38, felt lost before salvation. Mark Chapter 5 & Personal Connection Reading from Mark chapter 5, focusing on Legion. Brother Tommy asked to speak Tuesday morning. Prayed about the message, feeling a connection to Legion. Recognizing a past behavior mirroring Legion's self-harm. Cutting self with razor blades as a teenager (17-18 years old). Devil trying to "kill, steal, and destroy." Encounters with Evil Recounting three experiences of feeling strangled while asleep. First at 18 at dad's place, felt someone on chest, could not breathe. Saying "Jesus" three times stopped it. Second time at home before being called to preach. Again, saying "Jesus" three times stopped it. Third time, saw a black demon sitting on chest, choking. Demon described as black with scaly skin and large black wings. Not scared this time, realized the demon was trying to prevent future ministry. Devil's Tactics & Vulnerable Targets The devil targets the vulnerable, like babies or weak church members. The devil seeks easy prey, those easily swayed or killed spiritually. The devil uses the weakest link in the church to cause division. Awareness is crucial to resist the devil's influence. Personal vulnerability to returning to self-harm ("cutting arms") if yielding to the devil. Close Calls & Divine Intervention Recounting incidents where divine intervention prevented potential disasters. Drag racing incident where a truck stopped unexpectedly. Driving through a field in a 73 Dodge Charger at night and narrowly avoiding a tree. Realizing the danger but still not listening to God. Fighting the Devil with Scripture Cannot fight the devil spiritually. Emphasizing the need to use scripture against the devil, as Jesus did. Devils bow down to Jesus. Legion's Story & Personal Reflection Relating to Legion's torment and self-harm. Remembering cutting self and apologizing to the Lord. Acknowledging God's repeated rescue from dangerous situations. Driving a mixer truck on a mountain, fearing it wouldn't make it. Praying for help and reaching safe ground. The Power of Jesus & Transformation Legion recognized Jesus and worshipped him. The devil knows who Jesus is. Jesus cast out the demons from Legion into swine. Two thousand swine ran into the sea. Legion, now in his right mind, wanted to follow Jesus. Jesus instructed him to share his story with his community. Living a Transformed Life Expressing a commitment to staying "in the boat" with Jesus. Refusing to tolerate sinful behavior in personal space ("my house"). Avoiding involvement with friends engaged in harmful activities (drinking, drugging). Recognizing the heavy price paid for salvation. Repenting from sins and not letting them accumulate. Prioritizing God's will over worldly desires. The Preciousness of Ministry Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to preach God's word. Desiring to continue preaching about salvation and the promise of eternal life. Acknowledging God's goodness and the transformative power of salvation. Quitting bad habits and starting a life for Jesus. Family & Faith Family members talking behind back about going to church all the time. Celebrating family members getting saved, including son and granddaughter. Prayers are heard by God. The Danger of Turning Away The worst thing is knowing the righteousness of God and walking away from it. Sharing the story of mother's 42-year backslide due to disobedience. Describing a difficult childhood marked by tension and fear.

