Of all contemporary Cape Verdeans, Cesaria Evora, "the Queen of the Morna" made the biggest impression internationally. However the first Cape Verdean to grace the American imagination was the harpooner Dagoo in Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851). Cape Verdeans first arrived in United States as whalers in the late 1700's and have been coming ever since, bringing a distinctive Portuguese-African Kriolu flavor to communities across Southern New England and beyond. We'll take a step back in time and look at the rich cultural life of Cape Verdean neighborhoods, where great bands played mornas and coladeiras at local social clubs. Our principle guide for this program will be historian Marilyn Halter, author of “Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants, 1860-1965.” She'll take us through the years as the Cape Verdean community navigated the turbulent waters of opportunity and identity in America long before the age of American multiculturalism. Then we'll jump ahead and explore current trends from the far-flung Diaspora's thriving music scene, ranging from hip-busting funaná to sleek cabo-zouk. All along, we'll be hearing from Cape Verdean-American musicians, from old-time guitar master Freddy Silva to rapper Mo Green, as they reflect on immigration, nostalgia, heritage, and what it means to be Cape Verdean in the United States. There are several important topics discussed in this episode including a short segment on the cicadas, an alternative effective way to know when a tornado will hit your area, a new color coded system that will be used this Summer by the National Weather Service and mentions the upper limit of heat that the human body could endure.  In this episode we discuss an intense but short lived 3 day heatwave over South Texas, Mexico and to a lesser extent other parts of the Gulf Coast. This heatwave is from Tuesday - Thursday May 6th - May 8th 2024. In this episode we read a little from The "Washington Post" which discussed record warmth from Mexico to Southern New England. This episode also discusses an updated system that the National Weather Service will be using to publicize heat dangers. This episode discusses some of the heat indices and very dangerous Wet Bulb Globe temperatures that are occuring in Southeastern Texas. This episode discusses the way to measure wet bulb temperature which is slightly different from wet bulb globe temperature. It should be pointed out that the way to measure the dew point is a little different than wet bulb temperature (it is a mistake to say that they are the same, this is a correction from what was mentioned in this episode).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weather-with-enthusiasm--4911017/support.

Born and raised in CT, her focus has been in the rich history of strange and spooky occurrences in New England.     Long before Europeans ever stepped foot in the New World, the legends of pukwudgies were already quite robust. Pukwudgies, also known as bagwajinini, were said to live in the wilderness throughout North America. Native Americans believed that pukwudgies were creatures that had once lived in harmony with humans but had turned against them. They featured in the folklore of diverse tribes, from the Wampanoag tribe of Massachusetts and Southern New England to the Algonquian tribe of the Great Lakes region. And according to various legends, it was best to leave the creatures alone.   Pukwudgie translates to “person of the wilderness.” They were said to be small creatures, ranging from knee-height to about three feet tall, with human-like features, yet sporting larger ears, noses, and fingers. Their skin has been described as grey and smooth, and they have often been compared to trolls and goblins. The small creatures also have a variety of tricks up their sleeves to taunt or harm humans.

