What does it take to move from mere survival to building a life of purpose, impact, and lasting success? In this episode of The Power of After, we explore the extraordinary journey of Charles van Kessler—a man whose life began in unimaginable hardship during World War II, surviving the Holocaust. After losing his entire family as a toddler and surviving years of severe malnutrition, orphanage life, and even the streets of Amsterdam, Charles made a promise that if he survived, he would dedicate his life to helping children facing similar suffering. Decades later, that promise became a mission-driven business and nonprofit dedicated to serving children in desperate situations. But this story is about more than survival—it's about resilience, discipline, and the principles that helped Charles remain mentally sharp, purpose-focused, and determined through every season of life. We'll discuss how those principles became the foundation not only for personal healing, but for building a business that fuels a greater mission. I want to alert you, so you don’t miss out on expert analysis and insider perspectives from my guests who provide tips that can help you uplift the community, improve your financial planning, motivation, or advice on how to be a successful entrepreneur. Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Cedric Walker. Interview Purpose The purpose of this interview is to highlight visionary entrepreneurship, cultural ownership, and perseverance, using Cedric Walker’s founding of Universoul Circus as a case study in building a purpose‑driven business that uplifts community while achieving long‑term success. The conversation emphasizes how research, resilience, cultural authenticity, and belief in a vision can overcome skepticism and systemic barriers. It also positions Universoul Circus as more than entertainment—it is a multigenerational cultural institution rooted in Black excellence, inclusion, and family unity. Major Themes & Key Takeaways 1. Vision Comes Before Validation Cedric Walker shares that the vision for Universoul Circus came in the early 1990s, long before there was widespread belief that a Black‑owned circus centered on performers of color could succeed. Despite strong skepticism from both Black and white investors, Walker trusted the research, the cultural need, and his instinct. Key takeaway: Vision must lead—even when validation comes much later. 2. Research Turns Ideas Into Reality Walker did not rely on inspiration alone. He immersed himself in research, studying Black entertainment history, circus traditions, and global performance art. This foundation allowed him to confidently build a unique, sustainable model rather than copying existing formats. Key takeaway: Preparation and research are critical when challenging industry norms. 3. Cultural Authenticity Is a Competitive Advantage Universoul Circus was created to be authentically Black, not as a niche product, but as a universal experience rooted in joy, music, athleticism, and storytelling. Walker emphasizes that authenticity—not adaptation—is what attracts diverse audiences. Key takeaway: When you are fully yourself, your work transcends culture and geography. 4. Family‑Centered Entertainment Fills a Real Need A defining goal of Universoul Circus is to create an experience where multiple generations can sit together and all feel seen, engaged, and celebrated. Walker intentionally designed the show so grandparents, parents, and children could enjoy the same experience simultaneously. Key takeaway: Businesses that bring families together create lasting emotional value. 5. Evolution Without Losing Identity Over time, Universoul Circus evolved—from including animals to becoming a modern, high‑energy, animal‑free production—adapting to changing laws, audience preferences, and cultural shifts. However, Walker notes that the soul of the circus never changed. Key takeaway: Successful brands evolve operationally without abandoning their purpose. 6. Global Talent, Long‑Term Investment Walker details how Universoul Circus sources talent from around the world, including Ethiopia, Cuba, China, and the Caribbean. Performers often undergo years of training and development before appearing in the show, reinforcing Universoul’s commitment to excellence and safety. Key takeaway: Excellence requires patience, investment, and a long‑term mindset. 7. Representation Changes Perception Universoul Circus intentionally showcases elite Black performers in spaces where they were historically unseen or undervalued. Walker explains that representation is not symbolic—it reshapes belief and possibility for both audiences and performers. Key takeaway: Representation is not aesthetic; it is transformative. 