Satan wants the church confused about sin—because if you don't know what's killing you, you'll never reach for the cure.  In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares how to overcome sin and live the life God calls you to live. What is sin?Sin is any behavior, intentional or accidental, outside of God's boundaries. The Bible also calls it "trespass"—you're not just doing the wrong thing; your heart is in the wrong place.Romans 3:23 NIV: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." What the Bible says about sin:Sin is not just a behavior—it's our nature. Romans 5:12 NLT: "Adam's sin brought death... so death spread to everyone." Don't just think of sin as an action you commit, but a condition you carry. We don't become sinners because we sin; we sin because we're sinners.Sin is selfishness. Matthew 16:24 NIV: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves..." Sin starts when "self" sits on the throne.Sin is lawlessness. 1 John 3:4 ESV: "Sin is lawlessness." Other terms: transgression (sin on purpose) and iniquity (a lifestyle of rebellion). Why sin matters:Sin is a big deal because it hurts everyone.Sin hurts you. Romans 6:23 ESV: "The wages of sin is death." Sin sells pleasure but hides the price tag.Sin hurts others. Hebrews 12:15 NLT: "Watch out... that no root of bitterness... corrupts many." Sin is like glitter—it spreads.Sin hurts God. Ephesians 4:30 NLT: "Do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit."What doesn't work:Trying harder. Romans 7:21–23: "I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong..." Righteousness comes from God's power not willpower. Freedom is found in surrender, not striving. More rules. Colossians 2:20–23: "Such rules... provide no help in conquering evil desires."Anger. James 1:20: "The wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God." You can't punish people into purity. What does work:Confessing and cleansing. 1 John 1:9 NLT: "If we confess... he is faithful to forgive..."Repenting and retraining. Acts 2:38: "Repent... turn to God... and be baptized." Repentance is more than "I'm sorry"—it's "I'm done."Relying and relating. Romans 5:18 NLT: "Christ's one act... brings a right relationship with God." The cure for sin isn't effort, it's intimacy. The Cure:Like anti-venom comes from a lamb's blood, our cure comes from the Lamb of God.2 Corinthians 5:21: "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us..."Sin is serious—but Jesus already dealt with it.So next time the enemy tries to accuse you, say:"Not today, Satan—the cure's already in my veins."Are you surrendering your sin to your Savior?

This week in our series on the Parables, Jesus provokes us with his sense of justice. He references a recent tragedy and then starts asking who is at fault. Then he tells a parable about wasted resources that may need to be cut. Both could easily be headlines from this week. Yet neither part of this teaching is very comfortable if you are a follower of Christ. And it certainly doesn't seem joy-inducing. But if Christ came to bring good news of grace for broken people, then how do such ominous warnings help us? Why is he pressing them with their own desire to assign blame in the midst of tragedy? Let's talk about the joy-through-warning which Jesus intends at "The Repenting Tree" Luke 13:1-9

Revive them in our day, in our time, make them known; in wrath remember mercy. - Habakkuk 3:2, NIV   Everyone likes 2 Chronicles 7:14 – “If my people who are called by my name…” – because it promises what we deeply crave: revival. But revival isn't just emotional fire. It's not hype. It's not a nostalgia trip back to better days. Revival is when God invades the ruins of his people's sin with his mercy, his Word, and his Spirit — and makes us new again. We're walking through the lives of three kings — Hezekiah, Jehoshaphat, and today, Josiah — who each experienced this kind of God-driven revival. These were moments when God turned the lights back on, not because the people earned it, but because he remembered mercy. In the generation after Solomon, the country split in half, north and south, and the northern kingdom of Israel moved into stark idolatry under their rebel King Jeroboam. He built an alternative Temple for idolatrous worship, set up an alternative priesthood, and listened to false prophets. Right in the middle of that, God sent a true but unnamed prophet to Israel to announce that centuries later, he would raise up a king who would put the finishing touches on the demolition of this idolatry and renew the covenant between God and his people. The prophet said his name would be Josiah.   That's the King we are looking at today. He was the last great reformer before Judah collapsed. His story isn't just inspiring — it's prophetic. His name was called out centuries before his birth, a rare mark of divine intention. God raised him up for this moment: to tear down false worship, to rediscover the Word, and to renew the covenant — a picture of how God revives his people. 1 Kings 13:1-2 “By the word of the LORD a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. 