This week I reflect on a number of themes around growing our good work. The idea of starting small, rather than not starting at all and accepting and embracing the fact that our purpose will grow and change over time. This theme was inspired from my last episode's conversation with Danielle Malik who spoke about feeling she wanted to 'up-leve' on the problems she was trying to solve through her work. It's easy to feel that we are never doing enough in out good work and we can always be doing better. I encourage you though to see this desire to do more as positive. That you are only growing and evolving as a change maker - wanting to do more to help others and the world around you. This week I reflect on the theme of howe we measure our own worth. The topic of came out of my conversation with last episode's guest, Sheldon Walters of Splinter and Callous. Worth is something that is often measured in financial terms and we often judge ourselves and our experience on how they have contributed to our worth on the financial scale. Yet the things we truly value are not always financial. So why do we find it so difficult to pull out those areas of 'worth' that are measured on a different scale? Perhaps learning or relationships or love? Join me as I explore this idea of worth and pose some ideas to you to think about how you can see your worth via values rather than money. In this episode I also mention a FREE CONSCIOUS BUSINESS MEDITATION. Come and download it at http://bit.ly/conscious-business-meditation. or CLICK HERE to download. Sheldon Walters - Crafting Personal Worth Beyond Money My guest on the podcast today is Sheldon Walters. Sheldon began his career as an IT Engineer, but felt he was missing out on something by working in an office all day. Spending long hours working on abstract projects with no tangible outcomes, he developed a longing to do something hands-on. Unable to find a place that taught the skills he was looking to build, with the flexibility to do it at a time, place and pace that fitted into his life, he decided to do something about it. So together with a colleague and friend, Mike Simpson, they founded Splinter & Callous. Opening permanently in mid 2016, Splinter & Callous is a wood and metal workshop where people find their inner maker with expert guidance from master Craftsmen. It's a communal place where everyday people can learn real skills while building well-crafted things and connecting with others across a workbench. In contrast to the office environment many people find themselves in, Splinter & Callous gives you a dose of the tangible, and cultivates a practical skillset. Most importantly, it is helping office workers improve their mental well-being through hands on activity. This week I reflect on the theme of conscious transitions. The topic of transitions came out of my conversation with last episode's guest, Andrew Newman. Transitions are an important part of our life and growth. They are the messy middle between where we are and where we want to be. It is easy to want to rush through them, but often there is much learning and growth to be done within those periods. Also, are we ever really not in some kind of transition? I explore the idea that in fact we may always be moving from one of kind of transition to the next in whatever way. The Good Work Revolution Podcast is for people who are creating businesses, shaping new careers, building social enterprises. Who are creating new ways of working, embracing a multi-passionate work life, working their way, exploring entrepreneurship, changing organisations for the better and so much more. My guest today in Andrew Newman, founder of the Conscious Bedtime Story Club. While expecting a working life as a retail jeweller in the family business in south Africa, the tug of something more always seemed to be there for Andrew. Shifting from everything from community development making hammocks, Andrew ended up following his deep longing for connection and his love of all things spiritual in a 10 year study of healing. His portfolio of work includes running a therapy practice as a Barbara Brennan Healing Science Practitioner, inspiring and publishing over 1500 donated poems as the PoemCatcher, volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity in the township of South Africa and directing Edinburgh's Festival of Spirituality and Peace. He is a qualified Non-Dual Kabbalistic Healer and has been actively involved in men's work though Mankind Project since 2006.His latest project, The Conscious Bedtime Story Club, is a culmination of all of these areas of experience, intended to bring parent and child into deeper connection and spiritual union with themselves and each other. Join Andrew and I as we discuss themes of the one, expressing your inner self, setting intentions, transitions, inclusivity and the importance of the last 20 minutes of the day. This week I reflect on an idea that came out of my conversation with Annie Carter of Eve Studio - that to create balance in our lives, sometimes we need to add something in. I go on to explore the idea that there may be no such thing as work/life balance and perhaps work/life integration is more realistic. Balance is different for all of us. Only we can know what to add or take a way to create contentment, fulfilment and joy. Adding something in however, will often be more appropriate than taking something away and can actually open up the space for more of what we want. The Good Work Revolution Podcast is for people who are creating businesses, shaping new careers, building social enterprises. Who are creating new ways of working, embracing a multi-passionate work life, working their way, exploring entrepreneurship, changing organisations for the better and so much more. This podcast is a reflection on last week's episode with Jacqui Lewis. I explore two ideas Jacqui and I spoke about: 1. That we should be building our work around the life we want to live (and not the other way around). As we grow up we are always asked what do we want to be? What do we want to do? But we are rarely asked about the kind of life we want to live. Part of the Good Work Revolution is about asking ourself this question. We can't just do work for the sake of others and forget about ourselves. 2. That there are some kinds of success that actually do not serve us. It is easy to find ourselves on a path where we are experiencing success - but success defined by what and who? If we are to think about what we really want in life - is it really success? It can be incredibly difficult to walk away from the kinds of success society tells us we should strive for and reach for our own version of success. Both Jacquie's journey and my own have examples of both these points in them. I share some of my own stories, as well as some thoughts on how you might explore this for yourself. The Good Work Revolution Podcast is for people who are creating businesses, shaping new careers, building social enterprises. Who are creating new ways of working, embracing a multi-passionate work life, working their way, exploring entrepreneurship, changing organisations for the better and so much more. Reflecting on last week's episode with Christian Duell, I dive into an idea we explored in our conversation on how our purpose is not fixed. It is something that can bend and change over time. I also look at the idea of using projects to explore your purpose: to approach the idea of finding your purpose as an experiment as opposed to a journey with an end point. Finally, I explore playing with and evolving your purpose as you grow as a person and chip away the parts of you that no longer serve you. The Good Work Revolution Podcast is for people who are creating businesses, shaping new careers, building social enterprises, creating new ways of working, embracing a multi-passionate work life, working their way, exploring entrepreneurship, changing organisations for the better and so much more. Reflecting on last week's conversation with Julie Parter, I delve into the concept of identity and how aligning our work and identity can improve our wellbeing and step us closer to fulfilling and inspiring businesses and careers. "It's just not me". Have you ever used this line about your work? It's something I've heard a lot. So why is this such a big thing? And if our work doesn't feel aligned, what can we do? Or as leaders, managers or employers - what can we do to help our employees with this?