8. Perseverance Creates Legacy Celebrating over 30 years of operation, Universoul Circus stands as proof that staying committed to purpose through adversity leads to longevity. Walker sees the circus as a living legacy and a foundation for future cultural innovation. Key takeaway: Longevity is built by staying the course when others doubt the destination. Notable Quotes “Vision comes to you like that—you have to trust it.” “Nobody believed it would work, but I felt it in my gut and in my research.” “Our goal was to stay authentically Black—that’s what transcends culture.” “We wanted something where a grandmother, a father, and a child could all enjoy the same show.” “Nothing you see is by chance. Everything has meaning.” “We invested years into these performers before they ever hit our stage.” “This is more than a circus—it’s a family reunion under the big top.” Overall Message Cedric Walker’s interview is a masterclass in cultural entrepreneurship. It demonstrates how creativity, courage, and conviction can transform an idea into an enduring institution. His journey with Universoul Circus reinforces that purpose, preparation, and persistence are the true drivers of success—especially when building something that challenges expectations. The conversation ultimately affirms that when a business is rooted in authenticity and community, it can achieve both economic sustainability and cultural impact. #SHMS #BEST #STRAWSteve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Companies built on love outperform the S&P 500 by 14 to 1. Conscious capitalism, stakeholder leadership, healing organizations — Raj Sisodia proved it with data, then spent a year in the Himalayas and the Amazon proving it on himself.Raj Sisodia, Co-Founder of the Conscious Capitalism movement and author of sixteen books including Firms of Endearment and The Healing Organization, grew up across four countries and eight schools before the age of 18. He trained as an electrical engineer in India because that was what you did if you were good at math. He stumbled into a PhD at Columbia almost by accident — following seven friends to pick up a GMAT application and ending up the only one who made it to New York. From there, he built a body of research that fundamentally challenged Milton Friedman's doctrine that the only business of business is profit. Then, at 60, he turned that same rigour inward: pilgrimages to the high Himalayas, silent retreats with Peter Senge, and the painful reckoning with a father who once pointed a gun at him. This conversation runs close to what I have lived. When I watched Satya Nadella introduce "model, coach, care" at Microsoft — a framework Raj references directly — I saw firsthand what happens when a leader chooses purpose over power. And Raj's conviction that business must actively heal what it has broken echoes what drove me to create Live for Good: the belief that the organizations we build should leave people stronger, not depleted. In our conversation, we explore: → Why companies that spend 95% less on marketing than competitors have the highest customer loyalty — and what that reveals about extraction-based capitalism → The four pillars of Conscious Capitalism — higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, conscious culture — and the specific acronyms (HEALING, SPICY, SELFLESS) Raj uses to make them actionable → The Bob Chapman story: how one CEO refused to lay off a single employee during the 2008 crisis by asking "What would a family do?" — and emerged stronger than every competitor → His year of conscious awakening at 60 — pilgrimages, silent retreats, ayahuasca in the Amazon — and what four women forced him to confront about his own unhealed trauma → What conscious capitalism demands of AI: the marriage of humanity's most important idea with its most powerful technology — and why the market will ultimately correct for unconscious companies
A powerful reminder that aging is not a limitation but a privilege that can unlock your greatest purpose. This conversation dives into the entrepreneurial journey of a woman who transformed personal loss, creativity, and life experience into a meaningful business helping women over 50 rediscover purpose. From early creative ventures to a life-changing layoff at 50, her story reveals how trusting yourself, embracing your past, and taking small courageous steps can lead to clarity, confidence, and impact. The discussion highlights the importance of mindset, storytelling, and recognizing the value of your lived experience in building a business that truly matters. Your next chapter is not behind you, it is waiting for you to claim it. When you start seeing aging as a gift, everything changes. Find out More about Patricia: https://PatriciaDrain.com