The most impactful weather will be throughportions of southern New England west through the Catskills, Southern Tierof New York/northern Pennsylvania, and southward through the Appalachianswhere accumulating snow is expected. The snow will likely be heaviest forportions of Southern New England and higher elevations of the southernAppalachians, where Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for totalaccumulations generally between 4-8", with more moderate totals closer to2-4" elsewhere. Otherwise, rain showers will be possible for the OhioValley and southern Mid-Atlantic with a chance for a light wintry mix forthe Lower Great Lakes, with little to no accumulations anticipated.Precipitation should taper off from southwest to northeast through the dayMonday as the systems moves out into the Atlantic.Conditions across the rest of the central and eastern U.S. will remainmostly dry. Some light to moderate rain/snow showers will dropsoutheastward from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and into theUpper Ohio Valley and Appalachians late Monday night and into the dayTuesday with a clipper-like system. Any accumulations should remainlimited to a few inches of snow for higher elevations of the centralAppalachians. The West will be quiet too besides for some shower chancesin the Pacific Northwest as a series of Pacific waves pass by. A moreimpactful Atmospheric River event is expected for the West Coast laterthis week just beyond the current forecast period, though there is achance some heavier rain could begin for portions of northern California/southwestern Oregon Tuesday evening. Broad upper-level ridging over the West beginning to shift/expand eastward will keep high temperatures above average by 10-20 degrees for most of the country early this week. The greatest anomalies will be in the Northern/Central Plains where highs in the 40s, 50s, and even some low 60sare upwards of 25-30 degrees above average. Highs along the West Coast will be quite anomalously warm too, with 60s for the Pacific Northwest/northern California and 70s for southern California. The benefits of open water swimming are widely felt and observed but not yet fully documented by the scientific community, as they combine the effects of immersion in nature, cold water and strenuous exercise all at one time.  “It actually does change your pulse and it changes our physiology as humans,” says our protagonist, Atlantic Annie. “And it's apparently activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which I have come to understand over the last 10 years, is our relaxation response, activated when we sleep, when we're with our favorite pet, with a lover. And I was getting that by swimming.” For Annie these benefits are particularly important because of childhood trauma which surfaced as full-blown PTSD some years later as an adult. She has since  been successfully treating this chronic anxiety for two decades now, adding in open water swimming over the past ten years.  “I love the way I feel after, and I love the experience itself," Annie tells us after a swim at her favorite spot along the Southern New England shore. “And I haven't found many sports where I feel such a sense of calm.” Annie is far from alone in feeling these benefits, according to our expert this episode, Dr. Heather Massey, a lecturer in Physiology at the University of Portsmouth (UK) and an avid open water swimmer. “People have sent me their Garmin watch information about their resting heart rates,” Dr. Massey says, “and told me when their periods of regular outdoor swimming have been compared to when they haven't swam outdoors.”  Dr. Massey theorizes this calming effect has to do with a well documented phenomenon known as the Mammalian Diving Reflex. “Cold water swimming is  what we call a perturbation, and it totally disrupts the status quo within the body,” she explains. “It's putting the body in a position where it needs to react to the stimulus of cold water.” Open water swimming has serious risks and should not be undertaken alone or without prior medical consultation. But swimming safely against a small amount of potential risk may paradoxically have a calming effect on open water swimmers like Atlantic Annie and others with anxiety issues.  Tune in to find out more about the calm within the storm of open water swimming this episode, “PTSD & Open Water Swimming.”  My Body Odyssey is a Fluent Knowledge production. No, it's not a side effect of the Thanksgiving food coma, it's Episode 122 of the podcast! We kick off the episode with a look back at a Southern New England staple of decades past. For those in the area of a certain age, Angelo's Supermarket was destination shopping. From its beginnings in the Tedeschi family and from under the thumb of Stop and Shop, Angelo's carved out its own legacy that is still fondly looked back upon even thirty years after its name was erased from history. You've heard of middle children, but middle towns? This week's Road Trip showcases Middletown, Rhode Island. The actual 'middle town' on Aquidneck Island, it is passed through by thousands headed to and from Newport. However, it is filled with attractions, both natural and other, and is deserving of its segment this week.Despite it feeling like it's still a new thing, the internet has been going strong for more than a quarter century. For all of the improvements that it has undergone, there were some major growing pains when it first came around. We then shift our focus towards the presence of Orthodox Christianity in Southern New England. Here, we touch on the history, unique cultural elements, and challenges faced by the Orthodoxy in America. Our conversation takes a fascinating turn as we dive into the role of storytelling in spreading the Gospel and the insular nature of certain Protestant groups. In our final act, we introduce you to the world of Christian nationalist Andrew Torba, exploring his ideology and its implications. This episode is about the trading between the Dutch of New Netherland, the English first of Plymouth and then of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the Algonquian and Iroquoian tribes in the region during the 1620s and 1630s.  These relationships were important, both to the profitability of settlement for the Dutch and the English, and because they so destabilized the balance of power among the tribes and the Europeans that they would eventually lead to the very ugly Pequot War of 1636-38. The indigenous ceremonial currency, wampum, sat at the center of this trade, and we take a first look at its monetization by the Dutch and then the English.
