Welcome to a Brain Wrinkling Wednesday with Fr. Tom Koys. Today Father Koys wrinkles our brain with discussion of the Seamless Garment Analogy applied to the moral issues of today. Is this a proper use of the analogy? Can we apply weights to the issues of the day as a way to apply a hierarchy to the moral issues we confront today? He also looks at Protestant ordination and the consideration that it is not biblical based as he identifies ways the ordination of a Protestant Pastor can come about. He invites you to join the St. James Parish in Lemont for a speaker led presentation on the Dobbs Decision, please see their website for details at https://historicstjames.org St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish

In this episode of Life Matters, Brian explores what's ahead in 2025 and how the election victory of November is merely the beginning. Brian also explained in detail the nature of his recent illness. His congestive heart failure had him hospitalized for three months - a month and a half in intensive care and a month and a half in cardio recovery care. He is now recovering at home. Brian explains that the year ahead includes many challenges, including the very strong push for killing the medically dependent. Eleven jurisdictions across the United States have currently authorized physician assisted killing. These laws are aimed at the emotionally vulnerable as well as the physically challenged and/or financially challenged. Brian admits that he was emotionally vulnerable, and depressed during his hospitalization and brush with death. This made him a candidate for physician assisted suicide in California under current California law. Because the law is no longer an advocate, you must be willing to advocate for vulnerable family and friends. Brian also explained that there is a great misunderstanding of the legal battles ahead for the ProLife cause. As his book, Evil Twins: Roe and Doe, how the Supreme Court Unleashed Medical Killing, makes clear, the real attack on society and culture in Roe was that it instructed doctors to be killers. This cultural and ethical departure in Roe is explicit and even feminist leaders like Ruth Bader Ginsburg concurred: “Roe is not woman centered. It is physician centered.” These decisions instruct doctors to do whatever they see fit and in particular to even kill at their own discretion. Many misunderstand what the Dobbs Decision of 2022 actually did to abortion law. It did not overturn Roe, it merely adjusted aspects of Roe v. Wade. In particular, the federalized compulsion to accept all abortions was removed and it was presented as a states' rights issue. It's a great mistake to present or even view the Right To Life cause as a states' rights issue. This does not address the real ethical, moral and cultural decay that was brought to us by Roe v. Wade. The right to life cause needs to be prepared to speak up for all vulnerable human beings, regardless of their age, and to be on guard regarding the efforts to promote the killing of depressed, vulnerable, and medically dependent persons. In addition, the real issue of protecting vulnerable human lives, and not merely the emotional attraction of helping babies and mothers needs to be understood. Brian also announced that many of his writings will now be readily available online at Substack. See @brianjohnston on Substack.

The topic of reproductive healthcare and access to abortion has emerged as a pivotal point in the weeks and months leading up to the 2024 presidential election in the U.S. In this week's episode of then & now, our guest interviewer Professor Elizabeth O'Brien speaks with Professor Cassia Roth, a historian of Society, Environment, and Health Equity at the University of California, Riverside. Roth's recent book, A Miscarriage of Justice, explores the intersection of reproductive health and legal policy in early 20th-century Brazil. Drawing from her research, Roth highlights parallels between Brazil and the U.S., noting how both countries are undergoing complex shifts in reproductive rights shaped by political and religious landscapes. While some areas of Latin America have seen significant progress toward decriminalizing abortion in recent decades, other countries in the region have imposed increasingly restrictive reproductive policies, underscoring the diversity of legal landscapes across Latin America. The conversation stresses the importance of understanding historical context, such as the role of military regimes and social inequalities, in shaping current reproductive policies. Roth calls for inclusive policies that address the needs of marginalized communities while navigating the ongoing back-and-forth nature of reproductive legislation. Elizabeth O'Brien is an Assistant Professor in the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Department of History, specializing in the history of reproductive health in Mexico. Professor O'Brien is also a member of the cross-field group in the History of Gender and Sexuality. Professor O'Brien's 2023 book on colonialism and reproductive healthcare in Mexico, Surgery and Salvation, received the 2024 Best Book Award from the Nineteenth-Century Section of the Latin American Studies Association. Cassia Roth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Society, Environment, and Health Equity at UC Riverside. Professor Roth is a leading expert in women's reproductive health in Brazil and her acclaimed book, A Miscarriage of Justice, was published by Stanford University Press in 2020. Professor Roth is currently working on a project entitled Birthing Abolition: Enslaved Women's Reproduction and the Gradual End of Slavery in 19th-century Brazil.

For 49 years, from 1973 until 2022, the Supreme Court declared that the US Constitution protected abortion rights. With this precedent overturned, decision making about reproductive rights now resides with state governments. But the court's 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization relied on a partial and inaccurate understanding of American history, and its claims to be a pro-democracy decision were disingenuous. Dobbs is just one example of the court smashing precedents in the last few years. Reproductive healthcare remains a divisive issue in the United States, and once again, abortion is on the ballot in an election nearly one month away. In 2022, the Dobbs Decision took away the constitutional right to privacy and bodily autonomy and gave states increased rights to limit and even outlaw abortions. (Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Supreme Court Decision) The impact of this decision on women and girls resulted in forced births, preventable deaths, and legal prosecution for experiencing miscarriages and crossing state lines to seek necessary reproductive healthcare services. Due to the ever-present need for urgent response to these life-threatening and often life-ending policies, historical perspectives of women's reproductive healthcare may not always be at the forefront of the abortion debate. Today will learn from the life of a prominent 19th-century icon who offered reproductive healthcare services to women for forty years. Nicholas Syrett has written a brilliant portrayal of one of the most famous abortionists of this time in his book, “The Trials of Madame Restell: Nineteenth-Century America's Most Infamous Female Physician and the Campaign to Make Abortion a Crime” (The New Press 2023). Nicholas will share the profundity of her work amidst the scandals and consequences of the time. We will also discuss how this relates to the current state of women's reproductive rights.