2 By the word of the LORD he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David…That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the LORD has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.” NIV   Let's look at the three movements in Josiah's story: 1. Discovering the Book 2. Repenting from Sin 3. Renewing the Covenant   2 Chronicles 7:14 is a beautiful promise from God made to Solomon when he dedicated the newly built Temple in Jerusalem. It wasn't just beautiful - it was essential. God's people would frequently stray from their faith and forsake the Lord. Yet God was also merciful, granting revival, reformation, and rescue from their enemies to his people time and time again. In the text before us today, we see the fulfillment of God's promise as King Josiah comes to the throne as an eight-year-old boy, near the end of Judah's national life, leading a country that has abandoned God, even though God never abandoned it.   I. Discovering the Book - 2 Kings 22:10-13 At age 26, Josiah's workers are cleaning out the Temple when they find something that should never have been lost — the Book of the Law. God's Word had been buried. Forgotten. Tossed aside. But once it was read aloud, everything changed. The spark of revival always starts with rediscovering God's Word. The Bible isn't magic, but when God's people stop ignoring it and start listening to it — deeply, personally, humbly — revival becomes possible. The Word cuts. It convicts. It calls. You can't have a revival without the Book. If the Word has gathered dust in your life — if it's been shoved in a drawer behind the hustle and noise — there's no revival without opening it again.   II. Repenting from Sin - 2 Kings 22:11-13 Josiah's response is immediate and raw. He tears his clothes — a public act of grief and repentance. He realizes that God's wrath is hanging over them, not because God is unjust, but because the people have rebelled. And Josiah doesn't just repent personally. He leads the entire nation in repentance. He cleanses the land of idols, smashing them to dust. He tears down altars built for false gods. He doesn't manage sin — he destroys it. Real revival always comes with repentance. That means naming our sin, turning from it, and refusing to make peace with what God has condemned. Is there something in your life that needs to be smashed, not managed? Revival isn't just singing louder — it's living differently.   III. Renewing the Covenant - 2 Kings 23:1-3, 21-22 Josiah calls the people together and publicly renews the covenant — their sacred agreement with God. He restores worship, reinstitutes the Passover, and re-centers the nation on Yahweh. This wasn't just a ceremonial act — it was national restoration. Revival isn't just about cleaning house; it's about reclaiming God's promises and re-aligning our lives under his rule. God made a covenant with his people. Even when they broke it, he didn't walk away. Josiah leads them back into it. But here's where the story takes a turn. As beautiful as Josiah's revival was, it didn't last. After his death, Judah fell back into sin. Within a few years, Babylon invaded, the Temple was destroyed, and the people were exiled. Even the best king couldn't stop judgment from coming. Josiah was a good king, a faithful king — but he wasn't the King. The King of the New Covenant Centuries later, another young man from the line of David would rise, who was also foretold by the prophets — not to repair a broken temple, but to become the Temple. Not to renew the old covenant, but to establish a new one in his blood. Jesus is the greater Josiah. Where Josiah rediscovered the Book, Jesus is the Word made flesh. Where Josiah tore his clothes in grief, Jesus was torn for us. Where Josiah renewed the covenant with sacrifice, Jesus became the sacrifice that secures the covenant forever. Josiah brought revival for a moment. Jesus brings renewal for eternity. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus offers a better covenant, sealed by his blood, written on our hearts by the Spirit, not just in a scroll or temple. He doesn't just clean the outside — he gives us new hearts, making us the temple. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Conclusion: Looking for Revival Habakkuk's prayer is ours: “Repeat your deeds in our day, Lord… in wrath remember mercy.”   We don't need to manufacture revival — we need to seek the King who brings it. Let's follow Josiah's example: ● Return to the Word. ● Repent from sin. ● Renew our covenant commitment to Jesus.   Let's NOT put our hope in a political figure, not in emotional highs, not in religious nostalgia — let's put our hope in the King of the New Covenant, Jesus Christ, who revives the dead, restores the broken, and renews all things.   Response Questions: ● Where has God's Word been lost in your life? ● What sins are you managing instead of repenting from? ● Are you living under the old way, or under the new covenant with Jesus?   Let's pray for revival — not just around us, but in us — through Christ our King.

