Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe movie Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, tells the story of a well respected general in the Roman Army, who sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery. Maximus fights for his freedom and those he has become friends with as fellow Gladiators. The theme of this Sunday's readings are about battle. Our first reading from the book of Daniel mentions a call to “Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people.” St. Michael and the angels go into battle on our behalf to fight for our spiritual freedom as we do not contend primarily with the flesh and blood, but with the principalities and powers of the underworld. In this episode we talk about how the Bible is a means to the end of knowing Jesus more intimately, and we look at one specific practice we can do to approach the Scriptures this way.NET footnote on Psalm 23:6 and the word "follow" (or "pursue"): "The use of רָדַף (radaf, “pursue, chase”) with טוֹב וָחֶסֶד (tov vakhesed, “goodness and faithfulness”) as subject is ironic. This is the only place in the entire OT where either of these nouns appears as the subject of this verb רָדַף (radaf, “pursue”). This verb is often used to describe the hostile actions of enemies. One might expect the psalmist's enemies (see v. 5) to chase him, but ironically God's “goodness and faithfulness” (which are personified and stand by metonymy for God himself) pursue him instead. Jesus describes Himself as the essential "bread of life" from which we can partake to receive eternal life with Him. Every Christian must grasp the understanding that they should nourish themselves with the sustenance He provides rather than merely satisfying worldly cravings.