Reverend Jim Harden is president and CEO of CompassCare Pregnancy Services in New York. His own center was targeted by abortion terrorism.--Two years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court released their decision in the case known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. This reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. You may recall that when the Dobbs decision was initially leaked, pro-life and pro-family agencies were targeted with firebombs and other forms of violence. One of those targeted was CompassCare Pregnancy Services in Buffalo, New York.--Reverend Harden clarified a very important point up front. He noted that the Dobbs decision did not make abortion illegal. It simply gave the states the right to regulate the procedures. It also galvanized pro-abortion extremists to their cause. The result was that at least 500 pro-life entities were attacked. There was also the weaponization of legislation whereby blue states passed legislation to regulate and-or outlaw certain aspects of pro-life pregnancy care work.--All of this points to the fact that the battle over life is intensifying. So as you review this broadcast you'll hear about the pro-abortion propaganda effort, the medical malpractice of the abortion industry and the death it's causing, the status of the firebombing incident at CompassCare in New York, the hoarding of Mifepristone by Democrat governors and so much more.

Reverend Jim Harden is president and CEO of CompassCare Pregnancy Services in New York. His own center was targeted by abortion terrorism. Two years ago today, the U.S. One of those targeted was CompassCare Pregnancy Services in Buffalo, New York.Reverend Harden clarified a very important point up front. He noted that the Dobbs decision did not make abortion illegal. It simply gave the states the right to regulate the procedures. It also galvanized pro-abortion extremists to their cause. The result was that at least 500 pro-life entities were attacked. There was also the weaponization of legislation whereby blue states passed legislation to regulate and/or outlaw certain aspects of pro-life pregnancy care work. All of this points to the fact that the battle over life is intensifying. So as you review this broadcast you'll hear about the pro-abortion propaganda effort, the medical malpractice of the abortion industry and the death it's causing, the status of the firebombing incident at CompassCare in New York, the hoarding of Mifepristone by Democrat governors and so much more.
Samuel Green with Reason for Life discusses abortion IP on the anniversary of the Dobbs Decision. The White House has an interesting new employee who has made a big splash already.
It’s been two years since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Supreme Court decision that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in the U.S. Since then, 14 states have instituted full bans on the procedure. Now new research shows that states with these bans are seeing fewer residency applications from medical students. Katie Hansen is an administrative chief resident at Oregon Health & Science University. Ian Field is an OB/GYN and the program director for OHSU's OB/GYN residency program. They both join us to share the impact the Dobbs decision has had on schools, communities and healthcare.

What a difference a week makes. Last Senator Claire McCaskill and former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri spoke, the jury was deliberating, and now the contrast of the two incumbents is in stark relief. The pair frame how to talk about running against an opponent found guilty on 34 criminal counts, and how desperate Republicans seem to be-- to undermine our judicial system and call for retribution, just to curry favor with Trump. Then Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, joins to kick off Pride Month and zero in on what issues are most urgent for LGBTQ+ voters. And before signing off, Claire and Jen take a beat to lay out the hard but necessary executive action President Biden took this week to stem the flow of immigrants crossing the border illegally, as the GOP stand idly by.

Sam talks with Merle Hoffman, long-time abortion rights activist and founder of one of the largest abortion clinics in the country, who has just written a memoir chronicling her decades of experience fighting for abortion rights. Get the book here: Choices: A Post Roe Abortion Rights Manifestomerlehoffman.com and choicesmedical.com or on Twitter: @MerleHoffman. For those looking for abortion care visit abortionfinder.org and prochoice.org For funding abortion agencies nationally visit abortionfunds.org. About the book: In the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade and a country divided, a pioneer in the pro-choice movement and women's healthcare offers an unapologetic and authoritative take on abortion and women's right to choose. Merle Hoffman has been at the forefront of the reproductive freedom movement since the 1970s. Three years before the Supreme Court legalized abortion through Roe v. Wade, she helped to establish one of the United States' first abortion centers in Flushing, Queens, and later went on to found Choices, one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive women's medical facilities. For the last five decades, Hoffman has been a steadfast warrior and fierce advocate for every woman's right to choose when and whether or not to be a mother. Now, amidst the aftermath of the Dobbs Decision, Hoffman has carefully compiled her decades of analysis, research, and experience into a tour de force manifesto that sheds light on the catastrophic repercussions of overturning Roe, and what we must do moving forward to ensure the safety and legality of abortion nationally. In Choices, Hoffman expresses her views on where we are and what lies ahead. She covers topics ranging from: revamping the healthcare system to support women's rights; combatting rising authoritarianism; the weaponization of religion; fighting the antis; practicing courage; sabotage from within the movement; and activating the next generation in the fight for reproductive justice. Jenna Ellis and Ryan Helfenbein - Donald Trump addressed his abortion stance, leading to widespread controversy. He stated that whatever states decide “must be the law of the land”. Many conservatives don't believe he took a strong enough stance. Was his speech a way to appease moderates? Josh Hammer and Michael Donnelly - Did the Dobbs decision exclusively allow States to make laws surrounding abortion? Do conservatives need to keep fighting for stricter pro-life laws? Plus the SEC pauses climate disclosure rules as they await a court challenge from multiple republican attorneys general. William Bock - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has essentially banned transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. Does this ruling put any pressure on the NCAA to follow suit?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In their frenzy to completely control women, the Republican party is attacking every aspect of our reproductive health. This includes not only access to abortion care and birth control, but also is having serious and chilling effects on access to in-vitro fertilization.