What if everything you thought you knew about repentance was making it harder than it needs to be? The concept of teshuva (repentance) often feels overwhelming—a complete transformation that seems almost impossible to achieve before Yom Kippur. But what if authentic spiritual return is actually much more accessible than we've been led to believe? This episode explores a revolutionary perspective on teshuva based on the teachings of Rabbi Shlomo Hoffman and the wisdom of Rabbeinu Yonah. At the heart of this approach is a powerful distinction: while the stringent view of Maimonides suggests complete transformation is necessary, Rabbeinu Yonah teaches that teshuva simply means "standing on the right path"—not arriving at the destination.Through a compelling parable about a driver mistakenly heading north from Manhattan when trying to reach Miami, we discover that the mere act of turning around—recognizing your mistake and changing direction—is the essence of repentance. You don't need to reach your destination overnight; you just need to get on the right path. This understanding transforms teshuva from an impossible ideal to an attainable reality. The first step isn't perfection but honest self-awareness—having the courage to acknowledge where you've gone wrong without self-deception. As the Torah itself reassures us, this mitzvah "is not too baffling for you, nor beyond reach... it is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart."Whether you're preparing for the High Holidays or seeking spiritual growth at any time of year, this episode offers a liberating perspective that makes authentic repentance accessible to everyone. With honesty, courage, and commitment to improvement, we can all achieve this incredible gift of teshuva, one step at a time.Join us as we discover why true spiritual return might be much closer than you think.Support the showJoin The Motivation Congregation WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content!---------------- SUBSCRIBE to The Weekly Parsha for an insightful weekly talk on the week's Parsha. What if our understanding of repentance makes it harder than it needs to be?This insightful exploration of teshuvah (repentance) unveils a revolutionary approach, transforming this seemingly daunting spiritual task into something remarkably accessible. Drawing from the Torah's promise that this mitzvah "is not too baffling for you, nor beyond reach," we discover that the path of return might be closer than we ever imagined. The episode introduces the profound wisdom of Rabbi Shlomo Hoffman, whose psychological and spiritual insights have guided thousands through the complex terrain of genuine change. Through a powerful parable of a driver heading north instead of south, we learn that teshuvah isn't about reaching the destination; it's about recognizing your wrong direction and making the turn. Most remarkably, Jewish tradition offers competing models of repentance. The one we're encouraged to follow—Rabbeinu Yonah's approach—is surprisingly gentle. Yom Kippur atones not for those who have completed their transformation, but for those honestly engaged in the process of returning. For anyone who has felt overwhelmed by the demands of the High Holiday season, this perspective offers profound relief. The first step—honest self-awareness about what needs to change—is already considered teshuvah. This clarity, this moment of recognition, places you firmly on the path of return. As Rosh Hashanah approaches, allow yourself to embrace this compassionate understanding of spiritual growth. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step—or, in this case, a simple turn in the right direction.Support the showJoin The Motivation Congregation WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content!------------------Check out our other Torah Podcasts and content! Is it possible we have come to a severe misunderstanding of what worship really is? What if it’s not about the atmosphere, the songs, what you feel in the moment, but your life when the moment is over? Could it be that real spiritual worship of God is less about singing, but more about something you become? We must not confuse a moving worship experience with a life that’s actually being transformed. Worship isn’t measured by your emotional response during a worship set, but by obedience when the songs are over. God’s intention in providing you with His sovereign grace is to completely rewire everything about how you live. Like… How you speak about others when they aren’t around. How you show up to serve when you’re tired. Your work ethic when there isn’t a public or monetary reward. Repenting quickly when you’re wrong. Generosity when others are in need, even when money is tight. Being in community even when you don’t feel like it. Having the hard, honest, loving conversation instead of ghosting. Integrity when secretly cutting corners is easier. The only logical, reasonable, rational response to God’s sovereign grace and mercy is our full, complete sacrifice. If mercy really rescued you, worship isn’t an experience, it’s your mission. Ch 12 defines what the mission looks like:

A Journey through the Books of Luke

