The Purpose Conference was first staged in Sydney, Australia in 2015. Today, Purpose is a stand-alone company and community. After a 4-year hiatus, 2022 marks the fourth Purpose event, coming at a time when the movement for social purpose-led business is growing with intensity. It's a movement driven by employees, customers, consumers, investors; people realising that we need to accelerate the pace of change and business is the means in which to do this most directly. In this episode, our guest is Sally Hill, founder of Purpose and a long-time advocate of responsible and sustainable business. She is a a leader, thinker and doer in the world of purpose-driven business. Sally founded Wildwon, one of Australia's first B Corps and established the Purpose Conference in 2015. Sally curates the Purpose program and is the connector of Purpose's partners, community and team. Immediately prior to rebooting Purpose in 2022, Sally worked with Climate 200, bringing business on board to support the historic 2022 ‘climate election' result. You can get a taste of our interview here: Sally shares her journey from GetUp campaign co-ordinator, through various CSR and sustainability roles, to WWF, to launching her own experiential agency, Wildwon and launching Purpose Conference. Her journey continues taking her to a number of roles including NSW Circular and Climate 200, before returning to Purpose to where she is today. She shares some of her learnings from these various roles and how they have contributed to her thinking and approach today Sally explains that while government is driving change, the pace is slow. This influences her belief that while business is the cause of many of society's problems, harnessing business and capitalism to solve the issues is the best opportunity we have to do it at an accelerated pace and at scale She shares some stats from recent BUPA research about Gen Z workers attitudes to businesses demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments We talk about the lack of employee engagement in workplaces in Australia and New Zealand and the impact this is having on businesses, workplaces and the economy Sally highlights some of the speakers that will be at Purpose and the innovations they are creating in service of solving big societal issues She shares her hopes and aspirations for what the Purpose Conference can achieve We talk about the link between the business world and government policy and the innovation opportunities this opens up

Meet Sally Hill Sally is the Head of Engagement at NSW Circular and an experienced leader in the "for purpose" space. We talked about the importance of making space for purpose centred conversations, the power of small business and entrepreneurship when it comes to making the world a better place, and how the circular economy will help us all. Here are some links to some of the resources we discussed: The NSW Circular website The website of the Purpose Conference (RIP) William McDonnagh's Cradle to Cradle (book) Paul Hawken's The Ecology of Commerce (book) Tyson Yunkaporta's Sand Talk (book)
Sally Hill Mills learned to write children's books by writing with children, as a creative writing teacher in elementary schools in Albuquerque. She learned from kids what keeps them interested in a story – relatable characters, obstacles that have to be overcome, and action. Her first book, Jimmy: Toughest. Dog. Ever. grew out of Mills' experience as a special education teacher. She saw that kids who left the room for “special” classes or who had visible disabilities feared being labeled and not belonging to the larger group. When her real-life dog died, Mills realized that, as hard as it would be, her dog's death offered an opportunity to take the character, Jimmy, on another, even more, difficult journey: through grief and loss into recovery and re-connection. In her second book, Jimmy: Toughest Times Ever Mills drew upon her own experiences with childhood grief to write the book. Kirkus called this book, “A lovely, resonant, child-appropriate tale about loss and the cycle of grief and healing.”

Sometimes the hardest thing in business is to make those gutsy moves. This is one of the core lessons learned by entrepreneur Sally Hill, founder of digital experience and events outfit Wildwon. Sally describes how it was a bold move to start the business, but laments not backing her entrepreneurial purpose early enough. She says her greatest business learning came from taking risky leaps. Two-and-a-half years since launching, Wildwon now hosts innovation festivals for large corporate firms like financial services company AMP. Sally credits the calibre of Wildwon’s clientele to their keen and successful efforts in social media marketing and content marketing. She offers social media advice to other small business looking for a fresh marketing incentive. Listen in to discover why anger and frustration is the perfect recipe for a unique business purpose and why wherever there’s lemons, there’s lemonade.
On this episode of People of Purpose, Johanna speaks with Sally Hill about hosting Edward Snowden on his first Australian panel, the positive movement changing business as usual, and the process for creating meaningful experiences in every event produced by the team at Wildwon Projects.
Sally Hill, cofounder of Wildwon.com.au is one of the creative thinkers speaking at the 2013 Vivid Sydney festival. In this interview she explains what it takes to create experiences that change behaviour and thinking, all the while changing the world.