The Conscious Edge Podcast: Redefining Wealth as a Whole Human Experience
Almost a hundred episodes in, Alecia St. Germain finally says out loud the part of her work she has been carrying for a very long time. In one of her most personal episodes yet, Alecia St. Germain finally gives the soul pillar of her company, The Conscious Edge, a methodology and a name out loud. She shares what soul purpose is, where it comes from, and what happened when she stopped doing everything by the book and started paying attention to her soul instead. That's when the map encoded in her birth name finally made sense. She walks through her own chart. The codes that explained her early career rise, her lost voice, her debt, and her path back to alignment. And she makes the case for why the soul piece so many entrepreneurs hold privately is the piece that changes everything when it finally gets to belong in the work. Curious what a soul purpose chart actually looks like? It's posted in the show notes at consciousedge.com/ep098 with a full breakdown of what it all means Let's connect on Instagram → @aleciastg
Timothy Henry and Raj Sisodia interview Harvard professor and author Rebecca Henderson about her book Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire and why purpose-driven, multi-stakeholder firms can outperform yet remain hard to implement because they require deep investments in strategy, structure, and human systems. To see the full video podcast, check out the Conscious Capitalists YouTube channel hereHenderson connects climate change, inequality, and democratic erosion to shareholder primacy, arguing for stronger democratic institutions, reducing money in politics, and grassroots rebuilding of trust. She emphasizes leaders' inner work, “kindness and math,” and the ability to disagree respectfully as foundations for high-trust, innovative organizations—especially important in an AI era. Henderson recounts her shift from engineering to organizational change and climate work, lessons from board service, and her teaching evolution from “Reimagining Capitalism” to “Reweaving Ourselves,” including the role of retreats in sustaining courageous leadership. If you enjoy this podcast, would you consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts. What if your core wounds aren't things to conquer, but parts of yourself that just need to be seen, heard, and understood? And what if the reason manifestation feels effortless in your imagination but impossible in action has nothing to do with motivation…and everything to do with your nervous system? This week, Jessica sits down with somatic therapist and parts work expert Sarah Baldwin for a conversation that will completely reframe how you understand manifestation. Together, they explore why your nervous system calls the shots on what you attract, and how the self-protective patterns you developed as a child are quietly keeping you from stepping into your purpose, relationships, visibility, and expansion as an adult. Using Somatic Experiencing & Internal Family Systems (IFS) and spiritual practices, Sarah explains how our minds are made up of different "parts" — inner voices or emotional states, each with their own fears and roles. The parts that learned to protect you in childhood don't disappear; they keep running in the background, quietly shaping what you believe you're allowed to have. Unblocking starts with getting curious about those parts rather than fighting them, and learning to become a loving, attuned parent to your inner child. With nervous system regulation and parts work, you'll move through fear without forcing it, gradually expanding your capacity to hold more goodness. If manifestation feels clear in theory but sticky in practice, this episode will show you why, and guide you in softening the walls that have been keeping you from the life you've been waiting for. When identity is clear, influence compounds. You'll hear real talk about:Why consistency—not motivation—is the real differentiatorHow entrepreneurs sabotage growth by expecting success to be easyThe mindset shift required to stop outsourcing responsibility for resultsWhy brand evolution must start at the identity level, not the surface levelHow value creation, service, and profit must coexist for sustainable impactThis episode is for founders, leaders, and creators who are done chasing shortcuts and ready to build something that lasts—from the inside out.