The Three “R's” - John 3:1-15The 3 Rs in school. Helps us to remember. Many preachers like to use the same alliterative method in their preaching to help folks remember their sermons. I have found that it does not really work like that. If you want folks to remember something, it has to be short and really memorable, (like “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!”) or you need to repeat it so often that at least the preacher can remember it. Usually, what people remember is how you made them feel, not what you said. The proof is not in specific words, but in what is printed in your heart! What you experience. Selwyn Hughes: l knowing the Psalm (23] is one thing – hearsay – but knowing the Shepherd is quite another – heart-say.Read textLet's look at the three Rs in this passage: Selwyn Hughes: “make no mistake about it – the image of God that you carry in your heart is the one that you will relate to in a moment of crisis.”   Repentance Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38David Pawson: “Do you realize if you are ever going to start on the road to the kingdom of heaven you have got to repent of your good deeds as well as your bad deeds, if you've been putting your trust in them?”Rebirth Titus 3:5 NIVRevelationFlesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. Matt. 16The picture of the snake Numbers 21:4-9 and Jesus quotes this now.The discussion with NicodemusTroubled by what he sees and knows and is honest enough to seek out answers  despite the perceived opposition, he takes a risk to seek out Jesus. As a teacher in Israel, he knows the laws that govern and how they are interpreted.  Do good deeds, do the religious things and then you will be acceptable in God's sight. But he obviously doesn't know about the assurance of salvation, and the actions of Jesus, disturb him, even though he can see how those deeds were contrary to what they believed. But it was going to affect his as well as their income, lifestyle, teaching, and their way of life that they had become accustomed to. Was it worth it? Is what Jesus brings worth the price of every one else's wrath? Isn't what we do, perhaps with some alterations here or there enough? Why this dramatic confrontation and change? Aren't we all the children of Abraham? Are we not on the right path? We are doing what we are supposed to do with the offering, sacrifices and the religious zeal for the Words of the law and prophets? We memorize it, we teach our children, we do our best to be kind and good people. Okay we mess up sometimes, but we all do it, but at least we belong to the right family!Jesus cuts right through all his questions and his dilemmas and comes straight to the point: “You must be born again.”This means, Jesus is saying you are not in the right family at all. Being a descendent of Abraham does not make you righteous. Keeping the laws to the best of your ability does not make you righteous. Your basic problem is: You have the wrong nature. Your good deeds are like filthy rags to God. He is not pleased with you because you try harder to please him. There is only one thing you can do with your nature, and that is it must die. If you want live, you must be born again.Nicodemus: What do you mean? What are you talking about? How can you be a teacher in Israel and not know this? Abraham lived by faith in God! Jacob lived by faith in God. Joseph lived by faith in God. Moses lived by faith in God! All of them lived in faith before the law came! They understood their nature was the nature of sin, death, darkness and evil.  It is not about religious activities; it is a matter of a transformed heart. A birth where God Almighty is your father.Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, as a matter of fact, if you are not born again of the spirit of God you cannot even see the kingdom. Worshipping God is not about religious activities, it is something we do in Spirit and in truth! The breakthrough comes when God enters you like the wind and directs you in your faith and your life.Wow. Jesus must have loved him a lot to confront him so directly. Now the matter of being born of water and the Spirit: Some think it means the passage of water when you are born the first time. Birth of the Spirit comes when you believe in Jesus. Most say it can be a dual understanding.  You see John has just spent time with John the Baptist and following this encounter Jesus and the disciples go baptizing as well.  The focus really is on what happens in Baptism:The First R is Repentance. Repenting from bad deeds and good deeds as well if they are what you are depending on for God's pleasure and acceptance. The focus on repentance is critical for a spiritual life. It is the forerunner of moving into God's Kingdom. Learning to be humble and repent before God. Being able to see when we do wrong to others and apologize to them. Letting the Holy Spirit show us just how frail we are and how vital and eternal the Kingdom of God is. It shows us that it is not about us, it is all about him!The second R is Rebirth: That is when the Holy Spirit enters our lives to take up residence within us. We become Children of God. Our nature changes from sinner to sons and daughters of the Most High God! Make a confession: I am a child of God because I believe Jesus, I trust Jesus, and I will follow Jesus. The third R is Revelation: The snakes on a pole did not save the people, it was their obedience in Number 29.Nicodemus remembered his discussion with Jesus when he came to take him down from the cross with Joseph of Arimathea.