At 42, divorced three times, financially depleted, and convinced he had failed, John reached a place of complete surrender. He didn't have a plan. He didn't have answers. He only had a question that changed everything as he dealt with a massive heart attack:Do you want to stay or do you want to go?This conversation explores how purpose is often revealed after identity collapses—not through striving, but through letting go. John's story is a powerful reminder that purpose isn't tied to credentials, success, or certainty. Ryan Emmons entered one of the most competitive and criticized industries on the planet—bottled water—with little more than a U-Haul and a vision. Going up against billion-dollar giants like Fiji and Smartwater, Ryan didn't just build another beverage brand; he built a mission. By betting everything on a "triple bottom line" philosophy—People, Planet, Profit—he proved that a purpose-driven company could disrupt a saturated market and command consumer loyalty in a way the big corporations couldn't.In this interview, Ryan Emmons sits down with Ryan Atkinson to reveal how he scaled Waiakea from a local hustle into one of the fastest-growing premium water brands in the world. You'll learn his scrappy "consignment" strategy for getting onto shelves without paying massive slotting fees, how to turn environmental sustainability into an economic advantage that lowers overhead, and why he believes naivety is an entrepreneur's greatest asset.Whether you are launching a CPG product or trying to differentiate your service in a crowded industry, this episode offers a masterclass in resilience and branding. Ryan breaks down exactly how to build a business that stands for something, keeps employees loyal, and generates massive growth without sacrificing your values. Tune in to discover why playing the long game is the ultimate competitive advantageTakeaways:- Build your business on a "triple bottom line" philosophy—People, Planet, Profit—from day one, as it is nearly impossible to authentically integrate deep purpose into a company's DNA after investors are involved.- Leverage a purpose-driven mission to increase employee retention, as high-performing talent is more likely to stay and work harder when they can see the tangible impact of the company's social initiatives.- Prove your product's sales velocity by starting with "mom and pop" shops on a consignment model before attempting to pitch major distributors or large retail chains.- Avoid direct competition with billion-dollar CPG conglomerates by targeting specific retailers where you can secure equal shelf space without paying exorbitant slotting fees.- Embrace manual self-distribution in the early stages—even if it requires renting U-Hauls and working overnight shifts—to maintain control over logistics and keep overhead low.- Reframe environmental initiatives as efficiency strategies rather than just expenses, as reducing material usage, water waste, and energy often leads to significant margin gains.- Justify a slight price premium by positioning your product as an "affordable luxury" that allows consumers to support a cause they believe in without breaking the bank.- Protect your company's mission during scaling by legally incorporating as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which enshrines your social and environmental standards into the corporate bylaws.- Use your lack of industry experience as a strategic asset, as naivety allows you to be fearless and attempt innovations that industry veterans might deem impossible.- Focus on resilience and building a legacy business you want to lead for decades, rather than chasing a quick "exit" or overnight success in the volatile CPG market.Tags: Product Development, Retail Goods, Bottled Water, Business Scaling, Startup, Business Growth Resources:Grow your business today: https://links.upflip.com/the-business-startup-and-growth-blueprint-podcast Connect with Ryan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-emmons-8709871b

A former flight attendant who pivoted in her 30s, she now helps practitioners grow healing businesses rooted in purpose and service. 3 Power Takeaways Leap early; build skills on the way. Use "no-brainer" offers to get in the room and learn from pros. (20:07–22:36) Let purpose lead the model. When work sits at the intersection of talent, joy, and need (ikigai), consistency becomes easy. (37:26–38:24) Grow through connection, not discounts. Reward referrers; keep pricing strong; become the story people share. (28:55–31:13) Main Topics, Timestamps, Explanations & Notable Quotes Bold reinvention & "no-brainer" apprenticeships — 20:07–22:36 What it means: Proximity compounds. Offering flexible, unpaid assisting to a top practitioner compresses the learning curve, reveals real-world systems, and creates industry credibility faster than solo trial-and-error. Quote: "You don't have to even pay me… I will clean, vacuum… It's a win-win, a no-brainer offer." Mayumi Ikigai as a business operating system — 37:26–38:24 What it means: Aligning work with what one loves, does well, and what people will pay for transforms effort into enthusiasm; sustainable energy becomes a competitive advantage over hustle-based growth. Quote: "Work doesn't feel like a job… I wake up every morning excited about who I'm going to serve. That's ikigai." Mayumi Referral engines beat discounts — 28:55–31:13 What it means: Paying clients (via generous thank-you credits) to advertise outperforms cutting prices for newcomers; it preserves brand value, attracts ideal fits, and turns great results into free marketing. Quote: "New clients come with the regular price… but for you, as a thank you for the referral, I give 50% off next time." Mayumi Extra Gems (quick hits) Test the move with logistics smarts: Pre-paying six months' rent to secure housing without local job history shows how creative terms remove gatekeeper friction. (10:01–10:32) Mayumi Courageous partner talk: Ask the life-defining question early—"What do you really want?"—then build the plan around it. (05:24–06:22) Mayumi Permission to start messy: Feeling nothing in early energy-work classes didn't stop the pursuit; the right modality (Access Bars, then Quantum Touch) clicked later. On this episode of the Stuck In My Mind Podcast, host Wize El Jefe welcomes the multi-faceted strategist and entrepreneur Angela Lewis for a conversation overflowing with clarity, connection, and unexpected golden nuggets. What starts as a humorous mix-up – with Wize thinking Angela was a PR pro due to her knack for making connections – quickly unfolds into a powerful exploration of what it really takes to build, scale, and revitalize a business or brand from the inside out. Angela shares the real story behind her journey as the founder of Savvy Designs and The Pink Elephant Solution, underscoring her relentless drive to help businesses, creatives, and entrepreneurs not just survive but truly thrive. She unpacks how her background in art, consulting, and design evolved into strategic brand-building and developing accessible platforms to help businesses at every financial level lay solid foundations. Listeners get a window into Angela's education at Harvard, her ongoing commitment to self-learning, and her mission to pass on deep-rooted business principles so that others can grow resilient organizations. Together, Angela and Wize discuss the common traps leaders fall into—like launching businesses without foundational skills or tactical structure, and failing to see the difference between an LLC and true liability protection. Angela's advice is sharp: invest early in strategic accounting and legal support, and always focus on learning before leaping. But the conversation moves way beyond business nuts and bolts. Angela talks about the art of connecting people, the difference between transactional exchanges and lasting relationships, and how one's personal journey and emotional health feed directly into entrepreneurial success. Wize opens up about his own life: losing loved ones, overcoming personal struggles, rediscovering his purpose through podcasting, and the true power of supporting others and being supportive in return. Whether it's how to build an “elevator pitch,” navigate a rapidly changing business climate, make crucial pivots, or the importance of celebrating personal milestones and self-betterment, Angela delivers invaluable insights with warmth and contagious energy. If you're an entrepreneur, leader, or creative who feels “stuck in your mind,” this episode is a masterclass in finding clarity, embracing connection, and choosing purpose-driven momentum over busywork. Tune in for a conversation that doesn't just drop gems—it hands you the blueprint for building your own business legacy and living boldly, one intentional action at a time. Don't miss this episode if you want tactical business wisdom, real talk about life's rollercoasters, and inspiration to get out of your own way. It's exhausting trying to do everything “right” when every headline, product, and influencer tells you something different. One day it's carbs, the next it's cortisol, and somehow your to-do list now includes cold plunges, fasting windows, and niche supplements. For entrepreneurs especially, the pressure to optimize every part of life turns wellness into another hustle—measured, marketed, and rarely sustainable. And after all that effort, you're still tired, still stressed, and quietly wondering if the whole system is just built to keep you chasing your tail. Mark Young is the founder and CEO of Ryze Agency, a South Florida marketing firm for health and wellness brands, and leads a medical device company focused on blood pressure reduction. He's also the author of Date Your Clients and host of the Performance Driven Living podcast where he shares practical health and business insights. Today, he explores how entrepreneurs can blend nutrition, storytelling, and AI to build stronger wellness ventures. He offers biohacking tips and marketing strategies that prioritize core health habits over quick fixes. His talk wove together tech, science, and narrative for lasting impact. Stay tuned! Quotes: “When people are not dealing with the healthiest version of themselves, they're living a life mostly subjugated to whatever health issues arise.” “People don't care about you. They care about how you impact them.” “People who are smart, understand critical thinking skills, and know how to adapt are going to be more productive and successful than ever imaginable.” Resources: RYZE AGENCY | Every brand is built by a team.