What happens when we come to the end of ourselves? What can we do when self-improvement isn't enough to change a destructive or unhelpful habit? Does Jesus still love us, even when we feel incompetent? The short answer is yes. The longer answer is we have an available Savior who we can turn to when He knocks on our door, ready to embrace us. Join us this Sunday to imagine what this could look like as Kim invites us to do just that: turn towards our available Savior. - Series Description - This Lenten season, we will create space for the Lord to move for the sake of growing closer to Jesus and the way of Jesus. The way of Jesus is life and life abundant. It is also life through constraint, sacrifice, and even suffering. Our own missing the mark, our own sin, keeps that life far from us and keeps the work of death close. Pursuing life means giving God space to convict us of sin and to embrace us with forgiveness. Conviction of sin by the God of love gives us space to seek God for life, mercy, and for forgiveness. Condemnation simply closes us in our own darkness. It robs us of hope. Yes, conviction exposes our sin as light piercing darkness. However, the revelatory light of conviction is joined by the warmth of the Father's love for us. We will experience both this Lent as we go deeper with Conviction & Embrace, our Lenten teaching series.

Read OnlineThe crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” Luke 3:10Among those within the crowds who were asking Saint John the Baptist this question were tax collectors, soldiers and ordinary people. John gave an answer to them all, first telling them to turn away from the sins that they struggled with the most. Sin takes on many forms and often is closely associated with our daily duties in life. Some sins are sins of commission, meaning sins we commit by an intentional act. Some sins are those of omission, meaning a lack of certain virtues or a failure to do what we ought to do.After addressing the particular sins that those in the crowds were struggling with, John then turns their attention to Christ. He states to them that “one mightier than I is coming” and that “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” In other words, John was giving the people a twofold command. First, work to overcome sin. And second, turn your eyes to Him Who is coming to you. Repenting from sin is not enough. Once we repent, we must then fill the void within our souls with the presence of Christ.Advent, just like Lent, is an important time within our liturgical year to heed these messages. Though it's true that we must work to overcome sin and turn to Christ every day of the year, God knows we need a special time each year when we give concerted effort to these spiritual endeavors. So before Advent passes you by, heed the words of the Baptist and take some time to examine your conscience thoroughly. Perhaps use a detailed list of the Ten Commandments or the Seven Capital Sins. Once you do that, seek out an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Doing so is essential to a fruitful Advent season.Once you thoroughly repent of the sins you struggle with the most right now, turn to the Savior of the World with special attentiveness to the miracle of the Incarnation this Advent. Spend time adoring the God Who came to us in the form of a little child. Meditate on this Gift. Gaze at a nativity scene prayerfully. Read the Scripture passages about the birth of Christ. Close your eyes and imagine yourself there at His birth.Reflect, today, upon this twofold exhortation from John and apply it to your Advent preparations. Cleanse your soul in a special way from all sin this Advent. Then prayerfully ponder and meditate upon the reality we are preparing to celebrate. As John says, allow the Christ Child to truly “baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” through your deepening devotion and prayer this Advent. My dear Jesus, please help me to see my sins as You see them. Help me to be attentive to every sinful action I commit and even those smaller sins of omission. As I ponder my sin, please draw me to Your mercy and grace so that I can then open the eyes of my soul more deeply to see You and to adore You more completely this Advent. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved.
